  • If you like and subscribe to my page you can tell I do small engine repair BUT I Love Ariens and enjoy repurposing, repowering, and re-using! I have done a few Hemi Swaps (212cc) but this 420cc Hemi is for me! I LOVE LOVE LOVE #Ariens #KingOf Snow and I have a fleet of them. My favorite machine from them is Big Tire 11/28! I had 4 of them and my wife ironically picked up a 5th one at a garage sale for $50. It had a hole in the block, skid shoe missing, and so on. THIS WAS THE PERFECT opportunity for me to slap a bigger engine on it and utilize the key start on it as well.
    The goal is MORE POWER (even though not needed), key start, and I want the engine to charge the battery as I am using it.
    Here is the link to the exact charging coil I used VIA Ebay. Ebay had the BEST PRICE:

    Here is the link to the Voltage Regulator via EBAY which also had the BEST PRICE:

      I’m not too keen an on electrical...I measured in AMPS...bc I wanted power to run all the accessories AND charge the battery at the same time.
      The is set up did not put out enough AMPS to run OEM Light, Heated Handgrips and charge the battery.
      Later down the line I found this out, I ditched the set up and went with OEM Honda Coils from a Genset. They were almost $100. I did post it on a video about the conversion.
      I didn’t make a big deal out of it bc most people aren’t doing this swap on a snowblower with all the bells and whistles. Most people are using these motors and running LED lights which doesn’t pull much.
      I can’t run LEDS on a snowblower bc they don’t emit heat. Once snow hits the light it freezes over and becomes useless.

    Hi, I need your advice on how to correctly wire up the additional charging coil and voltage regulator. What’s throwing me off is the one wire coming from each coil. Can I just take the that one wire from each coil and attach to each of the taps on the VR? If so, do I eliminate the diode that is one already installed coil wire? And if not using the VR, can I just connect both coil wires together provided by adding a diode onto the new coil wire (although I suspect that is what the VR is supposed to help me accomplish). Thanks, I appreciate any and all advice.

    • @pattayperformance
      @pattayperformance  5 лет назад

      Ray Y,
      You can wire them separately into recertifier/regulator.
      Red if power
      Green is ground
      Yellow and pink are power in from coils

    • @rayy4755
      @rayy4755 5 лет назад

      foreverfalcon40 thanks appreciate the info. Each coil wire will feed either side of the rectifier and overall the amps will add up from each coil and essentially double the output coming out of the VR. Just one last question, with the “stock coil” already installed, I believe there is a sort of filter diode in the wire that roughly rectifies to dc voltage, do I have to do anything with that or just let the wire be and still run to the VR. As you can tell I’m all new to this and just don’t want to burn anything out.

    • @pattayperformance
      @pattayperformance  5 лет назад

      Ray Y
      You can remove the diode since the Rectifier/Regulator will nullify that.
      Wires from each coil can be tied together or run them individually.

    How did you wire the coils and the VR? I have the exact same setup, my coils are putting out 15-30vac each, but when I wire each lead to the VR I’m only getting 3vdc output (open) I’ve tried two different regulators with the same result. I’m thinking maybe I have to float the ground on the regulator since the coils use the case for AC ground. Any insight would be helpful! Thanks

      I wired the regulator they way it instructed me in the directions.
      I would start with ground and report back. Hopefully someone who is more electrically inclined will chime in. If you ever find your issue and correct it. PLEASE post back...other people for sure will have your issue as well.

    • @shockburn
      @shockburn 4 года назад +2

      Pattay's Performance thanks for the reply, I got it working today! The engine is a 212 predator. There are two ways to run it, and it depends on how the coils are wired. Mine had a lead grounded to the iron core hence grounded to the block. You run the wires thru diodes and get a “half wave recitification” which works ok but it only puts out half the amps (since you are cutting out half the wave). To use a full wave recitifier as you have in this video, and what I used, you have to have coils that don’t share a ground with the dc side of the circuit. So you can buy coils like this that have two leads, or what I did is cut the coil wires from the ground lug, soldiered on a new wire to each, ran them out of the engine. So it gave me a total of 4 wires from the coils. In motorcycle electrical engineering it’s called “floating the ground” of the coils. I then wired the coils in parallel in a clockwise rotation to get down to two wires. I then connected these two wires to my recitifier inputs and bam full wave recitification and full amp potential from the coils. They are 3 amp coils so the system should output about 5 amps after losses. It runs 13.5 output to the battery now.
      Another way to hook it up full wave if your coils are grounded is to put the two coil wires together and run them to one of the recitifier inputs, then ground the other recitifier input. This however has drawbacks as then the dc side cannot share common grounds with the ac side and in my case would certainly not work with an electric starter that uses DC since it is grounded to the case. If you are just using it to charge a battery and run lights you could do this and just run separate ground wires to every light and it would work. But again the “correct” way to do it float the grounds of the coils. Source: 4 hours of reading on motorcycle electric conversion forums and trial and error on my own bike. Thanks again for getting me started in the right direction!

    Your videos inspired me to put this 420CC Predator on my otherwise virtually NEW Toro 928 Blower and now it is a beast. I even managed to get the Hemi version! Thank you for the inspiration!!! I had it up and running in just a couple of hours but then I realized that I needed to figure out how to connect my heated grips. When I was researching these motors I was lead to believe that this motor had a complete charging and starting system built in. But then after seeing your video about 'doubling the output voltage' I am a little confused. The user manual that came with the motor shows how to connect a 12V battery but now I am not sure if that battery will be charged while the motor is running (?). So here are my questions, and I would be so grateful if you could share you experience just a little longer:
    1). If I connect a small 12V battery (per the instructions that came with the motor) will it charge with the system as is?
    2). If I do/or don't choose to add the starting battery is there a way that I can simply connect my Toro builtin hand-warmers and the small LED light to operate while the motor is running (as it did with the stock motor?). If I can get this figured out it will truly be a complete success! Thanks for all of your great videos! (sorry this got so long winded :)

    • @pattayperformance
      @pattayperformance  4 года назад

      BASTARD! your gonna finish yours before I finish mine! Better POST VIDS FOR ME!
      So the motor does have a complete charging system! Even after adding a second coil it will not have enough power to charge the battery while running the OEM Light and heated hand grips. The only reason why this is an issue for me is b/c I do use the machine for snow removal. I ordered Honda Chargring coils from a get set THEY WEREN'T CHEAP! Are you running a battery or no? If not just follow the charging coil wire to the rectifier and use the wire from the rectifier out and hook it up to the heated hand grips.
      if you plan on using the battery, hook it up to the battery direct.

      @@pattayperformance: Thanks for getting right back to me! Eat your heart out pal... It so pretty and and soooooo powerful! It can blow more snow at an idle than the original 928 265CC motor did at full throttle! Very exciting stuff :) I love it. If I can just have a modest LED light (like it originally came with) along with the built in hand warmers I'll be thrilled. Its easy enough to start with the pull cord so a battery is not really necessary. After all... are we not men? Hell yes we are! Only real men add mega horsepower to their otherwise perfectly good, brand-spanking new snowblower! My wife said, "Why do we need a bigger motor?" I said, "Because it's bigger!' :)
      So tell me this (if you can) which wire can I spice into to get the 12Vs I need for my LED and built in hand-warmers? I was expecting a wire with a connector to be hang there all ready to connect to but it looks like the little harness is all bundled up so I have no idea where to spice into. Do you happen to know exactly which wire (color) that I can cut into?
      Thanks again for the inspiration. This is all your fault.

This was at 60% throttle. I couldn't help but think that the Pattay's Performance dude should be here to see this! I will be making a video and would like you to show some of the details involved in adding the 420 CC Hemi Predator to the Toro machine. It was VERY easy by the way and exceeded my hopes. Also, and I can't emphasize this enough: The new Joystick controlled chute on these Toro machines is a real game changer! It is so fast, versatile and cleverly designed I can't imaging being without it, and have been doing this for decades because I am really freaking old and oly wish that someone would have developed this ages ago. Its just that good.
      You'll see it all when I finish this up and get a video posted in the days to come. In the mean time here's my question: I decided to go ahead and add a starting battery to my new rig. I know that I can add the additional charging coil thanks to your explanation but how much juice will this really give me? My goal now is to be able to charge my battery, run my 18 Watt Led headlight and also run my built in Toro handle grip warmers. Is this realistic with 2 of those charging coils and that little voltage regulator? Please let me know if you can. Thanks again.

    Will this be enough amperage to power all the lights and horn and electric starter for a street legal mini bike?

    • @pattayperformance
      @pattayperformance  4 года назад

      John Tingle,
      Thanks for comment, using common sense while viewing the video shows that engine is BNIB with no gas as well as oil. Later down the line when I finally installed it on the snowblower after some retrofitting and fab work it was 5-6amps which was not enough to successfully charge the battery while operating the NON Led Light and the heated hand grips. Later on again on my channel I documented that issue and also showed that I upgraded to Honda Genset coils that cost ALOT more money and put me at 10-12 amps which is more than enough.
      This will work on a non Hemi Engine as well...these will power an led light or two while charging the battery. If your trying to do more on a go kart. I would just add an alternator. Being on a snowblower it’s pretty obvious why I couldn’t go that route.
