  • Today we dig deep and go around, and around, and around again. Roundabouts and traffic lights let us merge and marry, but what costs do they come with, and how should we be using them? We deep dive into these topics and more.

    These videos are the reason I subscribed to Retro! 🌟 What I could really use is a point-by-point explanation of using round-a-bouts more efficiently as you showed near the end of the video. I'm hearing what you're saying but it's not exactly making 100% sense right now.

    I love learning about the in-depth mechanics of the game, since it’s one thing to play it and have a good time and another to understand how it works and use that to improve your gameplay

    Love these vids on the inner workings of Mini Motorways. Hadn't considered how much accel/decel impacts performance. Sounds like there really is a max throughput to the roundabouts, above which they hurt more than help.
    Something I was wondering about was the option to funnel traffic through only one side of a dual destination. Seems like it should always be better to use both entrances provided the roads leading in aren't causing congestion.
    Can't wait to watch more!

    Okay first things first: Of course I want to see you do the challenge modes? Like, I'm a little offended you thought you had to ask?
    Second, love these deep dives into game mechanics. I've always loved roundabouts so I've been waiting for a dive into roundabout mechanics! Definitely a good watch, motivated me to install and play the new patch.

    Every spoke is both an entrance and an exit, so what counts as an entrance and what counts as an exit? Not only that, but if you congregate two types of spokes, then each type will always be clockwise from each other and counter clockwise from each other regardless of orientation.

    ok , I have watched 10:40-12:00 many times now and I 'm going crazy. Entryways clockwise from their exits? every point on a circle will be both clockwise and counterclockwise from everyother point. Isn't every road both an entry and an exit???? I love your stuff (also great move on Dino Polo's part to sponsor this, definitely reignites my interest in the game) but please you've gotta explain this more. Maybe post a picture of a right and wrong way to do it so I can compare, you change the pattern so fast so many times I'm not sure if one is the "right one" or not. Ok I think I might get it, you're saying each round about has 8 spoke options and that you want to leave the 2 spokes directly before the motorway empty so they have more space?

      There's a lot of "oh yeah, that makes sense" things in this world that actually take a lot of thought to reach the conclusion, so don't beat yourself up about it! I thought about it for like a month before I figured it out!

      @@Retroflux I've had a chance to play around a little bit with the roundabouts and it definetly works, flow does seem better even at higher loads. Love how thought provoking this game is!!

    great information, I only wish the final demonstration was done with different colored cars. I've only been playing for a week, so I'll probably have to watch this a few times to understand the actionable tips here.

      1. Order your roundabouts so the entrances are together and clockwise from the exits
      2. Acceleration is the killer to most runs
      3. Traffic light merges have some unintended bugs
      4. Challenge mode and a bunch of new features, available now! 🙂

    i’m still experiencing some bugs with the double wide parking lots and motorways, it happens maybe 1/8 games but if I move a motorway it traps all the cars of the opposite colour it seems. So if pink and blue are in the double wide, and I have a motorway to a blue colony, once I remove it the pink cars seem to forget that they can drive over the road that replaced the motorway.

    So basically when using roundabouts, we basically need to segregate the "house exits" and the "destination exits"? Like for example, if we're reading a roundabout clockwise, it should be:
    - destination
    - destination
    - house
    - house
    - house
    But this is bad:
    - destination
    - house
    - house
    - destination
    - house

      @Retroflux But... if you wanted to express just that, then "clockwise from the exits" (citing you at 10:44) makes no sense (what would be the counterclockwise alternative? :D). It's probably more like "bunched together"?
      I struggle to understand, WHY this is how it is: I mean, let's take a car coming from the latest housing branch heading for the first business/exit branch. That car is has maximum efficiency on its inbound route. However, outbound it's gonna "block" all the other exits and all the other entries.
      From my primitive understanding, each car has to use 360 degrees of the roundabout. So, where is the additional capacity coming from?
      Great series though, keep on with that great work!

      @@michaelmuller5856 I think this format is better for handling surges. When a surge happens, all of the cars can leave their houses together, which minimizes the number of collisions (cars heading the same direction don't stop each other). Likewise they'll come back largely together. When the houses and destinations are intertwined, you'll get more collisions with the incoming traffic from the opposite direction during surges.

      This explanation made me understand what he was saying, and the comment below it made me understand why it theoretically works. Once he gets the numbers I'd love to see another video with these two included for a more holistic explanation, or maybe just a composite video that encompasses and in depth guide to the whole game, all in one video, with all the numbers and theory off of it.

      aha, I would have way more, but every hour of content I ship takes about 3 hours to produce, and then each deep dive is about 40 hours total research, planning, scripting, etc. I think my total investment in MM content is reaching 200-300 hours... it's a lot lol.
      Challenge videos soon, I hope? It might have to wait until January, but we'll see how things pan out!

    you know challenges in mini motorways? i managed a score of around 3100 in double or nothing (manila)

      @@Retroflux my high score in manila is actually like 2000, it's the same in zurich (i have a high score of 3k in 'many tiny tunnels' and a high score of 2k in normal)

      @@Retroflux i'm trying the challenge 'go with the flow' in moscow, the double road tiles needed for straight roads=pain
      but at least double bridges to solve the bridge scarcity which is why i hate moscow in general

    I'll be honest, I could not understand most of this. There was something about round-abouts only supporting 3 to 5 cars at a time, fast cars are good, slow cars ruin everything, a roundabout with more than 2 arms is bad, unless you arrange them in a way where returning traffic takes an immediate right turn, which, eh, ???????
