Because of this video I finally went to the ER to get my calf pain I had been havingchecked out, it was getting to where I could hardly walk. Did the Homan’s sign test and it hurt like heck so went straight to the ER. Turned out it is a femoral and popliteal vein DVT, and quite large. Just got of the hospital today after a two night stay. They sent me home with blood thinner Rx. This video might have saved my life, though not totally in the clear until the clot is resolved. It’s scary. Please pray for me.
I do want to add that I have never had redness or swelling with this DVT at any point. The nurses in the hospital could hardly see any swelling, yet internally there is a large clot around 6 inches. Do not let a lack of redness or swelling stop you from getting calf pain checked out. It’s one of the things that made me hesitate to go for a while, was the fact there was no redness or swelling. This video finally pushed me into going.

@@hix9306 mine is pain on my calf and it feels like someone’s pulling my nerve there and my foot hurts on that side in a “tingly” way. it’s not severe pain but it does feel very off and not like the other leg. thinking about heading to the ER because i’m too scared lol
I’m so glad you didn’t ignore that pain and got treatment in time. My daughter wasn’t so lucky. I think the only leg pain she had happened that morning. She was rushed to the hospital but they were unable to save her. I just posted her story here a few minutes ago.💔

Wow. This video saved my life. I am a 30 year old healthy active male and started having calf pain. Brushed it off for a few days, watched this video and decided to get it checked in the er. Straight up dvt. On blood thinners now. Oh my God, thank you for this video!
What was the cause?
how severe was the pain if i may ask?
@@Cptraktorn it wasn't super painful per se. When I stood up I could feel pressure building in my calf and foot but it didn't hurt much. But when I went to straighten it out, I couldn't. Like I physically couldn't without pain then. The biggest reason I went to the doc was because there was no reason at all for this pain and I couldn't walk and it wasn't getting better after three days. Highly recommend going to doc, you don't want to mess around with this.
@@tanyawieczorek7943 they don't know for sure. But my diet for about a month before was lot and lots of fats. I was eating like 5 eggs for breakfast, two big pork steaks for dinner and full fat Greek yogurt with protein powder for dessert. Trying to bulk up and recover from the gym. This along with chronic dehydration, drinking basically no water each day. On top of that, the leg where I got the dvt I wasn't walking properly on it because I had a bad callus on the bottom of my foot. So barely any actual full flexing of my left foot while walking. I think it was a combination of all these things. I'm still waiting to see a specialist though..

Dear Bob and Brad, you just saved some lives. Strong work.
Ohhh this saved my anxiety from kicking into high gear! This test actually made my leg feel better!!!
Mine too!
This video actually saved me..
I had a leg pain for couple of days which got worse followed by fever
my calf slowly turned red and then brownish
i thought its a muscle strain or streched muscle and didnt cared too much
but after watching this video i rushed to my cardiologist who confirmed after ultrasound that its DVT
i was hospitalized for 7 days and had to take 14 injections of cleaxane
Yogesh H Oh wow
Glad you're ok!
Glad you are ok now.. scary stuff .
Ive had one in my leg but didnt know it because i had just had ankle surgery so i thought the pain was from that but about a week later my ribs really hurt..and again i thought it was cuz i had tried out some crutches... couldnt get comfortable enough to sleep..but eventually having troubles inhaling
I faded in n out in ambulance.
Docs did tests and asked questions.. i wrote down answers.
I was in hospital for a week on warfarin .
Just a few days ago i had stretched out my leg and it seemed to just get worse.. i keep trying to walk on it...slow going.. today seemed ok at beginning
Maybe the 2 extra strength tylenol
But as day went on it felt worse if i was sitting...I sat at a cafe with a friend and we sat on stools.. and it got to be too much i had to get up n keep moving.
Kinda felt like that first time.. so I looked up leg blood clot...and here I am.....hoping its not but have a feeling it might be another clot.
I am having calf pain along the vein starting from thigh for 1 week but no redishness as of now . After how much time the skin changed color
@@prakashdhyani524 my skin color didnt change but my one calf was 3inches wider than the other from the swelling.
You just saved my life. I have had calf pain for two weeks and did the test this morning. I went to my primary physician and asked if they could do an ultrasound. Just got the ultrasound done and it’s a blood cloth. If left unchecked could have become worst. Thank you so much!
I was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism, only after I insisted to have my calve pain checked by a specialist, since my own GP said it was just muscle pain. No discoloration, not swollen, no fever, only a horrible pain. In the end the blood clot ended up in my left lung causing a infarct. These men make it seem it's simple to recognize DVT, deep venous thrombosis. Apparently it can be quite tricky.
Doctors, despite their 8 years of schooling, often over look or are completely dismissive of patients.
It’s sad when you have to advocate for your own care but you know your body, so listen and keep pushing if it doesn’t feel/seem right.
This is so TRUE I went to 8 Doctors for almost a year complaining "MY LEG" "MY LEG" and that it hurts so bad I got to where it was impossible to walk and lift the leg at all until one nite I got up from trying to rest but the pain was horrible went to a different Hospital talk with the Doctor and she said that I will order some tests came back it was a blood clot before I left she gave me a shot of blood thinner and told me to be back at 8am for more tests to make sure that it was a blood clot tests proved that it was a blood clot people PLEASE listen to you body it will tell you when something isn't right
@@olliejohnson5229 excellent comment. Thank you!
I took my mom to urgent care and decided to get the increasing pain behind my knee checked out while I was there. The dr there thought I might have sprained something but ordered an ultrasound just to rule out DVT. Can’t believe that the radiologist said I was positive for DVT and sent me to the hospital.
I didn’t see swelling but the dr felt swelling. I was literally dragging my leg because it hurt to stand on it. I would have never checked it out if I hadn’t brought my mom to urgent care.
I’m pretty sure my pcp would have thought only a sprain and not rule out other stuff with testing. I could have easily set myself up for a pulmonary embolism because it only felt like a crap starting to form behind my knee.
So I understand how easy it is to go unrecognized or be misdiagnosed. I had cancer 3 years ago. Even with a giant lymph node forming, my pcp at the time misdiagnosed me and so did the allergy specialist she sent me to. I only found out it was cancer after going to the hospital right before my follow up. Without the lymph node, the only symptom I had was extreme tiredness. Without the multiple symptoms, it’s hard for them to pinpoint what you have.
I’m having a panic attack before they get to the point 😳🙄🤦♀️

Idk if I have it but man my calves hurt. It hurts a lot that I have to use one leg to walk on my tip of my foot. I think what caused it was when I was stretching my calves and think I stretched too long or something.. But then I was doing leg stretches on the floor and that was all. But then the next day after that it started to affect. My calves felt so tight and sore when I stood up and began to walk. Now I look like I'm whimping when I walk that I use my right leg tip of my foot to support me when I walk. My right calf hurts the most!!.. I have no idea what pain it is. I just hope it goes away fast.
No kidding. Not sure they are aware of what the average person's attention span is either.

Wish I saw this 30 years ago. Never knew about this till I almost died. Lucky for me I got to the hospital ER, the doctor there knew right away what the trouble was. A week later I was let go from the hospital with a list of things I needed to change in my life. This coming year I will be 73 and still going strong. To bad this is not told to the public more often. Thank you both for this video.
What were those things?
Thanks guys. I had a recent knee replacement operation. I had really bad stiffness and swelling in my calf muscle after being discharged from hospital. Was searching RUclips for massage exercises, came across this and went to see my doctor and an ultra sound confirmed I had a blood clot. If it wasn't for this video I may never have known. Thank you !
I wish my daughter would have known about this test. Although it may not have made a difference. What happened to her, happened very quickly. She woke up on a Monday morning with pain in her leg. She told her boyfriend she was going to go to Urgent Care before work. She quickly changed her mind and asked him to take her because she didn’t think she could drive herself. She was also suffering from shortness of breath by this time and it was getting worse. She lived in a second floor apartment. They made it to the landing halfway down. She sat down there, unable to go any further. Those were her last steps and probably her last words. He called 911 and they came and took her to the nearby hospital, and her boyfriend followed in his car. By the time her boyfriend got to where she was in the emergency room, they were already working on her. He was told she was in critical condition and he could hear all the commotion in her cubicle of them working on her…machines beeping, urgency in their voices. Mercifully, they had put her out and were putting her on a breathing machine, so she wasn’t conscious. They worked on her for about 20 minutes but were unable to save her. For some reason, I’m unable to remember what her time of death was, but sometime after 9:00. She would have been getting up for work by around 6:30 or 7:00, so it only took roughly two hours from start to finish. They’d had an uneventful weekend with no warning signs. She may have had some kind of sign, but we’ll never know because she never said anything, but she wasn’t someone who complained about every little ache or pain. However, a few months earlier she’d gone to the doctor and was told she couldn’t fly up to visit me because she had a small clot in her leg. It would have been an hour and a half flight, from San Jose CA to Portland OR. He told her it was a small clot and nothing she needed to worry about. He prescribed an anti inflammatory and that was it. There was no follow up and she wasn’t treated any further. No blood thinner medication. I’ve since found out that they don’t usually prescribe them in that type of situation. She did have some of the risk factors though, and had a sedentary job sitting at a desk. And in fact, there was a hereditary factor that we were unaware of. My other daughter has been tested and she has markers in her blood for the same thing. She’s under a doctors care now and being monitored so the same thing won’t happen to her, thank God! It came from her dad’s side because we were both tested and mine came back negative. I only wish we’d known about this before! Maybe Sara’s life could have been saved. All of our lives were changed forever that day. No parent should have to outlive a child. My other daughter lost her sister who was also her best friend. She had only just turned 35. 💔
GOD BLESS U!!

Thank you for this life saving video. My Mom would be alive today if only the Doctors and Nurses in the hospital she went to back in 2004 actually understood the classic symptoms of blood clots. They had a day and a half of her complaining of the pain and symptoms to give her blood thinners, which they failed to give and it traveled to her lungs in the hospital and she died. I shared this on Facebook and hopefully it helps someone whoever needs this. Thank you!

I've suffered 2 separate instances of DVTs, which led to pulmonary embolisms; both of which were induced by long periods of sitting still. After the second one, my doctor prescribed Xarelto and I will have to take it for the rest of my life. Great advice on what you can do to reduce the likelihood of getting a DVT while traveling. However, I'm surprised you guys didn't mention using compression socks while on a long flight or drive. I use them every time I travel long distances, in addition to stopping every 2 hours to just walk around for a few minutes. A good pair of compression socks can be a lifesaver.
Too late for my mum.no warning signs at all.

I actually wear compression socks all day & night. Idk if I have clots, but my legs swell & hurt if I don't wear them. And my circulation is bad.

Ok and what did the Dr do ??????????
Had back surgery last May and was in hospital for a week. They did all those tests and I felt no pain at all. A few hours after I got home I was in an ambulance off to the ER. Diagnosis: DVTs in right calf and left thigh with extensive pulmonary embolisms in both lungs. I'm lucky to be alive. Next time I not leaving hospital unless they give me an ultrasound first.
I had leg pain in my right leg calf down to my Achilles tendon. Sometimes the leg would go numb below the calf, but the pain was almost constant because my job requires me to be on my feet 90% of the shift. After a couple of weeks of the pain not subsiding I went to my Doctor who scheduled an ultrasound which showed a blood clot behind the knee. The Doctor immediately prescribed blood thinner Pradaxa, and Naphroxin for pain. It took about six months for the clot to totally dissolve and the pain to stop. My side effects with Pradaxa were brutal at times, shortness of breath, chest pains, and serious joint pain. Anyone who reads this and is having calf/Achilles pain, tingling/ numbness in lower leg, please get it checked out by your physician or fo to the emergency room. I take a low dose aspirin daily for life after doctors took me off the Pradaxa. The whole episode changed my life, had I ignored it I wouldn't be alive today. God bless 🙏
I hope you're wearing compression socks at your job.
Wow I wish I saw this vid 16 years ago..in the middle of an athletic event..at the age of 45...I suffered a DVT in my leg which traveled into my lungs. at the time I thought it was heat stroke. The loss of breath ..unbelievable weakness. Racing heart beat. An ambulance was called. They released me..being very athletic I thought I injured my knee again..the shin splints..the swelling in my left leg was very noticeable..not regaining my strength..I went a month before seeing a doctor thinking I was going to get better...I was diagnosed with a DVT and A Factor 5 blood disorder..im now on blood thinners and wear compression socks. .a small price to pay. I think of all the signs I missed not knowing and not facing the fear of what it could be...I’m lucky to be alive..I hope people gain knowledge of this vid and my story...thanks gentlemen..you provide the knowledge we just have to pay attention.
Just recently diagnosed with dvt/clots in calf & thigh. I had calf pain, swelling on one leg, BUT swelling was going down with elevation, and when I tried this test, squeezing my calf, it did not hurt that much, so I did not think it was DVT. Thankfully, I went to doc and they did ultrasound... Several clots found.
Omg how are you doing now? What was the cause?
I have pain in my carve for the past week now.i take pain tablets and rub it then I feel better but the next day it's back again. I have a history with thrombosis In my father's family's some passed .
Ok and what did the Dr do for you ?????????
I am super grateful for both of you you taught me how to get my triceps exercise with weights laying down to protect my back!! Thank you!!
I have got one behind my knee, I knocked my calf at work, nothing major or enough to even report, but noticed my left leg had swollen slightly,
Only a 2-3 cm difference but felt like a dull ache, went to the doctors and saw a nurse practitioner, decided it wasn’t a clot, after a week I went back
as not happy, she did a D Dimer blood test which came back positive and I was sent for a ultrasound today which revealed the clot, I have to take blood thinners now and have some more tests, but if you have any symptoms go go the doctors.
An easy way to remember the risk factors are to know Virchow’s triad - stasis, vessel wall injury, and hypercoagulability. (Ex: sitting for a long time, surgery, birth control)
Hi Bob and Brad,
My dad recommended your videos a few months ago and I became a subscriber. I'm so glad I did as I'll explain.
I started having some left leg calf pain about a week ago. I chalked it up to a pulled muscle and started icing and heating etc. After a few days of no relief, I searched your videos on RUclips hoping to find some good stretches for the calf. That's when I happened upon this video. It made me think about the possibility of a clot. I did your recommended test in the video and thought it might be worth going to get checked out.
I went to my doctor this morning, where they did a d-diper test and found elevated levels. They then sent me to get some imaging where they discovered a clot just above my knee and one in my calf area.
Had I not watched your video, the thought probably would not have entered my mind and I would have just continued assuming I pulled my calf muscle.
I'm not one for hyperbole but I feel like your video may have saved my life.

Just got diagnosed with a Blood Clot this week in my left calf leg. I had the knee arthroscope 2 weeks ago. The only pain I had was in the back of my knee and never in my calf! My only clue something was wrong was that my calf turn hard as a rock and I told the Doctor and it save my life!
Yes mine was originally just in the back of my knee! It spread to my calf and thigh later, but I remember that pain specifically. I thought I just pulled a muscle, but there was no reason for it and I just thought it felt "off" compared to a normal muscle soreness. It's hard to explain, but somehow I knew it was a blood clot even though I didn't get checked out for months. In all that time, the clot got worse and I developed dozens of pulmonary emboli. If I had gone in right away, I may have been able to save my lungs from so much damage. I was 33, physically fit, and had many well-meaning friends and loved ones tell me I was worrying about nothing. Always trust your gut! It's better to be wrong and feel "silly" than to ignore it until it almost kills you.

Been on blood thinner now for almost 12 years. Have had DVT'S twice that broke loose and ended up as a pulmonary embolism. Those clots can take your heart out in the way to your lungs. Very serious matter.

It’s possibly just inactivity; make sure to stretch your muscles every hour and try to walk at least 3k steps a day if you’re sedentary
In medicine, Homans' sign (sometimes spelled as Homans sign) or the dorsiflexion sign is considered a sign of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It was defined by John Homans in 1941 as discomfort behind the knee on forced dorsiflexion of the foot.[1] After surgeons discovered many examples of a false-positive Homans' sign, Homans redefined it in 1944, stating that "discomfort need have no part in the reaction", including increased resistance, involuntary flexure of the knee or pain in the calf to forced dorsiflexion as positive responses.[1][2][3][needs update]
It is estimated to have a sensitivity of 10-54% and a specificity of 39-89%,[1] and is thus considered to have no diagnostic value, since a positive sign does not indicate DVT and a negative sign does not rule it out.[1] Still, it is widely used in clinical practice, probably because of its historical role prior to the availability of more reliable diagnostic studies (such as a D-dimer titration or a Doppler ultrasound), as well the ease of eliciting it.[4] Signs and symptoms of DVT in general are not sufficiently sensitive or specific to make a diagnosis, being helpful only to help determine the likelihood of a DVT (with the use of a clinical prediction rule such as the Wells score).[5]
I added this because I had a DVT that was missed because the doc relied on Homan's and Homan's only. By the time I was diagnosed 6 weeks later the clot was all the way up into my pelvis and I was hospitalized for 6 days. Imagine if they had caught it early when it was still a little clot in my calf. I probably wouldn't have had that brain bleed from heparin and wouldn't have post thrombotic syndrome now.
This test did not work for me either. I do not present with classic symptoms because I seek help before the problem gets that big. Unfortunately most doctors only look for the classic signs. My doctor tests "just in case" and catches them early.
Thank you for mentioning Wells criteria. As a PT for 27 years, I have to admit earlier in my career I depended on Homans test. I also frequently sent my TKA patients to get Dopplers that were negative. When I did wells criteria in inpatient rehab, with a student who educated me, we were able to find 2 patients with clots (1 was already diagnosed, we weren’t informed). Much more reliable
woke up with an unexpected pain in my calf--just one spot. Despite the lack of most of the causes, (I'm always dehydrated....) I immediately assumed there was a clot and yep, anxiety kicked in....this video just popped into my email inbox and this test put my mind at rest.
Thanks so much, I have always worried about blood clots. Now I know what to look for. A big thanks.👍
Sciatica can cause intense calf pain. I have gone for ultrasound many times when I had severe calf pain...could not even touch my calf, and the test always comes back as nerve pain....no clots.
Exactly. This isn't the most helpful video. Its far too general in its approach. Pain from squeezing the calf can be very indicative of an injury.
Everyone worried. Start living healthy and sensible and the problem will go away or lessen whether a clot or not. Self-test:
Do yo drink ½ Litre of boiled water first thing in the morning, for gently waking the body and body functions up,cleansing, detox, hydration - of blood vessels too!!! -for bowel movements etc?
Do you eat blood-thinning foods like garlic, Ginger or that yellow curcumin root etc?
Do you sit still most of the time?
Do you excercise, go for a walk, do some gymnastics , stretching, dancing etc every day?
Do you reduce and manage stress?
Feel and Express feelings, exchange hugs, laugh, have some fun, do deep breathing daily, pray and /or meditate min. 5 mins.?
Dop you take care of problems and relationships, fears , anger, resentment, worry, anxiety so taht they don't accumúlate, build mental pressure=nervousness= tense muscles= stress= burdened nerves, heart, vessels, blood clotting from stress (to help you fight or flee without bleeding!)

I have a clotting disorder and have had quite a few DVT's in my 65 years. I always go by the "toes to the nose" test. And when I stand from sitting, there is a grabbing pain from the bottom of my foot and up the back of my leg. However, not one of my DVT's has ever presented with redness or swelling. So don't assume that because you don't see those two symptoms, everything is fine. I've had a few doctors insist it was just a pulled muscle because there were no visible symptoms. Ten years ago I fractured my leg in a car accident and required surgery and some in house rehab time. I knew a few days after surgery that I had a DVT. I asked repeatedly for a doppler. The rehab doctor, not seeing redness or swelling, patted me on the head and told me to stop worrying, I was just fine. Several day later as I took my first assisted walk around the therapy gym, my imaginary clot broke away from the back of my knee and filled my lungs with multiple clots.
I am glad you are okay.
This is one of the reason so many of us hesitate to go to a doctor, if we aren't being accused of wanting drugs, then we are dismissed on our symptoms. We know our bodies, we are the only one who does and for those who don't learn to listen to it, become your own advocate, you might save your own life!
Common Femoral Vein, Popliteal Vein and then calf veins are the 3 spots where DVT's likely start.

The Homan's sign is no longer considered to be a valid test for DVT. I am a physician. If you have calf pain, see your doctor. Sometimes an Ultrasound is the only way to be sure.
Not me being a hypochondriac again
Just watched this old video. Very useful. Thanks Bob and Brad 😊
I've been mostly bed or couch bound for nearly two decades. I'd noticed that I'd picked up a habit of flexing / pumping my ankles. Haven't done this intentionally. Good thing I'm doing it.
Sharon here: Just an added note. My DVT did not present as red, and had only 1cm difference between the size of my calves. Lucky for me, the resident sent me for an x-ray anyway. After sending blood samples out to California, no cause was determined, and it remains "unprovoked". Knowing that it could happen again at any time makes me jumpy every time I have calf pain.
I have the same problem have severe left calf pain and hurts like hell can’t sleep and I pass this test. feels like a cramp but no swelling or redness went to ER few days ago and was given Xarelto tablets (blood thinner) 15MG 2x per day and ultrasound scan is due tomorrow wish me luck :(
Turned out I have DVT , this test is spot on and saves lives
Been there, done that, I am the Queen of PEs. I had multiple DVTs in both legs, and both arms. When I asked my Internists if I could see the x-rays of them, I was told there were so many, and they were everywhere! When I asked how long it would take to recover, both internists said they could not figure out why I was still alive, and that they did not know how long it would take to recover, because they had never seen anyone survive what I had. I'm stuborn, that's why...LOL
Or somebody’s praying for you by Gods grace...

Wow. So are you still around? I hope 🤞🏻 👏🏻
Twisted my calf last night and got paranoid. Lol this test actually felt good (nice stretch) and the pain I was feeling reduced by 75%. Diagnostic and therapeutic! Thanks guys!
One week ago I developed what felt like a regular old leg cramp in my left leg. Then it swelled a little and felt hot.
I went to the hospital and it turned out I had DVT with blood clots up my leg and my stomach resulting in a stent put in my left leg, pressure stocking to my waist and warfarin and I learned that I have may-Thurner Syndrome that compresses the main vein in my left leg (if I remember right).
Im a 37 year old mum so I'm pretty active and it just came out of nowhere.
I made a video warning people about how a simple leg cramp can change your life forever because I thought DVT was something you only got from long travels.
Oh how wrong I was.
Hope you are doing better.
I sit a lot on my couch due to studying for hours (bad habit and im changing that!) but I've been having this weird calf sensation the past two days and its scaring the crap out of me. I have no calf swelling or redness. Just a weird burning pain that radiates down my leg when standing for long periods and a weird twinge pain sometimes when walking. I convinced myself all day I have a DVT (thanks nursing school lol) but after watching this video and doing the tests I literally have no pain when doing it and it eased my mind, Thank you! -Katie

My right leg hurts so bad and after sitting it's worse. As I'm watching this I stretch my toes up. My leg feels better. Thank you. I have a Dr appointment scheduled for next week
Wish I had seen this video earlier.......but alas too late lost all my toes and part of my foot......Miss diagnosis by a former Sports Injury Doctor.. you both sure save a lot of lives with these shows...
if you think you have a dvt, get off youtube and go to the doctor and request ultrasound!! the longer you wait to get treatment the larger the clot can grow.
I can't. My worthless ACA insurance covers no testing. My calf pain is bad right now....
Stevie Peele some people cant afford that...
Stevie Peele It's ridiculous, in the USA some people can't afford an ultrasound!
M gmail my ACA is what saved my life. Maybe it's your governor's fault??? It should be fixed because this is bull, but be sure to blame the right person and situation! Many Republican governor's refused the funding to help people with it, just because they're not concerned about making Obama and the Democrats look bad, than about people's lives.
No matter the situation, I wish you the best! And DON'T wait for it, it could save your life!
I thought I had one once after a 12 hour drive in the car ... I went to the hospital (which for me takes A LOT) the doctor basically laughed at me and told me it's just me getting older (I was 45 at the time). Although it might be part of it, treating people like that is the exact reason that I hesitate to go to the hospital or doctor. I didn't end up having a clot, but they did find other things which was causing my dizziness and nausea.
I pray that doctor's stop acting like that guy ... It's really not comforting for the patients.
I think the newest recommendation (after you are diagnosed with a blood clot) is to get up and move or exercise.
First the clinic or hospital emergency room that you go to will do a blood test called d-dimer. These can usually show whether there are blood clots in your body. Then if that test is high they will do an ultrasound. Then they may do a CT scan.
Also in addition to pumping your feet up and down against a hard surface, pump them side to side also.
I'm 33 and healthy. Just had meniscus surgery. Within a day my calf was red and hurt a lot. Physical therapist didn't mention it but thank got the massage aid did otherwise I wouldn't have known it was serious and to go to ER. DVT, multiple blood clots in calf and behind knee. Now I'm on blood thinner. Could you guys do a video on what you should and should not do after being diagnosed with DVT? I can't find any information on that and it's important I move a bit to gain range of motion back in my knee but I'm also afraid of dislodging the clots. Thank you for the helpful video full of New England wit!
Wow! Thank you Im on the other side of my 2nd blood clot in my lung...Thanks for this...
Second this scares me I had massive pe I don’t want another
With you on that one. I had a bilateral PE 5 months ago. It's very scary
I’ve had three severe DVTs - and on each occasion i have had to get really firm with doctors who were ignoring me and telling me the excruciating pain was something else. I insisted on d-dimer and ultrasound and each time i was proved right. This is my go to test - the pain is pretty unmistakable. Do not ignore calf pain - the level of risk of death from a subsequent embolism if left untreated is not one you’d willingly take.
The doctor took a d dimer for my mother and told her it was 4000 plus from what I remember. Said that means she had a PE. then discharged her. Went to another er the next day. The doctor got upset at the first doctor. Turns out that if you are sitting or laying around for a long time, the d dimer test comes out wonky. My mother was laying down for a long while when they took her blood causing the test to have a high read like that. The next day it came out normal and there was no dvt. The first doctor put me into a panic.
I had swelling and pain in my calf for a week. Seeing this video prompted me to seek medical attention. Turns out that it was a cyst.
I have had 3 clots in my calf with no swelling or pain whatsoever. The only symptom was a sensation of a pea in the back of my calf. As I walked I felt it "bounce". Then January of last year I awoke with my left leg red, hot and swollen. They found ONE clot going from mid-calf to navel with a small piece in my lung. I still have it. I am on xeralto for life. They say it may Never dissolve. It has crippled me.
We are so sorry to hear this
Doesn’t hurt when I move, but it’s quite painful in ONE specific spot to the touch, no bruising no swelling. At the bottom of the calf muscle. Inside of the leg.
Mine too. I’ve heard it may be sciatica, but I’m not 100% sure obviously
Turns out was from my new flat sole shoes, the bottom of the calf muscle was kind of strained.... because later the right leg had the same thing but not as bad
@@joeswanston1977 I’m feeling the exact same a little ball spot behind my upper calf muscle
What’s you do? You just switch shoes and it went away over time?
@@EdwinGonzalez-wy3ey give it maximum a week, switch shoes, rest... maybe light foam roll.... is what I did, was gone in a few days man

I noticed soreness in both calves when walking for the past two days, this happens once every so often, once every 2 months or so for a few days that I've noticed. I am skinny and no major health problems, but sit for long periods of time due to my job. I am 23 and on birth control pills. I noticed tonight after looking in the mirror due to soreness, that I have 2 unexplained bruises near the back of my knee towards the side of the leg. Should I be concerned this is a blood clot?
Check for Factor 5 ?
My pain is in the thigh. I just traveled on airplane 8 days ago. It’s Christmas Eve and my Drs office is closed!
Turns out it was a DVT

How did you figure out to get your lungs checked? I have pain in my calf and knee and also sharp pain under both rib cages
How long would it take for the blood clot to break away and go to the lungs? I've had a sudden pain inside my calf, I'm hoping its not a big deal. If it's possible to wait a week or so before the signs are more definitive, that would be great.
Ik this video is pretty old, but I do track so I’m definitely moving a lot, I don’t smoke, I have sickle cell, I’m not over 60, and I have the same exact pain in both my legs.
I would love to sit around and talk to these two guys. I could listen to them talk all day
What are other places clpts tend to form? How do you test the upper thigh? Arms?

I awakened with Calf pain in both legs the day after Christmas 2016. Pain continued, Dec.29th I awakened with severe Chest and both Arm’s. My husband called 911, I was taken to the hospital my Medic gave me a an EKG and confirmed the Heart Attack. If you have Calf Pain, pay attention !
I'm guessing, and please correct my disinformation if I'm wrong, but if the calf pain is on both sides its probably from a challenging workout and not a bloodclot
Very informative. I had a DVT behind my right knee, broke off went to my right lung. The pain was horrible. Found out I have an inherited clotting disease, Factor V Leiden. On blood thinners for life now.
Hope you’re doing okay

I'm a retired nurse.
Recently, I fell flat on my patella, got tangled up in a cord, within a week my leg swelled to at least three times its size, lower legs tight and red. Way too swollen & tight to get a pedal pulse, and no cap unfill. I'm skinny, no bones or veins to be seen. My foot was getting smurfy. Foot flexion would have sent me through the roof. I was aware of the potential diagnosis. DVT of course, Homans cyst, cellulitis, no seepage tho. Ppl said I must go in, it looks terrible, go in! No,
with the medical field so strained and stressed, I triaged myself. Of course, I was walking wounded. But an old ER nurse friend of mine had said, tincture of time for most ailments, or the 72 hour rule. I'm pretty much bed-bound, dt nursing wear and tear on my body, lower leg is 99% better except for some pain in the back calf. Movement much better.
Caps are good, not smurfy anymore. Doctor's appointment next week, as scheduled. 6 months prior. Of course I should have went in, but my body is deeded to the University of Iowa, and some of the treatments could have precluded my eligibility. I understand you won't read this, maybe I'm just venting. But thank you for the information.
You should do a video on intermittent claudication in the calf due to PAD.
pain could be a clot, neuropathy, PAD, dvt...so many causes
I had such a clot 4 mo ago but because of other serious back issues, my docs overlooked some significant swelling & pain in thr left leg. Finally got an US last week & confirmed it, it's already dissolving but this medical system is garbage.
The drs have no idea what they are doing today. They are truly quacks.
I travelled to Vietnam recently. % hrs drive to the airport followed by a 5 1/2 hr flight. All good. Then I took a 21 hr train trip from Saigon to Da Nang. After a couple days in Da Nang I was getting short of breath. I thought it was asthma or an allergy. It continued to get worse and I eventually admitted myself to hospital. They said I had heart failure. I told the DR's that I had pain in my left calf and they told me it was varicose veins causing the pain. After 5 days I was released but I didn't trust the diagnosis and decided to fly home. Upon arrival to the airport I was dizzy and had a terrible headache. I didn't feel that I could walk off the plane by myself and I was taken off in a wheelchair. The airport supervisor decided to send me to hospital via ambulance where I was diagnosed as having a DVT with Pulmonary Embolism. The scan on my lungs showed multiple blood clots. Thank God I decided to follow my instinct and fly home. I may well have died had I carried on with my holiday. I am now on blood thinners and slowly recovering. It certainly takes your breath away.
6:25 Unfortunately blood thinners do not dissolve clots but they should stop new clots forming and give your body time to break down existing clots. TPA -plaminogen activator breaks down clots but doctors don't always use it for fear of bleeding.
I was 10 days from having my knee replacement surgery, when my calve swelled up and became rock hard. I'm only 16 and I had a massive blood clot in my left leg that was the result of blocking off an aneurysm in my thigh. At first the pain in my calf was like a mix of cramping and it felt like a Charley horse was about to start but not quite. After 5 days of having my calf pain I went to the children's hospital for an ultrasound and that's what found the clot so I was admitted right then and there and a thrombectomy was scheduled for the next day. After I was admitted the pain got so much worse. It got to feeling like a Charley horse but 10 billion times worse. I couldn't even sit up in the position of a chair without extreme pain. I'll never forget how painful that was
I think this is happening to me, it all started with having Charley horse for a minute or so, then I said, just cramps, but there are more than 5 days of dull pain in the back of my lower left leg, you know, where the muscle is located.
Did you felt that there is a tightness there? How should I explain myself, as if you have something stony there, it hearts when you walk and when you rest and sometimes it hurts more powerfully, in special at night? It's a dull pain, not that powerful but you can't live your life without noticing it.
Now the pain started to move uppwards towards my leg and the muscle are twitching from time to time over my left leg.
Catalinul If you're having similar leg pain to what mine was I suggest you go in to see a doctor as soon as you can. I suggest you explain the pain as it feels like something horrible is about to happen but not quite but that it's still very painful

Homans Sign is nolonger advised and practiced any more in the medical setup, hope you can stop as well. It risks the dislodgement(break-off) of the thrombi as you exert pressure when dorsiflexing the leg... Risking the patient for PE, stroke or MI
