Nah, It's more complicated than that. Em was a white guy who was down and had the approval of the most "gangster" rappers in hip hop. Every white person that listened to gangster rap in the 90s suddenly had a champion, and he was dope. Not to mention he had the backing of one of the most powerful teams in the industry at that time. I still remember hearing his song on the radio the first time, the fact that he was white was a big deal. They played into this, and it was genius. Canibus never stood a chance against that, his beef with LL definitely didnt help his career as far as connections in the industry go.
But Canibus went on to write argubably the most advanced lyrics the genre has ever seen.

Exactly. The same could be said for The Game. Game is a great rapper but not necessarily a great songwriter on his own. I grew up listening to metal and progressive rock and didn't get into rap until well after high school and the same basic principle in regards to songwriting can be applied there as well. The common listener doesn't care if you can play a million notes or play some ridiculous poyrhythmic groove in some undiscovered time signature. That isn't going to sell albums, but what is is a simple, catchy, and memorable melody/hook that gets stuck in your head, and Em was the master of marrying technical lyrical skill with infectious hooks.

Canibus and Em, at their peaks, were neck and neck lyrically. There's a reason people wanted to see them battle. Canibus didn't take off simply because people couldn't relate to his content. There was absolutely a lane for him, but it was in the Redman/ Def Squad lane. Everyone loved his bars, but his songs didn't connect with the majority of the people. Em however had an entire race behind him, content you had never really heard and he was backed by the culture. Nobody was beating that back then..

I remember back then around '99 Eminem was mainstream all over MTV with comical videos + Dre droppin Chronic 2001, Em was basically Pop music and the entire world paid him attention. Canibus was more underground spitter. But in '98 the anticipation for his album to drop amongst DMX Nore Big Pun Cam'ron etc was intense. But his debut was a bit of an anticlimax so when Eminem dropped around '99 Canibus weren't at that mainstream level and his next album 2000 B.C (100 Bars 🔥) dropped in 2000 only Hardcore Hip-Hop heads were paying him attention and he faded into the deep deep underground. Don't pretend we didn't see this in everyday life back then where white brothers had all the support & opportunity handed to him but the black brother with the same or better skills was not and left to fade & rot. The music industry is very strategic about not letting emcees like Canibus become mainstream.

Canibus was THE topic in 97... A little bit of 96 too with that Music Makes Me High remix. Canibus came out the gate different. Its like yesterday you never heard of him and today... Hes on 30 verses on 34 different mixtapes. Hes track 4 on Clue, track 1 on Ron G, track one on Envy, track 2 on Big Mike, track 4 on Absolute... Thats day 2 now, remember yesterday you didnt know who this nigga was. Day 5... On a song with Lost Boyz and Dogg Pound... Day 7 another song with Lost Boyz but it also has G Rap and Heltah Skeltah on it. Day 9, Lost Boyz, A+ and Panama PI, Day 10, hes on a remix with Black Rob and Yvette Michelle. Day 12 Tragedy Khadafi, Big Pun & Killa Sha, Day 15 3LW, Day 20, Brian McKnight, Day 31 Common Sense, Day 50 the whole Firm, Day 51, the whole Firm minus Nas cause Nas pulled his verse after hearing Canibus verse (allegedly), day 70... Day... It dont matter, Canibus hit the planet like The tunguska meteorite that hit Russia... And radiated unabated for 3 years and then... They came for him. The industry, LL & Wyclef and he wasnt even 22 yet.
We give Bis a hard time when Rakim and G Rap both at the time are quoted as saying they're most excited about him... In the moment, both the hip hop god's said it was Canibus that wxcited them the most. We dwell alot on hearsay and what we believe we remember but I remember mixtapes being sold out everywhere because he was on it. That wasn't a thing, mixtapes didn't sell out at the mixtape spot, they sold out all the time because there was a Canibus verse in 97... I was there, I walked down the hill from Jamaica high school to Jamaica avenue as fast as I could to pick up the new clue and "sorry kid, sold the last one 2 hours ago but come back Thursday, Clue said he'll be back to drop off some more."
Im reading these comments and I know yall wasnt in NYC during the missle launch that was Canibus. If yall was, y'all was babies and heard about son from your pops a decade later in 2007 maybe but you werent there... You never hewed Seriously or Boys To Men or Making A Name For Ourselves or Bop Your Heads or Ladies & Willies or the 60 minute freestyle with DMX and Nore... I mean heard it live... The set up, conversation before the beat drops and everything. Yall wasn't there, Eminem didnt step out the gate like this... Canibus did it by himself. His machine was his bars, Cheeks and Charles Suitt. Eminem stepped out the gate, no one heard it and then Dre signed him. Em is cool but Canibus was energy in 96. Me and my friends was battling each othwr wirh Canibus, Pun, DMX and Nas bars in the cafeteria in 8th grade because that was the energy whether you want to remember or you cant.
My only beef with Benzino here is... Why didnt he reaxh out to Bis then cause no bullshit, Hangmen3 had some of the hottest beats back then and was a machine when It came to putting out music. Made Men were everywhere so I can't understand why if Benzino feels this way right now... Why didn't he pull this rapper that he clearly respects into his circle back then. Canibus over some of them beats??? All respects to math but he's no Germaine Williams... His should have been the shooter that Benzino was looking for back then.
Damn... I know people reading this and Don't have a clue, don't even know what a DJ Absolute mixtape even is... you had to be there

The whole hip hop community (I mean DJ's, MC's, producers etc etc) saw a young extremely talented kid being blackballed and never reached out with support. It's no wonder Bis was scarred from this whole experience. He saw a whole industry turn there back on him.

That’s a fact! I don’t want to discount his lyrical genius but he had a machine behind him that the others just didn’t have in Jimmy Iovine and Dre. When you’re white in America the world is yours. The Beastie Boys had Def Jam and Run DMC in their corner and they became legendary too and outsold Run DMC! Regarding Canibus he destroyed his entire legacy by having Wyclef Jean produce his music alongside beefing with LL. That was career suicide. The music business is a tricky ride where timing and poor execution can destroy a promising career.

It’s a whole bunch of dudes other than Canibus. Em was the ONLY one to blow up, so that whole ‘these dudes can’t write good records’ was bs. People didn’t wanna hear lyrical black dudes. It’s just what it was. Some sold just enough and were respected enough to stay a float. I remember trying to get so many people to listen to Common’s LWFC and hardly no one wanted to even give it a shot even though it was a dope album with great songs. Smart black dudes somehow people don’t wanna here, but when Marshall Mathers LP came out a couple months later, no one hesitated to listen to it. To me it was mediocre partly because Common and J Dilla had set the bar for me at that time, but it doesn’t matter when people don’t want to give you a fair listen.

The hip-hop artists that blow up aren't necessarily the best emcees. They're the ones who know how to write songs that people like, not simply have the best bars. I love Travis Scott. Is he the greatest lyricist? No. But that's fine. Eminem is both a great lyricist and a great songwriter. That's why he's a superstar.
