- Thank you to our supporter Gail H for this jazzy pick... I see why this was controversial but damn, that rhythm is SICK. His vocals matched with those backing singers is just great. That last note he hits.... so mournful and reminiscent. I love this mans work so much.

You might have missed the background singers referencing “A Day In The Life”…. “I read the news today, oh boy”.
Yeah I didn't catch that! Cool Easter egg!
@@L33ReactsDavid gave John Lennon a writing credit on this song for using his line.
@@bluesrock1 Lennon was co-writer on Fame. Didn't get a credit on this one.
@@jonmcdevittYou're right, it was Fame. Thanks!
This is where Luther Vandross began his career
That is so cool! What a voice he has.
@@L33ReactsCheck out the documentary "20 Feet from Stardom", which is about the world of backup singers. Luther was a backup signer for Bowie. Speaking of folks on that documentary, check out the live performance by Lisa Fischer of "How can I Ease the Pain", for one of the most masterful vocalists of all time doing her thing. She was, in turn, a backup singer for Luther.
David always surrounded himself with great musicians
He definitely does. It's kinda wild the amount of talent he has around him at ALL times.
Bowie was always ahead of the curve. By the time the rest of the music industry caught up to where he was he had moved on to something else. Look at all his personifications; Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke etc. He never stopped experimenting, right up to the day he passed away. He knew his time on earth was fleeting so he didn't waste a moment of it. RIP David, You are & will be missed.
Bowie had a lot like this… Fame, Golden Years, Suffragette City. So good.
The ballad WIN from this album is perfection. Some of Bowie’s best lyrics ever about artistic integrity and spite of managers:)
It's one of my all-time favourites.
This is a banger by Bowie, an homage of sorts to American soul music and culture in 1974. It was recorded in Philadelphia and included backing vocals from Luther Vandross, who was unknown at that time.
I read the news today, oh boy!!!!!......a bowie beatles homage...woot, woot!.....lastly, luther vandross et al on backing vocals this whole album: D
Luther Vandross not only sang background here, he did the background vocal arrangements, as he did for many artists before he went solo.
Its a much deeper song than your thoughts from the initial reaction. Its his impressionistic view of America as an Englishman. It covers the Watergate scandel, McCarthy witch hunts, civil rights movement, sex, race, and a tribute to the Beatles.
There have never been better Bowie lyrics 🎶😎
Excellent analysis ❤🎉❤
Has one of my favorite lines: “Took him minutes, took her nowhere”. When he died, the line “isn’t there one damn song that can make me break down and cry”
David Bowie's "Plastic Soul" is just so amazing.
So much Bowie so little time lol
That’s the great David Sanborn on the saxophone.
Who are these “fans” that don’t like this song/album? The whole thing is fantastic.
I AM a Bowie fan. I don't like the album. I don't like soul. I like some of the songs, the rest is not for me.
DAVID BOWIE LIVES
When I heard Bowie died, my mind went right to the Beatle’s copied lyric “I heard the news today, oh boy!”
Btw, the dudes of Chicago hate Saturday in the Park as they know they have to play it, each & every concert.
The entire album is a gem. Check out his cover of The Beatle's Across The Universe.
Oozes coolness
It really does! It's amazing lol
Bowie suggestions: "Rebel Never Gets Old" and " It's No Game Part 1"
You have no idea how many times over, and over one had to listen to this song to get all the lyrics. At 145 words per bar 😳😜 it was almost impossible, without using the liner notes, which was for the weak. 😅
🎶 🎶🎶🎶
Like a Showbiz Kid, you got your Steely Dan TShirt for back pain.
Yep. Even now that I’ve read them, learned them, marveled at them… I still fluff them every time ❤😂
That is David Sanborn on sax....fantastic! "Right" is another soulful song on the Young American album. Mike Garson is a god on piano for Bowie.
One of my faves
Love me some soulful Bowie ❤
Me too!! His voice is like trying to escape from his soul it sounds like at points. It's so catchy too lol
@@L33Reacts sooo catchy Your brain will be replaying it at a lot A Bowie Implant
I love the part where the singers say"I heard the news today. Oh boy", taken from a Beatles song.
You should hear his "I'm Afraid Of Americans". Great version in his BBC performance video.
First time I saw Bowie was in a TV commercial advertising his Young American tour. That would have been around 1975 or '76.
"He got so much soul in that little ass body of his" Perfect definition of him 😂💓
Hahaha I thought so too. 😅 ❤️ what a dude. He's amazing.
@@L33Reacts and you've only just started too theres still SO MUCH to check out lol
I was at his Diamond Dogs concert in 1974. "Young Americans " was his encore (this was prior to the song's release) and people BOOED!
Reminds me of this from The Fountainhead:
“Thousands of years ago, the first man discovered how to make fire. He was probably burned at the stake he had taught his brothers to light. He was considered an evildoer who had dealt with a demon mankind dreaded. But thereafter men had fire to keep them warm, to cook their food, to light their caves. He had left them a gift they had not conceived and he had lifted darkness off the earth. Centuries later, the first man invented the wheel. He was probably torn on the rack he had taught his brothers to build. He was considered a transgressor who ventured into forbidden territory. But thereafter, men could travel past any horizon. He had left them a gift they had not conceived and he had opened the roads of the world. “That man, the unsubmissive and first, stands in the opening chapter of every legend mankind has recorded about its beginning. Prometheus was chained to a rock and torn by vultures-because he had stolen the fire of the gods. Adam was condemned to suffer-because he had eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge. Whatever the legend, somewhere in the shadows of its memory mankind knew that its glory began with one and that that one paid for his courage...."
There have always been those who want to freeze their artists in a moment,no change,no growth. They are idiots and Bowie never gave a fig! Thank the Universe
@@AP-gb3eh They were out of luck with Bowie then lol. He never ceased to evolve and innovate.
Classic Bowie. One of his best. Really enjoyed your reaction to Stay, which is his best for me. David Sanborn is a jazz fusion saxophonist best known for his SNL band appearances and his amazing solo career.
I saw Bowie 6 times back in the 70's, 💖Bowie 🤘🥰🎶
David Sanborn a legend - who may have heard him on Steely Dan.
Bowie request: Quicksand 😎
One of the first white people to appear on Soul Train
I wish I could post pictures in the comments. When I used to live in Jersey City, New Jersey, seven years ago, they put up a new building and down one whole side of it was a photo of David Bowie and you couldn’t even see the windows, it was like a 10 story building. It was huge, I assume it’s still there. I couldn’t figure out if it was a painting or a tapestry because there has to be windows. It’s pretty cool. I walked past it twice a day going to and from work.
There is a Bowie song from this era categorized as plastic funk. The song is "Fame". It was co-written by John Lennon. It is a must.
Keep reacting to David Bowie a class act - a sheer Legend - Simple as that by Number 1 David Bowie fan
David sanborn introduced SRV on your crossfire reaction. He is great himself.
This is one of his biggest hit albums loved by every Bowie fan
For Bowie soul and funk: Try cuts from Bowie's Young Americans album with Luther Vandross back-up singers and David Sanborn on killer saxophone, like Somebody Up There Likes Me, Win, Fascination, Right and Can You Hear Me. Also Carlos Alomar funk on Secret Life of Arabia (Heroes album). His Let’s Dance album produced by Chic’s Nile Rogers (and it’s all good!). From Station to Station album: Stay. Also Black Tie, White Noise with Al B. Sure.…Tonight with Tina Turner... Knock on Wood (David Live, 1975) A friend of the the Black community - complained to MTV about Black videos being relegated to early morning. Married to Somali super-model Iman.
This whole album is fantastic!
Every Bowie album is a surprise
Great reaction Lee! At the time, with Diamond Dogs, Bowie was just becoming accepted by some of the hardcore Rock fans as being proper Rock. For him to then go Soul (which for various reasons was considered just like Pop) was a real betrayal. Now, of course, this album shines as one of his greatest and I think much of the Rock snobbery has vanished.
Look Héroes album with Robert Fripp from King Crimson in It and of course Ziggy Stardust album ( Moonage daydream specially mind blowing).......Bowie one of the GOAT,s........Beatles, Bowie, Rolling Stones and El vis......The 4 Big Names in Music History
David Sanborn on saxophone- the same guy that hosted “Night Music”, which you have posted at least twice. Also (maybe for Female Friday🤞🏻): one of the backing vocalists is Jean Millington, Bowie’s girlfriend at the time. She and her sister June put together an all female band called “Fanny”. You should give them a listen. Their covers of “Special Care” and “Hey Bulldog” are great and original songs “Charity Ball” and “Place in the Country” are too.
Bowie's great lyrics, great vocals and catchy as hell to boot.
Because my tastes crossed so many styles I didn’t have many groups I dug into.
I wasn’t a country fan 40+ years ago, nor was I ever a heavy metal or grunge fan.
But I did always enjoy David Bowie;)
I think this is one of my fave Bowie tracks, thanks for the reaction, Lee.
Glad you enjoyed it my friend! I really did too. That was so damn catchy and cool 😎
Now you are getting to some of my favorite Bowie songs. I love all the old stuff.
Anyone who hopes that Bowie will "never change" is gonna be disappointed. He was a true artist who explored wherever his curiosity led the way.
He was this amazing Artist ( and I do not use that word lightly) who was just always leading the way . Just a great keep up or fk off he never seemed to pay attention to those who cried stay the same . RIP to unique and brilliant soul
Bowie one of a kind so diverse
Bowie is an artist that has various periods. I remember someone took this song and matched it to video of “The Singing Nun”. 😂
Absolutley one of his best!🔥🤘✌
Diamond Dogs was released the year prior. It had the Issac Hayes “Theme from Shaft” influenced song 1984. 1984 should have given fans a glimpse of things to come in Bowie land.
This song reaction just got you another subscriber. Bring on the amazing Bowie! It doesn't hurt that you've done SRV either. 👍
That album and Station to Station are my favorites. You've got "Win", "Fascination" and, more than anything, "Right", which absolutely destroys me.
You already did S to S, and I've told you how I feel about that. The only track you haven't covered is the one where Iggy's girlfriend gets devoured by a TV. I have a feeling you won't be able to avoid that for long.
The lyrics are crazy good, hard to catch them all from the vocals (at my age anyway-lol).
They make the song for me ❤
"Ch-ch-changes..."
"Ch- ch- ch- ch- changes"!
One of my very favorite Bowie albums! From this album, check out Fame (with John Lennon) and Somebody Up There Likes Me. From other albums: Suffragette City, TVC19, Let's Dance (with Stevie Ray Vaughn), Queen Bitch, Jean Jeanie... I can go on and on!
Blue eyed soul.
Bowie is a deep dive. He was his own genre. You probably won't hear suggestions for this one of is, but Lady Stardust is just gorgeous, and it was written about Marc Bolan, the original glam rocker. Speaking of which, you need to react to Bang a Gong (don't do the video for that one).
Before I forget: China Girl (video is cool!) co-written with Iggy Pop, Heroes, Starman, Jean Genie, Ashes to Ashes, too many to name of his, But keep doing Bowie. Oh, some trivia, and someone else you need to hear, well, a few people lol - David Bowie put out an album called 'Low'. There is a new wave/power pop icon by the name of Nick Lowe, who put out an album right afterwards called 'Bowi' in response (and to be honest, tribute). Nick Lowe wrote the perfect power pop song called Cruel to Be Kind and when you hear that you will not be able to get it out of your head! Some others of his circle at the time to check out are Elvis Costello and Dave Edmunds. They are all uber talented and can't be missed out. :)
One of my favorites among many favorites of his, despite his constant reinvention of himself.
The reference to A Day in the life, and another reference to John Lennon in Bowies song Life on Mars. He co wrote Fame with Lennon. Bit of trivia. AURORA's live cover of Life on Mars is worth a look. Actually anything AURORA does is worth a look. Aside from being a genius singer and songwriter, her arrangements of covers are astonishing. Her cover of the Beatles Across The Universe is pure genius.
5:50 Beatles "A Day in the Life" reference
got to do Fantastic Voyage
I know it's controversial but at the moment I am 1. Aladdin Sane 2. Diamond Dogs 3. Hunky Dory 4. TRAFOZSATSFM 5. Young Americans. The top 5 move around a bit over time but they all have an all time favourite track. This title track is immense in depth and style.
Lee, you would love every Aladdin Sane album song, it's mad as shit, as the title implies, and ends with the most beautifully soft finale ever.
The decade of diversity in music. There were so many different styles of each genre.
Great song! Thanks!
try Rock and Roll Suicide....................
First heard this one ~1974 on a juke box in Bar Harbor, Maine, and liked it ever since. Bowie took performance art places where no man had ever gone. So good and durable, never mind remembering President Nixon's bills, can you forget all the bills ex-President Trump will have to pay?
love the SD Tshirt my Bro..
You should react to David Bowie performing "Fame" on Soul Train, gacked to the gills on coke
Effortlessly cool 😎
This album was recorded here in Philly at Sigma Sound Studio. One of my favorites. ✌️♥️🎶
Bowie Was A Musical Chameleon.
Fantastic song n HUGGE HIT n album!!
Fame had Lennon on it!
David Sanborn...huuugely popular sax player....hosted the TV show, "Night Music" that SRV played "Crossfire" on.
.
Have you done the live video of Bowie in Berlin...check out the 'story' about the song first...and then brace yourself for the MOST powerful version of "Heroes".
It will live in your head rent-free forever.
BTW-Saw Bowies Station to Station tour live.
Ditched work for it (bartender). Someone reported me, was fired. Zero regrets.
I love all 70s Bowie, especially the early 70s, but if push comes to shove, Young Americans is my fave Bowie track despite the fact I still can't sing along to all those tricksy lyrics.
I did hit replay.
Best Bowie song of all time for me, I would say ❤ Well, along with a few others
Luther Vandross, Stop to Love. Fire and ironically it’s him with two back up female singers kind of like the lineup with this song. He’s got a real nice voice. I just paused this video and went and watched it lol
Yup. The Young Americans album alienated a lot of Bowie fans at the time. In retrospect, it seems especially strange, considering the different styles he'd already embraced from Space Oddity, to The Man Who Sold the World, to Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust.
Of course, back in the 1970s, there was little overlap between fans of soul music and fans of rock. Occasionally you'd get an artist or an album that appealed to both (Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life springs to mind), but it wasn't that common. For every fan who jumped off the Bowie train at this point, however, he gained a new one and he began adding a whole new group of fans. The divisions were healed to some extent with the release of the Station to Station album which included both soul tracks (Golden Years) and his trademark experimental rock (the title track).
(At least, that's how I remember it playing out!)
You missed a tip-of-the-hat to The Beatles at 5:52
Imagine AM radio muscle car on the highway at 1 am trancending! Ps luv ur stuff but havnt seen the icon yet
The Dick Cavett version is really worth watching. Bowie's voice is at about 50% because of cocaine or a cold, but it doesn't matter because the performance is so good.
As for requests, how about something completely different, a brilliant but not very known track called No Plan off his last posthumous ep. The music video is quietly gorgeous.
Speaking of reinventing and switching up, no matter what one thinks of them, U2 made a complete 180 and went from The Joshua Tree kind of songs to the new industrial, dance, sound they developed for Achtung Baby. Not sure how you feel about them, but if you don't hate them, all the songs on that album are worth a listen. Casual fans will say One was their masterpiece from it, but it's not near the top for die-hard fans, although it's amazing too.
Controversial? I never met anyone that didn't like this song! Shows off his BIG range... from low low notes to falsetto high notes fluidly.
When you can hear Win youl see, wuats pop for..
L O L with the zinger on Metallica. Don’t get me wrong, I love Metallica since I was a child, which means by the time I was a older teenager I was kind of bored of it. And this was after the injustice for all and black album era. And then I heard Pantera and Testament, thank God. I still work out with Kill ‘Em All every time. It’s also good for jogging. Oh, and I really love this Bowie tune, The back up lines really make it special.❤
I can’t remember if it was this album or Heroes, but David was snorting so much cocaine during his “thin white duke” period that he completely forgot making one of them. In a sane world, it would be this one.
Dukesday?
You were talking through the best line and missed it❤
You were commenting and missed what I said ❤️
@@L33Reacts Then I apologise. Keep up the good work 👍
"Lookin' at you Metallica"... also lookin' at you Ten Years After.
Glad you played the album version and not the inferior single version with its horrible clunky edit. Be sure to play any album version over a single version of any Bowie song if you can e.g. Heroes, TVC15 etc. They are far superior. Great review 👍🏻
May I suggest some awesome Aussie bands? Like:
The Saints, Lime Spiders, The Scientists, The Hitmen, Radio Birdman, Split Enz (NZ), and everything by the Finn brothers, Ed Keupper, Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes,... there's so many I'm sure you'd like
Neil Finn is the favourite songwriter of Paul McCartny
I've actually done a track or two by split enz! Such an interesting band lol I loved it. I will definitely write these down, thank you!
@@L33Reacts start with late 70s band The Saints..."I'm Stranded" and "Know Your Product" ...punk pioneers

You should listen to "Lazarus" from Bowie's last album. Except for Johny Cash's "Hurt" there is no better example of a great artist's reflection on their own life and death. One of those weird coincidences. After starting this, I realized Trent Reznor wrote "Hurt" and Bowie did a collaboration with Reznor called "I'm an American". And Kevin Bacon played sax on all three songs. For your listening pleasure or to react to. ruclips.net/video/y-JqH1M4Ya8/видео.html
That is a strange connection. I'll definitely add that one to the list. I've already heard some of blackstar from back when it came out. Random. But I checked it out after he passed. Was my first encounter with him
@@L33ReactsLee, Blackstar deserves a deep listen even a second one. It’s raw and deep and bleak and mysterious. His parting gift to the world ❤
The song is I’m Afraid of Americans. Trent did the popular remix and stars in the video. They also did a tour together around 1995, a full collaboration, both bands headlining, 5 shared Bowie/NIN song, pretty cool.
@@vegdagol2843 Yea it's been ages since I saw the video, but as I recall it your title makes more sense. Did Kevin Bacon tour with them.
Do “Fame”
I know you don't owe me but I wish you would let me ask one favor from you. Gimme Todd Rundgren's Initiation. A marvel for it's time, 1975. Side 1 is more 'accessible' except for Real Man it's not exactly commercial. Side 2 is the Alice Bailey inspired A Treatise on Cosmic Fire. The original album was an extraordinary, for the time, nearly 70 minutes long on a single LP. A difficult first time listen that rewards subsequent listening efforts. Headphones will come in real handy
LOL Metallica all sounds the same? No way dude. Keep up the Bowie…FASHION
New Metallica, yes. OG Metallica, no. They were fucking amazing.
John Lennon too
Did you catch the Beatles ref?
You gotta hit Kraftwerk big time….inspired “Station To Station”….check out “Trans Europe Express”, and many more…..
