Make A Paper Mache Mannequin Head

  • I didn't realize that I needed a mannequin head until I took a closer look at the "family photo" of the lion masks on my website. They're held up with canning jars that are sitting on Scotch tape cartons!
So I decided to make a pattern that was easy to put together, so I could make three or four of them really fast. I wanted them to be very plain, so they wouldn't look funny if I used more than one in the same photo.
When I got one done, I realized that it would be a lot of fun to use them for character sculptures too - because most cartoon and animated characters don't have bones. The simple mannequin pattern doesn't have bones, either. I haven't yet tried using it for that purpose, so I hope you'll give me some suggestions for what character I should try first. 😊
You can find the pattern here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/ma...
There are two videos on that page that show you how the pattern goes together. The second video also has some tips on two different ways you can use the pattern for sculpting characters. Have fun! 👩‍🦳

Your headdresses are beautiful. These mannequins should be helpful while you're making your designs. Have fun with them. 😊

I think it would be neat to transform it to a plant holder…with the center of the head cutout. You could use a plastic nursery container to figure out the diameter/circumference. I am in the middle of making a wire dress form which is formed I will be adding the wire mesh tomorrow. It is for my garden. I will check your video out and possibly take it up a notch and add a head like I described. I will be sure to send you a picture afterwards 😊
I am taking pictures of step by step.

What an interesting idea! My father used the foam mannequins for his 'pothead' planters. He made a mold using the heads, and then created the final pots with concrete. I can't wait to see the sculpture you're making for your garden. 😊

These are great! I collect latex masks and I've been using paper towel rolls and jars to prop them up because the Styrofoam heads supposedly cause the latex to turn brittle or warp. Now, I can just make a bunch of these.

      @UltimatePaperMache  2 месяца назад +1

That would be perfect! There seems to be a lot of different ways to use them that I hadn't thought of myself.

What a great idea! I was thinking about this when watching one of your videos. So glad to see you have done this. All I thought of
was those Styrofoam Wig heads. And I can't stand the sound of them. Way to go.

Just found your channel. This is amazing. I was watching someone make a tentacle and the papier mache was rough. I wondered how to make it smooth so it would look more organic. Found your channel and here I am. Brilliant stuff. Subbed in a second.

that looks a lot like the planar head I had to learn how to draw from in highschool - those are gold for learning/practicing observational drawing skills but the plaster ones are really expensive. I might just make one!

It's funny - that's what my daughter said, too. It wasn't what I was thinking about when I made it, but it could be a good way to learn to draw shadows and shapes. Interesting! :)

I see that you are getting a "head" on your projects. It is sort of funny because I used a jar to display one of my art projects and I just covered it with a piece of cloth. It is so neat how you come up with so many different projects. With so many different kids of followers I bet you have something for everyone. Great job on the video and the project. Good to see you!!!!!!

A cloth would have been a good idea - I don't know why I didn't think of that, five years ago. 😜

Look forward to seeing you create something using that book (I have it ready to purchase on Kindle if it works out). I'm looking to make paper mache heads for marionettes and have been trying to figure out the best way to get an "armature". This may be it.
Also to get the percantage for reducing increasing that pattern size the formula is (taking any one of the dimensions, only need one, that will give you the percentage for all eg. width) [what you want it to be DIVIDED BY what it is MULTIPLIED BY 100], that will give you a percentage for reducing increasing on a photocopier or in software.
