How to Beat DIY Procrastination EVERY TIME

- In this transformative video, I not only talk the talk but also walk the walk as I embark on a daunting DIY task: insulating the roof of my own home. Throughout this monotonous endeavor, I share seven invaluable lessons that have enabled me to conquer procrastination and stay motivated.
Firstly, I emphasize the importance of tidying up, highlighting its impact on mental clarity. Then, I introduce the "getting started" method, employing the 3-2-1 technique to overcome inertia and dive into tasks headfirst. Next, I discuss the power of breaking down large tasks into smaller, more manageable goals.
Celebrating successes, no matter how small, becomes a crucial aspect of staying motivated, as does optimizing your environment to facilitate action. I delve into the psychology behind why action precedes motivation and the role of positive distractions, such as audio content, in making tasks more enjoyable.
These seven lessons offer a comprehensive toolkit for combating DIY procrastination, a common obstacle faced by many. Join me on this journey as we unlock the secrets to sustained productivity and accomplishment in our DIY endeavors.

This probably THE SINGLE BEST DIY video on RUclips that I’ve ever watched. Should be mandatory viewing for anyone who’s ever tired to do a decent sized DIY project.
👏 🎉😅
Also, massive congrats on the insulation, I’ve been willing you on to get that done for months because it’s a f*kin shite job (did my loft last Jan) but it feels SOOO GOOD once it’s done.
Props bud, keep pushing!
Also “got the wrong ‘kin brake pads didn’t I” - know you’re pain. Buying car parts is like fucking jeopardy… even part numbers don’t seem to be sacred sometimes anymore..
Hopefully the algorithm will work out that it's the best DIY video too 😂 I got the wrong pads even though I used the registration number 🤦 mike brewer can do one
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT HOLD OUT YER AAANNNND’
Brilliant list. I'd add don't be afraid to take your time to plan and work out everything that's needed and how it's all going to fit together, then the job will just all fall into place as you go. Many people get hung up on wanting to make 'visible progress', then they paint themselves into a corner with the job, because they crack on with what's easy or obvious without thinking ahead. Some guys especially need to learn how to (politely) tell their wife to F-off when she says they haven't done much in the time. Most jobs take a lot of prep, then it all comes together surprisingly quickly.
For me procrastination is 9/10 of any job. I'm going to get stuck in now!
Aiden, you can have a job as a motivational speaker once you've finished the house project. All good lessons presented in a very entertaining format. Good luck with all your projects.
Thanks! 😃
1. Tidy up
2. Get started/get your tools out
3. Break it down (in smaller tasks)
4. Celebrate your success
5. Set up your environment (giving you less choice not to start)
6. Do something (else)
7. Positive distraction
I'm going to print this
Haha I was thinking maybe I should do a pdf so I can get everyone's email 😆 apparently that's something I should be doing
I couldn't finish the final 1 minute of the video as I need to get ready to go to finish my daughter's full plumbing job............Thank You!!!!!
😆 hope you had fun
Be careful your positivity levels don't explode dangerously when this f£&^'n rain stops and everything dries up. Briliant advice - cheers!
Thank you for the unexpected topic and your well presented comments.
I’ve been accused (accurately) of being slow to finish projects and that I have poor time management skills (not accurate). After studying the problem with a mirror, at length, I came up with two conclusions. First, find out how well your accuser understands exactly what it takes to complete a project and if you have the same quality level goal in mind. And second, unless someone is experienced with making and repairing and modifying and fitting and blah blah blah, they won’t recognize what I’m still trying to put into a concise axiom that I find universally present on all but the simplest tasks. A long version goes like this:
Whatever you want to do, unpredicted requirements will surface making a precise estimate of the time required almost impossible and usually less than what a safe estimate would be. The estimator/worker takes the blame of course and because I’m duece determined to do exceptional work, my reputation for being slow persists. I’ve tried to improve my accuracy but learned to accept this appearance. In any case I’ve never had to advertise nor been out of work (piano restoration) over the 44 years in business. Now, why am I rambling on here when i should be in the shop?
We have all been there mate
Great advice to tidy. I always clear the decks between projects. And don't forget to eat!
A journey of a thousand miles starts with but a single step....
Some brilliant points made, I can very much relate and I often overthink and become overwhelmed by a job. Recently it was framing/lining the old external door as an internal, never done it before and kept putting it off until it was holding me up. Broke it down into smaller chunks 1 day was building the frame around the door, another getting the wall/cavity prepped and then finally fixing it in and then I felt great and had a beer. Good to see the progress on the insulation, I find jobs that show more visual progress are easier to keep at.
Love this video. Currently renovating a 160 yr old cottage and living in a caravan in the front garden. All good advice and helpful, thank you. Been enjoying your journey/build and taken many tips 👌
Sounds awesome 🙌
Sounds awesome 🙌
Cracking video Aiden. And overcoming your procrastination by making a video about procrastination is a total boss move.
Thanks Max 😁
Your channel is a big motivation for me man. This video is fantastic and insightful. I hope everyone appreciates that putting something together like this, especially over a long period of time and making it so cohesive is actually far more complicated than it might appear.
I appreciate that! Hopefully the algorithm will push it abit more
Brilliant video dude. This effected my on working on the house twice, first time was 6 months of no motivation, followed by a year of progress followed by another year of nothing. To be honest my biggest motivator is when I see my neighbour cracking on with his DIY 😂🙈
Haha that's typical hey, oh next door just cut their grass...right then 😅
My back gardens a mess so I've split it up in to four manageable areas 👍😉
You can do it!
that video is so on the money! well done for you tenacity, i'm about to start a similar project and have followed your project for motivation and visualization of the jobs that are coming! well done so far.🙂
Good luck!
Fantastic work on filming this one. And thanks for the tips on something we all struggle with 😅
Any time!
Tidying up at the end of the day is my biggest problem, it's easy just to drop stuff in the garage and shut the door.
Haha I do that, but then it's quite stressful when I can't find my tools 🙈
Good luck on your build mate. Just come across your channel and watched a few of your videos. The internet makes all of these things look easy, but as you show, a lot of hard work needs to go in to each part.
I hope to have a few smaller projects in the future, so at the moment just seeing how everyone does it and learning as much as i can.
Welcome aboard!
Very valid points made and very well presented. I can relate to all of the issues you highlighted. Great video 👍.
Thanks buddy 🙂
Brilliant as ever. Very Zen.How do you eat and elephant ?............ Only in bite sized pieces !
Great video buddy. Seems I naturally follow these guidelines. It’s the bastard weather that’s stopping me as I’m working on sorting the garden, patio, retaining wall etc 😫
Crazy weather recently hey! 😬🙈
Dude, you're an inspiration.
Thanks buddy
I find I'm crap before lunchtime, then get really motivated around 3pm, start a job, realise I haven't got the tool/fixings/whatever. Give up, try again tomorrow!
Other way around for me, start the day super motivated, come midday realise I need additional tools/fixings/whatever and spend the afternoon walking round Wickes 😅
@@101projects2 No motivation till after 3 pm then think about starting a job but talk myself out of it cos it's too late in the day.
Sounds familiar 😆 but some times I do actually start at 4pm
Wow Aiden, I think you called out every challenge I have with our build at the moment. We had a small celebration being complete enough to sell the caravan and move back in but it's not that much better than your sleeping in your barn. After my lack of knowledge my biggest frustration is crap work by other trades. I have spent the last week installing PIR with Gapotape. I WISH one trade would consider who follows them. None of our timbers are the same distance apart (not even close) and they have a 10mm plus drift from one end to the other. I seem to spend so much time trying to work around poor workmanship. That said your video really captures the challenge and how to stay motivated, Thank you so much for that!
I had to remind myself quite a few times that at least I wasn't cutting PIR 😅 I definitely would have lost the will to live
What a brilliant video to get from a somewhat monotonous task... That scene of the dancing shadow was brilliant! 😂
Excellent video, Although I prefer to just not set myself motivational DIY targets or goals, then I can't be disappointed when I don't achieve them, but am happy when I over achieve, true story 😅
Yes, great stuff, great lessons for DIY and for any kind of work. I could really go a Cornetto now tho...
Lou bought 2 more boxes! 😩 I only got the 1st Cornetto box for the insulation
Super video! It put a big grin on my face when other videos on the subject could've put me to sleep. Totally relevant to other tasks, not just DIY; in fact a great way to teach this to others so I hope 'the algorithm' puts this in other genres to help grow the channel. Now, where's my broom...?
🤞
Paralyses through analysis. Over-thinking. Brilliant people have this. My issue. Thanks for the reminder I'm not alone. And those tips to get through it. Now that rain has f*cked off (fingers crossed) I can get back to finishing the bathroom vanity I started in January in the backyard outdoor 'shop.' Take care & stay safe.
I'm not sure the rain has gone just yet 😅
Yer no wrong there M8. Sigh. Take care and stay safe.
Fantastic video, very insightful and will hit home with everyone who starts a project.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, thank you!
Your best video so far, applicable to all of us at some time or another.
Hopefully the algorithm will concur 🤞
Stair rail now up 😊 great video
Yes! 🙌 Thank you
Brilliant - I need all these lessons 🤣
Hope they help...go Joanne 🙌😆
Needed this. Top content!
Thanks 👍
Excellent video Aiden, but are you sure setting up a bed in there was your own idea?😉🤣👍
Yes 😁 she didn't think I would actually do it though 😄
Some great tips....and it seems to have worked. 👍
Saw the sleeping stuff in an earlier video and thought you were kicked out of the comfy bed for a while haha glad to see that wasn't the case.
Haha all good but definitely a good idea otherwise I wouldn't have got it done 😅
Well done Aiden - you are a legend - keep going - it will all be worth it in the end 👍
subscribed. Any mad anarchist breaking the rules and standing on the top of those modern ladders is my sort of youtuber. Right, off to procrastinate or perhaps buy sand.
😆🤫 don't tell HSE 😉
The truth in this video 🤯
Loved this! Subbed 👍🏻
This is worth years of therapy!!! Well done!
😁😉
Brilliant. Been there many times. Thank you 👌👍👏
I think I will put this on every weekend so I can crack on with my diy.
My problem is paying people to do a job and then it either being shit or actually not done. From the car to everything else. Get let down so much it’s better to do it yourself as it gets done properly and dosnt cost me to do it again correctly.
Yep, it just a little longer sometimes but at least you know it's done properly
biggest lesson is it no such thing as a simple job and always takes longer than u think
Aiden, feels like this video, was just for me. Hopefully, over the next few weeks, I'll be following your lessons. Good man 👍
Awesome 👍
I am gunna clear my garage Tomw now coz of you lad
Flipping brilliant 😁
Love it! Very well observed!
Tell you what, I should’ve watched this earlier. It was my day off today and I was meant to take the bathroom door down to strip and repair it, but its the fourth one I’ll have done and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. A job for another day!
You'll have it done before long though hey 😉
I was going to get on with something then a notification for this video came through.
😂 same!
🙈
Love your vids mate 👌🏻
Thanks mate 👍
Thanks Mate
what a great video, I needed this.
This is so me!
Go Aiden Go Aiden Go!!!
Great video. Clearly you are taking action. The random off piste vids of late were the procrastination playing out. Look fwd to seeing you nailing progress. Keep going bud
Ah but it's either off piste or no video 🫤
Wise words, so who is in the RUclips crew ?
I've just done a community post for who I was out with today 😉
Smart people procrastinate most 🤔 well I must be a member of Mensa 🤣 love the video me down to a tee 🙌🏼 but I will implement you seven steps but first ……………………kidding
I once did an iq test and got 160 😆 that explains alot hu 😂🤣
This sounds like a helpful video, I'll watch it later...
Bet you were made up to finally have the bulk of that insulation off the floor. It's been there since I started following the channel! All great points mate, and I'm sure everyone who watches can relate 100% - enjoy the YT day/night out!
Still need to finish it off though 😩😆
Still need to finish it off though 😩😆
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT You can do it! Just want you to know, off the back of this video, I tidied up the house and finally painted the hall stairs and landing - a job I've been putting off for almost 3 years now 🙈 Feels so good to finally have it done. Plus now that's done, the jobs I kept saying "well I can't do that until the hall is painted" are now all at the top of the list. Hopefully the motivation continues and I can box those off too... maybe.
@@davetay44 well done 🙌
Dude, you are awesome!!!😜
You are!
Am sure Mr Keith owes you big time ;-)
He's penciled in 😉
It’s like GCSE bitesize all over again - I’m having PTSD flashbacks
Oh god 😅
Lesson 8: Watch a youtube video, promise yourself you'll start tomorrow. And then have a nap.
🤣😂
I think cornettos are one of the best ice creams 😂😂😂
The question is, did you go and get some after seeing this?! Maybe I should have got them to sponsor me 😆
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
My problem is I can’t handle the sugar anymore. I buy sugar free ice cream, it’s nice but I would still love a cornetto 😂😂😂
How did you know about the handrail and the on-suite?
From the community post when I asked everyone about their experience with DIY motivation and procrastination
Great video
Thanks!
Thanks!
I’ve tried to follow the 7 rules but I cannot be bothered😊😊
Guru Iron Maiden!
Aiden, you are required by law to show the cats in every video now. The interwebs will get mad if you don't.
Yeah, show us the cats. We saw a bit of the dog - Arfur - but we are cat people!! 👍
Yes!! More Arthur, Millie, Tillie and Willy 😁
@@keefykeef the man himself!
I'll try 😉
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
Don't procrastinate just get those cats in there. 😂😂😂😂
You need a little fanny pack so you can be Mr Motivator 😂 btw I just procrastinated by watching your video on how to beat procrastination
I think a lot of people did the same 😆
Nice one
Good, positive mental attitude
Lovin it.
Though more on how the cats are settling in please too 🙏
I was thinking a video about them after 6 months or a year 😅

I think your partner procrastinates in order to get a lift in the car to her running spot. 😂
Stage 1: tidy up all your tools & materials. Stage 2: where the hell have I put my tools & materials?
mate we have all been there
i just finished boarding and strengthing the floor of my garage roof for storage and new lights and celining in there then the mrs says lets sell and move there was plenty of ffs as it was to store her crap
😂
Why would I want to go and do some jobs when I can sit on my arse and watch this great stuff instead? F*** it, I'll do it later.
Is it OK to fill your roofing voids with that insulation? Is there not supposed to be an air gap between it and the roofing membrane
It looks like you watched the other video where I explained that I still (in theory) have an air gap 😉 I'm not sure it matters that much though with the membrane that I've got plus I don't have to maintain the slight sag in the membrane that you would normally have
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT correct, I have watched the other video (and several more now). It's an amazing project you have there, I'm in awe at what you're doing. Good luck with it all.
Reading between the lines, I’d say you’ve been kicked out either cos you haven’t finished the barn yet or your very obvious Cornetto problem🍦😁
She bought me 2 more boxes! 😅
Hope we haven't got to wait two weeks for the next video. What happened last week 😢
Ah it's abit difficult to do a video every week when the thing you're doing takes 3 weeks 😅
The hubby and I look forward to Thursday evenings. We've had our PP 2 years and still haven't started 😅
@@LindaHall-zg4uw get your skates on 🤪 you'll end up taking longer than me 😆
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT we could teach you a thing or two about procrastinating lol. We are just heading back to planning with a few changes so could be another couple of years before we start 🤣
