  • Octaves are perhaps the most fundamental part of piano technique, recognised since Joseph Haydn as the fundamental difference between piano on the one hand and organ/harpsichord on the other.
    Debussy's Etudes, written toward the end of his life, represent a turning away for music representation of pictures and toward a great abstraction, the exploration of the possibilities of different scales.
