  • @JamesEberhardt
    @JamesEberhardt 5 лет назад +33

    Great idea. One tip though: place a spacer between the doors before you drill the hinges in. Something about 1/16" - 1/8". This will ensure the doors are parallel, but also ensure the edges don't bump against each other when opening and closing them. You can see the door on the left move just a little when the door on the right is opened at 5:35.
    Great idea! I'm looking for ideas for Kallax doors.

  • @brianmi40
    @brianmi40 4 года назад

    Be careful with those LEGS: Kallax is cardboard filled, and not solid wood. The surface 'skin' won't put up with much stress, such as PUSHING this to SLIDE it across the floor could easily tear the legs loose. Additionally, given that same thin "skin", it's prone to easy damage when bumping.
    To easily solve both of these, buy a small sheet of 5/8" plywood as Home Depot, and cut it sized to 1/4" or so overhang on the Left and Right ends, and also in the Front (no overhang in the back is necessary!). Now paint the edges and outer 1/2" of the perimeter that will be exposed or so white to match, and glue and screw this to the bottom of your cabinet, and then attach the legs to this plywood.
    NOW you have a sturdy cabinet that will better hold the LEGS, and with the 1/4" overhang it will protect the easier to damage cardboard filled board that Kallax has...
    Your doors will also be subject to the same risks by the hinges being screwed into the hollow sides, so be very careful with them!

    I‘m trying to recreate this right now and I‘m stuck - what kind of hinges are you using? The regular ones I found at my local hardware store won’t work since the door isn’t placed at the very edge of the shelf. Help! 😩 Can I get similar ones from Amazon?

    Love this idea!! I have the 2x8 cubicle kallax, do you think the dimensions for the doors would work for this longer piece--if I just attached a second set of doors?

    You guys should do something similar with the 8 cube organizer! With black & walnut stain wood !! I have an old kallax cube I was thinking about selling but now I'm thinking about redoing it! Painting it black and adding wooden features but I'm not professional and have no idea where to start

    Oh my god, this would be super cute for a baby's bedroom, with like the small clothes hanging and the small shoes. Kinda want to save this and make this when I get kids, LOL

    Hey guys, I want to recreate this myself and don't find this kind of door hinge in Germany. Does anyone know how this specific type of hinge is called? This would be so helpful!

    Favorite channel on RUclips! My favorite part is how you drilled into the furniture for the center hole of the hardware straight top plate!

    I would be careful with the wood used for the doors and make every effort to minimize the weight. I have added shelves to several kallax systems using and when drilling for the shelf pins you will quickly discover the kallax does not have solid cores designed to hold much weight. I may be wrong but I could see a heavy solid wood door panel start sagging over time as the screw holes get some basic wear and tear. Granted the kallax they are using sells between $35-$40 so replacing it after a a year or isn’t exactly a big deal. But be aware that it has a waffle type inner structure not really designed to hold anything drilled into it.

    I thought I recognized part of this video in an upcycling video from another channel!! They aren't giving credit to you, though, but I put in a comment that that part belongs to this video.
    ruclips.net/video/x0Bk4CqyL1k/видео.html, at about minute 5:00 is the section (even they have Kelsey apppearing in it!)

    So, I wanted to update my Ikea Kallax and thought, there must have been someone who did this already - and here you are. I have only one concerning question with you update. Since the update, has the legs stud up?

    I know someone has probably already said this, but the original was called the Expedite; they changed it slightly to it's new design (which is pretty much the same).

    Could you pull this off with the larger 3x3 or 1x2 versions from target? Or would this need to be a different project?
