Rain Gutter Grow System - RGGS Video Tutorial on Using Netcups with Trays

  • This was my RGGS version 1.0 first attempt as I originally added the net cups to the bottom of the fabric pots. On my Rain Garden Grow System Version 2.0 or second attempt I added the net cup to the trays instead and also started using the old lost socks to use on the net cup to keep the dirt out of the gutter. This is kind of outdoor hydroponic system that auto waters itself with a a float that sits in the rain gutter and is connected to a water line.
    The frame is made out of pallets that I cut into sections with a sawz all and I screwed together with wood screws. I added a some metal flashing roof line from home depot to add to the top corner more for looks than anything else. There are 16in x 8in blocks that I also bought from Home Depot which I dug a hole and put in the ground and leveled everything 4 feet. So everywhere the pallet we joined there is block underneath.
    Using the Fabric Pots allows the air pruning of the roots and also does not heat up in the sun like a plastic pot. The fabric pots also allows for the moisture to dry out much quicker than a plastic pot which works perfect with capillary effect of peat moss to watering the plant without making it to moist and drowning it.

    This is the most neatest & versatile RGGS I have seen. It covers everything up but still allows for adjustable spacing. The pots can easily be moved or replaced. Brilliant

    Awesome! Thanks for the sand idea. This past winter, in my "garden" bedroom, using cheap LED lights, I have grown ton of tomatoes in 7 gallon grow bags sitting in 27 gallon black rectangle tubs. However I have found it difficult outside. Because of the uneven ground, some are getting too wet. I'm going to put 1" or so of sand in the bags themselves as needed to see if that solves my moisture issues. Keep on sharing your great ideas! P.S. I call it my BRGS...Bedroom Grow System! ;-)

    i also like the idea of not cutting the bottoms of grow bags. It lets you easily set mature plants flat on ground while doing maint or rearranging
    late season garden. Have you tried only filling net cups without extra soil mix spread on lid ?

    • @rufflifehydro
      @rufflifehydro  2 года назад +2

      Yes, that is the way I am doing it this season and worked good. I use the sock over the netcup to keep debris out of the gutter and fill just the net cup with sand . Wicks good and does not break down over time. No need for sand acrooss the entire tray as it is overkill and to wet

    is it under the gutter? I don't understand how water gets to it. does it run under? How does it get there?

    • @rufflifehydro
      @rufflifehydro  2 года назад

      There is a float on the end of the gutter that works just like your toilet. When the gutter water goes down from the plant using it the float is triggered and fills in back up automatically just like your toilet. The water wicks up from the gutter to the plants through capillary effect like a wick. The fabric pots wick water

    • @DespiteMyself7

    • @rufflifehydro

      @@DespiteMyself7 Yeah the sand works fine in the net cups. I did a lot of testing and found you that you really can only use a sock around the net cup and not sand or peat moss. I am using both sand and just the net cup and sock with no issue as they been on the gutter for months. I need to upload video soon :0 as it on my computer...

    Do you really need to cover the netpots with socks if you arent cutting holes in the Growbags

    • @jamielingenfelter5206
      @jamielingenfelter5206 2 года назад +1

      The socks are to prevent the soil from fogging the system I’ve seen some people use pantyhose or they put a paint strainer net in the bucket itself and then put their soil and or perlite

    • @rufflifehydro
      @rufflifehydro  2 года назад

      yeah the socks worked great for keeping the soil out of the gutter. But I have moved on and are still using the the socks with the net cups but I just fill them with sand and it works better. For one it keeps the gutter much cleaner. I will be making a new video and showing an update on system as spring has started and my second season using has started.

    • @rickestrada6686
      @rickestrada6686 2 года назад

      Your movement will do when the American yeah so you don't need to put the socks over the net cups but it does keep everything out of the gutter and since then I switched to sand in the net cuts

    where did you get the fabric pots? What size is best?

    • @rickestrada6686
      @rickestrada6686 2 года назад +1

      I just bought them from Amazon and their 5 gallon on the pallet made gurter and ones aroubd the house are 2 and 3 gallon

    • @rufflifehydro
      @rufflifehydro  2 года назад +1

      I bought on Amazon as you can get around 2 dollars per pot. Depending on what you want to grow will determine the pot size. I am using 2 gallon and 3 gallon for herbs and lettuce. And 5 gallon pots for other things like tomatoes, onions, peppers. I have some 7 gallon pots but they start requiring much more soil and at the point I started doing some no dig gardening and that worked great. Things like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower did not work so well in 5 gallon pots but in the no dig I did this year worked great. I will post an update on the this year grow. I just did a new video on the seedling propagation with gutter system so a lot of those will be going into the pots

    • @rufflifehydro
      @rufflifehydro  2 года назад

      I have switched sand in the net cups as it works good as a wick and will not break down over time. But I have removed the sand from some of the net cups altogether and just use the sock over the net cup to wick to the fabric pot that wicks to the peat moss mix in the pot. So from my testing you do not need any material in the net cup but will make an update video. I got some other things that I been testing as I got a good moisture meter so I can measure accurately

  • @vivisasaki
    @vivisasaki 3 года назад +5

    This is genius. Does it work well? Would you change anything at all now that you have had this system working for a month?

    • @rickestrada6686
      @rickestrada6686 3 года назад +1

      Yeah it worked well as many of the plants went through their life cycle. I just started removing some of the plants from the gutter so I have a couple of ideas that I will try and post soon. Instead of all the peat moss in the bottom of the tray I am going to test sand as I just test out some seed trays I made using sand compared to the peat moss. I will post some videos when I see some results.

    • @rufflifehydro
      @rufflifehydro  2 года назад +2

      After more testing the sand works great but really you only need to put a sock around the net cups and that works fine from my early testing. Once you get the capillary effect going the water wick through the sock and sock wicks into the material of the fabric pot..

  • @jonathanharris8281

    Hi, are you using Larry's potting mix? also what kind of soil are you using at the bottom?

    • @rufflifehydro
      @rufflifehydro  2 года назад +3

      For the most part as I am using 66 percent peat moss to 33 compost. Then add some perlite, azomite, gypsum, alfalfa meal, epsom salt. If you are referring to bottom of the trays it was just pure peat moss. But I have moved away from that and using just sand as it worked out better for me. I will be uploading some new videos showing the setup as spring has started!

      Yeah to keep debris out of the gutter. Also you can use the sock as a wick which gives you the flexibility to make stretxh Nd make longer if tou have a deeper reservoir. Also I have swirched to just using sand to fill up the netcup as wicks good and deos nit break down over tone. Good luck with your grow!

    • @rufflifehydro

      The reason for the net cuts in the tray is just to wick water up from the rain gutter to the fabric pot. Since then I use the same method but now only put sand in the netcup and nothing and not the whole tray
