DIY Rain Gutter Hydroponics System

- I've dreamed about building a hydroponics setup like this for many years and it finally happened. This is how I built the best hydroponics rig out of PVC pipes and vinyl gutter spout. I had to custom make the end caps because the available ones were bad.

This is SOOOOOOOO nice looking!!!!! Can you post a step by step??
Step by Step video is coming soon!
I would like to see this experiment repeated directly into soil: leafless nodes versus leafed nodes ( without pre-rooting in water first). Thank you for this video! ❤
I will give it a try
You must have awesome parents risking a flood for your experiment!!!😂😂😂😂
Love your shirt 🌺 this project is AWESOME! Very well thought out design. Video is very informative! I can't wait to see your harvest!🥬
Me too it should be pretty sizable
Matt's about to share those X-Files 😮
This looks really good!
thank you! Im hoping to build up a pretty valuable patreon with lots of files
funny thing that you posted this bc I just built my own version of it last week haha! I am the assistant greenhouse manager for Penn state and they throw out sooo many extra parts that I wanted to make a whole setup with leftover waste just like this to inspire people to grow plants in a cheap and cool way. the thing i built is a old hotel caddy with a flood and drain table suspended by ratchet straps from the top metal frame so that you can level the bed regardless of the surface its resting on. my goal is to grow strawberries for anyone who comes into my office using waste fertilizer gathered from fertilizer samples that would otherwise be poured down the drain. Awesome rig and great use of 3d printer. When students ask about cool hydroponics systems I'll refer them to these videos!
will you be making a video about it? sounds like a sick setup and id love to see!
@@TechplantChannel I really want to but Im not sure what/if im allowed to post on youtube with my job. I can send you some videos on it if you have an instagram or something though. Just got it started up
@@treemanog112 I have instagram techplant.official
@@TechplantChannel awesome! Just sent you a DM
Awesome build! Thanks for sharing. That spider shelf unit is perfect for your hydroponics.
Very interesting, wish I had the extra space for something like this, will do it in the future!
I might make a mini one that just handles like 4 plants
Amazing video. Love you can move the shelf around too
can you make outdoor gardening videos? I know you live in Wisconsin so I’m talking about when the weather gets better
ive been filming outdoor stuff. right now im in the midst of a winter garlic planting guide ( waiting to harvest ) i have an onion one going too. I will tryand get some other stuff going as well
I really like the direction of the channel and the plans for patreon, not really a lot of recommendations I can give I'm just hyped for the future!
looks great matty!
thank you for the kind words, this video is flopping so this make me feel better
I really love the application. The manufacturers of the 2 in. x 3 in. x 10 ft. White Vinyl Downspout reccomend against using their products in hydroponics. NSF-61* rating is required for safe use. *Food grade or other potable water ratings could work, too 😊
very nice.
i would grow basil. i love pesto.
Nice suggestion I will get some started! Thank you!
Would love to see you do some printable stuff with Hoocho.
Nice setup. Looks pretty sturdy
He is actually the one I'm modeling the patreon off of it seems to work well for him. It will take a while for me to build it up but I have loads of un released moss poles and other cool stuff
@@TechplantChannel can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store! But yeah seeing you and hoocho doing something together would be super cool, you are both not afraid to try out new stuff, which means innovation and that is so exciting!
Great project 👍😀🇨🇦
Thank you! Cheers!
this is dope!!!!!
Really good video. Could you tell us what's going on with the great photo race? There hasn't been any updates . Thank you.
I will talk with everything plants! I have a lot of footage!
Matt that shirt is begging to be paired with darker bottoms. It's fun, but never with light wash!
I appreciate this advice, I will do this next time. Is it in general light bright shirts should go with dark pants?
@@TechplantChannel I wish there were a universal rule, but not necessarily. In this case, it’s more so about the shirt being high contrast and colorful than light in general.
Do you feel feel safe growing plants in non-food grade plastics? And, do you have any research that confirms the safety of the 3D printed parts, gutters, and pvc? (Since I assume they aren’t all the same type of plastic?)
I think about this a lot actually. as far as eating food from the 3d printed parts im not as worried because its PLA, Im sure its still toxic but from what Ive read about 3d printed parts its more of the air issues while its melting the plastic. prints are typically not food safe when it comes to like making a cup or bowl to drink from because they have tons of small cavities bacteria can chill in. but im not directly eating from it so im not to concerned.
I have done some reading around PVC and vinyl and i don't think its good for you. I will have to revisit it but I thought a bulk of the bad issues come from the sun cooking it so im hoping indoors where its like 50f it doesnt off gas or leach.
this is a good comment and i should revisit it
ive done some digging, the info is very iffy and hard to come by but the gutters are made of PVC.
www.homedepot.com/p/Amerimax-Home-Products-3-in-x-4-in-x-10-ft-White-Vinyl-Downspout-M0793/202091124?emt_ppq_vfpd
the maker answered some sorta relevant questions. so no BPA and they didnt mention them being unsafe for guiding water to the veggie garden.
also from reading, there are markings on PVC pipe that tell you if its safe ( schedule 40/nsf-61/nsf-pw ) also you should make sure your solvents are also marked like this.
im also seeing you should not heat it to bend it.
so i think its safeish.
thanks for bringing this up and if you ever find any info about this let me know. appreciate this concern so much and it helped me sorta re evaluate!
@@TechplantChannelIn am not one that gets overly concerned with “toxic plastics”. We put a lot of things in our bodies that are probably just as bad if not worse. If you feel this is a potential issue of concern. You could finish the plant in glass or another inert material and change the water daily and dilute the “toxins” from the plant. Just a thought.
@@thess518 yeah Im not overly concerned but I do like having an awareness a bit just to weigh my options, I like your end idea tho its good
Any chance you could do one for a 3x4 downspout? I could really use one this weekend, I have a 3d printer, will pay for the time/effort/STL
Do you need it by this weekend? One that size will be very filament hungry. I can try and get one whipped up I gotta find some first tho
@@TechplantChannel I ended up finding someone else's design and modifying it myself. I do like your design though, keep up the good work!
Really cool video but your wife wants her shirt back lol
lmaoooo
Curious which 3d printer have you had luck with?
im using a CR-10v3? and some ender 3 v2s. I did build a voron but im having issues with layer shifting I think the motors need more amps or they just are cheap. cuz ive ajusted alll the other stuff many times
Interesting video. But don’t complain about the condition of your plants cause it’s all of your doing. Get yourself working on the aquarium room.
Very true lol, it is my own doing, I actually have the aquarium rack all setup and I just filmed a new aquarium redo and it turned out nice. I'll he posting soon!
