  • In this video i use a plywood boat that i got for free to test poor mans fiberglass. Pmf is using wood glue and fabric to make a strong durable waterproof layer to ensure that thus boat doesnt sink! I will use this boat to show how to link up steering and how to mount a trolling motor! Thanks for watching!

    I like to use wood glue and sawdust rather than bondo. Bondo has always come loose on me after a few years. I have had great luck with glue and sawdust. I used cotton canvas painters tarps from the hardware and just white paint to do the leaky roof of my cabin cruiser. I painted the roof then laid on the cloth and painted it. it still leaked so i painted it again. and it still leaked. finally i gave it a third coat and it is so dry and has lasted a year so far. i used rustolium enamel, and what's interesting, it was lightly raining when i was doing all the painting.

      @@americanboathead5390 😆😂🤣👍 I've been looking at electric motors, does it really matter which type or lbs of thrust? There's some new ones around £100.00 to £110.00, 24 to 46 lbs of thrust but a boat with less than eight feet of water line will barely do 4 miles per hour anyway, well unless it's got a big enough engine and a planing hull. I'm thinking efficiency is probably the best route.
      When I get my shed cleared out, soon I hope, I think I'll tackle one. I haven't built a boat in thirty years, I've built three back then, three years in a row, Great memories 🙂

      I will always go for the 30lb thrust for the price, sufficient power and minn kota had been very reliable! The people I've been out with have the three blade Newport vessles brand or no name and seen problems with the control unit not working right. But they do pick up and go faster! I've never heard of a mini that goes 5mph with trolling motor and imagine I never will lol

    I am curious about the longevity of this sealant versus fiberglass. I am planning to make another pirogue in the near future and may go this route. If it lasts a few years, I would be pleasantly surprised. If it disintegrates after a couple seasons? Then I'm only out $80.

    After doing my first boat with poor mans fiberglass, I found it didn't adhere very well to the wood. After a week of fishing everyday, the cloth started pulling away from the wood and the boat leaked a little. I ended up pulling all the canvas off the boat now. It's a complete failer. I don't know if I went too fast and didn't get all the air bubbles out or didn't let it dry completely? (it was ona week before I put it in the lake) SO I'm looking for another alternative to sealing the hull to make it waterproof. I'm looing into using Coat-it by GOOP. It's supposed to be really tough using ceramic beads and Kevlar fiber in it and it has 5 star reviews, so it looks like a good option.

    • @americanboathead5390
      @americanboathead5390  Год назад

      Id suspect a couple things. Did you use the more water resistant glue such as titebond III? Did you water it down and cover the wood before fabric and layer more on top? Did you paint also? This is all for research as it doesnt help you now sadly. I think if you are going to be in the water that much, you should consider fiberglass and resin with the best paint/ coat it you can find. Sorry to hear that

    • @PainterD54
      @PainterD54 Год назад

      @@americanboathead5390 Yes, I first applied the Titebond 3 liberally to the wood, then laid the fabric down and added another coating of glue. I let that cure over night and added a second layer of glue. I may have been in a hurry and didn't get the fabric to completely stick to the wood in a few places and that's where the water got in and saturated the cloth. It pealed off like a wet blanket. I'm in the middle of sanding everything off and re-coating the entire bottom with Coat It by GOOP (Goop has great products) and hopping that will be my answer.

  • @biggiebird6887
    @biggiebird6887 9 месяцев назад

    Everything I’ve read and watched says that titebond 3 doesn’t bond to titebond 3 when it’s dried.. but it appears it does after watching your video? When you did the corner hole patch the top layer looked pretty dry.. would you say it sticks to itself? I’m doing my diy camper with this stuff.. struggling between using titebond 2 or 3..

    • @americanboathead5390
      @americanboathead5390  9 месяцев назад

      Well i went with III due to water proofness claims. Maybe it has a waxy finnish and thats why it does stick to dried glue? I dont know. I feel like a good sanding helps. I havent had issue but with a trailer that bounces, factors are different. Maybe where it needs patching, spray a primer on first? I wish i was more help..

      Your are correct about that! The difference is that this glue method is much simpler and easier. There's no stringy fiberglass mesh, no sense of urgency due to cure time, no gloves even needed, non toxic easy water clean up and more. I prefer epoxy myself but many people find it to turn into a hot sticky mess and swear to never try again. Lol. This glue method is easier than switching to gieco for home and auto insurance! Try it out and see what you think!
