I think it's admirable that you put this much effort into your videos for free. Not to mention the lenghts of most of them. Just makes me not regret that I subbed.
We can't post links in the comments section, but if you look at the description, go to the link that says "Game Sack Episode Guide" and then you'll see a small graphics at the top of that page linking you directly to the store.
After Burner has one of the most legendary soundtracks of all time, much like most of SEGA's earlier arcade games. I suck at it, but I absolutely love After Burner.
@crapperstick Definitely a fan of Phantasy Star but that's one of those games (series, actually) that would take a long time to play through to grab footage..
Just learned about After Burner Climax after watching this video. Sadly it looks like PS3 and 360 ports were removed just last month. Damn, well at least the 3DS After Burner II will keep me entertained. I put After Burner on the back burner over 20 years and coming back to the 3DS version is a good way to come back to the series.
I just recently got a PS3 to round out my collection and I'm in the same boat. I also can't get the EA version of Tetris, darn it! I still put them on my wishlist on the PS Store, just so I can stare at their game pages every few weeks. I can only assume the aircraft licensing expired. From what I gather (okay, just from reading Wikipedia), the game has three different planes from three manufacturers - Boeing, Grumman, and McDonnell Douglas.
After Burner on SMS was definitely 4 "megabit", if you dump the ROM from the cartridge it's 512k. Really not that much space of course, but if it seemed lacking, perhaps there was dummy data in there.
After Burner on the SMS also had the FM sountrack that you can finally unlock on your Sega Genesis via the Power Base Mini FM. Highly recommend. I bet some of the memory went to that plus the spirts don't have that blocky border seen in the sprites on Space Harrrier SMS.
That would be awesome. I loved the original After Burner sit-down cab. The Climax I saw in the arcade was a simple stand-up unit for $5 a game. It was in some mall in Phoenix. I think it was called the Mills or something,
GREAT episode! You guys did an amazing job! I would love to get a Saturn and play Afterburner with the mission stick! I never knew that Afterburner on the Master System was the first console game in the U.S. to have 4 Mega power. I remember the arcade cabinet where you sat down and the seat moved-that was insane!
I remember during the late 80's watching Top Gun or Iron Eagle I and II on our new Hi-Fi Stereo VCR. Afterwards I would always pop my afterburner cart into my Master system. Those movies always pumped me up to play some afterburner. Oh the memories!
The 3DS port by M2 is my favorite. It’s arcade-perfect, the 3D effect is pretty sweet, and they actually recorded sounds from the deluxe cabinet, including everything from the fan noise, the servos that move it around, right down to the sounds of the sticks when they hit the wood. You can also set the screen to tilt when you move. It’s the closest thing to playing the actual cabinet without hunting one down that still works.
There was also a version of Afterburner on Commodore 64 by US Gold. The music was done by Jeroen Tel, a Dutch chiptune legend who did a pretty good job making 8bit versions of the tunes. He even included the lead melodies.
After Burner on master system was one of the first games I ever bought my self, Bought it second hand from a place called matchems market. It cost me £5
Looking for a copy on the Saturn I came across Afterburner released on the NES/Famicom by Tengen, and Afterburner II released on the Famicom by Sunsoft. The Sunsoft version doesn't seem to be half-bad considering the hardware limitations.
After watching almost 95% of all the Game Sack episodes (as you can see from the date this is posted) I'm not going in order, but I can say with certainty that the huge letters whener MEGA POWER pops up, never gets old. It's just too rad.
This was a great episode. After Burner made me a gamer, and I had played all of the Top Atari 2600, NES and Arcade games available to me at the time. After Burner was something else entirely that no other game could offer, and so horribly few games offer today.
I'm happy I dont ever have to see that game again. It's like your eye balls are being thrown down stairs in a bucket A JET FIGHTER DOESNT MOVE LIKE THAT WHAT THE HELL
Got a copy of the PC Engine version coming in the mail. Interesting how so many Sega arcade games made it over to the PC Engine/Turbografx when they were a competitor at the time.
@MrGamesack I recently found my sega genesis and I found out it still works. The only problem is that I only have 2 games. After burner and Shadow dancer. My question is, where can I get genesis games and where can I get cases for my game cartridges.
Climax FTW. I see someone mentioned the 360 version can be used with the Ace Combat 6 flight stick. Can the PS3 version be used with a flight stick as well? Thanks for the After Burner history lesson!
It might have been said already, but the SMS port does in fact have the voice sample "GET READY!" When you start. Perhaps they were using an emulator which didn't support the PCM channel. I've seen this a lot with TG16 emulation on RUclips missing many voices, such as the laugh when you lose a ball in Devil's Crush. In addition, Afterburner on the SMS also supports systems with synth sound chips, such as the Sega Mark III with add-on Yamaha board, or a homemade mod for the SMS. Good stuff!
To me it's so good it's out of the scale. Hardly ever you hear something that fits so well to the ambiences that the levels give, is good enough to be listened to on it's own, and has such an amazing kind of cohesion between the tracks (as every zone has a past, present and two future themes that are variations of each other). The U.S. version has it's moments, but it's "there in the background" otherwise. Go for it, it's awesome.
I might not have sat through an entire 20 minute video for a Sega game...come on I wouldn't want spend 20 minutes playing Sega game. But you two are just so charming I couldn't stop watching, and at least you mentioned Nintendo for a minute or two.
I didn't know there was an afterburner game on PSN. I might have to check that out. Good ep. Needs more violence between Joe and Vic though. The subtle verbal barbs are nice but I want to see a reverse figure four head lock followed by a flying elbow off the back of the couch.
First,NO BARREL ROLL, IT'S AN AILERON ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Second, glad you showed Black Falcon, that on is my favorite HAPPY NEW YEAR GAME SACK!(Joe and Dave)
How to play After Burner on the SMS: Get a rubber band or something that will hold the control pad either left or right. make a sandwich. eat the sandwich. I believe it was Stage 12 that you had to actually start playing but you only had to press up and/or down to finish the game.
Yeah! OutRun! That series has some great conversation pieces of both the fantastic, and the down-right horrendous. Nice ep guys; That After Burner Climax looks very pretty, so I might check it out for the eye candy.
My first video game soundtrack was Afterburner II (😳) it was a cassette 'cover tape' that UK mags sold with (and inexplicably brought with me to 🇨🇦😬). After that, I've always paid attention to what and how the music is used. I've included some game OST's amongst my favourite albums 👌
Giordan Diodato son of a bitch and here I was looking for thinking. How the hell have I not bought this game ..........now I can't ever buy it ........Well never until I get my laptop back from the fixer next week sand buy it on steam.
@hecosean Sega was the king of arcade racers. I personally love Power Drift and Radmobile. ( And of course outrun which you covered) and actually, I love almost all of them. Daytona, Manx ttt, to many to list. Would make a great episode.
Afterburner is awesome in the Arcade and console! I remember playing it in the arcade at Casa Bonita back in 1997. It was still awesome, and I drew a crowed when I played it.
After burner (not sure If its ine or 2) is at an arcade in a retro game store in my town. I wanna beat it so bad. Its so fun. The controller is crazy cool.
Gotta say, I love this show, but this episode (I think it was this one) said something that could be really polarizing, if it were true, but its not. Xbox 360 software, like XBLA games, DLC and such, are 'connected' two ways, by the account, and the system it was first downloaded to. If the game was moved to a different 360, then you have to be online to play. You can migrate to a new system by going to the xbox website Then you can play offline again.
Yeah After Burner Climax is freakin sweet. I geek out when playing that game. Break out the Ace Combat 6 flight stick and use the 360's custom soundtrack option to play Highway to the Danger Zone.
AB Climax is a very highly rated game and one of the best PSN titles. Personally I think After Burner is best played where it was meant to be played, in the arcade in a sit down cabinet. Personally I like G-LOC better but because I loved playing the 360 degree rotating cabinet. (if you can find one you gotta try it) If you are gonna do these Sega franchise I would love to see a Sega Racer Retrospective. They have had some some great ones. The Rally episode was good but Sega was the King of a
That's cool, but my concern is how beatable the game is. The SMS version allows you to continue only 3 times, and you can get a lot done in 3 continues, but the arcade allows you to continue as long as you have quarters. I had no idea there was a PS2 version i gotta check that out, how many times can you continue?
I'm not sure how many continues are in the Playstation 2 version I played it at a friend's house and never owned it myself, the Sega Genesis version however can make you invincible to breeze through the game if you have the Game Genie.
You're absolutely correct. That said, the best soundtrack belongs in Sonic CD (yes, the japanese one, which by the way is one of the best soundtracks ever done by man), and the second and third are from Android Assault and Lords of Thunder! Snatcher has One Night in Neo Kobe, which I'd encourage you to check out.
Just found a Genesis copy of After Burner 2 a few weeks ago. Guy was selling it cart only for $15 so I passed on it, good thing I did as just 4 days ago it turned up again at my favourite local game shop complete for only $10. It was okay but I prefer the PC-Engine version more.
one sega fan & one nintendo fan....there is some banter but i appreciate how opinions are kept to more of a 50-50 & see both sides of the coin so that the fanboy thing isn't too obvious lol....also love the wide & varied retro stuff is looked at aside from the mainstream sega/nintendo stuff. Thank you MrGameSack :)
I think you guys should've shown the main appeal for playing these games, the arcade machines! The original Afterburner arcade was a 360 degree spiraling monster! You jumped into the cockpit and it was really fun to play. Afterburner Climax also had a cool arcade machine but not as epic as the original Afterburner. I think in future episodes you should give a bit of history on the games, the creators, and the arcade machines. It's a missed opportunity in here and the outrun episode.
seriously, did an afterburner cabinet murder Dave's family or what
Youre telling me that you dont know about the fact that an afterburner machine killed over 200 people
It was Kung Fury that finally stopped it.
The 80s were a time of excess. People wasted Mega Power like it grew on trees.
I think it was all the cocaine. People just went crazy with Mega Power without thinking about the consequences.
I remember playing After Burner Climax in an arcade, it even had the moving cabinet and everything, it was amazing!
too bad i didnt see it anymore in my arcade
+Airod The Dragon Same here buddy. Played it only one time and I'm already in love with it. Just as good as the original After Burner in my opinion
Same it was amazing
it's like you just imagined yourself in top gun
RUclips brought back sorting videos by oldest. And I always like to see these videos. Amazing back then and today! Love this channel so much
Glad you enjoy. And we're glad to have a subscriber who actually notices and corrects their typos. :)
I think it's admirable that you put this much effort into your videos for free. Not to mention the lenghts of most of them. Just makes me not regret that I subbed.
Game Sack please make a Space Harrier episode!!
my life in gaming did an episode on that
featuring game sack
Joe stole a game from them. It was funny.
I Love the F-14 Tomcat.
TOP GUN BABY!!!!!
We can't post links in the comments section, but if you look at the description, go to the link that says "Game Sack Episode Guide" and then you'll see a small graphics at the top of that page linking you directly to the store.
@Heroelime Happy New Year! Thanks for watching!!!
After Burner has one of the most legendary soundtracks of all time, much like most of SEGA's earlier arcade games. I suck at it, but I absolutely love After Burner.
Yeah we showed it in this episode. :)
@crapperstick Definitely a fan of Phantasy Star but that's one of those games (series, actually) that would take a long time to play through to grab footage..
One of my favourite episodes of Game Sack.

What nooo and i wanted to buy the ps3 version
you can buy it on android as well. its the full after burner climax i think and its pretty cool
+igotyou62 and its removed too
I just recently got a PS3 to round out my collection and I'm in the same boat.
After Burner II got ported to the 3DS!!
I have the game in the 2DS and it's awesome!
I have that game on the 3DS XL. Did you know that you can unlocked Special Mode by beating the game?
It’s arcade perfect
I have it and am thinking about buying thunder blade
Climaxing looks like fun.
This was very well researched and informative! Thanks boyos!
Happy New Year!

Love Dave in this one - da club reference & female flight suit
love the little bits and the end of your videos, keep it up.

I had never even heard of After Burner until a version of the theme tune appeared in Bayonetta :D

I laughed so hard at the Game Chasers spoof at the end where it said "stolen" for the price paid
i always lol at the sound of the sack hitting the ground when it starts.
After Burner on master system was one of the first games I ever bought my self, Bought it second hand from a place called matchems market. It cost me £5

oh my god, that face when joe is playing with the joystick, lol
@Aku540 Shadow Dancer is awesome. Anyway, you can try Craigslist, eBay or people on forums like sega-16.com for many of your Genesis needs.
@MrGamesack I recently found my sega genesis and I found out it still works. The only problem is that I only have 2 games. After burner and Shadow dancer. My question is, where can I get genesis games and where can I get cases for my game cartridges.

I hear that 20th anniversary Super Hang On arranged track playing, incredibly good taste. :)
Afterburner Climax has been one of the few arcade games i have played in an arcade. Its so awesome :D

(For people in Britain) if you know thorpe park there is a after burner climax arcade machine in the arcade area also there is seta rally championship
Wow. That TG16 port looks great. I loved After Burner on 32X.
I might not have sat through an entire 20 minute video for a Sega game...come on I wouldn't want spend 20 minutes playing Sega game. But you two are just so charming I couldn't stop watching, and at least you mentioned Nintendo for a minute or two.
Ordered my 32x copy yesterday. Can't wait to take place in the Cockpit after 23 years or so :)
I didn't know there was an afterburner game on PSN. I might have to check that out. Good ep. Needs more violence between Joe and Vic though. The subtle verbal barbs are nice but I want to see a reverse figure four head lock followed by a flying elbow off the back of the couch.
The Sega CD has some of the best music out there...Terminator, Sol Feace, Lunar etc...
I heard that music quite a few years ago (AB2 version) but I didn't know it was from After Burner!
did youtube not used to show 60 fps? crazy
Yeah back then it was 30fps max.
First,NO BARREL ROLL, IT'S AN AILERON ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Second, glad you showed Black Falcon, that on is my favorite
HAPPY NEW YEAR GAME SACK!(Joe and Dave)
Didnt learn too much about Afterburner, but now i have Broken Wings stuck in my head.
How to play After Burner on the SMS: Get a rubber band or something that will hold the control pad either left or right. make a sandwich. eat the sandwich. I believe it was Stage 12 that you had to actually start playing but you only had to press up and/or down to finish the game.
Yeah that trick of flying at an angle stops working at stage 12.
Retro Gameing Guitarist yup. and here we are almost 30 years later and people bitch and complain about DLC on disc and 1080p vs 900p.
Mickael Joseph Yup.
yeah I remember something like that. It doesn't work against bosses though if I remember correctly. Been years since I played it on the SMS.
The Sega rally machine moves when you turn
I had fun as a kid with the Amiga version, which was close to arcade version if I remember rightly?
Yeah! OutRun! That series has some great conversation pieces of both the fantastic, and the down-right horrendous.
Nice ep guys; That After Burner Climax looks very pretty, so I might check it out for the eye candy.

The memory size of the particular game. 4 mega power = 4 megabits of memory or 512k. Amazing!
i am not sure but is this game that john connor was playing on T2 during the scene on the galleria?
Would you like to see an Ace Combat meets After Burner game?
you mean assault horizon???
I love Afterburner especially the spiritual successor Sky Target on Sega Saturn.
I love this channel man, best on YT keep going Dave and Joe!
You guys crack me up. These videos are the impossible... perfect. : )
@tetrisdave Thanks YOU for making a episode about After burner, and making 37 episodes!
I bought Climax when it came out on XBLA but never got around to playing it. I think I'll give it a go this weekend! Thanks guys.
Farhan Jiwani sadly it's been taken off XBLA
I might have it on my hdd still. Giordan Diodato
Giordan Diodato I checked last night and it's there :) I just have to be connected to XBL to play :(
Farhan Jiwani ouch
Giordan Diodato son of a bitch and here I was looking for thinking. How the hell have I not bought this game ..........now I can't ever buy it ........Well never until I get my laptop back from the fixer next week sand buy it on steam.
Good episode! May I suggest a look at the incredible Shinobi series?
Wait... Joe Redifer? From OverClocked ReMix? I was wondering what happened to that guy!
there is an hd version that many people know for playstation network and xbox live arcade.
Easily the most underrated game at Time Out
Are the arcade versions in this video emulated?
This and the Out Run episode are my favourites
@hecosean Sega was the king of arcade racers. I personally love Power Drift and Radmobile. ( And of course outrun which you covered) and actually, I love almost all of them. Daytona, Manx ttt, to many to list. Would make a great episode.
Thanks. I'll correct it. Not sure how I missed that. :)
Afterburner is awesome in the Arcade and console! I remember playing it in the arcade at Casa Bonita back in 1997. It was still awesome, and I drew a crowed when I played it.
I think you can hear the after burner theme on the motorcycle stage in Bayonetta.
After burner (not sure If its ine or 2) is at an arcade in a retro game store in my town. I wanna beat it so bad. Its so fun. The controller is crazy cool.
Did they play this game in Terminator 2?
I think there had the mobile version of After Burner II too.
Gotta say, I love this show, but this episode (I think it was this one) said something that could be really polarizing, if it were true, but its not. Hey Joe, can you beat After Burner on the Sega Master System? 'Cause really, I dunno, I can't.
Drames Thonovan I don't know if I've ever finished that version. I may have. But yeah it's crazy tough in the upper levels.
+Victoria vigeick I guess Galaxy force is pretty similar, but the console ports are all pretty terrible.
The Sega Saturn is pretty close but pixel for pixel the Playstation 2 version is king.
Good job. Afterburner is great. I played Climax on the arcade. More of the same pretty much, but it was good to me.
Seeing this, i really don't know why i liked it those days. Maybe i was blind. The arcade was a cool machine though.
the opening dialogue is incredible
dude I played this in an arcade that was for children the place was called major magics and it was a sit down and rock kind of cabinet
You should've included a look at the stage in Bayonetta that plays homage to After Burner!
So how much does a Lindbergh cost with Climax? I still gotta play that game and I want to play it so much!
You're absolutely correct.
That said, the best soundtrack belongs in Sonic CD (yes, the japanese one, which by the way is one of the best soundtracks ever done by man), and the second and third are from Android Assault and Lords of Thunder!

I remember owning a controller especially designed for Afterburner on my 32X. Has anyone an idea what it was?
Just found a Genesis copy of After Burner 2 a few weeks ago. Guy was selling it cart only for $15 so I passed on it, good thing I did as just 4 days ago it turned up again at my favourite local game shop complete for only $10. It was okay but I prefer the PC-Engine version more.

AB2 Music booming from your local seafront arcade. The feels Man the Feels...…
