Here we go... we lost our family dog 5 days ago, he was a german sheppard 15 years old, only for the last 6 months that he really started decaying, couldnt walk and go to the bathroom by himself and we spent a lot of time, effort and money making him as comfortable as he could be. We thought about euthanizing, many times, but he just seemed to want to live. We bought him a wheelchair and he was super happy walking on that thing until the very end, he died of a heartattack on my mother in law's lap, surrounded by his family.

I lost me dog 4yrs ago now and I still cry. She had a tumor that wasn’t an issue for years and then all of a sudden it grew. Unfortunately we couldn’t deal with it because she had arrhythmia and blood issues and the vet said she could die if he put her under. So I didn’t have it operated on. One day many years later it broke through her skin and that is when I had to put her down. Worst day ever, I cried for days. And then a year later my mom’s dog started to go downhill. He just started decaying and getting worse so we put an end to his suffering. Again we were distraught. Bawling for days. Both of them were just the perfect dogs so well behaved and we still miss them.

I had to euthanize my dog 2 days before Christmas. I had adopted him from the animal shelter last January. They guessed he was 4 so I thought I'd have another 4 (he was a Great Dane). The vet told me he had kidney failure and he had a month. I probably should have done it right then but I couldnt believe it. I feel I made him suffer because I couldn't face it and I hoped I could somehow nurse him back to health.
I called about in home euthanasia and they said they could come but couldn't remove his body afterwards. We had to take him to the animal shelter (not the same one) and they were exceptionally kind and gentle to him and to us. He went with them without a backward look, while we sobbed.
I guess I cant be part of the pod anymore because he's gone and I can't face getting another dog.
But Joel you made me a better owner in the 10 months I had him, and it helps me to know his life got better because of what I learned. (But the "Go/Get" method is tough with a Great Dane lol. I had to get his leash and pretend we were going for a walk and then take him where I wanted him to be. He would always get up for a walk).
    He was the "best boy".
I also wanted to say I think whoever had him first were good to him. He had no bad habits, was gentle and funny and loving. I dont know why he ended up in the shelter but I got the feeling his previous owners loved him. And they must have had a truck. He always wanted to jump in trucks.💔

On Joel's early comments about narcissism creeping in - that whole thing. "Power corrupts...." and influence or status (In other people's eyes) corrupts and having more money than others corrupts ... AND the corrupting process is slow, sneaky, virtually invisible to the person it is working in. I had status and a form of 'power' and then it was all just GONE ... best thing that ever happened to me. As I got distance from that time, that version of me, I was increasingly embarrassed then mortified then horrified as I became able to SEE how much ego and pride I had the longer I had that power and status. AND I was entirely blind to it. Yikes.

College and University teaches a lot more than just what they're going there for academically. It teaches kids how to think "outside the box" and it teaches them how to grow up and live on their own, especially if you send them away so they don't live at home. I am so thankful I did that with both my children because they are a success today because of that - one is a lawyer and the other one just graduated from Cyber Security and I'm a single Mom.

It used to, to some extent, but it definitely does not anymore. Critical thinking is not taught anywhere in any institution at this point in time. It certainly gives kids an opportunity to experiment with being adults with fewer consequences away from their parents.

My 3 year old working line German shepherd is very reactive, I have seriously considered putting her down and have tried rehome to no avail, but fortunately I have received allot of help in improving her behaviour, some for money and others for free.
I have been very blessed by the working dog community and I think she is going to shape up to be a very good dog in about a year (I would’ve made progress faster if I had more knowledge and experience)
Conditioning her to a muzzle and taking a balanced approach to training has worked wonders with her and things will only get better.
    It’s been quite a ride 😂😂

We had a Golden Retriever, thick wooly hair. A grass seed got into her skin and caused an abcess in her neck.
She scratched at it like crazy and tore her skin.
Took her to the vet who said the wound was so ragged it would keep reinfecting and the dog would die of sepsis.
I was ready to say goodbye to her there and then. But my partner refused and we took her home.
Six weeks later she was right as rain! Fully recovered.
Sometimes animals do know the best thing to do with woulds. She instinctively knew the infection needed lancing so it could heel.
Healing wounds tend to itch and enabling them to drain and dryout appears to be how they heal.

Unsolicited advice to everyone, related to the conversation about Eric's grandma. Please, please talk to your adult children about your wishes (DNR, DNI, medical procedures, treatments, etc..). Also talk to your parents and siblings about their wishes. Also appoint a healthcare proxy. I know it's uncomfortable talking about death, but it is necessary. So many people don't know what their loved ones want, which leads to the suffering of everyone involved. It is hard to make someone suffering a DNR or comfort care, but if you know what their wishes were, it takes away some of the guilt.

Yes! Ten years ago my grandpa had multiple massive strokes. The ventilator was keeping him alive, but there was no brain activity and no hope for any kind of recovery. My dad works in healthcare and has cared for many patients in the end stages of their life. He knew his dad would *hate* to stick around in that state, reliant upon machines and mentally already gone.
Some of his siblings still resent him for making the decision to disconnect life support. I hope my family makes the exact same decision for me when my time comes.

I had someone in a Facebook group try to rehome a Husky. They were having a baby and lived in a small apartment and decided they would not be able to give the appropriate care for the dog. I supported their decision and because of that I had people attacking my business. People who I have never met or worked with before were claiming I abuse the animals I work with, I talk poorly about shelter dogs, I spread misinformation when dog's lives are at risk, etc. FB wouldn't take these reviews down so I put it in the public domain and my hundreds of clients took care of the issue on my behalf. Thank god for that. I could have gone out of business because people wanted to virtue signal when the most activism they do is post memes to random pet groups.
Regarding euthanasian, what gets to me is when people rather kill a dog than use any form of punishment.

Looking forward to more info about the coaching program. I want to get into dog training but I feel like I am more of a Hermione when it comes to that topic. (book smart but not much practical experience).
Questions for the podcast: Joel, if someone asked you to train a sled dog, would you do it? How would you do it? and how would it be different if you had one dog vs a whole team of dogs that needed training?
Do you think a sled dog can loose leash walk?
Have you ever heard of Bikjoring? Thoughts on that?

So I've come back to this ep. I have an 18month gsp. She will 100% point a fly/leaf/anything. From my experience of my girl the most challenging characteristic for me is that she is comfortable to be at a distance from you - 100m- 200m more. If you just want a dog to hike with this is very unnerving in comparison to my boxer who just passed. He would stay relatively close which is much easier to manage in terms of other animals, people etc. Engagement and solid recall is key and hard to build up as they are hunting machines, following their noses etc. They def mature late but love to work so if you actually like training your dog you will always have a willing friend to train with. She is also the perfect canicross dog, this helps with the distance issue, I can just chill knowing we're attached to each other. Hideous puppyhood (jumpy, bitey) and endless training for me but well worth the effort now. Keep it up you guys 🙂

The meme was needed to lighten the mood. I appreciate the chat before getting into the pod topic. I know it's the best option for many, but I felt so guilty putting down my dog last year. I really hoped he would go naturally. From diagnosis to end was only 2 months. He had a rare leukemia that the Dr said didn't respond to treatment. After 2 months he began to deteriorate so very quickly over 2 days. 24 hours after losing control of his bowels the seizures began and I couldn't wait for the inevitable. We had a doctor come to the house. He was only 11. I buried him in the backyard under his favorite tree, with his favorite toy, and all his remaining treats.

I heard some people change perspectives about life/death when they get older or their situation changes (a bit like Joel’s plans to not baby-sit . . .). A thought worth considering - there is intrinsic value (philosophical sense) in human-human interaction, regardless of illness or it’s severity. There is also ‘value’ in a being feeling happy, comfortable, secure with some sense of worth, regardless of whether they remember the moments they feel that way. Here’s a dog-related question: what is dog aggression by definition? It obviously has negative connotations & carries the risk of escalating, but what’s the line between dogs naturally correcting each other & ‘aggression’? E,g - Joel relies on some ‘aggression’ from Prince to correct other dogs. Love to know your thoughts. And thanks for another enlightening podcast 😁.

1:03:01 both of you are right. Except when you go back to Henry Ford and all of the other tycoons, they wanted to make workers just smart enough to get the job done but not be leaders. You can see in the military that there are some people that do need to be led and other people that may not be officers, but are born natural leaders. it’s when this balance gets disrupted bad things happen. that’s where the phrase, lead follow, or get out-of-the-way came from!

My dog is 14 has congestive heart failure. On Dec 3rd she was brought in just for a senior checkup and she was a bit depressed at the time then too and they could hear a level 3/4 heart murmur. I got her on pain meds for her arthritis and she seemed better for about 2 weeks, the vet just told me to monitor her for signs that her heart was getting worse. She seemed fine. Then on Jan 6th she started having syncope events. She had 5 in 1 day and we took her to her regular vet and then to the pet ER. We spent about $3500 to get her taken care of. She is on meds that manage her condition but she doesnt seem happy anymore. She just lays in bed and flinches at my 2 year old daughter and pees herself all day long no matter how often I take her outside because her meds are diuretics and she can't control it. She was super skinny when she got back from the hospital, in Dec the vet said I should try to put more weight on her because she was already pretty thin, but she has chronic pancreatitus issues so I was nervous to increase her food. I increased her food and now she is having diarrhea and vomiting (not terribly, but still. It's just one more thing that she has to deal with). I'm at my wits end. Im also pregna t and the stress is destroying me. I just cry when I sit with her. I've had her for 14 years and she's been with me through everything. I dont know when to call it.

my dog had to get neutered in order to fly to peru with me to move there. he is also off kibble and only has raw patties and fresh human grade food. we still use flea meds because those things run rampent here. he has to go to a groomer though because i cant cut hair lol. when traveling you would be surprised as to what the requirements are just to leave one country and enter another. here i sadly see a lot of bad dog trainers and dog walkers that give me (a dog walker from the states) a bad name. a lot of walkers walk dogs from many different homes at once so the risk of a fight is very real. some will even visit dog parks which is something that was always risky with my own dog (he is good at them but still) let alone with other peoples dogs.

For Eric: it would be great if there were apprenticeships / mentorships for people like your daughter. One of the reasons for higher education was supposed to be so you didnt have to spend years learning from the school of hard knocks, reinventing the wheel. But yes, your intelligence is different from your education. You can read and teach yourself, like the example you said. Personally, I think having one's own business is the way to go. It didnt used to be. My dad advised us against it because of the highs and lows of income, the fact you're always on call to the job, etc. Back then working with your brain instead of your body jobs offered benefits that made life better. But most of those are gone now and tech means we're all always on call.

I've not looked deep enough into it yet as I dont think the main base is local to us, and we are in pre-kid stages so not much sense in looking deeper. BUT- there is a growing movement for better education / teaching kids to be entrepreneurs or at least more independent than "factory worker" that the public school system was designed to spit out.

I dont know exactly what I'm gonna do but he aint gonna burn in a barrel with horses and other dead animals. Ill either be the worst customer the cremation place has ever had and they do it solo or hes going in the yard.
The whole thing about people rehoming due to this.or.that has too many angles. My dog was a huge PITA when he was young, most people would have probably given up on him. I didnt. i put in the work, much less now because i didnt give up, stayed consistent and now have a very good dog. Ill ultimately make the decision when I have to but it will be for his benefit not my wants and needs when yhat time comes.
Lastly, if you rehome a dog solely because you cant afford it you probably got it for the wrong reasons and should've never got one in the first place. But then there are homeless people with perfectly happy dpgs treated better than some dogs with homes so wtf do i know?

In Canada, if you have your family approving and you get doctors to approve as well, you can actually legally end your life. I'm not sure if there's legal implications that have to be signed/documented and I believe that doctors have to fully consent that there's nothing more that can be done and that you are in a situation where life is unbearable but if you have that kind of consent it can be done. Both my Uncle and Aunt arranged to die together because she had diabetes and was already blind and had lost one foot, and he had terminal liver cancer. She could not live without him looking after her and she did not want to be a burden to her children so they were able to legally end their lives together.

My lovely Maggie (springer spaniel) had a sudden onset of gastroenteritis at 11 years and 7 months old and went downhill very quickly within the best parts of 9-10 hours (we had her in the emergency overnight vet within half an hour of her symptoms starting). They put her on a cocktail of medication to ease her suffering and I agreed to a blood transfusion in the early hours of the morning when they said she was loosing too much blood. Within about an hour of her having the blood transfusion she went into cardiac arrest and they resuscitated her. She went on to have 2 more cardiac arrests and I was at the vets at the time this was happening. We had to discuss euthanasia and still I couldn't accept putting my dog down. She was on a ventilator at this point also. Eventually I agreed and just as I agreed, she went into cardiac arrest again and the vet took verbal consent and quickly they euthanised her. I cannot imagine the suffering she endured that night and I still don't know if I made the right decision to euthanize one year on. It literally haunts me at night. I don't think I'll ever come to terms with it tbh. It feels like I forced her to give up whilst she was fighting so hard to come back.

Oregon has Right to Die laws. But a person has to give their own consent to their doctor assisted death and a person with dementia can't give consent. And a person has to be within 6 months--I think-- of dying from their ailment. In Oregon at least if a person spends all their money on long term care and Medicaid then pays for it, after they die the State will take their home and selll it (put a lien on it rather) to get their money back. What a dilemma for your grandmother and her family!! I hope if that happened to me I would check myself out while I still could before causing my family and myself such suffering.

College as it is now (not what we *think* it is, not what it *was*, not what it's *supposed to be*) is largely a huge waste of time and money, unless you are going into something that needs a degree and will pay enough for you to pay off the loans. Trades are a way better way to go now.
I also agree with Joel, I don't think kids need to go to school. They don't learn there, most teachers are terrible. Just replace them with the internet, like the hole in the wall experiment in India. I do agree with Eric that it's best to have minimum requirements, but I also don't think the government should be in charge of setting or enforcing those standards, because the vast majority of people in government are idiots. Look at what government schools are now. I mean, really look. It's not good.

Dogs bite for three reasons. Territory, food and fear. Yes, there are occasions when the dog may have something wrong with them. Most likely due to the breeding. Also, be aware of some no kill shelters in Texas. If the dog has something like heartworms or they feel the dog is unadoptable they will send the dog somewhere else to be put down. If a dog bites you need to look at the entire situation to try and figure out why before just believing the dog is fisuous. The dog that will mostly bite is the chicwaua. But they are not news worthy. However, when a Pitt bites they are a strong powerful dogs so of course they make the news. But what about the Pitt that has saved a family member. What about the Pitt who stopped an intruder to protect him family. What about the Pitt that jumped in front of a snake so his toddler human wouldn't get bit. By doing so the pitt got bit and lost his leg. Why are those stories not news worthy. I have a dog who is half Pitt and the smartest and most loveable dog I have ever had. I have had 22 dogs in my life, and euthanizing your pet is not as easy as it sounds. Yes, it is a selflist gift but it is hard❤

The word "human" is an evolutionary classification of man. It's derived by secular humanists and it lends to the fairytale that we are nothing more than evolved bessts and not man made in the image of God. Macro Evolution is the idea that one kind of creature can become a completely different kind of creature through random mutations over billions of years. Not only has that NEVER been observed, but it is in direct conflict with the laws of physics and all observational evidences in all of the sciences. We only observe environmental adaptation of creatures within the kind of creature they already are. That has been called micro evolution, but to randomly mutate to a completely different kind of creature is not possible. Beside the fact that all we ever observe in the field of gentic research is the loss of information and never observe new information appearing. Genetic mutations also only lead to a lesser form of a kind of creature and never produce a superior form .
As you begin to critically examine information, you'll begin to see a much larger agenda to keep people in deception

Youre thinking wrong about evolution. First off, mutation alone is not the only method, and its not random mutation either. Its selective genetic mutation, the selection being by other life, or nature itself (not that nature is thinking of it, but its survival "bias" [as a different term that its normally used] ) Evolution is a slow process when left to its own devices. Your argument that we "dont observe new information" is false, because if we observe changed information, that IS NEW information. New combinations of the same genetic code can be new things. The alphabet consists of 26 letters, and we have words that are combinations of those letters. A New combination of letters is a new word, not a new alphabet. But it not being a new alphabet doesnt mean you cannot create new words. Also, while we only observe the changes within the "kind of creature they are", this is a bit of a misnomer because we classified them based on those differences that were changed. Us not seeing a "change" of species is just a naming problem, as we would just come up with a NEW name of the species we saw, we wouldnt say its this old species, but different. This is a flaw, likely, in the "tracking" of species changes.. And while no, you wont have a frog become a human on tuesday, given 50 billion years, its ancestors could. Here is a thought, why do mammals have so much in common? Magic? Why do you have similar organs to a deer. You have blood, bone, ligaments, eyes, ears, nose, teeth, tongue, etc etc.. Thats not magic, its not design, its that life has to come from something to something. And we have common ancestors, without a doubt. Natural selection speeds up the evolutionary process, as does now genetic manipulation.

Intelligent design is how you get an airplane, not a person. Honestly if you believe you were created, then please only explain why we have fish eyes designed specifically to see under water, yet are land animals? If God exists, he's probably pissed about how he created something so ignorant and stupid.

Also, the "it hasnt been observed what happens over a billion years" as if that has to be observed DIRECTLY is disingenuous considering humans lifetimes. That micro-evolution, that you admit exists, is what macro-evolution works off of. Many micro-changes, become over time, simply become big changes over enough time. Especially billions of years, vs a human lifetime of 100.

Tampa Florida, I’m not “off the grid” (wish I was lol) Off Grid Dogs refers to getting our dogs off “The Grid,” out of “The Matrix” and escaping the clutches of The Pet Industrial Complex. So avoiding things like neutering, kibble, bad dog training advice like not correcting your dog, flea and tick medicine, buying dogs from puppy mills etc etc. So get ready Grandpa!
