Scotty Kilmer need information on a F-150 4 by 4 how to replace the front hub left side
I’m trying to find the metrics for how hard to fasten my front wheel bearings bolts. It for a Mazda mx5 nb(fl) 2005 1,8 sport?
What is the size of the socket wrench used in removing the drive shaft nut?
Scotty Kilmer what was the tool you used for the bearing again please do you have a part number of any sort??!!
Thanks for letting us know the names of the tools to complete the job cause that's important. If i drive 20mph then press on the brakes it feels like the front driver side wheel shakes and wobbles. If i drive 30mph it wobbles even worse. The faster i drive then press on the brakes the more the wheel wobbles and shakes. But i wonder why, what could that be ???
That's how to make a video, fast pace and no fuckin around.
+Bus Driver Uppercut me to
Pop Sheen i Totally agree.
I agree! Fantastic video! Perfect mechanic tips too!
It’s videos like this that really shows off his experience.
*show
@@malvolio01 Meh, dialect difference. In my region, we use "shows".
@@RikuIshmaru videos show video shows. It's just plain wrong man sorry lol. If the subject was "this" you'd be right.
Scooty makes it look so easy and simple. I bet that if i did it, it would take me half a day, at least!😅
I'm thinking he took it apart and put it back together off camera so that it would be quicker when he filmed. I have never worked on a car and had things come apart so easily.
try a week
Would have been even easier if he would have changed the entire assembly like he usually does. I spend most of the the time either looking for the right tool or fighting with one stubborn bolt that decides it doesn't want to come off. I changed my CV axle last week and it went much smoother than i thought. But i found out i now have to change the wheel barrings also.
If I did it, I would lose three bolts and have an extra one left over when I was done reassembling the wheel.
@@lezlethal That's why I did my axles and wheel bearing/hub assemblies at the same time. Might as well while its separated.
Damn dude... you are a breath of fresh mechanic'n air. Short, sweet and to the point.
I use to do a TV gig on CBS and won it then for interactive car talk host. This is MUCH better on youtube, I can say what I want and not be stopped by pencil necked executives who are afraid of offending advertisers
Great video, Scotty. I do appreciate the fact that you spend a considerable amount of time prepping the vehicle so that you don't waste our time. A perfect blend of treating your viewers as if they have some idea, and just running them through the basic steps to give them the necessary insight to tackle basic maintenance. Have you considered showing the necessary tools before starting the video?
Tools over a thousand dollars. Then brings out a bold with some washers lol
Thanks Scotty...... Your one hell of a guy to share such a wealth of information. There are not many professional mechanics that would be so generous with their knowledge.
Damn dude! You got some good videos, no BS no extra talk, no wasted time!! Love it!
THIS GUY IS FLIPPING AMAZING ,,ABOUT AS HELPFUL AS YA CAN BE WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING THE JOB FOR YA ,,THE WORLD NEEDS MORE GUYS LIKE THIS ,, AWESOME
& $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ cash
Why the fuck did I go to community college to learn to be a mechanic when I could have just watched this guy!?
because when you got thru replacing that wheel bearing, YOU still had the noise!!!!!!!!!!!! do you suppose it may have been on the transmission side!!!! EMOGENE THAT!!!!!!!!
I started following your channel in 2019. Then I searched for how to replace wheel bearings and came upon this. Men, if it wasn't for the voice, I wouldn't be convinced it's the same person. What a difference 10 years can make.
OMG a young Scotty!!! All love and respect from philippines 🇵🇭
Dude, I love your videos, simple, to the point, concise, and for the most part very complete. Thank you for taking the time to put them together and make it available for shady tree boys like me.
I wonder if self-driving cars will drive themselves to the car wash and mechinics? Every three months you see your car dive away and come back with the tires rotated, the oil changed, and all clean.
Or if your car is three months over due for payments. To car just drive back to the car lot.
That would piss me off
I laughed way too hard at this 😂😂
Car drives away while you are shopping, come back. Dude where my car?
I think we'll hit a point where most ppl don't own cars. And companies like uber will have monthly subscription packages and you'll simply summon a car.
😂🤣 That'd be incredible. It'd have to alert your phone, link up with the shop for appointment times, and set up a time that works with you.
Alternatively it just fucks off without you 😂 Maybe the Cloud lets you borrow another self-driving car for a day to compensate.
Wow never knew I would run into some vintage Scotty while refreshing up on a front wheel bearing job, kinda made my day thanks Scotty!
just changed the wheel bearing in my girlfriends toyota yaris thanks to your video, used a different method to get the old bearing out, because i dont have the expert tools, so put a small lump hammer on the bearing and hit the lump hammer with a normal hammer and then used a flat wide chisel, the old bearing and the small lump hammer to tap the new bearing in place, dont think i would of done it though without this video, so thanks and keep on making these videos
I'd definitely check the wheel bearing on the right hand side. If it's the brakes making that noise, it will be completely obvious when you remove the wheel, so certainly check that out. The wheel bearing is inside a sealed hub, so you can't see them when they go bad. And as old as that thing is, odds are it has gone bad. Scotty Kilmer
@MightyJustas Yes, pressing the bearing in and out of the hub assembly is the only hard part, as I show in the video. Scotty
every piece is already itch in the mind of a mechanic with such a wide and long years of experience. thanks pal for sharing a lot of your knowledge. regards.
Me and my brother managed to remove the front wheel bearing by putting a socket onto the bearing and hammer it out (took a while, but it works), and then put the new one back in by hammering it down evenly with a plank in-between so the bearing wouldn't be damaged. Great tip for us mechs without a thousand bucks to buy a bearing removal tool!
You saved me $thousands of dollars by me watching all your videos
@EAWitkowski wheel bearings roar as they wear, louder the faster you go. I would assume a different suspension problem, but it's going to be hard to figure out until it gets worse. But a really good front end man may be able to figure it out with his equipment, most give free estimates. If you're near houston, cotton brothers front end can always figure it out.
First time watching one of your videos and man... I love it. Fast paced and pointed out exactly everything that needed to be pointed out. No lolly-gagging around like others do in their videos. Love it.
Scottie, you're a legend. I'm 12 years too late to this video.
another tip is to put the new bearing in the freezer while you're getting the old one out. that will "shrink" it and help it press in easier.
s30kidd cold expands😐
David Koon are you serious?
go stand in the corner and think about what you just said...
David Koon Why do hot air balloons expand when you inflate them with HOT AIR?
shoot couldn't tell yeah probably the gas emissions coming off the heat. but I do know I had a block of dry ice and I later it on a metal counter top and left it for about an hour and the counter top when I returned was about 10 inches larger than the wood frame. and I removed it and about 3 hours later it fit like it never happened again.
@LuchoLuchan yes, the tool is universal for most cars. Without power tools if's very hard to do this, and most guys normally use a machine press to press the bearings out and in. As for sizes, heck, even I don't remember any of that stuff, I just grab an assortment of sockets and see which one fits. no one really stores such information in books or online. Scotty
Can't belive he really would answer questions for free what a MAN thank you for your service
On deck, the change out of the front wheel bearing / hub assembly on my 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe (Front Wheel Drive). After watching your video, I think the tie rod removing tool insight will be the difference between success and busted knuckles. Thanks and good luck to me.
very good!
Thats record time. It takes me an hr lol
yeah ...because he has that hydraulic wrench bolt remover thingy, whereas 99.9 percent of "DIY"ers don't. :-)
most people complain I"m too fast.
Just catching a ride on the Scotty Time Machine!
Ten years ago... into the past...
Found what I needed to know.
Thanks Scotty!
MIght be a good idea for people without a super-air gun to remove the axle nut with the wheel on and the car on the ground. That way they can use a cheater pipe and plenty of torque with the tire preventing everything else from turning... and thanks for the video! Oh, and doesn't the fork tool usually ruin the boot of the tie rod or ball joint?
Thanks for tip
you didnt use a torque stick to tighten the wheels back up. NEVER tighten wheels up with an impact gun unless you are using a torque limiting extension also known as a torque stick. You can make the mistake of over tightening (warps rotors) or under tightening (wheel falling off).. Use a torque stick they are cheap and easy to use. No reason not to use them.
He does a lot of stuff off camera. He probably tightened it up with the impact and then went and torqued it afterwards.
+Taylor F. May be true. But thousands of people will see this video and follow his poor example of how to tighten a wheel back up.
dude Scotty has been a mechanic for 50 years.ive been a mechanic for 10 years and can UGA duga bolts on and put a torque wrench on and have it within a few pounds. it's all about your level of experience
Great video. The last few times I've done front wheel bearings, it was on two different Toyotas and one Hyundai. All three times it was cheaper to replace the whole knuckle with the bearings than to bother getting a shop to press the old ones out and new ones in!
Love your videos Scotty! Just got a used Hyundai Elantra and having a problem with the bearings. My buddy and I are going to atempt to fix it tomorow. Allways cool to be able to have a on hand "how to" instruction video that I can pause, stop and replay. Thank you!
do as in this video, mechanics tend to charge quite a bit for such a job.
I'd be left with a car and a bunch of parts in my hand trying to figure out what goes where.
Auto mechanics is not taught in as many schools as it use to be. So each generation know less and less about even simple things about cars. Like checking fluids and tire pressures. Cars get smarter...people get dumber.
WOW! No stumbling around No BS info! fast and to the point! Love it!!!
its odd that the newer cars were manufactured to be worked on,but ye must conform to the small size of the car builders and have a mechanical education that is always... and i mean always improving and moving forward with the latest advancements in trans.technology.......RUN IT DOWN... Thanks Scott, You are the working mans best friend and a True Texan !!! Blessings of Peace and Prosperity to you and yours
Your the man scotty
Don't you have to get a new alignment if you take tie rod out ?
+myles hartsfield No. Only if you replace the tie rod.
If you take the knuckle off the strut (as Scotty did), your camber will be way off if you don't get an alignment.
dmj7676 how will it be off if you dont mind me asking ..he didnt move/ajust anything all he did was bolt off bolt on
Not if you take record of where it was before taking it apart. Tie ends use white out to mark threads them you are very close to your original alignment
more than one way to skin a mule, yes. Actually one should use a ball joint removal tool, but they cost a ton and most do it yourselfers aren't going to shell out that kind of money.
wow, a blast from the past Scotty! Look how young you were!! .. i knew you've been a mechanic a very long time, but not that you've been on YT this long .. way to go Dude.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME, NOT LIKE HAVING IT ALL SET UP TO FALL APART. NOW LETS GET TO THE REAL WORLD WHERE IT AIN'T THAT SIMPLE WITHOUT SNAPPING SHIT AND USING A CUTTING TORCH MAYBE..
That’s so crazy I watch his newer videos now and this is my first time watching this one and he looks way younger
Only one Scotty Kilmer in the world. Thank you!
Brother, you make these repairs look easy. I need to be medicated before I work on my vehicles. Oh the pain. I never carry out repairs sober. Its like hunting or fishing... sober.
Holy shite he's done in just over 3 mins. This classic Scotty is no mucking around.
This is a great video! i replaced my wheel bearing on a 99 mazda protege and lets just say i wish i saw this video before hand! it took me a while, but got it done eventually.
First time viewer - SCOTTY - YOU ROCK! Very nice, terse, and to the point. I have a 1997 Nissan 200SX I bought knowing the wheel bearing is bad. I was sad when I was told I couldn't just replace the entire hub - but then found this movie. That's the ticket! THANKS!
@scottykilmer scotty, you're the best!!! I did the job myself, except press the bearing, and I saved over $300 from letting the dealer do the job. Thank you much !
I love your videos Scotty Kilmer! You habe a great speaking voice, you're well educated, and you address most common problems.

Scotty is a RUclips legend
You only see some of the SIR TOOLS kit. that can press: the hub out, old bearing out, new bearing in, new or old hub back in ON THE CAR without labor of removing the knuckle and need for alignment after. You only need to pop the lower balljoint to clear the cv axle and complete the job @ 1/2 book time. You can get the basic SIR tool for your car less than $300 and save $ 1st time its used. I have similar OTC Hubtamer..awesome tool..my shop press is get'n dusty now!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK SCOTTY
This is my weekend project. Thanks for the demo, it will be a big help.
Congrats on your Golden Play Button Scotty! Love your videos and have watched....almost all of them...lol. I'm working on a friend's 2005 Highlander. She needed front wheel bearings, so I ordered her new bearings and hubs and had them all pressed together at a local machine shop. When I got them back, the bearings had been pressed just a tad too far. The outer part of the bearing was stopped by the snap ring, but the inner part was actually flush with the snap ring. For example, if I had to take the snap ring out, I couldn't, because the inner part of the bearing is in the way. I hope that makes sense, I suck at explaining things. Anyway, I was able to get one bearing all good and moved back to where it's supposed to be (drivers side), but the passenger side got all screwy when I tried knocking the bearing back to where it was supposed to be. Now, the outer part is still up against the snap ring, then I can see a rubber seal of some kind, then the next section of bearing is knocked in too far (about1/4"), then the innermost section of bearing (that the hub WAS pressed into) is right where it's supposed to be. So basically, 2/3 of the bearing is in the right spot, but the middle section is in about 1/4". Also, the hub came out along with the race when I was trying to knock the bearing back in position. Seems like that hub came out awfully easy....idk. I wish I could post pics. I want to just order another new bearing and have it pressed in again, but problem is time. That would take another week and she needs her vehicle....UGHH!! So do you think this bearing is ruined or can it be used again? I love doing favors for free! Always....and I mean ALWAYS works out this way and I end up being the bad guy somehow! Also, when I got the hub and knuckle assemblies back from the machine shop and they were ready (I thought) to be put on, I noticed that when I grabbed the hub and moved it to check for "wiggle", they both had some play. Not much, but they did wiggle a bit. Is this normal for these Toyotas? Thanks in advance to anyone that may be of help!
Hey, I'm a mellow mechanic. Many are drunks and people haters over time. Can be a nasty job, but I work by myself so it's better for me.
Scotty, you did an excellent job on that video. Clear and concise.
NO, you're the second guy to make that mistake. All modern front wheel drive bearings come already packed with special grease and are ready for installation right out of the box. If you put more grease in, it would probably be the wrong kind and mess things up, on top of being too much grease and leaking all over the place. Scotty Kilmer
Yes, that's the Cave Man way of changing out bearings, nothing wrong with that. I used to do that when I was a kid with no money. Scotty Kilmer
With the right tools it's always easy.......nice video Scotty!
This wheel hub assembly is a lot more complicated than most I've seen. But at-least this video shows what you may encounter. Thanks for the video Scotty!
he did alot of unnecessary work thats why
Hello Scotty.. you're one of the best out there, really. You make 3 or 4-minute videos when others would take half an hour. One thing though. How would you replace a whole Hub, already packed with the bearings inside, in that same car?
Scotty Kilmer you're a life saver..

This is the reason why I love american made rear wheel drive cars and trucks, none of that pressed in sealed bearing crap, re pack-able and easily replaceable bearings.
Ah, but so is paying a mechanic 100 bucks an hour to fix your car. me, I'll fix em myself.
Best Damn mechanical video tutorial I've ever seen.
Awesome video!!! Short, and fairly complete. (except for the speed sensor) I wish more "how to" videos were like yours great job.
@avsrule247 YES, but they cost a lot more, and in many cases, they are not sold as a unit. If you can buy a unit, feel free if money is no object.
I will try it myself and hope for the best. Doing a 2011 Ford Fusion cause Scotty said they were great cars so....I went and bought one last week, but the front wheel bearings on both sides are loud and get crazy hot so I guess they need done. Doesn't look to difficult. Thanks Scotty

If you can do this kind of work yourself, you are leagues ahead of we mere mortals.
My hats off to Scotty cause he has to assume most do It yourselfers will have only basic tools. He knows lotsa ways to skin a cat so its up to you to improvise. If you have these pressed in bearings here's another low $ way: 1. Get bearing @ Advance Auto & ask for FREE slide hammer kit to slap out hub & front end kit to pop bjoint & pull race off hub.
2. $80 ($40 sale) Harbor Freight universal FWD Wheel bearing adapter kit. Gets it done fast & safe + u end up with a useful tool.
Thanks Scotty! I enjoy your sense of humor too! Count me as an old new subscriber.
I agree sir Elton
Tis true. But on this old junker corolla all the boots were all torn out to begin with, so I just used the fork as I was replacing them all anyway. Scotty Kilmer
@1999jase You don't need a spring compressor to replace a wheel bearing, only if you are changing the strut out also. Scotty Kilmer
I have done the races with a good drift punch and appropriate sockets or bushings, never had a problem. been turnin a wrench 40 years, but nowadays we do need special tools for a lot of things, I usually just fabricate/weld tools or jigs that are very expensive otherwise.
@TheARDENWOOD some cars use separate seals, some build them into the bearing assembly itself. Scotty
Dang, Scotty sure makes these things seem very easy to do. Thanks for the videos Scotty, keep em coming!

wow, i mean I already knew I couldn't change the ball bearing in my car, but this really drives it home! fascinating stuff, and my mechanic quoted me about 250$ to do it. Not a bad price at all for everything that goes into it!
@Mikej1592 NO, length doesn't mean anything, it's just a small pressure vacuum line after all.
That's way more involved than the rear! No wonder it's a $150+ labor job. Thanks!
@DoNotObey1 yes, but many times you can't buy a whole housing, some come with complete hub and bearings, some dont' scotty
Young Scotty is a stallion.
This guy is my go to anytime something happens
Best down to the point HowTo ever this will save my day tomorrow THX Scotty!!
@scottykilmer Thanks for the help Scotty, I removed the whole axle assembly and took it to Napa to have a new bearing pressed into it. The whole job took me 90 minutes to disassemble and reassemble the assemby onto the car. The hardest thing was the removal of the hub nut. You're awesome!
If the old hub is frozen in the knuckle take a BFH & drive out 2 of the old wheel studs. Full length wheel studs DO have clearance to be removed from the hub with the knuckle if you try to turn them to the 9 o'clock position. Remove the 3ea 10mm bolts & the dust shield. Also remove the 32mm axle nut securing the drive shaft to the hub. Next make sure the driveshaft splines are semi-loose in the center of the hub. Buy 2ea 4" X 1/2" hex bolts (full thread). Stick them through the 2 lug nut stud holes placing 2ea 1/2" hex nuts on the back side of the hub. After removing the 32mm axle nut, screw the 2ea 1/2" bolts in pressing the tips of the bolts against the steering knuckle (NOT THE EDGE OF THE WHEEL HUB). This should serve to "press" out the old hub from the steering knuckle.
The long bolt & nut method along with a BFH worked on my Indiana driven 09' T & C with 130k on the clock.
this is one of best vids on here,i learned exactly what i was looking for, very simple and to the point
@notmycupotea Yes, struts need compressing IF you replace them, but I wasn't doing that so I didn't use one here. As for the boot, yes, I replaced this one anyway as it was worn. If I use em over, I use a different tool, a small tie rod press off tool. Scotty
That fan you got running is a great idea. No wonder I get hot as hell in my garage. Thanks!
Scotty you are one of the best out there! 😊
yeah, im mechanic/welder but i have not a shop and not working now, i only have a tig for welding and tools, ill try it this week because this tool should works even as bushing puller/remover.
thx !
Thank you for your prompt response. I watched the video for removing the rear bearing and, that video answered all of my questions .
Great job!!! Thanks again you rock!
they actually make pullers for that which bolt on and force the shaft in
Gotta love when he’s about to hit the lower ball joint with the fork and it clips to having it come off with the knuckle haha. Takes me 25 mins to get it out with a shop press this dude bangs it out like he’s making a bowl of cereal.
THANK YOU SCOTT!!! THIS VIDEO REALLY HELPS!!!! I finally fixed my front wheel bearing on my 1990 honda civic hatchback!!
like your straight forward matter-of-fact style !
