    Both of the legends so articulate, so aristocratic, read the game so well. Those days cricket was a game unlike today's circus.

    • @szarefeen9744
      @szarefeen9744 10 месяцев назад

      You should have written that those day's cricket was a pure gentleman's game. Both Pataudi and Gavaskar were always honoured as legend cricketers and cleaned gentlemen as well, in contrary to today's cricketers' characters.

    • @vyseerx
      @vyseerx 10 месяцев назад +1

      Both articulate for sure. A sign of excellence of Bombay schools ,and also MAK Pataudi got his education in UK. Both aristocratic- no, that’s not true. SMG is truly middle class but came up on his own. MAK Pataudi is a prince of Pataudi village -and has royal blood. His fame is not about the volume of runs he made, but the way he made them. He was a swashbuckler and this despite losing one eye. SMG was a legend of Test batsmanship but he could not really adopt to ODI s and replicate the same success. He scored 36 out of 60 overs match and stayed not out !. And this interview he steadfastly refuse to accept his slow batting - because those were early days . Not this money, not this much training , is available in those days . So it was not surprising. When india won the World Cup in 1983 - they scored 183 of 55 overs! Now a days it’s a par score in T20.
      Those days it was an amateur’s game , now it’s professionally run with cricketers are fitter , faster endure well and score 100 out of 40 balls !

      The world also has to know that Sunil Gavaskar scored 36 runs in 60 overs in one world cup match India lost chasing. They purposely dropped his catch knowing he is a convicted panatii. He was only for his records not for winning matches......when the world will awake and realize this truth

      Every cricketer has his failures. Gavaskar is no exception. That doesn't make him a selfish player. He saved a lot of games for India. And cricket has become faster with more fit players but T 20 is not considered cricket by many cricketing legends of yesteryears. The game has become very commercial. The bowling standard has come down considerably hence so many 4s and 6s.

      @@clinteastwood9195 Sir, all the Christian missionary schools and Convents laid the foundation of education in India. If Sunny had had the good fortune to attend one of those, then we know where his accent, vocabulary and discretion came from. Further, we know that only the English Game revealed his delicate talents to himself and the world. Else he would have attended Indian gurukul and be struggling to make ends meet.

    In his period, the mainstay was SMG, on whom the entire Country was relying. On many occasions, when SMG was cheaply, the score of the Indian team was very low. When he was out in single digit, India could not go beyond 200 runs, on a number of occasions. If bowlers in the team including Kapil Dev, have given more runs to the opponents, it is the primary duty of SMG to build up and consolidate the position, after clearing the deficit. That is why he was so cautious, which was required at that time. Kudos to the real Master.

    I am watching this interview on 01/28/24, after two great test matches ended. I can't tell exactly when this interview was conducted, but it happened probably in the early 1987. It is nice to hear Gavaskar speaking about his reserved feelings on ODI cricket, and talking about that old ways of getting set before playing square of the wicket. I gather a sense of earning runs by playing pure cricketing shots. Surely, 80s Gavaskar would not condone shots like scoop or reverse sweep to fast bowlers, even though Ollie Pope scored 196 by constantly playing those shots.

Even the leg glance where the ball cannot be kept to the ground the time of executing the stroke. I was also told to play the late cut on balls bowled wide of off stump and never to play forward because the chances of getting caught at slips are very high which is still a fact as we know that a very good player lose his wicket to that shot. Watch Vijay Hazare the way he played and I copied his style and played for Madras league for couple of years before Inrealized that I am not made for this game as this was the only game I preferred to play and no other game I tried my hand very seriously.

    He was my favorite in mid 1980s. I didn't watch much he retired in 1987 WC. Then Sachin arrived in 1989 and i could see the one day version of Gavaskar. By 1992 i could see Tendulkar getting almost frustrated at no 5 and i wished he would smoke all bowlers like Greatbatch ...that happened march 29, 1994 onwards.
