In this episode of Adventures with Purpose, we travel to Branson Missouri in search of lost valuables from the 2018 Duck Boat Accident.
The DUKW ("Duck" or "duck boat") is a wheeled amphibious vehicle used by the United States military and its allies during the later years of World War II and the Korean War. The vehicles became available in surplus after the Korean War, and a veteran in Minnesota began a business giving rides aboard the vessels to tourists on the Wisconsin River. Over the last 50 years, the practice has expanded to other areas. Several major tourist destinations in the United States feature duck boat tours, including Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
Before the Table Rock Lake accident, there had been several other fatal incidents involving duck boats, notably one near Hot Springs, Arkansas, on May 1, 1999, in which 13 people died. That incident was attributed to several factors, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB); inadequate maintenance was the main cause, with other contributing factors including inadequate reserve buoyancy and the continuous canopy roof over the passenger cabin preventing escape. Among others, recommendations were made for amphibious passenger vehicles to either add additional buoyancy to prevent sinking when flooded or require passengers to wear life jackets and remove the canopy to allow escape in the event of a sinking.
The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Central Daylight Time on July 19, 2018, as a line of severe thunderstorms approached the Branson area. Approximately an hour prior to the accident, the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for areas around the lake.
It is not known whether the two crew members aboard the vessel were aware of the warning or what action they attempted to take. The National Weather Service reports that winds in the area at the time were in excess of 60 miles per hour (100 km/h), and the storm over the lake was moving very quickly and causing three-foot (one-meter) waves on the lake.
The vessel was a refurbished DUKW built in 1944 and extended to hold more people, a design known as a "stretch duck". The first 911 call was received at 7:09pm as the boat was already going under the water, according to the local sheriff.
Local officials reported the following morning that all passengers and crew aboard the vessel had been accounted for and confirmed a total of 17 deaths.
The ages of those who died in the accident ranged from 1 to 70 years old, and nine were members of a single-family visiting from Indianapolis.
None of the passengers or crew were wearing a life jacket when the boat sank.
Our goal with this dive was to locate the crash site and recovery any lost valuables we could return to family members of lost loved ones.

In 1994 my mom, myself, my son and his dad moved to Branson. We camped out at Table Rock Lake for 6 weeks while we worked to earn enough money to move into a home. We were able to rent a small two bedroom trailer for $225 plus electric and propane. I loved riding the duck boats. I was so sad to hear of this accident back in 2018. I am glad you were able to search this area. Those people deserve to have their stories and memories preserved. Thank you for your content. I enjoy that you treat these circumstances with such care and respect for the people involved.

Love the Ozarks. Remember that day like it was yesterday. Shattered all our hearts to know what all these families endured. Have been on those ducks numerous times. My daughter went to college at C of O in Branson. Best concept for college ever. Students work in exchange for debt free college degree. It is a tight community. Felt the jolt again. My heart was overflowing as I read losses and pain in comments. My heart goes out to all family, friends, community of those touched by this horrific accident. May you reflect on the fond memories you shared together. They are never forgotten and forever missed.
Another note…when my friends son lost his retainer they placed huge metal net in area and his retainer was retained within minutes. Seemed like efficient way to retrieve metal valuables and trash for that matter. Thanks for all that do to clean environment, help families and help solve cases. Your due diligence does not go unnoticed. Thank you to all involved.

I rode the ducks that very morning with my kids. Such an enjoyable excursion. We were all absolutely shocked to hear of the tragedy later that evening. The entire town was just so subdued that night and the next day. Was shocking to see all the ducks parked in a row at the venue, and the memorial in the parking lot. The victims cars were still in the parking lot the next day. Such a tragic event.

I rode on them a week before the accident. I remember watching a play and when it was time for an intermission, everybody who was there checked their phones at the same time and saw the news.
My dad had a conversation with a random guy a few days later about it, and the guy was apparently on the one RIGHT IN FRONT of the one that sank.

My son was attending The College of the Ozarks at the time. The day of the sinking he drove near the area. He ended up helping with the shore search that evening. After a while of searching; he found a baby's bottle. We later found out that there was a baby on the duck. This affected him greatly. My son will talk to anyone about anything. He called home alot , but after this we didn't hear from him for several days. He had wanted to go into law enforcement before the accident, but never mentioned that again. The terrible tragedy affected him greatly. The duck driver made a bad call that day. He thought that they could beat the storm. The lakes on the White River system are large. The waters act just like the ocean when agitated by the powerful summer storms in this part of tornado alley.

What a tragedy. I can't even begin to fathom how a business like that would not require life jackets on every person on board. Here in California they don't play. You are required to have a life jacket on board for every person on the vessel.

    • @jasonhaynes2952
      @jasonhaynes2952 3 года назад +38

Wearing a life jacket in a situation like this is more likely to kill you than save you. If you're in an enclosed cabin, you can't swim out if your life jacket keeps floating you upward. When a plane crashes in water, they tell everyone not to inflate your life jacket until after your out of the plane for this reason!

The last one I watched, the car had been in the water 7 years, and was missed by the local dive team. But when these 2 realized they were in fact over the car, they both burst into tears. The gravity of knowing they just found that young man after so much searching. They were denied by the local authorities any participation in aiding in his recovery, and yet they were very understanding and humble. I probably haven’t seen any of the first videos they produced. I’ve seen other divers (which is probably why this channel
Showed up in my feed) where they just dive for lost articles in party boat zones. But those guys are usually pretty cool too trying to find the owners of the phones, jewelry, wallets etc. I gotta admit, now I want to see the douche baggery you’ve mentioned cuz I feel like either I am missing out, or, I have a Waaay different definition of that terminology lol. We were in branson that day. My kids begged to ride the duck boats but I kept saying no so we went to white water instead. Well white water closed early because of the storm and As we were leaving there and walking to our vehicle the wind started and blew dirt in everyones eyes and we finally found our way to the truck and got in and as we sat there while the wind was blowing, we heard the sirens and I told my husband that sounded like alot of sirens and I hoped it wasnt to with a tornado or a boat on the water, because the first day we got to Branson it stormed and as we ate at joes crab shack it overlooks the lake and the water was so choppy from the storm it was scary. As we pulled out of town my phone started going off with alerts about the duck boat and my heart sank because I just knew something on the water happened. That storm came through so quick no one was prepared.

I live 5 min by water from the Belle. We get storms like this during the summer all the time. We had a big one this summer over Labor Day. They always come out of nowhere and kick up the wind and the waves really big.

@Dana Meyer nope. they are in the exact spot.... everyone who lives there knows exactly where it was. Its a very small town. The guys are correct though, we have a huge diving community because our lake is so clear. I saw dive flags there earlier in the summer.

OMG! I live on that lake! I would have bought you lunch had I known. I remember that day, we were driving home from our beach vacation and upon leaving for the long drive home, I checked the weather at home and along our drive. I mentioned to my husband, we’re going home to bad storms, I hope we get home before they hit. We’ll we didn’t, we were about 2 hours from home and our phones starting going crazy. My husband has been in law enforcement for 26 years and is a reserve deputy in that area so we knew something bad had happened. It’s just so sad when something like this happens in your home town, the grief is palpable. I’ve been a fan of your videos for a while now but this one got me, I just pray if someone did dive before you, they gave the items to the family.

Woah this is crazy close to home, I found this channel today and came from a video where y’all found a man named Ethan, I scrolled through the suggested videos and saw this, I rode on one of these back in 2015 or 2016 and it’s Crazy to me that one of the funnest things I’ve ever done with my family was the cause of so much pain to other family’s, I remember the boat driver got to pick multiple kids to help ’drive’ the boat and I was just floored that I was able to help drive it. I was heartbroken when I heard about this happening back in 2018, So I just wanna thank y’all for doing this for the family’s of the effected people💕
