It was so long ago that email was the quickest form of mass communication, but yet, the fact that they're responding to emails on TV in 2001 is a clear sign that we had already entered the digital age. Fascinating.

    Did Jan Ullrich ever get out of the saddle? Even once? I honestly can't remember seeing him stand up in a race.

    • @scninja07
      @scninja07  4 года назад +3

      It was pretty rare that I saw when he raced in the TdF in the years that Lance won. But, if you watch the video I posted for the 2001 Stage 13 to Pla d'Adet, he actually gets out the saddle to attack on the Peyresourde (ruclips.net/video/rqdR9wOkDTQ/видео.html) and then again on the final climb at around an hour into the video.

    • @neonnaughtsie4726
      @neonnaughtsie4726 4 года назад +4

      @@scninja07 Yeah, after asking that question I saw him briefly stand up to respond to an uphill attack by another rider. Didn't last though. He sat right back down after three seconds. When I was riding and doing inclines, it was crucial for me to stand up every now and then and just change my body position/use different muscles. If I didn't do that, I would decelerate and get tired more quickly. I sometimes wonder if it would have helped Ullrich compete with Lance in the mountains if somebody would have been in his ear to get out of the saddle every few minutes.

      What cheapens it is that you don't know who cheated better - could be that Armstrong's wins were more impressive than watching live, but it might also be less.
