  • The 2002 Tour de France was a multiple stage bicycle race held from 6 July to 28 July 2002, and the 89th edition of the Tour de France. It has no overall winner-although American cyclist Lance Armstrong originally won the event, the United States Anti-Doping Agency announced in August 2012 that they had disqualified Armstrong from all his results since 1998, including his seven Tour de France wins from 1999-2005; the Union Cycliste Internationale has confirmed this verdict.
The event started in Luxembourg and ending in Paris. France was visited counter-clockwise, so the Pyrenees were there before the Alps. On average, the stages were shorter than in previous years, in an attempt to make illegal substances (doping) less necessary for the riders.[citation needed]
The favourite was Armstrong, at the time, winner in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The main opposition would probably come from the ONCE team with Joseba Beloki (3rd last year), Igor González de Galdeano (5th last year) and Marcos Serrano (9th last year), and from the Kelme riders Óscar Sevilla (7th last year, 2nd in last year's Vuelta a España) and Santiago Botero (8th last year). Other riders to keep in account for a high place in the final rankings were Tyler Hamilton (2nd Giro 2002), Levi Leipheimer (3rd Vuelta 2001), Christophe Moreau (4th Tour 2000) and Armstrong's team mate Roberto Heras (4th Vuelta 2001). Important riders who were not present were Jan Ullrich (2nd last year, injury) and Gilberto Simoni (winner 2001 Giro).

Amazing that Lance Armstrong is excluded, when Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Mercx, Bernard Thévenet, Bernard Hinault, Riis, Ulrich, Pantani, Contador, Frome are all TDF winners that have been busted for doping, yet retain their titles.
For the first 108 years of Tour de France no Englishman has ever won the tour. In all the "clean" races since 2012 six out of seven winners were Englishmen from Team Sky.
These were the most impressive fights and the most amazing use of team.
Double standard has ruined the sport - allow doping, test every rider every morning up with red blod count is too high eject them. It is more even if all cheat than if only a few do.

Agreed. We all know Lance is an asshole. Being an asshole doesn’t mean you should have your results removed while allowing every winner since 1991 who cheated to keep their titles.
      Hypocrisy.

It does leave you to wonder though. If they were all clean who would have been the real champions? That's the problem. Admittedly probably impossible to solve. It's like tax evasion. Keeping one step ahead of the regulators. So like much else in life, an illusion of honesty and decency. I once got a medal for the egg and spoon race but at least I know I didn't cheat. Didn't earn as much though.

    RIP Paul Sherwen :(!
But it was funny to see here at 45:00 how he and Phil didnt realize that Lance wasnt at his best. I saw Lance s 7 Tour wins almost in full lenght, especially 2000 to 2005 (only 99 not so much), and many people who saw him in 2000 and 2001 thought he was maybe playing poker again here to La Mongie and Plateau de Beille, because he didnt accelerate as fast as 2000 Hautacam, Izoard or Mont Ventoux, or 2001 Alpe d' Huez, Chamrousse, Ax 3 Doimanes and Saint Lary Soulant.
But in 2002 Lance indeed had a bit trouble. It was no coincidence he didnt win the first time tiral agains Botero. He reached his peak form later to Mont Ventoux, Les Deux Alpes and La Plagne, but here to La Mongie and Plateau de Beille he was unable to accelerate as usual. He had to work hard to get rid of Beloki.

Nope the peloton was a lot dirtier before 1999 . In fact this was Lance's easiest win out of the 7 so definitely not the most doped

My mom is a 3 time cancer survivor and my dad beat it once. Till you have helped humanity as much as this man has learn your place. It's so easy to throw bullshit comments out there but the end of the day l could dope you up 100 times more then he ever did in his lifetime and you still wouldn't even place to qualify for the Tour de France.
