- The 2002 Tour de France was a multiple stage bicycle race held from 6 July to 28 July 2002, and the 89th edition of the Tour de France. It has no overall winner-although American cyclist Lance Armstrong originally won the event, the United States Anti-Doping Agency announced in August 2012 that they had disqualified Armstrong from all his results since 1998, including his seven Tour de France wins from 1999-2005; the Union Cycliste Internationale has confirmed this verdict.
The event started in Luxembourg and ending in Paris. France was visited counter-clockwise, so the Pyrenees were there before the Alps. On average, the stages were shorter than in previous years, in an attempt to make illegal substances (doping) less necessary for the riders.[citation needed]
The favourite was Armstrong, at the time, winner in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The main opposition would probably come from the ONCE team with Joseba Beloki (3rd last year), Igor González de Galdeano (5th last year) and Marcos Serrano (9th last year), and from the Kelme riders Óscar Sevilla (7th last year, 2nd in last year's Vuelta a España) and Santiago Botero (8th last year). Other riders to keep in account for a high place in the final rankings were Tyler Hamilton (2nd Giro 2002), Levi Leipheimer (3rd Vuelta 2001), Christophe Moreau (4th Tour 2000) and Armstrong's team mate Roberto Heras (4th Vuelta 2001). Important riders who were not present were Jan Ullrich (2nd last year, injury) and Gilberto Simoni (winner 2001 Giro).
Listening to Phil & Paul is like therapy, makes me feel so at peace 🙏
*One of the greatest cycling videos of all time!*
RIP Paul Sherwen…it is amazing how Paul and Phil could keep you engaged for hours on end.
Thanks even Steven....got more of this....great stuff....☺
Great videos Steve, many thanks
Armstrong GOAT!!
Amazing that Lance Armstrong is excluded, when Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Mercx, Bernard Thévenet, Bernard Hinault, Riis, Ulrich, Pantani, Contador, Frome are all TDF winners that have been busted for doping, yet retain their titles.
For the first 108 years of Tour de France no Englishman has ever won the tour. In all the "clean" races since 2012 six out of seven winners were Englishmen from Team Sky.
These were the most impressive fights and the most amazing use of team.
Double standard has ruined the sport - allow doping, test every rider every morning up with red blod count is too high eject them. It is more even if all cheat than if only a few do.
Jens Petersen froome not busted for doping
Agreed. We all know Lance is an asshole. Being an asshole doesn’t mean you should have your results removed while allowing every winner since 1991 who cheated to keep their titles.
Hypocrisy.
@@fatduck8244 Neither was Lance Armstrong ever!
It does leave you to wonder though. If they were all clean who would have been the real champions? That's the problem. Admittedly probably impossible to solve. It's like tax evasion. Keeping one step ahead of the regulators. So like much else in life, an illusion of honesty and decency. I once got a medal for the egg and spoon race but at least I know I didn't cheat. Didn't earn as much though.
Only Wiggins was English. Froome is a British Kenyan and Geraint Thomas is Welsh. I think you might mean British?
Lance Armstrong 🚴♂️🚴♂️👑
Your videos are GREAT! Ive watched a ton and am commenting on the current one im viewing. I hv some of these dvd sets: TDF from 99-2003. AWESOME how youve posted all these videos to youtube! Thank you
Do you hv the 2003 vuelta?? 🙏🏼
Pharmacies on two wheels. A whole lotta drugs in that race!
In 2010, or 2011, I saw an UFO in Tarascon . 3 in fact. Didn't know that the Tour came across that place.
RIP Paul Sherwen :(!
But it was funny to see here at 45:00 how he and Phil didnt realize that Lance wasnt at his best. I saw Lance s 7 Tour wins almost in full lenght, especially 2000 to 2005 (only 99 not so much), and many people who saw him in 2000 and 2001 thought he was maybe playing poker again here to La Mongie and Plateau de Beille, because he didnt accelerate as fast as 2000 Hautacam, Izoard or Mont Ventoux, or 2001 Alpe d' Huez, Chamrousse, Ax 3 Doimanes and Saint Lary Soulant.
But in 2002 Lance indeed had a bit trouble. It was no coincidence he didnt win the first time tiral agains Botero. He reached his peak form later to Mont Ventoux, Les Deux Alpes and La Plagne, but here to La Mongie and Plateau de Beille he was unable to accelerate as usual. He had to work hard to get rid of Beloki.
This has to be the most juiced TdF peloton in history!
Nope the peloton was a lot dirtier before 1999 . In fact this was Lance's easiest win out of the 7 so definitely not the most doped
No one can beat Armstrong
At 11:56 you can see a teammate holding his buddy’s bike straight so he can have his hands off to take a leak while riding.
The G.O.A.T.
tout le monde ce dopée dans le cyclisme mes lance reste le plus grand coureurs de tout les temps .
lance is from mars .the best of all time he is not from earth
Moudjar Allaeddine yes, from mars because is the best doper ever
John Touch you can dope all you want. You will still suck at everything.
Lance is a drug cheat
@@slzash you are a moron...
ALL the guys were doped to the max that their bodies could use.
What it came down to..was training
Armstrong attack 44:00

This descent at the start is similar to that where casartelli died

He should have waited for him and guided him
Take a deep breath, think of WWE, think of that mindset
Dur.dur.
Armtrong nevergave heras the chance...he could have waited for him so they could have gone together...
Plateau de Bataille? Are you dyslexic, gentlemen ?

more like doping de france lmao what a waste of an entire decade for the sport
Just another day for this magnificent drug cheat - what Phil Ligget should have said.
Chris Richardson everybody on drugs in this sport, it ain’t cheating, it’s called playing the game
Your an idiot, everyone in this race and every race after this dopes you uneducated fool. He was still the best. And what he did for cancer awareness is more then any other person in history. My mom is a 3 time cancer survivor and my dad beat it once. Till you have helped humanity as much as this man has learn your place. It's so easy to throw bullshit comments out there but the end of the day l could dope you up 100 times more then he ever did in his lifetime and you still wouldn't even place to qualify for the Tour de France.
@@Enonymous99exactly most people who still criticize either hate him for other reasons and use that as a excuse to attack him or are just casual headline reader fans there’s a reason other pros don’t sh*t on him anymore because he wasn’t really out of line for the times
