Every time I hear "Ride Like The Wind", I always think of this bit from SCTV
The visual gag is essentially a recycling of Macarthur Park on Mel's Rock Pile but is nonetheless hilarious. I especially liked the gag about the interminable end of Suite Judy Blue Eyes.
I remember watching SCTV when I was a kid. I had no idea what they were spoofing but I still laughed like an idiot.
@@steveasat2 holy sh*t that one was an all-timer. Somebody give me a bloody towel!!
Me too...especially when I'm racing crazily from one location to another at work. And they even worked a salute to Petula Clark into the sketch. I will always love SCTV.
My friends and I watched these shows religiously during our initial years in Toronto - and they still make us laugh - thank you SCTV - for all of the great comedy.
Did you get "To It and At It?"
It is impossible to dislike Rick Moranis.
PetYOUla Clark. Moranis is a vicious man.
some sick mofo in NYC actually attacked Rick a couple of years ago. So glad that he was not badly hurt. He's a national treasure.
I don't like him so I guess your premiss is faulty.
@@lynnfisher3037 I guess your dislike of him is faulty.
The fact that the audio gets out of sync just makes this an even better tribute to the 70s.
Or 80's
was that on purpose? it made the crazy hys ad funnier, but then it became distracting
No, it really doesn't. This video should be re-uploaded. It's the only copy of this Gerry Todd episode on youtube, and the out of sync audio especially ruins the timing of the Ride Like the Wind bit. Rick's material isn't improved by technical errors.
Some of the the older video discs get a little thin...
Beautiful downtown Leduc Alberta
Hank Kingsley 😄😄😄
The big city
Downtown LA ! Thank you I was wondering where it was.
THIS! And it still looks like that after 40 years. The drape shop is gone though .
That "Carpets Galore" ad still had me rolling after all these years
I was laughing too, for two reasons. First, because it's just innately funny; second, because I remembered it so clearly and exactly, that it was more as if the last time I saw it was 40 hours ago, not 40 years ago. "Carpets Galore yeah Carpets Galore yeah ... and the sale ends this Friday."
This has to be one of the most fantastic SCTV segments ever. It is still hilarious and wonderful today (it helps that Michael McDonald has retained at least a cult popularity of course).
Rick Moranis in a pink fuchsia colored jumpsuit and gold platform boots. Does it get any sexier than that ? Me thinks not.
his song makes it even better
still funnier than anything on TV today...
I agree and I'm 45
Funnier than most things on tv back then, too
@@freedapeeple4049 Oh, FP is just NAILING IT
I agree and I'm 58. Lol
thats why we have Internet. Television run its course.
I love how Gerry Todd had Tom Monroe open with a 4 song Pet Clark medley in pink jumper and boots in downtown Leduc, and he came up with backup parts for Mike to sing. Stellar opener.
Downtown Leduc is a hop, skip and jump away from Mrs. Falbo's tiny town.
@@colinwilson4609 We had a joke in our band: "We just got back from playing a show in LA - Leduc, Alberta".
@@Bliggick I always thought LA was Lethbridge Alberta.
Listen to the Music, Listen to the Doobie Bros., Carpets Galore. SCTV was pure genius!
The audio being so far off-sync from the video makes this extra hilarious. A classic!
You know, McDonald was my youth... it was a constant drone on every radio all the time.
I still say "videaugh" in Todd's voice any time home theater topics come up.
*Vuddeo
bing crosby, stills, nash, and young
ignorecorporatenews ohhhh jeeez .... I get it now 🤪🤪. Lol
One of the first SCTV segments I ever saw was the Doobie Brothers for Carpets Galore and it was the funniest thing I had ever seen and heard. Hooked ever since!
Rick Moranis worked for a short time as a radio DJ in Toronto (CHUM-Radio)---Gerry Todd was a spoof of his radio DJ years-LOL!!!
I love how when he's saying his goodbyes as he closes with "Ride Like the Wind" he keeps stretching them right through the intro until the vocals begin...can't have 1 second of "dead air," because in DJ'ing that's a mortal sin...gotta keep talking...
@@trudimarrapodi6722 you have struck upon the notion of "talking up to the post," or where vocals take over. Moranis is eternally funny.
Traffic report in the wee small hours of a Saturday...useful
My wife and I sing the Michael McDonald parts to "Ride Like the Wind", "Peg" , and just about every other song he did backing vocals he did when they come up on the radio....and it's because of this sketch, haha. Especially "Peg"....you gotta watch the documentary Steely Dan did on the making of the "Aja" album.....that's some Michael Mcdonald gold there for ya, haha.
Yes they destroyed his voice but Josie is still a better song.
@@NormAppleton he's still got it, love his youtube channel. Jackson Browne has a great one too.
I love that Steely Dan documentary, with McDonald’s voice isolated lol🤣 ayyy ahhh three deee foreign movie

"Lets play the high parts to embarass him"
"EEEEEEEGGGGGG"
"(sorry Mike)"
Rick really has a great voice.
He was channelling John Fogerty there in the CSN vuddeo
The "Carpets Galore" commercial is hilarious!
There must of been something in the water in Toronto, Canada in the late 70s and early 80s there was SCTV and Rush alot of talent.
Paris in the 20's... London in the 60's... Toronto in the early 80's. There were giants then. It was like you were in on a fantastic secret, aware of an alternate dimension that only a few lucky, select individuals could see, to watch SCTV in this period. It was always great but around this time it had gotten so multi-layered, complete and self-referential that it became its own alternate world that fans became a part of when they watched it. The then-ubiquitous voice of Michael McDonald, depicted here trapped in endless commute from one background vocals recording session to another, his job never done, cursed to wander the four winds in search of work like Larry Storch or Vitto Scotti in sitcoms of the 1960's. Wish I could recall if there was a story behind the odd end-titles music. If I was the guy in that Steely Dan song "Any World That I'm Welcome To" and could disappear and find refuge in a kinder, better world I'd choose the world depicted in this period of SCTV.
Amen, brother. Amen.
What Are You Talking About???
🤷 You Still Live in Your Mother's Basement. 🤦
someone told me they were taping a significant amount of SCTV in Edmonton... anyone know more?
@@jamesewanchook2276 Oh, they absolutely did...from the time SCTV went from syndication to network they were living and shooting in Edmonton. One of the fun aspects of the one trip I ever took in my life to Edmonton, for the 1996 World Figure Skating Championships, was riding a hotel shuttle bus at one point and darned if it didn't make a stop at the MacDonald Hotel, whose exterior stood in for a New York City hotel in "Neil Simon's Nutcracker Suite"...I remember it was on a little hill, isolated from other buildings, but obviously SCTV kept the camera shots tight so you wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't a hotel on a busy street in the heart of midtown Manhattan.
Youre forgetting NYC in the 1940s
Rick doing "Tom" plus Pet Clark ( who doesn't love her? ) and MM and the Doobies...Only on SCTV could you think of it let alone make it work THIS WELL. SO FUNNY. All these years later I still find myself singing, "Ger-ry Todd!!! " Great musical groups too...My favorite was the Flying Lizards doing a cover of " Money." Thanks for posting this!!
reliving the early 80 to83 with sctv is great...2018 dosent even come close to those days good times...sad that there gone
Thank God for Utube or how in the Hell would we be able to reminisce?
da doo doo doo .... lol I will never hear that song the same way. How did I miss this the first time around!! LOL
a tour de force for rick moranis.
The best parodies are the ones that you almost believe could be real.
Only Gary Todd could handle that board with such a flair.
fjvideo or Gerry Todd 🤪
Talking bout downtown! Best SCTV segment ever
Was thinking about this when I watched the Doobie Brothers segment on the 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees on HBO.
"Vuddeo." LOL
Absolute brilliance! Always makes me smile.
First skit filmed in Leduc, Alberta Canada!?!
Wow, I never knew they did another Jerry Todd bit, I only saw the 'Turning Japanese' one. Too bad the audio is out of sync...
Tom Monroe is the singing character, Jerry Todd is the DJ. There's also Tom Monroe singing De Doo Doo Doo by the Police, that's hilarious, too!
squeekycat de do do do will forever crack me up 😂
squeekycat Tom Monroe is like the FM version of Skip Bittman.
@@squeekycat And "Downtown", Petula Clark.
I think out of sync works and thought it was intentional!
Such a talent
I lost it at the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young bit
This episode really exacerbated my Michael McDonald impression.
SHE CAME FROM SOMEWHERE BACK IN THE LONG AGO
Sentimental fooooool
HE came from somewhere back in HER long ago
Doobie brothers on a dark trip doing Bing Crosby. Merry Christmas, maaaan.
the ultimate parody of the self-absorbed entitled DJ
Compared to the NOTHINGNESS of today I actually miss this, this is all of shit that the woke people used to be into. The "Gerry Todd's" of the world made it easier to find out who the B.S. idiots were, Idiots also referred to today as "woke".
Moranis at his best.
And proof that Michael McDonald missed his true calling: Carpets Galore!
This is pure gold.
Gerry Todd/ Michael McDonald skit has been stuck in my head for almost 40years.
The Only reason I don't mind hearing "The Doobies" or "Mac" himself, except for that Fn' Roberta Flack, or whoever it is he sings "On My Own" with, Fn' Audio Poison!
Opinions are like assholes.
Yeah yeah...free installation...!!
27.3 a litre for gas at Petro-Can. Ahh......memories.
I was watching SCTV in the early 80’s. A little vu-dio in the wee wee hours.
i miss SCTV
The canned laughter mars otherwise pitch perfect production.
Crazy Hy's reminds me of Krazy Kelly's, later Krazy krazy, in Winnipeg, not sure who was making a parody of who.
Here in Toronto there was a Crazy Joe's, also Jewish, but he sold drapes.

You can tell the technology was ahead of it's time. By about 3 seconds. ba-dum-bump ttssscchhh
this would make a great meme pun
I have a lot of these shows on beta tape, which means I'll never see them again.
You can get5 a new Sony at Crazy Hy's ... only $1199 and tapes are $19.99
Even though the audio is out of sync nothing will compete with this type of programming. Nobody will create something like The Shmenge Brothers again. Just got my mug and shirt through Google. Hope it lasts years to come.
Love Rick doing Michael McDonald
Masterpiece!
Do you know the original airing date of this skit ? I recall watching this with friends and rolling on the floor laughing. Of course the herb helped.
Too bad Rick retired from major roles such as Dark Helmet.
He reprised his role as Dark Helmet in a recent episode of _The Goldbergs_
Omg he’s doing ALL the vocals, isn’t he?? 😂😂😂❤
whoo, that was a bit difficult naming the intro music .
It's the Doobie Brother's "What a fool believes". I found it hard to figure out after he started singing Pet Clark's Downtown over the music !
Except at the very beginning, the audio is out of sync with the video.
I've never seen another copy on youtube that wasn't. It would be awesome if someone could fix it!
You'd almost expect the outta sync glitch as part of the sketch like the "Super" glitches.
@@tonycanabal1659 “Whoops, we’re outta sync. [smoothly adjusts lever] Thaaat’s a little better!”
The test bars in the monitors are out of phase. That's awesome.
Watch as SCTV predicts MTV and really, RUclips too.
And maybe the weird, live-action stuff on Adult Swim.
they didnt really predict them
Kinda' funny that Moranis played both Gerry Todd and Larry Siegel. One being probably SCTV's most relaxed characted and the other being probably the shows most irritable character.
Don't forget Bill Needles! 😠☹
I haven't seen SNL in decades and I'm wondering if they still can't produce skits as good as these ? Not sure when exactly it was that I stopped watching SNL, but I do recall that the "hit or miss" factor was higher on the "miss" quotient. I don't watch TV any more so I thought to ask in case someone here does. Thanks
8:15 gas was 27.2 cents/litre?!
What a time to be alive!
51Ave 106th St. in Edmonton.
If you were alive during this era this is hysterical
2:38 beautiful Downtown Edmonton, circa 1981.
Much of this upload, the audio wasn't synced with the video.
RIP John Candy - Wagons East!
"Whoops we got the wrong super up there!" 🤣
It’s so dumb it’s hilarious better than anything on TV today
Sctv is great. I recently had a megaphone to confront my brother who stole from me one too many times. He never listens, so...
Sorcerers of the Dinosaur Tech, Circa 1981.
Both tropical and timeless
The poor lip-sync only adds to the fun!
i agree
Better than SNL in my book back then ... and definitely now ...... carpets galore 😂
Blows SNL away...
Who else could pull off a Doobie Brothers/slash/Petula Clark bossa nova version of "Downtown" while using chords modeled after "What a Fool Believes"? 😅😅
Rick conquers the urban juggernaut in a pair of boots that would make Ron DeSantis envious.
❤️genius stuff
Doobie Brothers segment reminds me of Randy Marsh singing Lord... Yeah yeah yeah
Pet -Ula
Peulant... so many details they thought of...
The DJs on the street sounded a lot like early Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold
My dad is Canadian and I’ve watched this show from the Canadian relatives rec room. Later we would sneak outside and smoke cameos.
Menthols! Lol
Mario Impemba, the early years.
So Rick Moranis invented the mash-up?
🎼Gerry 🎤Todd🎼
With SCTV,the only post-80's technology we need is RUclips to provide it.There's plenty of great "vudeo's" to be seen.
Rick Moranis is the master of remixing not only music, but reality itself!
is rick moranis singing ? this skecth is so funny ¡¡
I would swear he was.
@@paintinganimalsonrocks7633 He was. Talented guy!
Bing Crosby Stills Nash & Young Priceless 😂
6:00 Doobie Brothers for Carpets Galore
8:22 “Ride Like The Wind”
Is this the uncut "Bing Crosby, Stills and Nash"? I seem to remember the DVD version totally butchers the joke (to remove any obvious 'Judy Blue Eyes' references).
boy that was funny!!
@@brinsonharris9816
that sucks. May as well have only elevator music playing in movie soundtracks now.
Omg the Micheal McDonald ribbing is so great
That Michael McDonald back up singing cracked me up!! 🤣🤣🤣
you also have to remember that the videos from the eighties and early nineties were horrible quality.
Technical advancements.. .. duh!!!
Ypu mean because the videocasettes have eroded in quality with age?
Or the original preproduction mastering was already terrible?
Mike made every song better when he was on it ya mo be there 💪
Carpets Galore is my favorite segment of my favorite sketch on my favorite TV show! The world does not appreciate Rick Moranis for how well-rounded he is.
Morningside and Ellesmere, that poor little dog !!
Whoops! We've got the wrong "super" up there!
The funniest moments of any GT SHOW is seeing Rick critique himself!
Gas at 27 cents a litre?!
funny although the sound synch is WAY off
That HAS to be Mike McDonald himself on the backing vocals.
