+Terenke Damanman They can be. I got that one for $600 on eBay about 13 years ago, which was a bargain. However, it ended up needing about $1400 worth of work to make it playable, so not the best deal overall. A decent student model bass is going to run about $1000-$1500 to get one in good working order. You could also gamble and get a cheap one and hope it works out. For the closest one to an electric, you'd want one with a cutaway on the treble side (which is uncommon for "true" uprights). Palatino makes a cool one called the Billy Bass, which goes for about $1160 on Amazon. I've played one, they're fun. And they come in black, so, you know, metal :)
Learning wise, it's a much more difficult instrument than the electric, and you WILL have to learn to read music if you're serious about it.
