Increased pay for delivery workers resulted in less tips

- It was supposed to be a big win for delivery workers in New York City, but a new law requires that they be paid a certain wage. This has come with some unintended consequences, including one of them being that they earn fewer tips. FOX 5 NY’s Jessica Formoso spoke with a New York City council member who is trying to reverse this trend.

Wasn’t that the whole point? Pay them a “living wage” so they don’t have to depend on tips?
Exactly, why tf is this even on the news
The problem is the minimum wage is fine however these platforms are limiting drivers hours per day to work and not giving them schedule to reduce paying the new minimum wage.
yes
now limit waiter pay to $15 an hour and no tips. Shave $40k of untaxed income from them and make those greedy bastars pay their fair share!
@@agero2k6 the only limit, i've seen, is 12hours "online" per day, before being told to take a break. Now , many are complaining about working 12 hours a day and only making $50. Well, that's on YOU! For wasting 12hours a day and only taking a few orders. Work multiple apps all day. If that doesn't work, how about GET A REAL JOB! I do Spark (walmart) app and i go out for 6hrs a day, "work" maybe 5hrs of that with downtime between orders and i make $35\hr in california. I stopped doing the other apps (doordash, ubereats, instacart) because there are simply too many people doing it, which lowers overall volume of orders. You should NOT be getting paid for NOT working. You get to deliver and order, not sit around for 8hours waiting for an order. It's not the Apps job to make sure there are enough orders for all to make a good living, it's YOUR JOB TO! When spark dries up ($35hr for the last 18months) you can sure bet i'll find another job and not cry about it. I've been a retail manager 3 times in 13 years. I have skills, but i like doing this right now. These people are crying, have NO SKILLS that employers want. SO, get learn some!
Excuse me? Set minimum 10 % tip on someone that makes 20 an hour? That is not a tip then. It is a fee.
true dat
That part
And at least half of them are probably illegals, too.
I’m against the minimum wage and that automatic 10% tip because not every delivery person handles their order with care but it’s not $20 an hour. It’s $20 an hour of active delivery time. Also we don’t get that 20 dollars at the end of every hour. We have to wait a whole week before we see that money and if we make enough from the base fare at the end of the week for the amount of active hours we don’t get no adjustment pay.
Example: Active hours 25 hours x 20 = 500
From base pay (delivery person made 400)
Adjustment pay is only 100 dollars the following week.
If they happen to make 500 that week before tips then the following week no adjustment pay.
@@BattleRidesNYC is this 25 hours per week?
Deliveristas? So there's an art to it now? Are truckers "truckistas"?

the whole point of this pay increase according to the people who pushed for this. was so that the people who delivered the food didn't have to worry about tips. so is it any wonder why people are tipping less.
i would much rather not worry about tips and get paid what im worth. i still have to pay out for a car payment gas special insrance and car break downs.

I mean 375 pretty good for weekly unlimited miles but gotta work off 375 before pocketing earnings. I take you sprinkle some Instacart and roadie? Seen a couple of dudes driving the rental Hyundai accents for food delivery
@@CRAPO2011 uber morning delivery app after noon about 10-13 hrs a day. it was hard to pay off the car. like after i made enough to do the car for the ween and next weeks car i am tired. its good when you only want to work your ass off for a few weeks than take a break because you work every day because you have to pay that car. but no matter what it doesnt pay me enough to buy my own stuido and im looking for a job that will pay enough to buy something. ill join the other people who droped out the work force til the pay goes back up. i dont wana work for less money than my parrents. *NO ONE SHOULD , life is supose to get better ever year. but to many people in the us complain about 20 hr minimum wedge, but dont look at how hard it would be for a full timeer making 20 hr minimum would be to rent their own apartment. and i feel like every job pays close to minimum 20 hr type . idk ill just do that #lying_flat movment thing
She talking to illegal people. How they get on the app.
Paying someone legal to open a those account
they use legal families id to get on the app. Somebodys uncle registers to be a driver, and gives the guy the login. Bank info is of the person though. Dont ask me how it works out with taxes, guessing thats done sketchy too. Someone is paying the price.
Only in democrats cities

Fuck this. I'm not gonna tip someone who makes $20 / hr.
Can't have your cake & eat it too
Half the delivery people can’t even speak English they aren’t even supposed to be working here period
Exactly because a nice number are illegal
even if you're right shouldn't the people you're mad at be the business owners? At any time employers could NOT hire people not legally allowed to work... however that would drive up costs around the board then you'd complain about how expensive everything is.
Also there are plenty of US citizens that dont speak English, get over yourself. there was quite a while in america where German and dutch out paced english full stop.
CRY MORE
Tips shouldnt be a thing. Employers should pay their employees a living wage.
What's a living wage? Apparently, illegals can't even live on 20 bucks an hour, free housing and healthcare, and handout debit cards.
ok when you order food delivery you are the employer so pay more
so, employers should charge more to offset the cost, right? Or maybe employers will just fire all humans and hire machines who doesnt need vacations or complain
That day will come soon I will be glad @@temujinkhan6326
The delivery fee went up so no more tipping .
Fast food and retail workers make the same per hour, except they don't get tips. The same goes for health insurance/benefits etc. Why do delivery drivers feel they need to be making a lot more? All they are doing is delivering food from point A to point B. There's 0 customer service needed for the job.
Fast food and retail workers don't use their own mode of transportation at their own out of pocket cost and most are indoors not risking themselves in inclement weather. There is customer service needed as you interact with restaurant workers also have to deal with customers and how they want to receive their order (some enter the wrong address ) , walking up 6 flights of stairs on buildings with no elevator.I will say many drivers suck bring the food cold =why they don't get tipped.
@@CRAPO2011 lol there is no customer service with the restaurant workers. They literally shove their phones in their faces and get angry and impatient if the order isn’t ready. They are freelancers who can work their own hours. All you really need is a bike and a cell phone. Delivery drivers who are here legally can also tax write off their expenses such as e-bikes, gas, cellphones etc.
@@migez1 yeah if they buy a new car then that is $40k income that they did not pay income taxes on. talk about greedy corporations not paying their fair share. Thats $10k in taxes they just skipped out on that retail and fast food employees have to pay
they have to pay for E bike maintenance and they are being paid for active hours so sometimes they can make only $20 for 3 hours waiting for deliveries and they have limited hours to work plus its a dangerous job
@@migez1 Im on the apps, I don't shove the phone as that is rude and wastes time , I rather tell the worker like a human the name but some workers are bitter and ask to have the phone shoved in their face " I wanna see the name on screen". There are write offs as 1099 workers but still some taxes have to be paid to Uncle Sam haha
people stopped tipping because they are getting paid more then most people in nyc. Waiters get paid way less and need tips if you are paid almost $20 I don't see a big urge to tip so largely
People stop tipping because they are paying the increase wage . There is a new fee applied to " offset cost of new wage law" . So why tip if Im getting charged for the new wage increase .
lol u have no idea we actually make less than minimun wage
People have stopped tipping because service has declimed amd tipping demanded.
so $20 an hour regardless if you make deliveries or not. how's that work? Just clock in at 6am clock out at 9pm. make 0 deliveries and you pocket a shit ton of money. and you're still complaining about tips?
you cant clock at any time, you need schedule and be active doing a delivery to get paid 20hr
Your part of why America is failing
Originally NYC said it would be 20 per online time then the city folded and made 20 while on active delivery. no deliveries no 20 bucks an hour.
@@welost2night445 so take your time doing the one delivery lol
@@reeeech9245 I GOT BANNED ON UBER FOR MILKING TIME
they say all this but they don't mention how the companies also started up charging even more for the deliveries. the tip is basically already incorporated during checkout without saying the word "tip"
Thet have a delivery charge added to the bill with a note that this charge is not a gratuity.
Soon the we have to tip the traffic lights.
You will be expected to tip the policeman who writes you a citation.
$19 an hour is better than the workers making the food itself. Delivery drivers shouldn't be paid more than minimum wage. They get tips. Just like servers.
The apps make bank charging exorbitant fees to the customer they can afford to pay above minimum wage.
they are literally being paid a pretty good wage and people still need to tip? when will this tipping culture end
make sure you tip your Doctor
I get my food in person!!!!

DoorDash and all those crooks hire people regardless if they have valid documents. I had delivery drivers named “John Taylor” and look like a Carlos come to deliver. No phone number, car description, nothing. Makes you wonder if something happens who’s responsible?
I stopped ordering here in Chicago. Too many migrant men showing up under a female name.
I'm a Carlos who used to average $25/hr, and take good care of my customers, but I got undercut by a bunch of illegal Carlos taking $2-3 deliveries. Now, when your overpriced food is cold, late, or brought by a shady, Carlos, Doomer Eats and Door Trash allow this to happen. When these apps hire shitty drivers, you get shitty service.
@@carlosarias2011 Totally agree. I see it happening in retail too. Hired a bunch of people who can’t speak a lick of English and just stand around while a few of our ogs are busting our arses. I don’t really use Delivery as I’ve had horrible experiences and rather get my own food. But good for you.
Just stop ordering.
@@krystingrant6292I’m not ordering so to say. I work in retail that works with these lunatics.
Wages are taxed…..tips are not taxed if not reported. Govt did it to collect more money. Illegals don’t pay taxes….restaurants and the apps have to pay taxes or get in trouble with big govt.
Sucks to suck…I never tip delivery people now I’m paying too much on delivery fees as is.
I agree the delivery fees are excessive, but if a delivery driver goes above and beyond I think they should get a tip.
Why would I tip someone making $20 an hour?
Increased pricing for delivery drivers, congestion pricing…WTF NYC…get it together!
Uber needs to be taken to court
Dont need a fancy degree to figure that out. Same things happened at bars. Beers went up, tips went down. Their overhead went up, my pay didnt.
As it should? We are paying a premium to make sure they get fair pay. Tips were always compensatory.
NEVER TIP.
New Yorkers really need to read Basic Economics
What did you expect? Companies raised the cost by adding fees. Customers are expected to pay more and then tip 10% on the higher price paid?
Lmao they act like its hard labor to drive a bike around and drop food off 😂

Screw that! tips on top of 20$ an hour ? What eleae these people want ? They don’t pay rent they get lot of benefits especially health insurance that lot of us don’t get !
No deliveries no tip. Period.
I would never have believed we would be discussing $20 an hour for the lowest IQ jobs in the country. It's just insane. And YES, the tip thing is out of hand. But it's NOT my problem. Due to ever increasing costs, lower quality than ever food, reduced size of foods sold to us and the expectation of tips on top of it, I just eat at home now. 5 years ago I was eating out 5-7 days a week. For the past few years, I eat out once every 6 weeks or so and when I do, I eat at locally owned places. The last fast food I had was about 6 months ago. I am DONE!!!!
I lost 20 pounds when I quit.
I’ve improved my health and saved money 😊
Lowest IQ would be customers that order and then ask where you are ,when in fact they entered the wrong address😆 I agree eating out is a waste of $$$
@@user-oc8kz1zj4m If you're eating at home, it is pretty much guaranteed to be healthier than eating out. Especially with the unknown ingredients restaurants use. Just look up how many ingredients go into mcdonald's fries. Spoiler alert, it is FAR more than potatoes. People online say they can't figure out why they can't duplicate their fries at home. Easy answer. You would be more likely to find the ingredients they put into them at a home depot than a grocery store. You will never be able to duplicate them no matter what you do because you can't even buy the ingredients they use.
@@theodorefreeman Yep. Fast food is made to make you gain weight. Plus it is made to not keep you full for long. I can fix one cheeseburger at home and I am ok for at least 6-8 hours. I can eat two big macs and a large fry and I am hungry two hours later. It is literally designed that way. It's hollow calories.
Man you change the law and got what you wanted and now you want to change it again???
Too bad. Certain industries got tipped because of low pay. Now you get 20 bucks an hour and you expect people to give you the same tip? There are people who make less than that and never get tipped. In my business I had to let go a full-timer and 2 part-time. Either that or jack up the food prices by 30 percent for customers
I stopped using Uber eats in 2017 when the fees and extra charges became ridiculous. A 30 dollar order came with 12 dollar of charges and fees before tips. I’m not paying 40% extra for someone to deliver food to me, I’ll get it myself.
Plus they spit in your food.
So we have new words that use the suffix ,ness, phobic, ism, ist and now we are using the word 'Artista' (Artist) as a suffix just to make a job sound more fancier because there is nothing else better to do
Aren't some restaurants raising prices to the consumer to cover the increase in the minimum delivery wage? Delivery apps even have higher prices (some restaurants) than the restaurants themselves, $1-4 higher in my experience. So consumer pays for the food(some higher than what the restaurant is selling for ), salary increase, delivery, service charge, tax, and tip?
Yeah, I would say a lot of people would be turned off.
The pay is 19.56 an hour of active time. That means from the time you pick up the offer to dropped it off. You don't earn money when you are sitting and waiting.
It’s always some lazy worker that doesn’t go out and look for the work complaining about how they don’t get money and now when they get hourly pay, they messed it up for everyone else that didn’t want hourly pay because I used to make more money prior to the hourly pay some people sit on their ass and think the money is gonna come their way
you only made $63? i slept till noon today and by 3:30 i had made $400 changing oil on lawn mowers.
Screw that. Tipping is NOT REQUIRED! Ergo, just order take out and pick it up in-person.
wow, the law of cause and effect!
Remove the law..
How about pay them a living wage instead of using us for tips
One of these days, New York has to give a master class on how to destroy your economy
more taxable income. less tax free income. just what the government wants
Sucks that it ain’t safe anymore just to send your kid to pick up food. I was my parents pizza delivery boy from age 8 thru early 20s.
😂
Don’t forget to include gratuity when you pay your congestion pricing bill, a lot of desk jocks will be EXHAUSTING themselves preparing those monthly invoices
Ordering from ubereats or doordash is kinda expensive, they jack up prices because restaurants are paying them a fee to use their platform. What costs $11 in the restaurant will cost like $17 on the app. You’re better off calling in to the restaurant directly (if you can) and have them deliver the food that way. I rather not be lazy and get the food my damn self unless its raining/snowing and of course i’ll give a good tip in that scenario.
Stop tips. your working! Not cheering me on!
As HL Mencken said, democracy is the idea that people know exactly what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.
1:29, how has he only made 60$working from 6am-3pm?
that's 171$ in minimum wage my guy.
unless he talking about tips, then it becomes 230$....
customers see high fees and paying less tips, they don't feel proud either, eventually they order less. everyone gonna suffer now
i rather make a living wedge doing my job than haveing to beg or rely on tips. and alot of people dont even tip so rather get the money from the company than begging the customers
They are not happy for getting $20/hour without tipping and want to pass another bill to make up the loss of tipping. Then they will still grumble about $22/hour but no mandatory tipping. ??
We call that greediness
They are charging wild service fees to pay for their $20/hour salary. They want a tip on top? Isn’t the service fee the tip?
The service fee is a creative way for Restaurants to reimburse themselves the 10-15% they pay to the apps. Or it could be the app trying to nickel/Dime the customer.
I know of 7-11 charging 14% svc fee to customers... pissed off customer won't tip, and delivery guy gets nothing from service fee.
Anybody asked y they all immigrants ?
And water is wet
That’s a good thing. Media needs to help change this norm.
I now only tip if it is raining or what I am getting is heavy.
Honestly, I think that I’d rather get paid $30 than rely on tips.
Of course. The company is taking their tips.
They should top tipping altogether.
The reporting is 100% right that DoorDash has made it harder to tip. They have a notice saying "due to NYC law, tipping is now after the food is picked up from the restaurant." I always tip the hard working people delivering my food (they do much more than waiters) but DD has made it more difficult -- out of spite -- to tip them. Sometimes I forget because I'm not watching when the person picks up my food but in these cases I tip them in cash...even though they wouldn't know if I don't tip thanks to DoorDash being petty.
No more tipping, it’s out of control
Here is a TIP;
Learn to CoOK!
They shouldn't get any tip.
No fucking shit, really??
whine for more Per Hour get more.. now whine since Tips effected.. i dunno if it so bad find a different job.. better yet should have planned better
I will make sure to tip the automated food server now
They want the cake and also eat it??
So why are they crying again? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
How did he work 6 to 3 and only make $63? They're guaranteed $20/hour right?
Long coffee breaks?
Only count when you are active while picking up and delivering the order, my orders used to take around 30 mins, now they make sure it takes them one hour. It’s intentional…
As a delivery driver we used to make way more without the minimum wage thing tips were good back then
Im curious if the employer has to pay more to his workers doesn't he pass it to the consumer in higher prices?
0:41 It’s pure retaliation.
Stop ordering deliveries.
And much less time to work as well.. no tips and less time to work.. unless the weather is really bad and who really wants to work in bad weather?? I don't want to work in bad weather but there's more money in bad weather. It's messed up
TF out of here 🎉 10% these 🥜 😂 no tips shall never be mandatory
Service fees are through the roof and you still expect tip? Okay bud
Forks need to stop using these food apps and pick up there own damn food.
We don’t really make a living wage, they limit the times you can work to just 5 hours in a whole week
Yes, I noticed that. There is an oversupply of deliveristas 19 out of 20 people are happy illegals willing to do $2-3 orders.
Ya don’t need daily meals delivered !! Period ! No one can afford it! I’m so glad peeps are working but tipping should be mandatory!
And they raised it cuz a lot of people don't tip
servers get paid like 2.75$ an hour, i will gladly tip them.
why would i tip a guy who is making 20$ an hour?
Tipping is never a requirement, the law backs that. But Whoa to those who do not tip their Doordash or UberEats driver at least 20%, you will need to watch your food carefully for tampering, as well as those who will drop the order off, take a picture to prove it, tehn take the order back. I'd had to resort to using the tracking to be at the door when they show up, and they now always have to have a picture of me holding my order.
theyre getting close to $20 an hr, i wouldn’t tip either, i would have to tip drive through employees, cashiers and everyone else that gets paid to do a job they applied for and agreed to the amount of payment…
To all the non-English-speaking guys, you should’ve thought more about your future when you were younger
🤣
Im a food delivery worker and also a citizen, I deliver by car and here's how it goes. The min wage law is good but it was done only from bike delivery point of view. With the new law a vehicle driver drives more and earn less, so this is where tips make it worthwhile. Before the new law I would make more. 2nd Food delivery business is all based on basic economics... Supply and demand and this was an argument used to determine the standard payment method and " additional earnings" the apps set based on city rules, so under this payment method it's not done by an individual performance, it's done by an entire market. If a driver has no education on basic economics why are you working in that field, you will be defeated by the numbers, this is why only bike delivery people complains about everything and all these laws is done only from their view. But upfront tipping should be there.
Ok so how about less orders? Because at some point that will be the result of bullying people with a bunch of fees. Bullying people for a tip is becoming ridiculous.
The wealthy don't care they can afford the fees
I walk/drive and get my food. I never tip except when I rarely go out to eat. Funny but I would go out quite often before tipping started eating into my salary. Their loss not mine.
They don’t need no tips
Deliveristas is a new word?
Food is already too expensive, portions are getting smaller and sometimes besides food being poorly prepared the delivery is late. Do I still need to tip them 10%? Food apps are the one ones getting rich here, even if you pay for a subscription they still charge you a dollar they say to help maintain the app.
With higher prices 10% will definitely make it unaffordable. But there really no choice because even when you pick up people expect a tip. They ring in your credit card and the screen asks 15% tip and up. Today a 3 dollar coffee it end up being 5 with tip. I got the solution… get a real job.
When you (literally) pass the buck to consumers, you’re providing capitalists with a free workforce. It’s the company’s responsibility to pay direct wages, NOT the customer. #nofreelunch
Just try applying for a deliver app it's like if u not a imigrant nope big discrimination I ordered a burrito today lady said 14 dollars. Delivery guy comes n charge 20
