  • A conversation between Dean Jelani Cobb and Nell Painter, American historian and professor emerita, Princeton University, author and artist.
April 8, 2024, World Room, 3rd Floor, Pulitzer Hall, Columbia Journalism School
Nell Painter (www.penguinrandomhouse.com/au...) has spent the past five decades or so shaping a unique and inspired narrative of American history as a professor, first at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later at Princeton, and through her published works.
Books such as the best-seller The History of White People (wwnorton.com/books/9780393339741) and Southern History Across the Color Line (uncpress.org/book/97814696637...) inspire us to rethink what we know about politics and race. Her deep interest in those who were crucial in helping to shape the country produced lively portraits of Sojourner Truth, Malcolm X and Ralph Waldo Emerson. She later turned to art as a canvas for history.
I Just Keep Talking: A Life in Essays (www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo...) was published by Doubleday in April 2024 and gathers her previous work into one volume.
Presented by Columbia Journalism School, Office of the Dean (journalism.columbia.edu/meet-... ), and the Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights (journalism.columbia.edu/lipma... ). Introduction by Robe Imbriano (journalism.columbia.edu/facul... ), Director of the Lipman Center.
