Programming the FT-991A with RT-Systems S/W

  • RT-Systems makes programming software for most amateur radios. From inexpensive handhelds to the most complex and costly stations, RT-Systems makes it.
    This video shows how to use this software with the Yaesu FT-991A. I also point out of couple of glitches and discuss the work-arounds needed.
    I don't currently, nor have I ever, worked for RT-Systems and I did not receive anything from them for putting this together.

    I want to thank you for this video and your time to make it.
    After watching this video, I made myself an Excel "Master List" spreadsheet listing the Freq, Offset, Tone, name and notes for all the 2m Simplex and Repeater, 70cm Simplex and Repeaters and 6m Simplex freqs I wanted programed into my radios. I then moved the data into RT Systems and pushed it into both my FT-991A and my FT-2900 (minus the 70cm and 6m, it only 2m) and got both on the air in minutes... It was so easy. I love the RT Systems software and its ease of use. Also used it for editing a few menu options. I'm sure I'll learn more as time goes on.

    Thanks for posting. I use CHIRP to program my handheld transceivers. I'm wondering if RT can import from a CHIRP save or if there is another way to move my lengthy list of repeaters from CHIRP to RT? Maybe export CHIRP to a neutral format (like CSV which can be done with CHIRP) and then import into RT (thinking out loud - can RT import from CSV)? A second question pertains to transmit lockout. I can lockout transmit on any of my HT memory channels where I have something like the National Weather Service for example. This is done on my HT by setting duplex to "off" versus +/- like you normally would for a repeater. If I were to accidentally hit PTT on the NWS channel, no big deal. Transmit is locked out and nothing happens. Does the 991A have that feature, and if so, is that a check box in the RT software? 73.

      @ND3N  4 месяца назад

      The only way I can think of is to program you radio with chirp, then open RT Systems and download the settings. RT Systems uses a proprietary software. It isn’t excel, but kind of mimics it.

    I just picked up an FT-991A. It hasn't arrived yet but I was wondering how easy it was to program all the repeaters available locally. There are quite a few. You have shown that here, now I hope I can find the file from another ham. I want to know how easy it will be to convert from say a Kenwood handheld to this radio, do you get a spreadsheet and load it or can the files transfer between different programming software? Or will it need to be RT-Systems configured.

    • @invisalinkaccounts2740
      @invisalinkaccounts2740 2 года назад

      Its super easy. As I said above, I made myself an Excel "Master List" spreadsheet listing the Freq, Offset, Tone, name and notes for all the 2m Simplex and Repeater, 70cm Simplex and Repeaters and 6m Simplex freqs I wanted programed into my radios. I then moved the data into RT Systems and pushed it into both my FT-991A and my FT-2900 (minus the 70cm and 6m, it only 2m) and got both on the air in minutes... It was so easy.
      I would do you own, that way you can set it up the way you like.
      Example: 1-9 are 2m Simplex 10-40 are 2m Repeaters, 45-50 are 70cm Simplex, 51-60 are 70cm Repeaters, 65-70 are 6m Simplex, and 75-80 are 6m repeaters.
      I left a bit of room in between each for expansion. Its really easy once you get into it.
      Also, make sure to d/l the template from your radio and save it as a Template, EX: 991A-Template-05-24-2022, then after you have added all your freqs and info, save it again as a new name like FT-991A-05-24-2022-V1, then Up the V# as you make edits that day. Then If you have to default your 991A or whatever radio, you have a back up for a quick restore.
      Lastly, Make sure the menu settings in your 991A for the Comport speeds are 9600 or better. Mine was really low and it too 15 mins for the 1st X-fer. After I adjusted it to 9600, it went much faster. I haven't tried rasing above that to see if I could get it even faster. I might try that next time I get to mess with it. You can edit that from the menu editor or right off the TFT screen and main menu settings.
      I also keep a copy of all my programed channels/Freqs printed out for quick reference as well as a copy of the ARRL US Bandplans to make sure you don't tune somewhere where your license doesn't have permissions, Unless your an Extra.. :) Then, I assume, you'd know all this...
      Hope that all helps.

    what is the IPO column used for? I see you have the first listing as amp1 and the rest set at IPO

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  5 месяцев назад

      IPO is "Intercept Point Optimization" - When set to IPO, bypasses the RF Preamp. Amp1 and Amp2 apply additional amplification of the receive side. Good for dealing with high noise levels to pop the desired signals. Usually a set and forget. Check page 36 of the advanced manual and play with the values to find the best setting for you.

    I have a good assortment of printer type cables, to that saves me $10, my question is; if I wanted to use one of the remote control software offerings like Remote TX, or WIN4Yaesu Suite, would it be the same printer cable or something fancy?

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  5 месяцев назад

      It should be the same one…. Unfortunately, you can only use it one application at a time.. you should be able to use the serial port (db 9) in the back of your rig as a 2nd CAT port, though

    • @timmyers3428
      @timmyers3428 5 месяцев назад

      @@ND3NI will keep the serial port in kind, but it isn't a huge deal to change the baud rate if needed either.

    Can I use the RT System cable for the 881A for N1MM control?

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  2 года назад

      It is the virtual com port USB cable, so I don't see why not. That port also provides the interface for the sound card. I don't use N1MM (I prefer WriteLog) but the CAT should be the same. 73 de Tom, ND3N

    I tried your suggestions to connect the 991a to my PC with out success. I changed menu item 31 on the 991a to 4800bps. I turned off the 991a and its power supply and unplugged the USB cable. Then plugged everything back in and powered On the power supply and 991a. I then ticked ->Communications ->Get Data from Radio and receive a pop up screen asking for "Comm Port Setup? The drop down box does not show any ports to select as if their are no ports being seen by Radio?

    Doesn’t seem to save the Split Channel I created on the 991A front panel. It saved it as the same frequency on Transmit and Receive. Where do you find the Split in this software?

    • @ND3N

      I’m not sure. I haven’t tried saving a split freq. that said, RT systems has a good customer service and if it can be done, they’ll know how. If it can’t be done, they’ll take a note and get it into the next update. 73

    Hi Tom! I started entering some of my favorite repeaters into my shiny, new FT-991A and noticed something strange. When I write the information to the radio it doesn't seem to pick up the PL tones for the various repeaters. Have you heard of this before?

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  Год назад +1

      On the main page, where you enter your frequencies, scroll over a bit and make sure the column labelled "Tone Mode" has "Tone" selected from the pull-down menu. Then in the column labelled "CTCSS" (right next to Tone Mode) use the pull down menu to select the PL Tone. Once everything is populated, go to the Communications tab and select "Send Data to Radio". If that doesn't work, contact RT-Systems Customer service by going to this link: www.rtsystemsinc.com/Support_ep_5.html - and scrolling down the page until you see "Click Here for Help" and follow the directions to get assistance. Hope this helps - 73 de Tom, ND3N

    Can you program uhf tx vhf RX for sat use

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  2 года назад +1

      You certainly could, but you would need to do something to adjust for the doppler shift. As the satellite gets closer, the frequency on your radio would need to be set higher. When the satellite is at zenith, it will be closest to the published frequency, and as it gets further away the freq would be lower. A better recommendation would be to use the Ham Radio Deluxe S/W which has a dedicated satellite program that would do this automatically, and better, than you could manually. 73 de Tom, ND3N
