- This video discusses my use of the of the FT991A Antenna Tuner and how I can adjust the Antenna Feed Line Impedance to 50 ohms to match the radio.
The video also gives a high-level view of balanced and unbalanced feedlines and how a Balun is used to adjust the impendence in to a safe range the radio and manage with the Antenna Tuner
I hope this is helpful I've been watch a tone of You Tube channels, I welcome all feed back if there's things wrong let me know I thank everyone for any feedback and '73
Thank you for your incredibly useful video. I learned a lot about the internal tuner, something most other people do not explain in detail.
Good evening sir and I'm happy the video was helpful, I enjoy doing them, let me know if there's anything you need from me 73
Informative. Putting up my first HF antenna this week, 10 meter dipole. Got my Technician license back in January and bought me a ft-991a as a reward. Been using 2m/70cm so far, programmed repeaters in my state. Thanks, Ed

Hi Woody63, just checking in you on the air with the dipole? Hope all is good let me know how things are going '73 sir from KI5JUF

Was receiving some so it is working, I'm not much of a talker.
@@westtexasvideogateski5juf255I'm in the same boat as @phxedcwo . I made a couple 10m and 6m dipoles out of thermostat wire and banana connectors and they seem to be fine (made a few DX's to France, Italy, Spain, etc.), although, I do have a few questions.
When I'm on 10m and 6m with my RF Gain set in the middle, the built in SWR meter on the screen always reads around 3.0 or a little higher. If I turn the gain up, it goes right down below 1. Also, I was able to use the automatic tuner the other day when I was making contacts on 10m, but the auto-tuner seems to have stopped working now. I press it once to turn it on, then give it a long press and it just clicks once and shuts down.
Do I need to trim my antenna down and tune it physically first to get my SWR down before using auto-tune? Or is it a problem with the tuner itself? I've seen quite a few complaints about the tuner on the 991a online, but I find it odd that it worked for me at one point and now it won't. Thanks for the video and 73!
Hey buddy, always good to see another 991a video from you. I got a couple club members w 991a sent your direction. Keep up the good work! 73 K0ATV
Good evening Mr. D thanks for the message, always good to hear from your sir, let me know if there's anything you need and have a great 4th of July '73!!
Important stuff/information for ham radio operators. Thanks for putting it out. To you and all of America: Happy 4th of July. 73 KD4FJ
Good evening George, always nice to hear from you sir, appreciate you, you and all have a great 4th and thanks again sir good to hear from you '73
Thank you. Great video with good explaining.
No problem, glad the video was helpful, let me know if you need anything else 73 and Happy New Year !
Very helpful!! Thanks for this.
Thanks for that just got the 991a out the box wanted to see how to properly use the tuner button
Good evening Rye, glad you got the FT991A have some fun and let me know if there's anything you need from me '73
@@westtexasvideogateski5juf255 thanks for the reply I threw up a dipole makeshift haven’t much room here, on most of the bands all I could get was the tune to just flash and flash hi SWR so going to get a long wire this week with unun and see how that goes I’m more of a listener than a tx’er so SWR unimportant at the moment I was just checking the TX of the set 👌🏼
Newbie questions...what would be the purpose of "not" running the ATU? "Tricking" the radio...so it makes TX safe but you're still losing radiated TX power because of the mismatch?
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 73 Bret C/AC0AE
Good evening Bret, thanks for the message glad the video help let me know if you need anything and good luck, keep in touch let me know how things are going '73 sir!
Is it OK to use the tuner on USB 10 meters?
Thank you KE8BLG
Good evening Clinton, thanks very much for message and glad you enjoyed the video let me know if there's anything you need from me '73
What happens if you change frequency without undoing the tuner button?
Good evening and thanks for the message, what I have found is once you activate the tuner at a specific frequency this will set the system to as close as to 50 ohms as possible with the feed line and antenna and save this to memory, at the this point the tuner coils are set to this specific location for a specific frequency. So, as you deviate up and down frequency the tuner will hold it’s last setting so you will see the SWR start to creep up as you change frequency. I hope this helps small changes no big deal large changes you may have to reset the tuner. Now, a benefit is there is a memory bank so you may find as you return to return to certain frequencies and have a consistent feedline and antenna you may not need to preform the tuner calibration to commonly used frequencies. Good luck I hope this helps and 73
i did find 10 meters on ft991 was funny 1.1 swr and acl no reading and somes 1.1 swr and acl meter was reading
For ZL=50 Om i Zo=55 Om SWR=1,2 not 1,1
Error: For Z0=50 Ohm i Zl=45 Ohm SWR 1,11 not 1,1
