West Texas Video Gates (KI5JUF)
США
Добавлен 15 фев 2020
This channel is dedicated to promoting HAM radio hobby, the channel is focused on the FT991A which originally to teach my dad Ron (K5EHL) how to use the radio. Dad was a HAM back in the late 1960’s around the time I was born, and radios were nothing like what Dad used in Fort Worth.
I made a couple of videos, people seem to enjoy them, so I focused on learning making videos on the FT991A and other aspects of the hobby I'm learning to help interest.
I became a HAM when the COVID started in March 2020 I started studying for my technician license, I took my test on-line through a school New England Sci Tech - the class was over zoom - later I took my General Class in September 2020 TX and recently in October 2022 I got my Extra ticket from the same local VE testing team in Abilene. I enjoy the hobby and the comradery it has in the community. It’s nice to make friends right away such as building a station, testing radios and learning about other aspects from others knowledge.

On my 991a I like to set the DNR at 15.
Great Video!!! Thank you.
Nice video. I'm a new general trying to get my first HF wire up. Quick question, why announce you are calling CQ "on 10m" while you are on 10m? Wouldn't anyone hearing you know?
Thank you for all the work you've done on helping other hams with these setting.
Subscription? Wtf it should be pay once wtf
10m is the purest form of ham radio
Your answer to question #8 is incorrect. The correct answer can be found on page 14 of the VE manual in the Credentials section.
I'm interested in cat control. I had my 991A set up for remote when I first got it . But moved and hardly use it . But would like to set up my rig with computer control software....thanks de N5OMV
Can you get this program to work as a true remote via the internet?
That's very cool.. bookmarked that.. nice find Steve.
What Programming Software are you using?
I have a solar con for my current base station and it supports a cobra 29. I am going to purchase a maco 5000 antenna and mount that on a 90 foot tower. I wont to mount my solar con on the same tower but below ther maco at about 70 feet. I plant to oly operate one at a time. In your opinion do you think the lower antenna will impac the maco.
Very informative. Thank you, Jim K2WPA
Is that 10 or 35 feet at the tip or base of antenna?
Hi William, thanks for the message, the height is from the ground to the base of the antenna (were the balun is, if you want the data sheets email me they have take off angles and 1/2 power points to give you an idea what the width looks like here's a video that shows a little more detail ruclips.net/video/2JZuqmTAUco/видео.htmlsi=VrAE4g1NcGNA0d5u
my email is shope02@yahoo.com
Looking at getting base stations with some family. We want to have pretty reliable communication between 40-90 miles as the bird flies. Wondering if that is possible on 2M simplex or would we need to use repeaters? Would another band be better?
Does that antenna receive well on medium wave?
The 991a recves &keysup but no modglation
Steven, I was reading through manual try this Press F/M-List use the right and left arrow keys look for "BK-IN" and make sure it says ON if it says OFF tap it once that maybe why you are not transmit - I'll keep looking 73
To the best of my knowledge, unless you're getting crosstalk that you want to squelch, you don't need set the downlink tone. So if a repeater uses a different tone for TX and RX you can set the radio CTCSS-Mode to "ENC" which allows you to specify an uplink tone and not require a downlink tone. I think this will work 99.999% of the time as the downlink town is only for eliminating noise for your benefit and the repeater does not require it.
Hi Arron - thanks for the message and you are exactly correct - you have a nice xmas and 73 GL
@westtexasvideogateski5juf255 Merry Christmas!
what do u keep your anti vox at?
Can you tell my i have no modalachion on my 991a
Hi Steven, give me a few more details - I'll try to help 73 and GL
Good morning Steve, am new to ham radio, got tech. in Oct this year. Now working on General studies. Am intrested in antenna construction, built 10 meter inverted "V" for my station, also your review of Comet cha 250 hd makes me want one soon. Your videos are great, keep it up. Have relatives near you in Merkel. 73's KJ5IGE
Hi Mark, its a pleasure to meet you let me know if you need anything if in the Abilene Area look me up see you on the air 73 and GL..
where is 12volt located?
I just got a 991A and, to my dismay, the waterfall did not work. Thank you !! you renewed my faith in Yaesu,, but I wonder what the wisdom was in having the default have to spectrum frozen. That is one of the main reasons I, and many other hams, get this radio! 73 and thanks for the very well done video!!\ 73
Hi Ron, thanks for the message - I was shock too so I made the video 73 and GL..
Great Video I was given this antenna and want to try it out. thanks de Mike N8FWD
Hi Michael, good news I hope everything works great let me know if you need anything be glad to help - have a safe and merry Xmas 73 GL
Excellent explanation. Unfortunately Yaesu FT-991a manual doesn’t explain this hence I got frustrated not being able to see this functioning. Now this makes all sense and works. Thanks for sharing and 73s! KP4AJC
You have your home bar set just as mine.
Where is "^r" coming from?
Also 991a. Currently running Amp2 and DNR 15.
What antenna?
Got a factory 2nd for £70 uk. Any end fed wire will beat it by a mile, the 1to6 unun is so losey .You can add a 1to4 balun and turn it into a RYBAKOV, big improvement. Thanks for the review Rob G4WGR
Working on my General....studying transceivers (tending toward the Icon 7300) and studying antennas. I like vertical designs like this comet for vanity reasons (wife). Highest point in my yard has a barb wire fence along the property line. It is around 100 feet from there to the house and my base station, so good coax I know BUT how high off the ground do I need to install this 20+ foot antenna? Just above the highest part of the barb wire fence? Since the highest part of our property is on the property line I cannot guy it down (well I could but only in two directions/3rd would be on the neighbor. If just above the barb wire fence I could 'plant' a strong pole in concrete and then affix this Comet to it. Thanks for your thoughts. W6RYM.
Good evening if you will email me at (shope02@yahoo.com) , Comet has to recommendations with datasheets for takeoff angle and bandwidth from 1/2 dB points, they have test data at 10 and 35 ft. use a metal pole that is grounded this acts a counter pose similar to an end fed. The antenna is essentially a vertical end-fed at 40 and 80 there are losses I have a video that shows data; however, I can talk all over Texas and surrounding areas on 80 and 40 at night I have some playlists that show contacts so there are some tradeoffs - if propagation is strong you will make many contacts let me know if you need anything else best of luck from Steve KI5JUF 73
I recent got an FT-991A - and the tuner.. well... Ok for "standrd" antennas, but I'm using a random wire with 9:1 Unun so I've had to get an external tuner.. the MAT-30 - we'll see how that goes.
Awesome - thanks for the message and hope everything works out have a good weekend 73 from KI5JUF
73s. Joël/F8MGW.
Good evening thank you for the message and kind words, look forward to making a CW CQ with you soon 73 from Steve KI5JUF
Yes, indeed - Thank you very much for your presentation. I really helps.
Good evening George thanks for the message glad the information helped, let me know if you need anything else 73 hope to catch you on the air.
JA3JHT was calling CQ on the frequency when you said "someone is on here let's see if I can get him" so you clearly heard someone but then called CQ. Not a great example for new operators. Listen Listen Listen
Good feedback thanks all good stuff and learning 73
Steve, again thanks for this, after reading the manual a bit more I think I understand he Freq/Gain/Q selections better. I watched another of your videos and menu items 131 through 136 are different between the two videos. In fact, using the MONI setting the unprocessed sound is louder than the processed sound. No worries I will keep tweaking it. I am using a headset and find that I can't run my Mic Gain above 10 not my compression above 10 or I get a lot an ALC into the red and Compression above 10db. The good thing is that I do understand it better due to your videos.
Good evening timmyers thanks for the message these can be tricky let me know if you need anything this radio is a lot of fun 73 and hope to catch you on the air.
Great information. Are there any publications that explain what the numbers mean. I have a headset and have found I get audio complaints if I wet my Mic Gain much above 20, so I am assuming the Mic is a tad hot on my headset.
Hi again that entirely possible press the METER button under FM List and tap it until the COMP comes up then talk at a normal voice if its higher that 5-10 dB there maybe distortion. Good luck and let me know how it works out and hope to catch you on the air 73
DX?
What about DX?
copy/paste is much easier.
NICE video, that M and X in the x-ray panel is no good for us HF guys
Thanks I was curious about that - have a good weekend and thanks for message 73 Steve KI5JUF
Steve - GREAT job on the operational overview! I'm evaluating different sftw packages for my 991A. This is definitely a finalist. THANKS!
Hey Steve- Ron the Columbus PA ham you spoke with is an old friend of mine! The hobby is amazing! 73 de N2VQD
Good evening Randall - very cool yeah it was fun to talk to Ron FB QSO - hope to make a contact with you 73 from KI5JUF
10M today was loaded up as usual today here on the mid-east coast. I get responses back from contests quickly. Previously my 10M was absolutely dead on my 991A. I gave up on the multiband sitting in the backyard and decided to build my own 10m, 30 ft vertical with 3 radials connected to 75 ft of lmr-400. I NOW have a bright blue waterfall (high noise floor I suppose?), but tons of activity I never had before so I’m happy! Your low noise floor seems a bit strange. Perhaps your location just isn’t as active but I’ve been working a good 4,000 mi radius for weeks now during the day. And thanks for the FLrig tip!! Your videos have been MOST helpful to me as a fairly new operator.
Good evening Rick, thanks for the message thanks for the message this vertical seems to have a quieter noise floor I'm not sure if that's good or bad - so far I seem to make contacts and get out so I'll keep working it and keep everyone up to date. Let me know if you need any help with the FLRig - have a good weekend and 73 keep in touch!
I heard Iraq was on 10 meters. Station from England doing 600 watts blew him out of the air..
what is the program you use for pre recorded messages and can you use it with the ftdx10?
Good afternoon Jack I had a quick look the FTDX190 manual didnlt see but they must have it here's a video the pre-recorded messages are done in the FT991A and I use FLRig CAT commands to control the radio from FLRig software on my laptop I hope that helps ruclips.net/video/sC3CDaIsmW4/видео.htmlsi=Vg5a7A2ogk93qEdH&t=210 I will ask around I'm sure that pre-recorded messages has to be on the FTDX10 73 I'll let you know if I find anything !
@@westtexasvideogateski5juf255 thank you for your help
People also ask What does low noise floor mean? The noise floor plays a significant role in audio and signal processing systems. It sets a lower limit on the detectable and usable signals within a given system. Ideally, a low noise floor minimizes unwanted noise and preserves audio quality, dynamic range, and signal fidelity
Good information thanks Elmer for your help my friend!
That's why audio sounds so good in condition like your hearing
Band is long
Nice measurements, good for a lit of Bands!
Is it me or it seems like a lot of work for $400.00 antenna. SHould be open , expand, mount and transmit
Just curious how your opinion has changed since making this video. Do you still recommend HRD and/or Win4Yaesu? Do you use either one more than the other? Do you see any reason to use both? Thanks for the video!
