Voice Processing and Compression Settings, FT-991A

- There are three levels of voice processing for the FT-991A. First is where there is no equalization and the voice levels are flat across the bandwidth. Next is Equalization where you can apply DSP adjustments across 3 (Low, Medium, and High Voice Frequency) across your bandwidth. And finally, Processed, where compression is applied to DSP settings.
Many of us have heard poorly adjusted audio on the band. This video will show you have to properly adjust your levels.
Thanks much. These settings work great with my voice and mic. Everyone says don't touch a thing, you sound great. 73
Thank you so much, I never knew this I'm a license ham since January 18 this year and I'm learning so much from you I'm so grateful. Greetings from the Netherlands 73
Happy to help!
Just saying thanks for your efforts in helping those of us with lesser experience.
My pleasure!
I reset my microprocessor.
Needed to watch it again, nice job!
just wondering why, when it's obvious that when using your soft touch pen, it keeps your auto focus from focusing on your hand instead of the narrow cylinder of the pen and the radio screen (frustrating), a little more on the fly self editing, seeing as you are making plenty of videos and it's plain to see you use the pen for just that purpose. just saying... I've watched most of your FT-991A videos and thank you I've learned so much more and quicker than if I had to look up everything in the manual and you really do such a much better job of explaining each function and items being addressed. thank you. Please don't be offended by my seemingly petty remark and keep up the good work!
Thanks for the note - While I'm a pretty fair Ham Tech guy, I'm not a camera guy. I've increases my F-Stop which gives me a greater depth of field and I've also changed to a manual focus rather than auto. All part of the learning curve.

Great video. The settings you made are for the original stock microphone I assume. I spent many months to get the same results you did but with different settings which match the Heil Gold Elite microphone.
Tom, Thank you for another useful video. I found this video while looking for a way to make my voice sound natural on a 2m repeater. 73, K8STU
Glad it was helpful!
full quality work 👌
Thanks. That helps a lot!☘️👍
This helped me since there's little info in the Yaesu FT-991 Op Manual about these settings adjustment or how they affect voice quality. And limited info on how "Proc" and "Mic-Eq" interaction.
Using a soft pointer would help us see the screen on the last things you were showing. Next time I'm sure you'll take care of that. Thanks again!

Nice job,
Thanks!
Very useful! Great video.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Spot on 😀
Thank you!
Good evening Tom. I always find your videos very interesting, especially on the FT991A because I have one myself. My problem is that when making the settings as you described, I noticed that from 96 watts up to the maximum power of the FT991A (100 watts), I have the ALC indicator which goes back down to about 1/3 of its value with the MIC-EQ both “on” and “off”. On the COMP everything is normal (set between 5/7) with or without MIC-ON. On the other hand, on the PO indicator, the power is normal (checked with the BIRD 43). For information I have an MD-100 stand microphone. Do you have a solution to my problem or is this normal? Kind regards 73. Joël/F8MGW.
1/3 ALC is perfectly reasonable, but play with your mic gain and see if that helps.
@@ND3NYes Tom! I must be stupid, I hadn't thought of that. Hi. Now it works. Thank you again, and treat us again with your very explicit videos. 73. Joel/F8MGW.
Parabéns, o meu ficou top de audio 73´s.
Is it true that female voices work better on the radio
Hi Taylor…. Not for any technical reason. However, if the band is filled back to back with male voices that all sound the same, that isn’t an unusual occurrence. But if there is an occasional female voice, that is, unfortunately, a fairly rare happenstance. So that will get attention and the female voice will get more attention. The same thing can happen with a child’s voice or any thing else that makes a voice unusual. If there’s a pile up with a DX station or even a POTA activation, the calling station will hear the different voices trying to get attention, and will pick up on the difference and call them back, often with asking for the YL to call.
DUDE!!! I heard a guy on 10m just the other day.... it was REALLY disappointing because he was +30 over 59.... and IPO, ATT, NB, DNR, etc etc could not clean up his voice. I couldn't even understand his call sign.
That's why I recommend that folks who don't know how to properly set up their compression - shouldn't be using compression...
If you cant hear him he cant be 5 och the scale...
@sa0bmc haha that's true. He wasn't 59, he was 0 readable and 30 over s9
Thanks for your help Ke4hpq 73s
