Glenn once again you amaze me, how your mind takes an fairly established procedure and simplifies down to nothing!!!! I firmly believe that you could make a pocket watch out of six moving parts LOL KEEP THEM COMING
I don't know why, but I'm always so blown away at how insainly clean all your work comes out. Everything always looks so slick, and crisp, and not worked to death. A pleasure to watch you work. Also, how's the blacksmith bird been?? Haven't seen it in any videos in a while!
I think the way my forge is running (neutral) and the fact that I don't work at very high heat helps keep my workpieces smoother. Birds have been around everyday but the blacksmith bird has taken a break. But that happens from time to time and he always reappears. That's my good buddy... Hope you had a Merry Christmas.
that came out really nice! it looks like it holds those hammer heads really effectively. I really love the style of your tongs-the shape and the surface finish, both they're simple, and something about the balance between the length, the curves, and the thickness of the stock is really nice.
I think some other styles may hold better that this pair but this style is simple and versatile. And holding from the sides allows me to hammer the hammer head top without interference from the tong jaws. Anyway, glad you like my tongs and I appreciate your taking the time to comment.
@@gstongs makes sense. I guess other styles hold the corners, or make use of the eye? I'm not very knowledgable, unf. I'll be looking forward to seeing these in use, anyway.
What a great video, Glen. You're way of forging and explaining the small details on fit and performance are really appreciated. Thank you so much for another great vid. Happy New Year!
Another useful pair of tongs to make! Thanks! You show many techniques with which I am unfamiliar. I have a platen on my bench, but I am astonished that I haven’t thought of having different diameters and, more importantly, different heights.

Fantastic work, as usual. How do you keep everything rust-free despite storing and using your tools in an outdoor and more importantly, rainy environment? I ask because I'm still deliberating as to how exactly I'm going to execute my own setup, as my only option for forging will be outdoors and the more I am able to leave outside the easier it will be.
I think just daily use helps keep rust at bay. Plus, I often rub my tools down with oil and store most tools out of the weather as best as possible. Thanks.
So would you normally choose to use 5/8" 17mm? I do like that style...being a rank beginner it makes up fast and easy and serves a purpose. Not that I'm lazy just unskilled and under tooled. Sheepish grin 🤗 Yes it's still me even though I didnt throw a funny at u today. 🙏blessed days sirSir Crawford out 🧙♂️
V bits would definitely hold better. But this flat style (holding by sides) allows me to hammer the top of the stock without the tong bits getting in the way at all. And it makes grasping the stock from inside the forge a little easier. Thanks.
it's a custom one he designed himself. he said he heat treated his first one himself, but I think this one was heat treated by the same shop that shaped it.
Thanks for replying - you're correct. Heat treating that first anvil was really something - would have made a great video and reinforced that I've got a few screws loose, heating a 150 pound block of steel on a balcony...
cleanest tongs on the web. good job as always.
Thanks for sure.
Damn the cleanest blacksmith setup I’ve ever seen!

Glen, you sure do have making tongs down to a science. Great job!
I've made enough tongs for sure. And based on that, I should be even better... Thanks and hope you had a Merry Christmas.
i like the brass accents you put on your tongs with the wire brush that is a cool look for them
nice touch with the brass brush. I like how crisp your touchmark comes out.

what size hammer stock u use 13/4 by 2 inch?

I normally use 14mm so only one millimeter more than this stock here but that one mm really make s difference. Thanks Daniel.
Hey Glen- are you going to make those for sale? I could use a pair or two.
I might offer this style for sale depending on the size(s) needed. Thanks John and hope you had a Merry Christmas.
Very nice Glen, just wondering why not make some V bit tongs to hold that square stock?
V bits would definitely hold better. But this flat style (holding by sides) allows me to hammer the top of the stock without the tong bits getting in the way at all. And it makes grasping the stock from inside the forge a little easier. Thanks.
What is the round disc on the end of your anvil?
That would be a magnet to cut down on ring.
Where do you get that bending jig
Look on his website, he makes and sells all this stuff
The bending jig is my own design. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your helpful reply.
What size square stock do you use to do the flattening of the boss area?
That piece of steel is 1&1/4" x 1" - medium carbon steel. Thanks.
Nice simple build there Glen. Are you using mild steel stock?
Yes, I only use mild steel for my tongs. Thanks for watching.
