This game manages to displease both SR 1&2 players and SR 3&4 players simultaniously which is genuinely amazing they got both saints row generations to band together to shit on this game.

There is a fine line between quirky fun and cringe. The OG Saint's Row worked because the main cast were a group of good friends but didn't hide that they are ABSOLUTE PSYCHOPATHS. The villains were also ABSOLUTE PSYCHOPATHS but they had friends and family.
There is tragedy and sadness in Saint's Row, but they were the result of consequences. As a result, the funny quirkiness worked in balance with how dark the games can get. In other words, the main cast were capital G Gangsters and lived a life of crime.
Can you say the same for this cast? Where they literally sip wine, talk about capitalism and student loans? Saint's Row 2 had missions where you'd literally throw shit everywhere, and that game had a more nuanced and in-depth criticism of Capitalism than this game.
That is the most accurate saints row can be described
Exactly, people that say "Saints row never had a story" are full of shit, 1 and 2 have pretty basic but pretty grounded stories with enough dark humor and actual dark and depressing tones all wrapped with actual smart criticism towards capitalism and gang culture.
not only that but the cast werent one note, Gat, was a crazy rambo killer, but he knew when to push and when not to, he also spoke with his gf giving him a reasonable loving person side, Gat was the guy who was crazy to storm the battlefront with a supersoaker, but smart enough to take cover and plan the attack first. the reason why gat is loved is cause hes crazy and smart giving reason why he can surivive such a world for so long, the key reason for him being loved is that he had a no f's given attitude, one of his best scenes is him on trial and he just calmly tells the judge to F off. you cant say you didnt like him cause he was competant
I'm convinced the people who like this game aren't real people
@@jorgeloredo100 SR1, tackles crime, how a normal citizen gets affected by crime, joins a gang and goes from passive to actively taking down gangs, to bring peace into the streets, SR2 story is that cops/corpos, were using the saints to get rid of the gangs to allow themselves to control of the citizens, that the new gangs are used by corpos and are immune from the laws due to cops making them the neccessary evil. where SR1 was saying how crime can affect society and ppl will join gangs to bring peace or revenge, SR2 was about how higher powers politics and business can control streets indirectly. the story was great, its in 3 that it turns out the world is full of criminal empires like in 2, and saints go against one, so it just seemed like cash grab and not really pushing the story just trying to make a game and sell, 4 just went wacky af and while gameplay mechanics is the most fun its also the lowest note in story for the SR

This was Volition's chance to shine. The perfect time for them to give us a new urban open world. GTA 6 is still far off. Many people (including me) are worried about its direction. This reboot could've sealed the deal for SR to get back into the fight and be a strong rival against GTA. If they had hit this out of the park, this franchise would've gone strong even into the future.
Instead we got this. And as a big fan of SR to the point of jokingly saying I'm "representing" with a friend whenever we wear anything purple in other games or even in real life, I am absolutely disappointed. I don't see the Saints coming back from this one. Maybe as a mobile game or a skin in Fortnite, who tf knows.
I despise this game with an unbelievable passion, they could’ve made a game that re-defined a genre that has grown stagnant and instead ruined literally everything from the original series instead of even trying to make improvements. This series is unfortunately dead in the mud and it’s sad that it’s the truth. If they just took a look at other series such as the Yakuza series to learn how to balance seriousness with craziness alongside taking the core gameplay of older SR games and expanding upon that alone and we would’ve had an amazing reboot. Alas, this isn’t the case and never will be. SR4 was the last decent SR with the last great being SR3. Such a waste of a great series.
this broke my heart. I also say i'm reppping when I wear purple. SR is why it's my favourite colour. I grew up with fun whacky gmeplay where my OC makes goofy one liners and roasts the shit outta people. I miss SR so much. I hate knowing this is the end of the only true GTA competition.

They got Saints Row, one of the wildest stories in any series, with insane over the top characters and lowbrow over the top comedy, and gave them to a team of hipster college students.
It's all that needs to be said.
I loved Saints Row 3, it was a very fun sandbox game to play for a while between games without having to spend a lot of time thinking, and, the best I can hope for this game, is that maybe, one day, Saints Row will go back to that formula, be good, and make fun of this piece of digital trash.
What they don't get is that the series was founded on a fundamental. Telling a gripping story with cinema-worthy writing and directing, while giving the players the offerings and freedom to do more absurd things outside of the storytelling.
Things started to take a turn when they decided that blending some of the absurdity to buff-up story plots and sequences was the way to evolve the series. 3 still told a decent story, but was executed in bombastic ways that felt like they belonged outside of it.
4 went south as a Saints Row. There was some series closure in the (sprinkled) main story missions, but the overall plot just murders the fundamental storytelling.

The developers literally had step by step instructions on how to make a new saints row game from over a decade of feedback from the fans, and they somehow made the worst. Is it narcissism on the part of the developers thinking the fans are stupid and don't know what they're talking about, or just incompetence, or malice?
my guess is the director didnt gaf and wanted to make the game similar to the older ones for the same vibe.. but for some reason without improving on it. the beginning of the game was bad in a fun way in the beginning, but then you kinda realize that this game is actually dogshit 😂😂
I mean, in all fairness as a developer you don't want to just do everything your players tell you to do. But from what little I read, the developers seemed totally full of themselves and completely delusional. Judging from the state of the game, I'd also say incompetence played a key role as well.
Never listen to fans. Fans have no idea what they're looking for. The issue is the developers have no passion or care. The developers themselves should be the biggest fan of the product, that's why this has no soul, nobody cared what they're making

Right? This is what Saints Row had over Grand Theft Auto: the true freedom to be totally unapologetic and truly satirical in its references to popular culture and the state of the world during its time. It was always a satirical parody of the times, not ever a "gangster simulation". Even GTA comes nowhere close to being a gangster sim. For those who expected it to be, you have Mafia and The Godfather to experience true organised crime in all of its video game glory.
The reboot is satirical, absolutely, and it does make fun little jokes when it's being self-aware. However, it's too safe. Saints Row is no longer unapologetic (they abbreviated Freckle Bitch's diner and renamed Rim Jobs to Jim Rob's, like bruh) which is where Volition lost me.

I remember back when games were actually finished when they came out and they were consistently good. At what point in time did almost the whole industry seemingly agree to make it look like creating an actual good game was an impossible task. Games are important to me and the decline in the industry genuinely makes me sad.

@@ThinWhiteLuke even if that was the case how would that stop them from making good gameplay

"Vision trumps graphical fidelity."
Fucking thank you. Some of my favorite games of all times are either outdated graphically by now or look like absolute ass by intention.
Outdated graphically is not the same as bad graphics. For instance, Shadow of the Colossus is outdated by being a PS2 game, but it still looks good and miles better than a new Pokémon game, because they made the most of the limitations
@@aceman0000099 Yeah but some kids these days can't be asked to play games like that because "it looks so bad".
Meanwhile I'm over here playing Cruelty Squad being like, "...What's your point, ya spoiled brat?"
@Pulsar *deep inhale* Okay I'm gonna put my biases in check for a moment (I do not like modern war shooters for various reasons) to point out that you appear to have missed the point of the statement.
"Vision *trumps* graphical fidelity". At no point did I say "graphical fidelity does not enhance the presentation of a vision".
Your Battlefield game could have looked like complete ass and still have been one of the best in the series on the merits of its gameplay and sound design alone. I am not saying that good graphics cannot enhance an already enjoyable experience. I AM saying that if a person cannot enjoy solidly built gameplay because the graphics were not the best that could be provided or made in the HD era of gaming than, yes, that person is a spoiled brat and I will die on this hill. Not every game is made by a major studio that can carve their game from the shaved gold dust of God's holy throne, and if they can and still remember that they have to make an actual GAME than that's all the better for the experience, obviously.
I would be hard pressed however to think of a game with good core gameplay mechanics that becomes unplayable due to a visual element of the game. I'm sure I could think of one given time, such as something that overuses bloom and lighting mechanics, or failing to use visual cues properly, but that again falls more into the category of "vision" and subsequent failure of said vision than it does "graphical fidelity". Off the top of my head there's only one hypothetical example of how poor visuals would ruin a gameplay experience with good core mechanics to me, and that would be if the visuals in question are so chunky and muddled that reading what the player is supposed to react to becomes nigh impossible. Alternatively, expecting the player to react to too much visual input which isn't diverse enough to be discernable.
Daikatana may be a good example. Even Daikatana has redeeming factors I'm willing to appreciate despite the models looking like jagged play-doh, and the fact that the first several levels of the game are such a visual mess all I remember is brown and bright bloody green. What ruins that game is the fact that 3/4 of the game is a glorified escort quest written by a man with too much vision, ironically. Limitations of both gameplay AND graphics can be overcome by vision, so long as there is a unified goal to the presentation of the experience. People will feel that love and dedication, and try to fix what they can for years to come. What limited that game was not the ugly graphics but rather the overreliance on an ally AI that simply wasn't possible to program at the time, meanwhile the player movement and gun mechanics were actually solid because they were made by a bunch of the people responsible for Doom and Quake. This is why one of the most infamous games in gaming history still has a dedicated deathmatch community. When the vision of a thing fails however, the entire project goes down with it, regardless of the redeeming qualities therein.
Lower the resolution and poly count of a good game and it's still a good game that looks slightly worse. Raise the resolution and poly count on a bad game and it is still shit. If you can actually have your cake and eat it too, good for you, but that doesn't mean a game that looks bad cannot still be leagues better than a game that looks good. I'm gonna take this a step further and say vision can trump programming limitations as well, as long as there is genuine love put into the project and vision is willing to meet practicality halfway.
You can like good graphics all you want, but not being able to enjoy something without them does, in fact, make you spoiled. Not every good game is high profile enough that it is reasonable to request the developers remaster it visually for the modern age, and as the Resident Evil Remake series has proven it is updates to core gameplay mechanics that go significantly further in re-achieving the original vision in the modern day. REmake 1 was nice visually, while REmake 2 fantastically transfers a good story into mechanical gameplay that is genuinely more suspenseful than anything the PS2 era could have achieved. That has nothing to do with how good the game looks. Destroy All Humans 2: Reprobed is coming out in a few days, and the first Destroy All Humans: Reprobed put significant effort into smoothing out the mechanics for the modern day and providing a few quality of life improvements, because they knew just tarting it up and making it look good wouldn't be enough. The gameplay quality must meet or exceed the quality of the visuals or the visuals do not matter.
Tl;dr "It looks bad" is not a valid excuse when "it feels good".
@Pulsar I literally had to look up what "gatekeeping" is to make sure it meant what the word sounded like it meant since the context in which you are using it doesn't imply what it sounds like. I don't think that word means what you think it means, because I fail to see how I'm limiting or controlling access to anything. Unless you somehow interpreted me wanting people to appreciate substance over style as me trying to tell people what they are and are not allowed to spend their money on, which would frankly be reaching for a reason to insult me.
I also now greatly resent you for insisting on continuing to use fucking Battlefield as an example when I made it clear I do not like this style of game in the first place. In fact it is my most hated genre of video games and the very reason WHY I decry the importance of a focus on graphics, but okay FINE since you insist.
Guns in later installments feel lazier, even too easy to use at ranges they shouldn't be applicable in balanced gameplay. They also removed the ability to shoot holes in doors which makes camping in houses easier to foil without countersniping or explosives. Additionally trench warfare will always lend well to a competitive shooter setting since it provides solid cover that can easily be foiled by a grenade. Speaking of, I appreciate BF1 taking the time to program actual craters in the ground from explosives which is strangely lacking from later installments. It also seems as though attention to detail was sacrificed in V as by all accounts there is less dedication to accuracy to the setting, and 2042 is nonsense that takes place in a hypothetical future so I'm not even touching that. I will observe that futuristic gadgets feels like the Assassin's Creed issue of adding in too many ways to kill a person that no one asked for. The colors also feel washed out at this point, and both games seem to have sacrificed something or another for the sake of following the battle royale trend. I'm not a multiplayer person however, so I'd rather address the story. A primary reason why I am adverse to these types of games it due to the romanticizing of warfare, and BF1's story is largely described as "dark" as apposed to "cool" which I take as a good thing.
So BF1 is also regarded by fans (at least in comments I'm seeing) as better mechanically because of an emphasis on balance without adding superfluous details/options which do not enhance an experience, and the better graphics are a bonus that only serves to enhance an already solid experience. Not to mention a more grounded campaign. So, none of what you said disproves what I said about how BF1 would still be regarded well if it had lower texture quality and poly counts, unless you want to actually elaborate on how the later games are mechanically superior in your own words instead of pointing me to someone else's opinion.
I also find it a very interesting decision that you would direct me to the review of a game by someone who actually seems to *share* my mentality regarding these things, that being that sometimes popular things are only popular because people aren't cultured enough to know better and simply eat the fanciest looking thing put on their plate. He's not salty about it like I am, but the popularity of Red Dead 2 only seems to add credence to my calling people who only want to enjoy things that look good "spoiled brats". You even blatantly admit that most reviews agree with the sentiment that Red Dead 2 is a shallow experience not worthy of the praise it gets from the general public, and you think this is proving your point that graphics are worth fan dedication? You and the general public can be entitled to your opinions, but sometimes your opinion is objectively wrong and you just don't want to hear it. That's the same reason people got mad at Charlie here for saying this game here looked like shit upon the gameplay trailer, cause they saw something shiny on their plate they wanted to eat it up like good unquestioning dogs. In this particular instance though the icing on the cake isn't distracting enough to ignore how little substance is in this Saints Reboot.
I guess taste doesn't matter in the face of broad appeal though. That buffet for the eyes is all most people care about, which is why it's so great that the vast majority of major game releases focus on giving us as little of the actually interactable and dynamic game experience as possible and instead focus on "look at how cool this thing is, now give us your money". It's this kind of mentality that is the reason why unique and interesting ideas never make it to the AAA market anymore, and all we get out of major publishers is the same tripe wheeled out year to year with a different, shinier paintjob, which demands more and more crunch time from poor developers who just want to go home, have dinner, and sleep for once.
Tl;dr You are simply part of the problem as to why the major gaming market has been suffering from lack of diversity and creativity, and so many people being a defender for shallow games that look good is why the Saints Reboot is allowed to exist in the first place.
It’s crazy how they made the first two games, as well as 3, and then every subsequent release from Volition has gotten worse and worse over the years. Agreed. The writing staff was definitely concerned about offfending new players but by that extension they drew in criticisms from the old ones that own every game (like me). Also I'll argue that the Saints Row storyline was never really good, it was always mediocre. But it's the way the story plays out that became their niche; for Saints Row it isn't about the destination it's the journey. It's hard seeing how well the formula worked in The Third, and how underwhelming this one seems after coming so far in the franchise. The problem with gaming these days is that it became mainstream. The innovative companies of the day with small teams of passionate developers went public and taken over by corporate overlords who's main objective is profits for the shareholders.
As a result, we're getting rushed, mass produced, uninspired, focus group tested, cookie cutter products that attempt to emulate what was the best-seller last year.
That's why most games, movies and shows all feel very similar and (most of the time) dull anymore.
They're just going through a checklist for mass appeal in an attempt to maximize sales. There's little to no risk taking anymore. Sure, you'll see a glimpse of passion or something unique that the developers managed to keep in the product but they're ultimately drowned out by the excessive, "kids these days like this, right?" BS that upper management forces through.
And this is also why most of the best titles these days are coming from indie developers.

Saints Row 4 was the perfect send-off. it was funny, gameplay was engaging, it balanced being superpowered without making the president OP, and most importantly, it had good characters that grounded the obviously ridiculous premise of the game. in the end, it's a bunch of friends, nuanced characters, hanging out. reboot saints don't even feel like real people, much less people i can endure interacting with in a videogame.
I hate 4's story, but character wise your not wrong. They still felt like actual people at times, this thing isn't a game, let alone a Saints Row game. It's just a bad cash grab.
@@hossdelgado626 They didn't feel like actual people though, the whole point of SR 3 and 4 were to make absurd characters that are interesting.
@@kenz2756 Each character had flaws, interests, their own objectives, and a focus for their desires. Each character had things they specialized in or a lack of like Pierce struggling to find his place and his feelings of it. Even the almost completely asinine big hulk man had interests and was proven to be somewhat interesting. I won't say they were fleshed out as well as they could have been, but in the case of SR3, they were characters and not cardboard cutouts. We all love to go on about SR1 and 2. 2 for good reason but 1 had barely any characterization or purpose to some of the actions, where as everyone in two had purpose and a goal. Then SR3 built off of 2, and while not perfect, the effort was there. Then in 4 everyone got a body redesign, their personalities neutered, the plot murdered and Gat being put back in pointlessly (besides fir fans, their was no reason and it made no sense) Gat died in 3 because they needed new blood and he while an awesome character, was shown to be burnt out from the ordeal with Aisha his near death. They put him down in a way he would actually act and made it memorable, they used it to show there was stakes, a reason to take these new factions seriously. Then 4 goes, welp aliens got him before he died and he's been alive the whole time... because... ummmmmmm... hey guys it's Gat! Gat is back guys. TLDR; I don't agree about SR3, but SR4 is a pile of bullshit with a whipped topping of dog shit on top.
Character wise for Sr4, they exist. Take a side line to the bullshit though, forgot it when writing the big rant paragraph. My bad for forgetting the whole point being made.
@@hossdelgado626 That's beside the point. I mean that they're not like actual people, they are very absurd in their actions and demeanor.
Saints Row 2 was the peak of this franchise. Such a great game with a memorable soundtrack but the rest have paled in comparison.
false. the third was amazing.
Yeah, I don't quite get the reverence for Saints Row 2. It was good but it was ostensibly doing San Andreas because GTA IV was such a buttoned up experience. Fine for the time but The Third will be talked about for decades.
Third was the best one imo
Whichever (that's probably not a real word is it) game had superpowers and had you kill aliens was really cool. That one and 2.

Yeah John Saint Row honestly rivals Ahab going for Moby Dick in my eyes, his masterful subtle Omoge being obvious in retrospect, with Ahab it was harpooning Moby Dick, for John it was getting them in the blowhole with a perfect smack that made us all pucker our lips and cry a tear of sympathy. Emotional stuff, can't wait to see how they turn John's Muddy Rudder Romp into the Selacious Space Sojourn, then maybe we'll get to see Saucy Susie and Melvin from Accounting take on Satan (read Sah-Tahn) using the power of Jack Sparrow, Lord Farquad (but in goth drag), and the part where John us shown having tried getting them out using a challenge of mega billiards hyper 4th dimensional Tarot cards poker (now including Dante from the Devil May Cry series)
Watching Saints Row go from crazy open world, with sup par gameplay, but absolutely amazing missions, good story with great characters and silly activities to this is just depressing.

I think the worst thing about this is the gameplay, not only is it as ancient as fossils its just straight up a click and shoot game. Ive seen roblox games have more advanced third person shooting mechanics, and more fun gameplay thwn this bullet sponge nerf war mess.

Also, the impressive part, the vehicle flattening mechanic, is hot new tech from Saints Row: The Third. An 11 year old game.
The fact that they didn't want to offend people and decided not to call the car upgrade shop "Rimjobs" tells you they strayed off the path.

Saint's Row was in such a unique position to be one of the best open world games of all time. Could you imagine if this game was a giant piece of meta commentary about the industry and franchises growing older? What about if instead of cringey 'how do you do, fellow kids' garbage, we had characters more in line with actual youth that try and bring the Saints back to what they used to be about before they sold out then realize that it's pointless because things need to evolve. Lean into the zany minigames, make missions be more experimental, poke fun at the kind of crap shoveled out by Ubisoft and really make the game stand out as something different. Shelve the trash driving and shooting for more interesting stuff without the juvenile humor and cookie cutter industry standard dogshit. They could have made this game one of the best, but they lacked any kind of creative awareness to do so. It's sad.
WhileI do agree with you, I truly believe the staff they hired for this project would be completely out of their depth if that was the intended direction they wanted to go. Just utterly incompetent and unable to make that kind of story.
Best openworld game in the world? Huh? How?
@@atomosvrial1708 It had a chance. Saints Row 3 sorta shot themselves in the foot by being TOO zany. Saints Row 2 was basically a funnier, more fun San Andreas with better guns.
It WOULD be. But they don't have good writers. The problem with 'going woke' is not the pandering so much as them focusing too much on pandering rather than crafting good story with compelling characters
