'Flying Dutchman Stats: Opened 1977 closed, 1988. Largest ride of its type, only 3 models made Z78 Zyklon Pinfari. 70' high. First drop 50'. 3240 feet of track.
I once sat on this ride next to my uncle. He was a big guy and I was a twig at 8 years old. I remember it felt like I was going to fly out of my car's lap bar as we went down the drops on this coaster. My uncle literally had to hold me down lol
7 years old I was afraid to try it, my mom's coworker brought her two kids, one of them a girl who I thought was really nice and really cute. All day and evening she was coaxing me to try it. Finally did it with about an hour until closing. Rode it repeatedly until 10pm. Conquering that at that age and in that situation, one of the best feelings I can remember having.
I never got to ride it bec I was a chicken but I remember seeing it and watching people on it from the picnic pavilion. The paratrooper was right in front of it and the Ferris Wheel and Carousel.
Great ride, took me a while to get over my fear of heights but after that we rode it all the time. My brother and cousins would go on a Saturday and ride the go carts down buy the old castle gardens and then ride the Flying Dutchman. The good ol days. Never be a decade like the 80's again that's for sure.
My mom always told me that this ride had flown off it's tracks twice however found no documentation of it. Maybe just a rumor around the area since she lived near there at this time.
I was afraid to go on this. I went to the park a lot in the 1980's. Robert F. Ott and Harris Weinstein, former owners of the park before Cedar Fair passed away March 2007 and Oct 2014. A Chance Ferris Wheel was built on the site of this coaster in 1989. While Weinstein was the head of the park. I still miss Journey to the Center of the Earth. I rode Bucket O' Blood several times before the fire on Sept. 28, 1983. I went through Gold/Coal Mine before it closed in 1985. I rode Iceberg. I went through the glass house.
Rob Krasinski I heard that this ride closed down because of continuous maintenance problems. How true is that? Also, is it just me or does this coaster look like it took up much more space than the Ferris Wheel does now?
Maybe it did. I'm not sure if the candy shop was there when the Flying Dutchman was there through 1988. Or the carousel that they removed a while ago, and the Hershey's ice cream stand. Chance carousel that was by the candy shop was added 1986 but could have been in a different spot originally. The Chance carousel was removed a while ago.
I remember being a little girl, terrified of heights, and being left alone on a park bench while my parents and older sister went on this ride. Ah, the great, neglectful parenting of the early 80s… Once a back woman came up and asked if I was alone and I said no, my parents and sister were on The Flying Dutchman, I was afraid of heights so I had to wait on the bench until they were done in the ride. She seemed really concerned and asked if I minded if she waited with me until they got off the ride and I said I didn’t. We had a really nice chat, she was a very nice woman. I didn’t realize it then (I think I was 7) but she was watching out for me since my parents stupidly left me alone in a crowded amusement park where anything could have happened. My parents seemed a bit angry she was there with me, but I told them she had been really nice and was just waiting with me until they got off the ride. I think they thought she was a kidnapper. Actually she was the opposite. She was the Good Samaritan trying to prevent me from getting kidnapped because my parents were very neglectful where I was concerned. I still remember that woman fondly 43 years later. I doubt she’s ever thought of me, but I’ve thought of her every time I’ve gone to Dorney Park.
I remember when this arrived at Dorney park - when it was free to enter and buy tickets to ride....never liked it - was scary because it felt unsafe...rode it a few times, then never rode it again...
This park has some seriously bad history of removing good coasters. Nothing worse than the Schwarzkopf laser, and man hercules wasn't 1/2 as bad as people said yet they kept thunderhawk. They could've gotten GCI to retrack, or left it running and gotten it RMCed now if anything. Laser should definitely still be there, instead they got stupid stinger which is their first good removal. P.S. Yes I like hydra the revenge but they could've put it somewhere else. Hopefully they will get a solid GCI wooden coaster it'd be a better addition to add to the line up than a raptor.
OneAndOnlySound I hope they get a new coaster sometime in the future too. But I heard that this ride was removed due to continuous maintenance issues. *UPDATE 2024* Hello Iron Menace !
@@RB01.10 It's a pretty big ferris wheel that took it's place. I'm actually across the street from it right now looking at it as I'm typing this lol. The ferris wheel is about twice as tall as the Flying Dutchman was.
This ride put the park on the map for years been going since 75 thanks for the post.

I can't believe this video exists! Thanks so much for posting it!
My mom loved this ride but they have a similar version at Morris peer at wildwood New Jersey
I grew up going to Dorney throughout my childhood. This is still my all-time favorite wild mouse coaster. So bummed that it was removed.

May I use this footage in a video I'm making on Dorney Park's history? I will give you full credit.

Lol, I know those two guys on the unloading platform!! Good old days.
I had to walk down the lift hill on this once. The drops were sharp and fast, this was always worthy of an immediate re-ride.
Memory unlocked!
I loved this roller coaster!!

Oh yes I loved iceberg and the glasshouse.
Named for the PA Dutchman :)
I never got a chance to ride this.
Dude, this is some awesome vintage stuff! Why'd you wait till now to post it? It's a shame that this ride isn't there anymore!
Thank you for this video. Over the years I spent hours trying to look for footage of this ride. Thank you again
Let's take this down and replace with a ferris wheel- NOBODY

Thanks for posting! I really miss this ride. I think it's better than the Wild Mouse they have now.
Was this taken down cuz I don't remember this? Like if you live in Pennsylvania
Yeah it was taken down years ago and replaced with the huge ferris wheel.
@@Grimmsha72If I read correctly it was up from 1978 to 1988, being removed after the latter season .

yep waiting in line for scrambler in the middle of a field good times lol....oh and the whip classic
Thank you so much for this video! I was always much to frightened to ride it. Of course the year I decided to go on, it was gone!
Thanks for posting this :)

It's now the wildmouse
Frank Moyer This ride was removed after the 1988 season.
Wild Mouse opened back in 2000.

Not to mention the ferris wheel now sits where it was.
@@Grimmsha72 But it looked like it was a very large coaster.
It had to have taken up more than the Ferris Wheel location.

The guy said this is going to awsome and screams but it's one of the worst most boring roller coasters ever made.
You actually went on it? It looked very cool though.
Why didn’t you like it?
This is different than others of the same model. More drops. 🎢
