It’s all about balance, I still watch a few lux YTubers but I also watch several minimalist like Colourful Noir. The minimalist ones really helped me curb my obsessive shopping and helped me create a capsule wardrobe and bag collection. I was at a point where we had to build a room just to hold luxury bags, I realize now, for me that was excessive. I feel so much better now. I still follow and enjoy luxury tho, however I make more responsible choices.

Hi Deb! Another Deb here agreeing with you here. I think when you get to a “big age” post 50 you have a broader outlook on life including spending. Additionally when I was shopping IRL a lot in my late 20’s and early 30’s online shopping wasn’t around so there was not all that FOMO. Back then if you saw a bag or item of clothing being worn by a super model in Vogue or Elle you would fold the page and when the weekend rolled around you would physically go into the store and look for it and then maybe buy it. There was so much work and time involved with shopping and I do miss that. I found Caitlyn’s situation fascinating because I think she is a good example of how online shopping, and FOMO can sneak up on you especially now that they have all the instant pay as you go as well as other purchasing options that can really get the younger ones in trouble. Unfortunately we can all shop 24/7 now and that was never the case back in the day. But at the end of the day I just think you should watch the content you like and that resonates with you and yes creators can change and grow like any of us. Let’s be kind to each other no matter where we are in life and please people…stop criticizing and leaving negative comments on creators videos. If you do not like content just stop watching it.

Everyone is different. I only got into luxury bags in my late 40s. I am 52 now and I'm enjoying them. I always loved and collected fine jewelry but for some reason wasn't interested in buying expensive bags, so it's a new and refreshing thing for me. I guess, there's a right time for everything. Some people are getting into this lux world too soon and burn out too soon.

@@Michele_in_color I disagree that minimalism and luxury don't go together. People approach minimalism and luxury in different ways. For some the two may be mutually exclusive, but not for everyone.
For myself, I love luxury items and still consider myself a minimalist. I buy luxury but I am selective in what I buy.

Interestingly I don’t think I’ve seen any ‘preachy’ videos but there is often quite a hostile reaction to people like Colourful Noir who are into minimalism, which is a shame. Hi Deb,
Yes, I have stopped watching Colorful Noir, Caitlyn & the third (not sure who she is), but Shea Whitney is another one who has gone on to bigger and better things. It's hard watching some of those videos, because it makes me feel guilty about my bag obsession (as if something is wrong with me!) 😱😆🤣 Anyway, I watch you, Meredith, Lisa, and Dayle (Connor not so much 😆). As an American living in Vegas, it's something about the British and Australian accents that has me hooked to your channels. And I just love hearing Lisa's perspectives in NY. ☺️ I honestly believe the foreign accents in RUclips channels make them more appealing to watch. (You all sound so much more sophisticated than us!😂) It's very addicting. You have the most calm, soothing voice & are so polite but then stand your ground in a non-offensive way, which is a great skill to have, since it doesn't put people on the defensive or make them feel bad. Anytime you have a video up, I always watch it because it's like listening to a polite and sophisticated friend. Also, I believe a lot of people feel the same way. Americans love foreign accents, and even more so when talking about handbags! ☺️ So I think you could definitely talk about gardening & I would listen (just to hear your perspective in your British accent). 🥰💜💙🙏

It’s an interesting point. On the one hand I think people switched to minimalism because they reached a point where they realised they had too much and it was a way around it. I had so much stuff bought over a period of 5 years that I could never hope to use and realised I had to downsize. Therefore I no longer watched unboxings. Also I only got into YT because I was looking for reviews prior to purchase. I really like Eileen, she sweet and authentic and has evolved. I do believe she can be a minimalist by having just a few luxury purchases instead of lots. I love Benita Larsson so much. My last point is that people generally run out of ideas and things to talk about - much like real life. The more you know the people around you the more repetitive the conversation.

As I live in Central London I do see non stop Hermes tbh - beautiful but I started watching finance channels instead - this helped as I decided I would not purchase a Birkin for example until I owned my home outright / could walk in London happily with it (as I could afford it easily and insurance in case it got targeted). Awesome video! 👏👏👏 Thank you for your constructive, respectful addition to this conversation. It’s wonderful to see content creators change and evolve over time! We should be celebrating their growth and journeys. Like you said, we can choose what we watch and move on to other content creators that resonate more with us. IMO, I think most viewers don’t care if a creator changes over time *if that change is organic and authentic.* I think what really rubs people the wrong way is change based on trying to capitalize on trending topics (or trending aesthetics) that don’t feel authentic to that person.

RUclips provides the opportunity for people to talk about whatever they want, some will follow the money, others will just stay in their safe space. Some are looking for fame & fortune, others just want a place where they can chat about their interests once or twice a week and want nothing more from it.
The whole platform has grown, even luxury content creators have grown in numbers, there are far more people talking about it now than ever before.
I think people tune in initially for the topic, but stay for the personality. It’s a bit like a 📺 soap opera, you have to be invested/interested in that person to tune in every week and basically listen to a stranger give their opinion.

I think age plays into it a lot with a number of the original YTs now in their mid 30s, being passed over in favour of younger ones. They were never purchasing luxury, it was all gifted or sponsored and now those gifts are going to others they have had to pivot to different things to sell such as homewares or parenting paraphernalia. Still gifted or sponsored but things people in their main audience will buy lots of. Some are like a shopping channel disguised as a vlog but if YT is their sole income, then they will pivot because they’re a salesperson. That literally is the job of an influencer - to sell. LEM is home goods but leading into the ‘wellness’ sector, CN is knowledge (skillshare - mustn’t pay well if she’s going back to work p/t) and CP will probably head into ‘wellness’ too. I like people like you, Meredith and Dayle who don’t feel guilty buying a bag or more a month because it’s authentic. Amelia and Lisa in NY do struggle a bit with it but it’s interesting seeing where they’ll land in being comfortable. I guess I like genuine folk rather than business influencers.

It’s getting a bit yucky and seems strange to have such a strong obsession with constantly buying more. There is a lot of denial going on exactly like drug addicts display constantly looking for the next dopamine rush. Volunteer with your time to help others instead of the self absorbed behavior, this will make you feel good without the constant shopping. Love your channel ❤. I stopped watching Millen when she showed her true colors, I was so disappointed with her… I remember when she had that tiny closet and was doing her best to be creative with what she had etc. but when people show who they are you should believe them. In my opinion, nothing she does is authentic … it all comes with $$$$$. Caitlin has definitely found her groove and seems to be really vibing in her new space, but I don’t really watch her as it doesn’t suit me, and I get the impression from her that she thinks that way more people have shopping problems than actuality do. An experience bias maybe. As for minimalism… I’m exhausted with that trend and want nothing to do with it. Of course people can change, we are not static creatures, but as you said, it’s out choice whether we choose to …. Follow for lack of a more neutral term.

I don’t care about your personal issues - show me them bags!! 😅 I get that the economy isn’t great and the general vibes of doom and gloom are all around us but no matter what the economy is like there’s never a reason to spend thousand of dollars on handbags. We get it! Yet here we are and it’s what we love so why go on an apology tour or pivot?

Yep many people just want to see the bags!

I agree with what you say. I enjoy watching bag unboxings and comparisons. I am not interested in minimalism. There will always be new RUclipsrs who want to talk about bags and I will be happy to watch their content. On a personal note, I don't know why anyone needs 50 bags. I have 10 bags and 3 of them I don't even use.

Yes I think there are enough of us out there to keep this type of content going. 😂 yep none of us need 50 bags! We’ve gone beyond need x

Personally, I stopped watching everyone who shifted away from the original content. I'm here for the lux bags and jewelry and not for gardening or cooking. I also like true crime and history videos but that's another story. And I don't care about creators personal lives. I am here for the content. Actually, I don't even remember most of their names. I only recognize the face when I see it. To me they are all easily replaceable.

Some people get invested in the person and personality- some just want to see the bags. It’s all good x

I regretfully stopped watching Eileen. I really liked her but I was not interested in the minimalist thing (although I am one maybe) she was discussing. (I think she might be sliding back a bit). I want to see all the bags although I am probably not going to buy many of them. Knowledge is power. You are the perfect centre to me. Not too many bags. Not too few. I had to stop watching Caitlin as, to me, she was a true shopping addict and it made me uncomfortable. I've watch a few of her videos since she has changed gears but too preachy now, in my opinion. Lydia Millen apparently has one million subscribers yet her videos average 100,000 views so only one tenth of her subscribers watch her videos. I’ve heard that you can ‘buy’ subscribers? She may have one million subscribers but at the end of the day, she only gets paid for the 100,000 who actually watch her videos. Maybe people don’t watch her videos now and just forget to unsubscribe?

Not sure as her subscriber count has def gone up so people are still subscribing x

Take a look at “hair gate” and your eyebrows might hit your hairline. That ugly mess and the way she handled it turned me off her permanently, and I’d watched her on/off from the early days.

I have stopped watching quite a few RUclipsr luxury channels. Not all for the same reason, but a few of them (won’t name them) are so narcissistic and getting worse. When you’re rolling your eyes throughout the video, unfollow.

Yes I agree. I also felt that with certain channels. Eye rolling and getting wound up watching anything is time to switch off
