    It's really hard to "try" to lose fear when we are fearful. People always tell us not to fear, and fear is bad. But I used to have such a hard time losing fear because I was just "reacting" to the fear. So if we "notice" and "feel" the fear, instead of "reacting" to the fear ("Oh, I notice this feeling"), and know that fear is a brain's way of communicating us that there is either a real or perceived danger, then we can choose to tune into our body and environment to see if there is actually a true danger or not. If we feel fear from pain, discomfort, certain thoughts, or anxiety, we can say "Ah ha! It's my brain trying to protect me, but it's a false alarm (because I know what I have is TMS)," then the fear just dissolves on its own. Depends on our upbringing and circumstances, some of us are truly wired to be hypervigilant, and our brain is always in such a protective mode. But if we know that it's the brain doing it, and recognize there is no danger, AND practice calmly responding instead of reacting over and over (re-act, behaving the same way over and over to similar situation), fear will start to melt away on its own. This takes a lot of practice and I never thought I could do it, but after practicing this for a few months daily, even hourly, whenever fear surfaced, I was starting to get the hang of it, it seems. Another thing that really helped me is the concept of the brain's "volume knob." I think I learned this from "Tell me about your pain" podcast (Curable) one day, and by the way, it's a great podcast, so you should check it out. Some of us have our brain's volume knob turned up to 8, 9, or 10 because our brains got so hyper alert. When I heard this concept, I had an "Ah ha" moment. When your pain, discomfort, anxiety should be normally 2 or 3, yet the brain has learned to fear so much, it sends the signal that is 8, 9, or 10. Dan has a video about how a brain decides if something is a danger or not. So if your brain decided something is really dangerous, the brain will set the volume control at 8, 9, or 10. When I got this idea, my discomfort and anxiety reduced quite a bit because all of a sudden I felt like I "knew" what was going on in my mind/body, and was able to calm the level of my fear down. As Dan always says, "don't freak out." Such a great advice. Thank you so much!

All this caused me pain in my lower back that barely allows me to walk. Work stress also causes pain throughout my body. Your videos are very good! TMS should be re named simply "Fear pain", knowing that fear exits as a core component to negative emotions or reacts in many forms like, worry, angry, rage, hysterical ,anxious, being too carefully, need for approval, feeling upset or vulnerable are all examples related to fear . Knowing that fear is a very useful tool in making the right decisions, ensuring our safe survival is good to know . It should be accepted, embraced, even celebrated, which many people do when they watch a scary movie or go on a role coaster. Its crazy to think that the very thing that is there to protect us, feels so scary! . The point I'm trying to put across here is last night during a passive/still emotional discovery session, I felt vulnerable , anxious etc. I sat with it smiling , grateful that I was able to feel these things and that they were all mine and even beckoned more , my unafraid reaction to my feelings must have sent a signal to my brain that there was no danger here . I physically felt the pain path to my back temporarily switch off like a light switch ! . Now to apply this during the active/motional day , 'un- dangering' and owning my fears . In a nutshell, " Don't fear the fear ". 💗 u Dan !.

      Fear is the root cause of every disease. It is the cause of pain. And then we have the fear of having fear. Sometimes I feel fear, hence pain, and anxiety, and cannot find a cause. Maybe fear is caused by certain changes in the envoirment, or wheather,

    Dan I watched this today and also Fear is the fuel. My 8 out of 10 pain and resulting frustration and depression lifted after watching these two videos.
    I got up off the couch and cleaned and tidied up, I thought why not - it hurts on the couch so why not just carry on while it hurts to do housework. My pain level reduced to around a 4 and still is, which is bearable for me. I was also scared to use my hands/arms today as they started hurting a few days ago and I thought “oh god here we go another body part”. But today I laughed and said how bloody ridiculous and the pain or should I say “discomfort” massively reduced. Can’t wait to talk on the 21st 😀

    Great video. The ideas remind me of some statements from Lucinda Bassett who writes a lot of bad panic attacks and anxiety. She talks about anticipatory anxiety and walking or breaking through the wall of anticipatory anxiety because most of what you were fearing never comes to pass this is great for people who do have panic attacks and anxiety. She also talks about how thoughts can create the chemical reactions in your body and have a snowballing effect with the release of the adrenal cortical hormones and lactic acid Etc. This just increases the fight or flight feelings and if you realize it's just a chemical if you realize the anxiety and panic attacks were just chemical reactions you can realize that they can go away with just a change in your thought processes. Thanks again for a great video

    Dan Buglio, thank you for this great video - you are so calm and reassuring. It is so nice that you have done this to help others - I will now be watching the rest of your videos as I try to win this battle with chronic pain. I am in a constant state of red alert or fight or flight and am becoming almost a prisoner in my own home with this chronic pain ever spreading with family members who resent me and are aggressive and demeaning. So I avoid them and stay mostly in my room to avoid feeling the emotions that instantly increase pain. I now only have to see one of them ( 2 adult sons and husband who are so angry with me it makes me sad ) and my muscles go into spasm it's got that bad From what I understand from your I have to let myself feel these emotions without fear and my brain will slowly learn they will not harm me ? I have to get through the pain by reassuring myself etc ? I dread the pain. Thank you again, Amanda x pS 6 years ago I was still managing to work as a PT - strong and confident though with a worn out spine .

    • @PainFreeYou
      @PainFreeYou  5 лет назад +2

      My suggestion is not to view it as a battle with the pain. The pain is simply anger and aggression turned inward. Keep watching my videos. Let those around you know that what is going on with you is really the result of too much stress. And if they want you better, giving you more stress will just make things worse. The best thing they can do is calmly give you support. The best thing you can do is choose your reaction to them. Choose your reaction to the pain.
      To your question, yes - feeling the emotions and your brain will learn that the emotions are not dangerous. Just as important is to learn to NOT react and freak out about the pain or symptoms. While I know this is challenging, freaking out about, getting angry at or sad at the pain has never helped anyone. Shift your focus to what you want and away from the pain or symptoms. Choose to soothe yourself and calm yourself.

    • @PainFreeYou

      Absolutely. Especially when you view TMS as Too Much Stress. Being in the stress response (fight or flight) suppresses the immune and digestion systems and can allow symptoms called IBS to occur. Stressing out about IBS is stressing out about a stress illness and that's like pouring gasoline on a fire and wondering why it won't go out. You are in the right place.

      Hey Gayle, yes. If you are on such high alert, diving deep into emotions too fast can cause us to go in the wrong direction. With an overactive state of fight or flight, it is probably best to begin slowly and begin practices designed to turn down the volume of your stress and fight or flight response. Meditation, deep breathing, time in nature, observe your thoughts and begin to shift from fearful thoughts to more positive "I can" type of thoughts. Self talk matters. Notice when your thoughts are running away on you and shift. Watch my video called "HOW". It talks a lot about anxiety. ruclips.net/video/2IpqOeM7N0Q/видео.html
