Thank you Dan for the examples. think the biggest message of safety for me is not rushing or being pressured to rush through decisions, tasks,
Not hurrying taking my time makes a huge difference in my feeling of wellbeing. There are no tigers after me. 😂 feeling more present. Before it was hurry up so I can rest from fear symptoms. I am freaking out less- setting a peaceful boundary for myself in this area

Dan, you are amazing! You help me face everyday! I'm 71 years old and have suffered from TMS since adolescents. My husband of 49 years has been telling me all this time it's in my head. Ha! I always thought he was just being mean. He was right! Now that I'm retired since COVID....it's worse without the work distractions. I have spent a fortune on exercise and muscle release products. I've stopped the daily pain treatment and I'm trying so hard and your words are the perfect equipment I need to start enjoying my life without fears. It is WORKING! I've tried this before but did not have much success after reading all Dr. Sarno's books. I needed someone to talk to me who understands! Thank you for all you do!

How are you doing now Karen? It sounds like you've had these problems for 50-60 years, though maybe not so bad that you were disabled, since you were able to work. It would be encouraging to see someone who has been chronic for that many decades make it out of this. I've had it to a disabling point for close to 3 decades now. I try not to let that be more intimidating, but it kind of is. Most people who come out of this haven't had it near as long.

      Hi Karen,
Like you, I’ve had TMS on and off for most of my life and I’m 70.
Thankfully, there are times when it hasn’t been a problem.
I have a slightly different orientation towards the whole thing, though I am on board with what TMS practitioners, including myself, suggest.
I believe that because we’re a mind-body system, sometimes, especially when we have a lot of emotional material going on, those extra emotions have nowhere to go, so they become somatic.
If you’ve ever looked at the ACE study by Kaiser, you know that it’s common for anyone who had childhood trauma to have TMS symptoms.
The most important thing, in my opinion, is to not freak out.
I have found that reminding myself there’s nothing really wrong with me is the most important message, though certainly not the only helpful one.
Dan’s videos are incredibly helpful as they keep us on course.

@@saintejeannedarc9460I am right there with you. Have had chronic pain sickness and disability for 35 years. It’s all I really know. I have not worked since I was 20 years old and I’m 54 now. Thank God I received disability in my 20’s and I’m now married to a good provider because the pain and sickness have been severe since my teens. I have been diagnosed with everything from CFS to fibromyalgia to arthritis and have been prescribed every drug under the sun and have had close to 20 surgeries including hysterectomy, hip, and shoulders. It IS more intimidating when it’s been decades and decades. I’m trying to learn and be positive. God bless you.

Another somewhat “strange” message of safety might be watching videos of happy or relaxed animals! I’ve found that watching videos of happy dogs having fun, or making funny snoring noises while sleeping, conveys a message of safety to me (as weird as that sounds). I think seeing how carefree animals can be might be helpful in retraining our brains to be a bit more live-and-let-live like they are.

Child’s pose. Feels grounding. Moving my body parts in a mirror because I actually can’t see my pain. A reflection of me that doesn’t hurt. Rubbing my thumb and fingers together. Finger tips are soft, or gently caressing my face. Asking for strength from a higher power and surrounding myself with a warm golden light (a lot easier when I sit in the sun). Sitting by a river and visualizing my symptoms washing away.

Thankyou so much for your videos. I’ve been watching them most days to keep me on track. I’ve been doing nervous system work for a while but I realised how I was making it my whole life’s mission and now I see that that was keeping me stuck and feeling depressed as my life was so restricted and full of fear. It’s still a journey and I do use practices like brain retraining and somatic work for deeper trauma but I have found your short videos transformational, just the knowledge alone has relaxed my nervous system so much more. I have switched from focusing my whole days on ‘healing work’ to just doing practices when I need them but not being overly strict, and focusing the rest of the day on doing normal things that bring me joy. Like being social, pursuing my hobbies again of music and dance, I’ve even been working out most days and loving it - our bodies are so strong and capable!! Even though the journey isn’t perfect it’s so freeing to not feel controlled anymore. The idea of ‘don’t do too much’ that I have always heard in the CFS and POTS community - even in mind-body spaces - always caused so much confusion and fear. But now because of this knowledge combined with somatic experiencing and daily brain retraining etc for the past week I’ve had so much energy which is huge for me ( healing from TMS symptoms and one of the main ones was chronic fatigue). I can’t believe how much I’ve been able to do. I’ve worked more than usual, done a lot of exercise, socialised and just normal fun and life stuff. I now believe that like you said, focusing too much on healing is what keeps many of us stuck. Just being able to enjoy life again has been enough to lift secondary depression, give me hope and in turn give me that life energy back. Thankyou so much for all that you do. And I hope anyone else reading this is as encouraged as I am🎉.

Really late, but there's actually good reasoning for that. Cat purrs can literally heal. They purr at certain frequencies that can both calm anxiety and the likes, plus heal the body of certain issues. Of course they'll purr the different frequencies at different times, depending on their mood or personal issues, but a happy cat on the lap usually purrs happily, which is what helps the anxiety. It's definitely one of the best benefits of having cats.

Creating that sense of safety its really essencial. There are some examples that it makes sense, but others that you´ve shared, that can reeinforce repression (by pretending that its all ok). I would say that its not so much of what you do, but the inner attitude that you have while your are doing something. One can be mechanical and the other more conscious. Thank you for your sharings!

Hi Dan! Thanks so much for your videos, I’m finally starting to understand this concept of consistent messages of safety to my brain.
One thing that has been helping me a lot is typing out a page each day of how I would like my life to feel and look like. I write it from the point of view that it’s happening now. I’m sure to be very descriptive. It’s kinda like rewriting the script of my life literally. I begin each page with “I woke up today feeling so good, refreshed and excited to start another beautiful day”
I’m on day 4 of rewriting my life script but it’s crazy I can actually feel a difference when I wake up now.

I laughed when you said ‘don’t check after trying a ‘fix’ whether it ‘worked’ . I’ve done that each time I’ve tried something out. 😂 Thanks for this post. I’m learning something valuable, each day and will try on this new language to myself instead of letting the fear ride roughshod a lot of the time.

Came across your videos at the perfect time, man. Not due to physical pain until recent days, but a history of childhood trauma and processing a recent break up from a long term relationship which involved DV. I've internalised so much psychological stress over the years, and always at high pressure jobs too, in the past week my kidneys started to feel like they're on fire and I know this is from years in fight or flight, catastrophising and feeling unsafe in general. Body is giving me a massive warning it can't sustain the way I've been operating. Here to learn to hopefully reverse and learn better habits.

Agreed Dan! You are amazing and wonderful. I have not been around so much in the past six months or more because I was feeling really good. I seem to have aggravated something in my low back last weekend and it’s been really sore and it was debilitating at times, and at times seemed like it was improving. Yesterday my husband said “you need to get back to Buglio”.
    That’s my new mantra -
    back to Buglio,
back to Buglio. So this morning I walked with your 24.messages of safety. As always a great reminder of the basics.
I so appreciate you - your data, and your sense of humor with the bug today, tractor boy, helicopter boy, etc. Thank you again,
    Donna

Wonderful video! I needed that today. A couple of my favorite safety messages are walks in nature, smiling in nature and tuning into my five senses, laughing with others, yoga, self hug, affirmations to myself, positive journaling-writing down happy thoughts and the good things that have happened to me during the day, singing and playing piano, and listening to lively music especially after work or when I’m commuting. Beast of Burden has been my go to jam this summer 😊😄 thanks Dan for all you do!

I am amazed to find your channel Dan! I have never heard of TMS before.
Years ago, when I was in an emotional storm, I was able to identify my over all pain as despair. Once in a despair storm I asked to myself, what can I do? The words ‘just smile’ came into my head. I took the message seriously and worked hard at smiling. Very hard. And I finally got better. I never forgot that important and simple message. Just Smile. 😊
I have a message taped to my mirror. ‘Clear of Fear’ I still have to work at this daily.
I gave up on therapy years and years ago. It never helped.

Love this list, especially ‘Stop Fixing My Life and Start Living it!’ Best advice ever. Right now, I don’t completely agree with telling my brain ‘nothing is wrong’. I have arthritis in my knees. I tell my brain, “I’m okay” rather than ‘nothing is wrong’ because that’s more factual.

What you say does make a lot of sense - thank you - the body takes over with the horrible symptoms - and they do take your attention - and remembering the breathing, I notice mine goes so shallow and it feels like a big effort to get that breathe in. Also the self help - doing it because it just feels good, rather than fixing stuff, I notice that I have been doing this too.

What a wonderful perspective. Years ago I posted a message by my sink, Breathe and Smile. And although I tried everything in-between to “fix” myself, until I found this beloved work, and my intuition was pointing me I never really understood the brain-body connection, this is a whole new world and what a trip it is, this is fun to do, now that I understand and acknowledge it’s the journey. So although it took me three-quarters of a lifetime to arrive at the beginning, I’m pretty overwhelmed that others found the path, a joyous path, the path of least resistance. Much respect

noticing all the animals on my balcony, mostly birds (even little tiny bugs/spiders), and watching them live their day to day. Talking to them and hoping they feel my good energy. I used to be afraid of the spiders but now I let them be and have given them lovely names.
Also: wearing clothes that make me feel put together, especially a good pair of shoes. Boots for confidence, and sneakers for adaptability. When I put on sneakers/athletic shoes, I feel like getting things done (this is a known hack other people swear by too), especially around-the-home errands like cleaning, taking out trash etc. I have carpets and I absolutely have a pair of indoor-only sneakers!
Also on clothes: odd, but COMPRESSION clothes during the day make me feel great! Socks, or sometimes even shapewear, especially around the torso. I feel comforted and also very sleek. I like the posture I get. In the evening, really soft things to lounge in.
