    Thank you for this video! I have been pain free for about one year now. This is after 25 plus years of back issues and finally finding Dr Sarno’s teachings. I did the work and was cured. After some time, I learned how to overcome any twinges that creeped up and within minutes made them go away. Yesterday I had a relapse/flare up in my lower back while loading the dishwasher. It was very painful. I’ve had muscle spasms since yesterday making it difficult to walk, bend, etc. But I immediately knew this was and is TMS. I realized that I have been stressed out lately for various reasons, but chose not to allow myself to feel a lot of that stress and the emotions involved. I also stopped doing the work a few months ago. I got cocky because I felt fantastic. I now know that I need to keep up on allowing myself to feel and keep that reservoir from filling up. Instead I let the basement overflow again. I will use this relapse as a lesson to keep up on my feelings and not bury them. I’m re reading Mind Body Prescription, journaling again, and going through notes that helped me initially. I’ve already proved that I can overcome this, so it’s just a matter of time before I am pain free. This video is a great tool. Anyone out there who is having doubts, I speak from experience. TMS is real and you can cure it! Keep at it. Dan’s videos are a tremendous help.

    I needed to hear this Dan. Had 4 great weeks, decided to throw myself back into physical activity and wham!, acute lower back pain after just getting out the bath. Using the skills you taught me to make this as insignificant as I can, sadly, I got thrown into a bad panic attack. Again, I dug deep into my knowledge and let it be. Just a slight step back thats all.....and I know what psychological events triggered it too!

      Glad it helped! And yes, flares can happen. But if you stick with the work and choose how you respond if the pain does come back, you will teach your brain that it doesn't need to come back at all. Stick with it. You're well on your way. :-)

    Thanks so much for this. I am currently bedridden with a severe TMS attack. I feel under huge pressure to go the conventional medical route from those around me, none of whom believe in TMS and who are all alarmed at my current state and how ill be able to look after my wife who has severe physical difficulties in the future. I had a flare up in January for the first time since 2009 when I first discovered Sarno. I used his theory get through the horrors of January and felt so excited by it I told everyone about it. It feels like everyone is quietly but smugly is thinking ‘I knew it!’ Seeing this video gives me a little hope and calm.

    How amazing - I have spent my adult life looking at my childhood and family to see why 'I'm like I am'. I continually analyse my past. Perhaps you have just given me permission to finally let go!!

      You can decide to let go at any time. Analyzing why you are the way you are is of limited value. Better to determine how you would LIKE to be and put your attention on becoming THAT is where you can make changes fast.

    Great video!!! I’ll be coming back to this a LOT! Love the “basement” concept. This is very helpful because I had a tough week with a flare up. I’m dealing with pain from an injury that is healing and has a super strong TMS component, when I began to treat it as TMS, the symptoms “flipped” into “Piriformis Syndrome” and sciatic nerve pain.
    About a week ago, after a lot of letting go and indifference, and telling myself I was safe, all pain ceased. Gone. Many good days followed. So I went out and did some things that I have not done for the duration of this, just “living life”...as I have not done in months.
    The next day, my lower body pain flipped into neck pain and GERD. Major “symptom substitution” situation. I said, “Aha! I have you. I now KNOW this is 100% TMS.
    And.....today the old symptom (butt, sciatic and pelvic pain) back in full force. Scaring me. This helps. Also, I want to thank you for your approach. I’ve done all the journaling and therapy and all that, and honestly, it’s being present with the emotions and instilling a sense of safety right here in the present that is much more helpful for me. Be here now. Thank you so much for everything you do.

      You are very welcome. Typically, if the pain shows up after resuming activity you haven't done in a while, it's a fear response and the brain trying to protect us and giving us pain to make sure we "don't do THAT" again.

    Thank you - this was super helpful. I've gone through the Curable Groups and have been having success in alleviating my pain, but recently had a very stressful family situation, and it was like someone flipped a switch and my pain was back stronger than ever, and I've had a hard time getting my "mojo" back. This was very reassuring and was a great reminder of how to take control of my thoughts and to feel my emotions again.

    I’ve been dealing with some GI issues that I’ve recently figured out to be TMS. Years ago, I had the back pain, found the book, did the work, been gone ever since. Then sciatic pain showed up, then TMJ, then shoulder/neck. Did the work again each time and it all went away. Each time, though, I’d solve that particular problem, declare it done and forget it can come back if you get complacent. This GI stuff tricked me, because it’s not the same kind of ‘pain’, and I fell for the distraction. Figured it out, listening to Mind Body Prescription again, and found your videos. Super helpful, thank you. You have a wonderful easygoing way of explaining this simply, love the basement metaphor. Thanks for the help.

      Great stuff. Yes, GI issues are the result of TMS = too much stress. Stress suppresses the digestive system which allows GI disturbances to occur. Stressing out about a stress caused issue keeps it persistent. Dial down the fear. Counter life stress with a bit of self care. This should resolve.

      A flare is just the presence of more perceived danger. Safety is the solution.

    my "basement" was definitely overflowing. Funny how much denial I go through before I laugh at it and send it elsewhere... or away! Told Siri to set a daily reminder for me to look at these emotions, unacceptable " difficulties" I perceive and then deposit! Thanks again! Eric

    Great analogy with the basement and the subconscious Dan! I came back to this video as I’m currently having a mild flare up. I’ve doing the work for many years consistently until I was on autopilot without thinking and therefor pain free for years. However I recently a situation that brought about feelings of ‘unsafety’ in my environment followed by an unexpected flare up. No coincidence! Anyway heres to ‘reparenting’ myself that all is well and that I am safe. Thanks so much for your videos, they feel really supportive during this time. 🙏🏼💜

    Thanks Dan, needed this video today. Just listening to it has lifted me up and made me smile at myself that I'm in control of the flair up I'm having right now. How easily it draws you in to focusing on the pain and the negative thoughts of living with it. But no..     you are very clear in your comments. thank you. now i know why the flare ups come. i am just feeling better after a month long flare up. been doing this for 25 years. i have had years pain free with 2 big relapses in that time and many small nuisance sensations such as mild numbness etc. you are really being of service. thanks again

    What about if you're doing the work daily and the flare up comes out of nowhere? There is nothing to "go back to" because I'm already doing it. Is it possible to do 'too much' of the work or to be so overly diligent that that can cause a flare? Either way, this video soothed me today and helped me continue working on my emotional basement, so thank you. I've started listening to your daily videos as soon as I wake up each morning to stop myself getting into a fear spiral about what it's going to be like today when I get out of bed, really help.

    Hi! Very helpful video. I am currently 4 1/2 months into my discovery of Sarno and tms work. I have been doing some journaling, mainly about current stressors which has felt therapeutic, doing all that Sarno recommends and asking myself “what emotion am I having right now” and practicing feeling my emotions ever day. my pain has been moving around in a very bizarre fashion but overall decreasing quite a bit. Having long stretches through the day of being totally pain free. Praise God! My greatest accomplishment in all of this however, has been overcoming the fear and “life sentence” I had hanging over me. Anyway, 2 nights ago I was awakened in the middle of the night with the exact same arm nerve pain I had when my whole pain journey started. In fact, the initiating event also happened in the night. Since that initial event (6 years ago) it has moved around my body, changed in nature and intensity and most recently has set itself up as sciatica jumping back and forth between my legs for about 11 months. Now that it has moved back to my arm the sciatica is 100% gone which I’m grateful for the respite lol. It’s worse than it has ever been in my arm though and I’m wondering if this is my brains last ditch effort to draw me back into fear (since it decided to recreate the exact same initiating event that drew me into so much fear and obsession in the first place) or if I need to change up my game plan and try some other program or method? Thank you for any advice you have!

      To be fair- I’ve only done the “what emotion am I feeling right now” for about 1 week. I just wasn’t sure if this event was an indication that I’m doing something right or something wrong🤷‍♀️

      Do not let the pain moving or the severity of the pain throw your confidence. Stick with what's been working. Feel emotions, soothe - meaning turn down your stress - particularly about the symptoms themselves, get the mindset that I teach so often dialed in. Become indifferent to the pain. Literally don't care if it's there or not. Don't care if it moves, gets worse or anything. It's just TMS. Put as little focus on the symptoms as possible and they will fade away.

    Your videos have been exteremly insightful and helpful, this will help...and has helped some already. I recovered from TMS 5years ago with a couple small relapses but my current one is really testing me. I have now been doing research digging deeper into TMS for the last few weeks and realizing i still had a lot to learn. Your videos have really helped fill the gap and I am exteremly appeciative for that. God Bless

      Is the doubt and fear constant? If so, that's why the pain is constant. Does it at least increase or decrease - even slightly?

      @@PainFreeYou yes. The pain level goes up and down. I tell myself all day long that I'm ok that I'm perfectly healthy . I have the least pain when sleeping and in the morning

    What would be considered structural damage in the spine?

    Nailed it..its not enough to drain the mental swamp and manage the symptoms of pain and anxiety. We need to keep going and make it a lifestyle habit. Fill it up with positive mental chatter. Or the bucket will eventually fill up and your back to square 3.

    I'm ten years into my TMS journey and I still get relapses, though with decreasing frequency. I'm currently in the only bad one I've had since 2016. Each time they come they're in a slightly different form. This current, new iteration has been hitting me while I sleep! Any slight shifting of position can produce cattle-prod level pain. Very weird. Anyway, this video is very helpful. I like your videos because they're largely for people who understand TMS and they don't dwell as much on convincing and informing people about TMS. My conscious mind knows all about it. I could probably write my own book! It's my subconscious that clearly doesn't get it on some level.

      Relapses often happen when we go back to resisting and repressing emotions. Make feeling emotions who you become, not something you do when you have symptoms. Do a daily practice and shift your focus away from the pain. A mindset of complete indifference will allow it to go away faster than if we freak out over it.

      @@PainFreeYou Good advice. As a TMS veteran I'm pretty good at not freaking out. It's the daily practice of feeling emotions I'm not so good at. Especially when I'm not in pain. I'm also finding that awareness of emotion is different than feeling them. I'm super heady and can identify emotional or stressful situations, but it's extremely difficult for me to get the, observed, emotions out of my head and feel them. You have a few videos that are helpful in this regard. Thank you.

      @@PainFreeYou This relapse is particularly frustrating. I feel like I'm doing the work, but each time the pain subsides I get hit with another violent, super painful jab in my lower back. They hit me while laying in bed, but now also, seemingly randomly when I'm just standing or sitting. It's a really weird, new kind of relapse for me. It's getting a little harder to set the pain and anxiety, of knowing at any moment I could get hit again, aside.

      @@danwool Fear fuels TMS. Even if you aren't hurting at the moment, the fear of the pain is just as strong a distraction as the pain itself. Shift your focus to your emotional world. Shift to gratitude. Go live your life whether you hurt or not. Develop the mindset of indifference. I get it. The return of pain sucks. But you've survived them before and you will again. The faster you learn to respond with "oh well, whatever" instead of OMG freak out, the faster you will end the cycle.

    Got any ideas whether the groin pain or Souas pain is emotional. I have TMS and a working through this . Groin pain from pubis to umbilicus. Doing my exercises and emotional work without much success. Journaling daily and Am doing yoga as well. Frustrating

    Whats your thoughts about the theory. As the pain weakens ,starved of fear and loses its grip on its fuel. The pain neuron path goes into panic / desperate survival mode, causing a flare up, to re stimulate its fuel ....fear ? . A relapse could be great news if this is so ? In a challenge, they say, "never turn your back on your opponent and celebrate, especially when you think you have it floored". Your opponent does not fight fair and in its desperation, will see this as its opportunity to jump up and bite you in the ass .
    Dan is always right , keep doing the work, keep the balance , keep the peace ! 💗

    Very useful analogy. Richard Grannon has a program on emotional literacy...just what you're saying about facing emotion...it's just a feeling. Also check the work of Lorimer Moseley in Australia, Pain Revolution...builds on Sarno...amazing new data . Pain is part of the brain's protection mechanism...suppressed emotions can create "danger" warnings.. pain means protect this. You're doing great videos to help clean the mess! Thanks!

      Thank you Linda. I love Lorimer's explanations on pain as a measure of the brains perception of danger. The only thing I disagree with him on is his prognosis that it takes a long time to end symptoms. I have seen way too many people end their symptoms quickly to buy into his prognosis.

      @@PainFreeYou We are all different and can heal at different rates and with or without significant setbacks. We all have to make our journey alone although it's great to have fellow companions along the way! I have watched a lot of Lorimer's videos, he's quite entertaining, and have heard him mention that some people he has treated have recovered very quickly. However, I suppose it might be discouraging to those whose chronic pain has been long and intense to think they are doomed if they don't make rapid progress. To me what's crucial, is not backsliding and allowing the "Inner Critic" to start the "I told you so" mantra and destroy hope and belief in success. I love your videos...they are wonderful guides to daily commitment and acceptance. Thank you!

    Thank you, Dan! This is what I needed! I am in the middle of a flare-up and yes I did get very comfortable, I was 100% pain-free for many many many years so it's disappointing to feel pain again. I will work on feeling the emotions, I have been ignoring the negative emotions in an effort to be "positive" and feeling good, positive things. That's actually a question I have for you as far as this whole TMS process goes. Can you talk about the benefit of consciously selecting positive emotions? Kind of like the Law of Attraction theory where like attracts like. I have been working on being more positive and seeing the world with pink sunglasses. Does this help with preventing TMS or does that counter the work by basically sticking the negative things into the basement? Thanks in advance!

      If we choose positive emotions and bury the negative, yes, it can cause a flare up. We can choose to FEEL your negative emotions, but not live in them all day long. Give them space to be felt, then go on with your day. Overall, don't react to the pain. It's no big deal.

    Hello. Please can you reply. I've just found your videos. I've got severe anxiety disorder, complex PTSD, M.E/CFS and Fibromyalgia. 17 years now of M.E where I'm mainly bedbound. If I'm feeling enough energy to go for a drive, I feel fabulous, maybe even a short walk in nature, feeling great and positive but I don't know when I've overdone it but I'll suddenly feel really sick and shaky and IBS comes on immediately. I'll get home and spend the next few days without energy to move or talk. I'm sensitive to light and sound and cannot digest any food. In this case, I don't have any warnings or triggers as I was happy being out. Being in bed vecause I'm too exhausted and sick to move is worse than hell. Telling my body I'm safe helps my anxiety but does not help my M E/CFS. Can you help? X0

      Perceived danger explains it all. And keep in mind, despite being happy that you are out, symptoms are driven by an unconscious perception of danger.

    Hi Dan, could I ask your advice, or would love to see a video on how to cope with back flare ups when you have dependents. I have two young kids and it's the fear of having my back go and then have to care for my kids when I'm in agony which almost onsets more pain. The stress of the thought. I understand TMS in my rational brain but my subconscious has a field day when it comes to this. Thanks so much, Annie

    Picture a water bottle - it’s fills with stress, emotions etc all your life. Do this work and it lowers the water …….. but it’s not empty yet ! It can fill back up to the top and give you symptoms. It’s life long work to stay fit and healthy and keep the bottle empty !

    Dan- you mentioned journaling. Is this something you recommend doing daily to deal with the daily emotions so as to keep the basement from over flowing?
    I also really liked the gratitude element of your message today. That’s something I need to remind myself of instead of dwelling on what I’ve lost (temporarily)!

      I am not against journaling. What I don't believe is very helpful is to keep digging up old memories and journaling about them over and over again. If you like to put the pen on paper, journal about the current stuff. I'm not a fan of digging up old skeletons from our past.

    New to your videos, they are so great, thank you Dan! When you said you felt your anger about the experience with the estate, what do you mean exactly? did you yell in your car? Punch a pillow? How do you actually get the anger out without engaging the other person? X

      Feeling is internal. Expressing emotions is sharing them with others. Have you ever been alone and mad? Do that. FEEL the anger. One need not explode their anger on others to feel it. This video gives MANY options for feeling emotions. Try them out. Pick the one you like best.

      Yes I have. Stress suppresses the digestive and immune system. IBS and Reflux are TMS - which I say is "Too Much Stress". I also say that stressing out about symptoms that are caused by stress is like pouring gasoline on the fire and wondering why it won't go out. Soothing your fears about the symptoms is REALLY important as it will help turn down the stress and allow your digestive system to return to normal operation.

    Dan can you please please explain to me what happened? Yesterday I felt like I don't know...like everything and everyone was picking on me, I felt I was at the point of rage but I couldn't find a specific trigger so to say..and then at the end of the program...my boss has said something to me that made me off the sudden feel like a human torch of rage. I allowed me to feel that rage on the way home and I thought that was it...but today...as I woke up and was bending for my socks...Whamoo!!!! Bang!!! Worst worst lumbar pain then in the last 6 months...I don't understand...

      I have recently had this, for me, I believe it was a simple case of the rage raising anxious levels to 70% , then the feeling process only reducing to 60%. You thought that was it?, did you" feel" that was it?. That evening when you went home were you still dwelling or thinking about the days events, even slightly ? .

      Alfred - much of TMS is triggered by a sense of danger. Perhaps the flare you got the next morning was your brain "protecting" you from going into work where you would encounter this feeling of being picked on and dealing with your boss again.     Only 50 ! 😂😂😂. How about every day, multiple times . Its on auto like even when I'm safe and not thinking about it , I do notice the subconscious throws out random negative thoughts pre and during flares.
