It's not only the alpha particles, the pancake sensor of the GMC 600+is much more sensitive even to gamma and beta as compared to the tube sensor of GMC 320S. On 15 gr of Potassium carbonate my 600+ reads an average of +490CPM above background while 320S reads only +15 CPM above background.
