  • Spanning over 700,000 acres of remote, undeveloped mountains and valleys, Nevada's Basin & Range National Monument has been described as one of the emptiest spaces in a state famous for its emptiness. This vast and rugged landscape is home to many ecologically significant plants and animals, has a lengthy human history, and contains City, a massive earth art piece by artist, Michael Heizer.

      Hey, Kenny! I'm glad you joined us for the tour. This place was the perfect place to find solitude. There were some days that were incredibly quiet, all you'd hear was an occasional breeze blowing through the sagebrush and maybe a few birds singing in the distance. It's one of my favorite places in this region of Nevada and I'd highly recommend it for you and your dog! Thanks for watching, Kenny! ~ Mike

      Federal Law says that in all National Monuments dogs must be kept on a leash 6 feet long or less at all times. They don't want dogs digging things up, nor tearing up the landscape, nor chasing and harassing the native animals. The man who made this video was breaking the Law.

    I've driven across Nevada on US-50 loneliest highway in America or so the signs say. I tend to believe them. I would stop and look at the stars with my binoculars as the Springtime Milky Way was out in early morning. Gets so dark out there when there's no lights for 60 miles the Milky Way could cast a shadow on a Moonless night.
    Do you have a small telescope like a tabletop 102mm or 4"? Or astronomical binoculars. I have an inexpensive 7x50mm pair of Celestron Cometron binos that are great for viewing the stars. The 50mm or 2" aperture allows them to collect a lot of light, but the 7x magnification makes them easy to hold steady.
    I now live in Southern New Mexico and don't have far to drive to dark sky. Are you planning to go see the full eclipse on April 8th? I'm driving over to near Fredericksburg, TX to the middle of its track because there won't be another until 2044. I'm in my 70s and am not too sure I'll be around till then.

      The night skies were incredible on the clear nights. I've thought about getting my hands on a telescope to use in the field. This area is incredibly dark, although you can see the glow from Vegas on the southern horizon, but you're still far enough away that it doesn't interfere with the dark too much. I wasn't planning on traveling to see the eclipse this year. We spent time down on the Tule Valley Hard Pan (dry lake bed) in western Utah and watched last fall's eclipse. It was quite an experience. I have driven across Utah and Nevada on The Loneliest Highway in America countless times. At one time you could get a map with different stops on it. You would get your map signed, send it to the governor's office and they would send you a I Survived the Loneliest Road in America certificate. I counted the cars I passed one time an it was seven. I was driving my old 1955 Thunderbird and pulled in to get gas and then a sandwich and something to drink. The girl behind the counter said, "I'm not making you a sandwich until you give me a ride in your old car." That is a wonderful drive.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher Месяц назад +2

      @@Colorado_Native That's humorous, give me a ride or no sandwich. My son asks me why I carry a road atlas of the US and I just tell him that the GPS satellite data (I designed and built the 1st ones) doesn't always work. I have an uncle at the end of a long road in the desert in AZ who gets at least 2 cars a week at his place despite the Dead End sign. He printed out a sketch and gives it to people who pull up.

    I see the beauty, but I still prefer my mountains to come with forests, my peace with the abundant voices of the little lives. Where the grass murmurs as it grows, and the dirt smells of the richness of life itself. Where the wind is fluted by leaves and needles into an orchestra of the wild.

    For the lovers of solitude, USA has a lot of places to choose and, lucky for those lovers, not many who go there, especially outside important hunting seasons. Central PA, comments on a trail description: "Allegheny Front trail is increasingly popular.... " "Yes! We hiked there for three days without meeting anyone! We loved it!". But when I was in a similar place during bear+grouse season, I felt like in a war zone, heavy and light caliber shots from different directions. But the regular hunters seem to know what they are doing.

    • @AbouttheJourney
      @AbouttheJourney  19 дней назад

      You'll find a lot of solitude out here for sure. There is so much undeveloped, wild public land out here in the west that I rarely see any hunters. Most of the time when I encounter them, it's during the deer season and they're off trail. I worry about some of the recreational shooters. Too much drinking and carelessness. What a beautiful place! I have a curiosity about whether or not the dogs ever get into any trouble with wildlife, such as snakes, scorpions, or even sharp rocks on their paws? We want to get a dog. We want to get a motorhome. I see many people bring their dogs out to wilderness areas. Clearly you all think it is safe, but I have to ask about the rare occasions and what to watch out for. Thanks! 😀

    • @AbouttheJourney
      @AbouttheJourney  Месяц назад

      It's really nice out there. As for the dogs, Doug (Black w. tail) loves to chase things like moose, deer, porcupines, etc., so when I'm not filming, he is often on a leash. The other two who are older, are really good about not chasing things. I do worry about rattlesnakes from time to time, but we're usually out in these areas in the daytime (Rattlers are generally nocturnal) during the winter/early spring, so we don't see much in the way of snakes. I hike all the time with them, so their paws toughen up and get used to the rocks and dirt so they don't get cut up. Unfortunately, some of these areas have broken glass lying around, so you'll want to watch out for that. Your dogs will love you for taking them out, especially if they know that there is a warm and comfortable RV waiting for them back at camp! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
