Some of the BEST CAMPING you'll find!
Buckskin Draw is one of the most spectacular canyons in the San Rafael Swell. Ancient rock art, dinosaur foot prints and Utah's last suspension bridge can found here. This area also has some of the best camping spots in the northern Swell and provides access to several great hikes!

Does your stove melt table?
No. There is enough space between the burners and the bottom of the stove to keep it cool.
Thanks for the great video. How's the road going out there? I saw it's a dirt road but it looks pretty good. Do you need a high clearance vehicle to make it when it's dry? Thanks
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The Wedge is very beautiful. The road was in great shape and didn't require high clearance, but getting to some of the camps sites may need it. It's a different story when it's wet. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Wow so funny i realy love this Short 🤩✌️✌️
Thanks. This little guy was pretty fun to watch.
Wonderful Images. The road to the summit from Frenchglen is a fine washboard road but continuing down from the summit to the hwy. south of Frenchglen was, at least in 2006, very dicey for passenger vehicles. I was wondering if that part of the loop road has been repaired at all. Anyway the 25 miles up from Frenchglen is a remarkable drive & should be savered. Not sure about Fish Lake but reports remain positive & Jackman (?) campground nearby (relatively ?) as well. For non campers the STEENS MOUNTAIN resort outside of Frenchglen is & hopefully still is a nice alternative with several trailers for accommodations. I did. try swimming in WILDHORSE lake for a few moments but it proved too cold for extended exposure. The trail down to the lake from the summit parking lot to the lake warrants caution but is just under a 1 mile descent. The walk up to the highest point from the summit parking lot takes about 10-15 minutes.
Thanks! it's an incredibly beautiful place. I can hardly wait to go back. The road past the summit was in great shape and I'd say even better due to it seeing less use. It looks like they have brought it up to grade like the road from French Glenn. I did a quick drive through of the Fish Lake campground, but it was full, so I headed up to where I camped in the video. The next time I'm out there, I'm definitely going to hike down to Wild Horse Lake, but I'll probably skip the cold swim...😬 Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Curious. So you’re saying no travel trailers?
Maybe a small, high clearance, 4x4 type, but there are some tight switchbacks on a steep downhill. I think there is a sign at the top cautioning people not to take trailers down into the canyon, so proceed with caution. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
@@AbouttheJourney thx for the reply. That was the sense I was getting when I watched this and another video I saw.
Wish you could have the time to show Fish Lake {campground}, its a beautiful area. I guess you cannot be everywhere.
I did stop by to look at the camping options, but it was full so I camped elsewhere. It's really beautiful and I probably should have taken some footage. I guess I'll just have to go back... Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Great video. Do you have any Idea which ingenuous people lived in that area?
Malheur NWR
I went through the wildlife refuge too. It's a beautiful area. Thanks for watching.
The late 1940s was not the height of the cold war. Not even close.
Yes, I probably should have said at the beginning.
It's certainly debatable how quietly... they could have conducted those tests😂😂😂😂
The locals did find out and showed up to watch the show...from a safe distance, of course.
Look like a mini meteor creator
And that was after they tried to fill in the craters and cover them with concrete. As you can see, it has collapsed.
This makes zero sense
These tests were conducted while the Department of Defense was looking for a suitable location for NORAD.
How does it make no sense? Our government wanted to know how well bunkers hold up to bombs of different yields, at different depths. So they could find the ideal ratio bunker stability and depth to ensure survival and continuity of government. Something that's going to come into play anyday now when the nukes start flying. They've been prepping for it for decades. 🤙
You sound very professional
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This is a fantastic place to go and explore. Thanks for watching. ~ Mike.
Oh, absolutely brilliant scenery my friend. Shots are amazing.
Thanks, Ervin! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's really cool and this is just a small part of the Swell. It's a huge geologic formation with a lot of backcountry.
Yes, cool
What an amazing place! So stunning and you filmed it amazingly. I really love how you incorporate the history of the area into the videos. I may have to try something similar in upcoming videos if that is cool with you haha. I don’t want to be a copycat!
Thanks! It's a really beautiful place to camp and hike (great backpacking too) and I'm glad you appreciate the filming. I've always liked good cinematography in the movies so I try my best to channel inner cinematographer into hiking and camping videos, lol. There is so much interesting history in all of the places that we outdoor RUclipsrs go, so please, copy away! I always enjoyed learning about a places back story and I think a lot of our viewers appreciate a little bit of history along with the awesome scenery too.
Nice SUV RVing rip off
Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you watched the video. Tristan has inspired a lot of us on RUclips and I've always appreciate his angle and contributions to the outdoor RUclips genre. Thanks for watching!
Another nice video. I appreciate it when people mention how easy/difficult access is. I drive a small AWD truck that is reasonably capable on roads but doesn't have the clearance or low range of a 4WD. I am often traveling alone and try to avoid places that are too technical for my truck
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. The San Rafael Swell is a really great place to loose yourself in for a few days/weeks. There is so much backcountry here. Most of the roads in the area aren't going to require high clearance and only get questionable when they get too wet. I see a lot of people taking their Subarus, camper vans and SUVs out here so a truck would have no problem. If you have any questions about the area, feel free to DM on Instagram. Thanks for watching!
nice view
Thanks, I'm glad you like it! You'll have to go down there sometime! Thanks for watching!
Hey, I recognize some of that! (I think 😅) That was a great spot to camp!
Yes it is! There were quite a few people on the Wedge, so we camped over at the East Wedge, which wasn't too far. I'm down here again, this time with Isabelle. She's never been before.
NOOOOO THANK YOU!! THE YOUNGER THE MORE POISONOUS THE VENOM!!
Not true
I try to avoid them if possible, but they're beautiful to look at!
Mojave
This was in Northern Utah, much farther north than the Mojave Rattlers range.
Very cool 😎 Mate
This was the second one I've seen in the last couple of weeks. Really pretty too.
Very watchable and full of useful detail. Essential viewing for anyone on this road trip. Currently working thru all your videos. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks! I'm always glad to hear that these videos have been helpful for people. My main goal is to encourage more people to get out and enjoy their public lands. This is a great hike, particularly in the early summer. All of the streams and springs will be flowing and it's really green. Thanks for watching! Mike
Your video has got some great shots. Thanks for sharing this beautiful place with us.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a beautiful place to camp and hike. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Outstanding scenery man, shots are fantastic.
Thank you! This place is amazing and quite a bit of fun to film in. Thanks for watching, Ervin!
Thank you for such a a beautiful video !! I'll camp by my car when I hike this.
You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. It's a long day on the trail with a good amount of elevation gain, but totally worth it. Have a camp waiting at the bottom is a great way to do it. There are four USFS campgrounds along the South Willow Canyon rd, including one at the trailhead, so lots of options. The Stansburys have quite a few nice hikes in them. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Seven Key Holes Slot Canyon looks exactly like what I imagined when reading The Monkey Wrench Gang. Totally different area, I know, but in my mind's eye, that's what I was picturing. Uncanny! Great vid, Mike!
Thanks! The Monkey Wrench Gang sure is a fun read. Edward Abby loved the red rock country and it shows on many levels in his writing. Thanks for watching, Cameron!
Absolutely beautiful and powerful place! Such cool history as well. Amazing video as always my friend!
Hey, Kalman! Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a really cool place with a lot of interesting history, some that I didn't have time to cover in this video. Great hiking too! It's definitely worth spending some time there, just don't do it in the summer...hot, hot, hot!
Enjoyed the tour very much, thank you.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. This place is very nice, with a ton of interesting bits of history, geology, and great camping and hiking. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
It's so nice to get away from people.
Yes it is! We saw a few people, mostly around Whitney Pockets, but other than that, we had the place to ourselves most of the trip. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
This is part of the problems with moderen people most wont see the writing on the walls and dont care we have to slow down thats just me saying thanks for the adventure brother God Bless
I've been in the Seven Keyholes Slot canyon a couple of times before and I had never seen some of these petroglyphs...walked right past them. These days, I spend a little more time looking closely at my surroundings. It astonishing just how many rock art panels there are in this area. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Great video! I definitely need to go camping out there.
The BLM is evil. Nuff said. Do some research instead of relying on just one document. Feds have no business owning that much land.
Can’t wait !
I hope you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Thanks for the tour. I was unaware of basin national Monument. I love the desert.
You're welcome! I usually pay close attention to public land issues, but this one flew under my radar too. I didn't hear about it until 2016, a full 9 months after it's designation. It's really nice out there! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
The Battle of Three Forks was fought near where you pointed out the shadow of the Owyhee River. An estimated 600 to 900 Piutes held the high ground, and horse-mounted Infantry Troops were down on the river flats. There were casualties on both sides, and it ended up being a stalemate because the Piutes held the high ground and numbers advantage while the troopers had superior firepower and a small cannon. The Troopers lost the cannon in the Owyhee River but retrieved it after the battle (LOL, I wanted to save everyone from going out there to look for the cannon). Also, Camp Three Forks was located at the southwestern foot of South Mountain in Idaho, about 15 miles as the crow flies from the battle site. Camp Three Forks was a stage stop on the Winnemucca/Silver City Road, a fort, and a prison where they held what were considered renegade Indians. This occurred during the 1864 - 1868 Piute War, in which about 2,000 Indians, soldiers, and pioneers lost their lives. In terms of human life, I believe it was the costliest Indian War during the settling of the West. General George Crook, of Geronimo fame, commanded the war from Fort Boise, and he spent several difficult years on the trail of Piutes, mainly in Eastern Oregon. I hope you find this info as interesting as I did. My source of information comes from the book "The Deadliest Indian War in the West" by Gregory Michno. Another fascinating piece of information is that most of Michno's history comes from actual Army reports documented by officers soon after each skirmish or battle.
Wow, I had no idea that went on here. There are so many interesting events that played a roll in our country's history. Thanks for the history lesson! The Deadliest Indian War in the West sounds like an interesting read too. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
For the lovers of solitude, USA has a lot of places to choose and, lucky for those lovers, not many who go there, especially outside important hunting seasons. Central PA, comments on a trail description: "Allegheny Front trail is increasingly popular.... " "Yes! We hiked there for three days without meeting anyone! We loved it!". But when I was in a similar place during bear+grouse season, I felt like in a war zone, heavy and light caliber shots from different directions. But the regular hunters seem to know what they are doing.
You'll find a lot of solitude out here for sure. There is so much undeveloped, wild public land out here in the west that I rarely see any hunters. Most of the time when I encounter them, it's during the deer season and they're off trail. I worry about some of the recreational shooters. Too much drinking and carelessness. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
All the roads smooth
Yes, they were. It looked like they had been graded recently. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
What an amazing adventure! I love exploring the desert SW and finding areas exactly like this. Thanks for bringing us along.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's a really nice monument. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Yes it's quiet... Until youtubers and influencers start telling the world about it.
If I can "influence" someone to go out here and camp for a few days, that is a win. It's important for people to know about their public lands and why they should be protected from development. With this channel, I hope to encourage people to get out and explore America's public lands. It's our natural heritage. Thanks for watching the video and I hope you enjoyed it. ~ Mike
Awesome opening. I love the timelapse - great video. It looks like a really great hike 🙌
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. This is a fantastic place to hike in. I'd highly recommend it! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
It's getting pretty clear why it's the monument that "nobody ever heard of"!!
It doesn't seem to be on too many people's radar but it really beautiful and remote. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Thank you for this video. I need to visit there.
Your welcome. I'd highly recommend visiting there. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike

From my Nevada off-highway explorations I would recommend 8 or preferably 10 ply tires. Seems like every rock in Nevada has sharp edges!
Boy, those rocks sure do. Fortunately, I haven't had a flat in quite a while. Next time I'm tire shopping, I'll consider it. I broke a lower ball joint once while exploring the mountains of Colorado and didn't really like getting stuck out in the boondocks. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
What a spectacular place! I cannot wait to go there.
It's fantastic! I really like it. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Did you encounter any snakes?
Yes, one really nice looking Gopher Snake. He/she was crawling across the road so I stopped and took a picture. It's in the video somewhere. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I spent a lot of time there. The desert looks best at sun down, sun up or when cloudy/stormy. I took my dog to a rattlesnake aversion therapy program. It paid off several times.
It's a great place. It was still pretty cold while we were there filming this, we even had frost on a couple of nights, so the rattle snakes weren't active yet. Rattlesnake aversion programs for dogs are a good thing. I'm looking into it. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
@@AbouttheJourney Yeah. My lab almost got bit when were were several miles from town as she was curious and was about 30 feet ahead of me. I did the math and realized I'd never would have made it back in time. I signed up for the classes as soon as they were available. Thanks for the video
