Camping and Hiking on Oregon's Steens Mountain
I’ve not come across an odd/even day leash trail before. Interesting.✌️
Yeah, they had to do it due to dogs and mountain bikers. Millcreek Canyon is the only canyon not used for the municipal water supply, so it gets all the dog traffic. There are a ton of dogs on certain weekends year round. For the record, my dogs love it! =-D
A beautiful little lake and basin. Pretty nice view of the Salt Lake in the distance, too. Thanks for sharing!✌️
It is beautiful. This was my first time up to this lake. There is a South Willow Lake in the next basin to the south that I've camped at before. I was going to do a hike up there this year, but I've been too busy to make it happen. The Stansburys are great and I've always really liked hiking in them. Last year my wife was offered a job in the area so we moved out to the Tooele Valley, which has been great for the hiking opportunities.

Remaining snow in August at 9,000. Wow and some decent views of Lake Tahoe. Nice!✌️
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I was impressed with the snow too. This was after a very heavy snow year for the Sierras and the west in general. The snow pack lingered into September in a few areas here in northern Utah. This was my first time in the area and there is a ton of great hiking to be had. The route I took gave me a unique view of the surrounding mountains and the views of Tahoe were spectacular! Good stuff.
@@AbouttheJourney Lately, I’ve been impressed with trips I’ve seen in the Uinta Mountains. They look intriguing.
The Uintas are fantastic! I'd highly recommend doing the High-Line trail. It goes through all the good stuff. It's like a little slice of Alaska right here in Utah. I've done it twice and its always such a great time, even the time we got stuck in a white-out at 11,000 ft. on the 24th of July.
@@AbouttheJourneyThanks for the info. I’ve always enjoyed my times I’ve spent in Utah. I could spend a lifetime there and never see the same place twice.
Now that's a cool hike! Is it considered to be on public land? Not sure how that works in France...
This was a great hike. The Galamus Gorge is pretty spectacular and I'm hoping to hike/swim it next year while were in the area. All of this land is government land (public land) with the hermitage being managed by the local department (French equivalent to counties).
The Franciscan order was established in 1209. These limestone landscapes are stunningly beautiful.
Thanks for the clarification. This area is absolutely spectacular and I was really impressed with Galumus Gorge and the Hermitage. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike.
Beautiful!
Thanks! France has some truly spectacular hiking...and great food!
I would love to visit this hermitage, love the cave chapel cut into the rock 👍~ Anna
It is spectacular! I really like exploring these areas. There is so much interesting history here.
~25 HP and 17lb/ft torque @ 7100 rpm per researching 300 cc for motorcycles and extrapolating specs from a 531cc/50hp two-stroke (Hirth).
That’s the cosmos 300 engine. 36HP@7200 at sea level. They make trikes all the way up to about 65HP using the rotax 582 engine.
Thanks for the specs! This was really fun and I'm looking forward to doing it again. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Thanks for the info. They also had the backpack versions too, but you have to receive training before you get to fly with one of those.
Crazyyy!!!
It was. Heights usually make me nervous, but this felt quite safe. I highly recommend it! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
Good job Mike,,, Ĺots of fun 😂
Thanks, John! This was a ton of fun. I'm usually a little apprehensive about heights, but this didn't make me nervous at all, even looking at my feet with a couple thousand feet of space below them. These guys are going to be back in a couple of weeks to train some more people, so I'm going to make sure I have plenty of beer on hand. 😆
Thanks for posting this video. I love National Public Lands Day, and I am glad that you are helping to spread the word about it. I have done a lot of volunteer trail maintenance in the past with the US Forest Service and I worked one summer on a wilderness trail crew in Colorado, and I have attended National Public Lands Day events, too. It is a lot of fun, and helps to maintain trails, pick up litter, and refurbish campgrounds. I re-posted this short on the Foresty Forest Fan Group Facebook page yesterday because I hope that maybe some more people will see it and be inspired to volunteer on their local National Forest (or other public lands near them). This Facebook group has 2,300 followers - so maybe some of them will come over and check out your channel, too! (In case you do not know who Foresty Forest is, he has a RUclips channel, and he often does volunteer trail maintenance work, and he sometimes picks up litter in campgrounds in his videos. His channel is my favorite channel on RUclips.) So thanks again for helping to spread the word!! 🌎 💙
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful. Our public land are one of the best things about America! I too have done a bit of volunteer trail maintenance for the Forest Service and I'm a big proponent of cleaning up trash at campsites and on trails. I always carry trash bags with me just in case (I've had to clean up some doozies too) and I try to enlist friends and family to help. Every day should be public lands day when it come to picking up trash. Thanks for watching and re-posting it too.
Spectacular canyon, great place for camping.
It sure is. I've been going here since the early 90's and it never gets old. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Awesome place
It is! Nevada has many hidden gems. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Been going to and camping in the Bighorns since 1994. Usually once a year but I have been there three times in a single year. Its a long haul from Kentucky but my stress seems to melt away while out there. Its 8/24/2024 and we just got back home two days ago. Did a minimalist trip this time. We used a rooftop tent and awning with walls on our Silverado. Had a great time. We also took a long loop back home by dropping through Colorado down to New Mexico and spent a night at a campground near Cimmaron, NM. The low or no humidity West is addictive to a Ky native.
That sounds like a great trip. Hopefully you were able to escape the summer heat. I lived 28 years in Alaska really missed the dry, low humidity of the west, but I'm living in northern Utah now, which isn't as wet, cold, and dark in the winters and so far, it's been great. This was my first time in the Bighorns and I loved it! I'll definitely be going back at some point. It was such a great place to camp. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
one of my favorite stops , i'm here for the memories of 20 yrs. of snowbirding down south.......the first time i saw a red velvet ant you i.d.ed i was blown away.....didn't know it was an ant , but it didn't make any kind of sense...still doesn't.........anyway , thanks ..
The KOFA really surprised me. I haven't spent much time exploring Arizona's back country but I'm hooked. I'm going to try to get back down there this winter. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
What camera you using?
This was probably shot on my Go Pro 7 (Black), but I currently use an 8 most of the time, with the 7 primarily used on the roof of the truck. They've been pretty decent cameras and fairly inexpensive. I have been looking at upgrading to a 12 though. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
One of my favs! I do it as a loop, around Raymond and down Porter fork.
Me too! Such a great hike. That loop sounds nice. I need to try it sometime. I usually do it as and out and back from Bowman Fork but I did do a loop that started at the Alexander Basin TH, up to Gobblers, then to Raymond, and looped around Gobblers, back to Alexander and out. It's a great hike. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching! ~ Mike
What happened to your gas door??? I'm kidding, as I also drive a Gen 1 Tundra. 😅😅😅 Luckily my door is still held on by half the hinge. I live in Worland so I'm 30 minutes from the Bighorns and I thank God for the opportunity to camp in that same area. Also, the trout in Meadowlark are delicious!!
Lol. The funny thing is, I just bought another 1st gen this summer and the door fell off within three weeks of me owning it. I have replacement doors for both of them, they just need to be painted and installed. The Bighorns were awesome! I can hardly wait to go back. Hopefully next summer. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I found an adapter that goes from the stove to the 1lb tank 9n temu for less than 2$ so cheap I bought 2 and they also double as a 1lb refiller. Take ur 30lb tank and flip it upsidedown put ur empty 1 lb tank on the adapter. Then screw onto the 30lb tank and wait 2 mins and reverse the process viola!!🎉🎉 enjoy
I'll have to look into one of those. Sounds like a handy item to have around. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Thank you for the upload. I'll mention the video when I get there. And good luck with the RUclips channel.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. When I'm escaping the winters of Northern Utah, this is the first place with no snow and warmer than up north temperatures that I get to, so I've camped in this area a lot. Enjoy your trip! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Have you ever found turquoise in you exploring?
I haven't. I'm pretty new to rockhounding and have only been a few times, but I'd love to find some. It's not to common in Utah, where I'm at. Arizona and Nevada seem to be the best places to find it. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Does your stove melt table?
No. There is enough space between the burners and the bottom of the stove to keep it cool.
Thanks for the great video. How's the road going out there? I saw it's a dirt road but it looks pretty good. Do you need a high clearance vehicle to make it when it's dry? Thanks
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The Wedge is very beautiful. The road was in great shape and didn't require high clearance, but getting to some of the camps sites may need it. It's a different story when it's wet. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Wow so funny i realy love this Short 🤩✌️✌️
Thanks. This little guy was pretty fun to watch.
Wonderful Images. The road to the summit from Frenchglen is a fine washboard road but continuing down from the summit to the hwy. south of Frenchglen was, at least in 2006, very dicey for passenger vehicles. I was wondering if that part of the loop road has been repaired at all. Anyway the 25 miles up from Frenchglen is a remarkable drive & should be savered. Not sure about Fish Lake but reports remain positive & Jackman (?) campground nearby (relatively ?) as well. For non campers the STEENS MOUNTAIN resort outside of Frenchglen is & hopefully still is a nice alternative with several trailers for accommodations. I did. try swimming in WILDHORSE lake for a few moments but it proved too cold for extended exposure. The trail down to the lake from the summit parking lot to the lake warrants caution but is just under a 1 mile descent. The walk up to the highest point from the summit parking lot takes about 10-15 minutes.
Thanks! it's an incredibly beautiful place. I can hardly wait to go back. The road past the summit was in great shape and I'd say even better due to it seeing less use. It looks like they have brought it up to grade like the road from French Glenn. I did a quick drive through of the Fish Lake campground, but it was full, so I headed up to where I camped in the video. The next time I'm out there, I'm definitely going to hike down to Wild Horse Lake, but I'll probably skip the cold swim...😬 Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Curious. So you’re saying no travel trailers?
Maybe a small, high clearance, 4x4 type, but there are some tight switchbacks on a steep downhill. I think there is a sign at the top cautioning people not to take trailers down into the canyon, so proceed with caution. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
@@AbouttheJourney thx for the reply. That was the sense I was getting when I watched this and another video I saw.
Wish you could have the time to show Fish Lake {campground}, its a beautiful area. I guess you cannot be everywhere.
I did stop by to look at the camping options, but it was full so I camped elsewhere. It's really beautiful and I probably should have taken some footage. I guess I'll just have to go back... Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Great video. Do you have any Idea which ingenuous people lived in that area?
Malheur NWR
I went through the wildlife refuge too. It's a beautiful area. Thanks for watching.
The late 1940s was not the height of the cold war. Not even close.
Yes, I probably should have said at the beginning.
It's certainly debatable how quietly... they could have conducted those tests😂😂😂😂
The locals did find out and showed up to watch the show...from a safe distance, of course.
Look like a mini meteor creator
And that was after they tried to fill in the craters and cover them with concrete. As you can see, it has collapsed.
This makes zero sense
These tests were conducted while the Department of Defense was looking for a suitable location for NORAD.
How does it make no sense? Our government wanted to know how well bunkers hold up to bombs of different yields, at different depths. So they could find the ideal ratio bunker stability and depth to ensure survival and continuity of government. Something that's going to come into play anyday now when the nukes start flying. They've been prepping for it for decades. 🤙
You sound very professional
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This is a fantastic place to go and explore. Thanks for watching. ~ Mike.
Oh, absolutely brilliant scenery my friend. Shots are amazing.
Thanks, Ervin! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's really cool and this is just a small part of the Swell. It's a huge geologic formation with a lot of backcountry.
Yes, cool
What an amazing place! So stunning and you filmed it amazingly. I really love how you incorporate the history of the area into the videos. I may have to try something similar in upcoming videos if that is cool with you haha. I don’t want to be a copycat!
Thanks! It's a really beautiful place to camp and hike (great backpacking too) and I'm glad you appreciate the filming. I've always liked good cinematography in the movies so I try my best to channel inner cinematographer into hiking and camping videos, lol. There is so much interesting history in all of the places that we outdoor RUclipsrs go, so please, copy away! I always enjoyed learning about a places back story and I think a lot of our viewers appreciate a little bit of history along with the awesome scenery too.
Nice SUV RVing rip off
Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you watched the video. Tristan has inspired a lot of us on RUclips and I've always appreciate his angle and contributions to the outdoor RUclips genre. Thanks for watching!
Another nice video. I appreciate it when people mention how easy/difficult access is. I drive a small AWD truck that is reasonably capable on roads but doesn't have the clearance or low range of a 4WD. I am often traveling alone and try to avoid places that are too technical for my truck
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. The San Rafael Swell is a really great place to loose yourself in for a few days/weeks. There is so much backcountry here. Most of the roads in the area aren't going to require high clearance and only get questionable when they get too wet. I see a lot of people taking their Subarus, camper vans and SUVs out here so a truck would have no problem. If you have any questions about the area, feel free to DM on Instagram. Thanks for watching!
nice view
Thanks, I'm glad you like it! You'll have to go down there sometime! Thanks for watching!
Hey, I recognize some of that! (I think 😅) That was a great spot to camp!
Yes it is! There were quite a few people on the Wedge, so we camped over at the East Wedge, which wasn't too far. I'm down here again, this time with Isabelle. She's never been before.
NOOOOO THANK YOU!! THE YOUNGER THE MORE POISONOUS THE VENOM!!
Not true
I try to avoid them if possible, but they're beautiful to look at!
Mojave
This was in Northern Utah, much farther north than the Mojave Rattlers range.
Very cool 😎 Mate
This was the second one I've seen in the last couple of weeks. Really pretty too.
Very watchable and full of useful detail. Essential viewing for anyone on this road trip. Currently working thru all your videos. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks! I'm always glad to hear that these videos have been helpful for people. My main goal is to encourage more people to get out and enjoy their public lands. This is a great hike, particularly in the early summer. All of the streams and springs will be flowing and it's really green. Thanks for watching! Mike
Your video has got some great shots. Thanks for sharing this beautiful place with us.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a beautiful place to camp and hike. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
