      Just rebuilt my EE20 euro 5 last year and there's nothing wrong with the cranks. It's to do with the rear main bearing failing and not supporting the crank which causes it to break. Why do the bearings fail because Subaru recommends the incorrect service intervals. These engines need oil charges every 10k I do mine every 5k not 15k and then people leave them to 20k no wonder they fail. Idots

    I'm curious if the 1MZ's sludge issues followed to the 3MZ. I have a 3MZ that just rolled over 245K miles today. The last time I had the valve covers off, you could have probably hosed them off and eaten off the inside of them. However, I do change Mobil1 every 6-7K miles and ran it since 10K miles.

    That 1mz v6 engine is the one I have in my old Camry, as long as you keep the oil changed every 3 thousand miles they're pretty bullet proof and decently powerful.

  • @FunkyFresh48

    The 1MZ, and 5VZ are among the best Japanese V6 engines ever made. Certain year 1MZ engines had sludge issues, due to Toyota moving the water jackets further away from the cylinders to minimize quench. I have worked at a Toyota dealer for 18 years in the shop, many 1MZ vehicles are going very strong to this day, they are much tougher than a 2GR. The 3VZ V6, and 2AZ 4 cylinder were among the worst Toyota engines ever made, Toyota will tell you that.

    • @ltwracing
      @ltwracing 6 лет назад +1

      FunkyFresh48 I agree with you on the 3VZ. I was a Toyota tech too for a few years but if taken care of the 2az could be reliable. It had water pump issues but most people would drive it when the drive belt snapped or never change the oil. That’s what killed them.

    • @HotForgeChaos
      @HotForgeChaos 6 лет назад +1

      GR-series engines also have an appetite for oil. There's a guy in Australia running a severely modified 2AZ on methanol running 9's all motor, and it sounds aggro as fuuuuuck

    • @FunkyFresh48
      @FunkyFresh48 6 лет назад +3

      I have seen a lot of high miler 2AZ and 3VZ cars, I am not talking about individual examples. I am saying that the 2AZ and 3VZ have cost Toyota the the most monetary damage as far as engines go. That does not come from my opinion, or any bias, it's a fact. The 3VZ had a high rate of head gasket failures, the aluminum heads and iron block didn't like each other. :) The heads and block would expand and contract differently, causing wearing on the head gasket until failure. Many blocks had to also be replaced due to severe pitting on the block decks, caused by ECD. Toyota launched the V06 campaign for this issue.
      The early 2AZ engines had an issue with the head bolts pulling the threads out of the block, the later 2AZ engines had a problem with excessive oil consumption due to dainty oil control rings, we can blame the EPA for that problem.

      I currently have both a 2001 Camry with the 1mz and a 1993 Toyota pickup with the 3VZE and I'd say they are both great engines. My '93 pickup now has close to 250,000 miles (or 400,000mks) and it's still going, it's underpowered by todays standards but certainly not unreliable! I had more problems with Toyota 22R 2.4L 4 cylinder engines (which were easier to work on). The head gaskets were replaced under a Toyota recall 20 years ago on my V6. I have done some work on 3VZ engines and I can't say I like it but it doesn't happen very often!
      If you want a not so good Japanese design, you could look at engines like the 3.0 liter Mitsubishi that I had in a 1997 Dodge Caravan or some Mitsubishi 4 cylinder engines which were even worse! I drove a low mileage smoking Hyundai Excel that had one of those to the closest junkyard and barely made it there! The car had 142,000 KM or 88,000 miles...

I bought mine at 140k and used it for running deliveries for about 70-80K miles and of those miles I had been changing the oil every 15K interval with Mobil 1 Extended Performance (15K synthetic oil). The car did about 200 miles daily! Around 210K the engine had been starting to run rough and burn oil. Around that time I had to get rid of it as repairs cost more than what the car's worth. So I'm not sure if it was just on its way out or if it really needed oil changes more often.

      The 2.2 D-CAT was a mess from Toyota, despite the fact that it is producing good figures, especially for a diesel. The sealing compound between the block and the cylinder head was way too hard, leaving a mark on the cylinder head if this problem wasn't balanced and recognized in time while power loss, high fuel consumption and problematic electronics are also common problems.

    • @HotForgeChaos
      @HotForgeChaos 6 лет назад

      The engines themselves were good but they were let down by their ancillary equipment. The 1KDs in the Hiace and Hilux models have a short lifespan on the fuel injectors and diesel pumps, and the clutch driven alternators have a fairly high failure rate, according to the auto electricians I work next door to. The 1HD 4.2L diesels are solid, reliable engines, but I've heard many cases of them snapping crankshafts when you put more boost through them. But you can't beat a Toyota L-series diesel. Utterly bulletproof, they do not die, short of running them out of oil

      I don't think he meant it like that. I think he just wanted to talk about the failures since he's been talking about successes a lot. I think European engines are largely garbage. Too many of them are siblings (Ford-PSA being the shittiest offender) and the rest are incredibly expensive to service. I mean, I don't mind fixing or rebuilding parts but man it's expensive if anything happens to your Audi. Or BMW. I live in the north and I don't know if this is a thing elsewhere but Italian cars definitely share the reputation of Italian train manufacturers: they just don't start in the cold. Old Volvos make the cut. Some VAGs are ok. Would drive a Jag but only from late 90s. Saab used to be great I guess.

Im in the used car business, and never have I seen one without its engine being rebuild/replaced after just 150.000km. It sludges, blows head gaskets, cracks in the engine block, EGR problems, turbos prematurely wear etc. etc.

      Jake K Nissan KINDA tried redeeming themselves with the 2nd gen QR25 (in the 2007+ Sentra spec V, at least):
      No more pre-cat problems (supposedly), no more butterfly valve screws coming loose......but still had the terrible rod-to-stroke ratio (which conspired to help keep its redline comparatively low). That big ol' stroke keeps its crank/reciprocating mass very busy at speed.
      Still, mine is fairly "peppy" in the mid range....

      I'll be honest, the 4 port versions that come in the 5 speed and auto models are down right crap. They can't reach RPM levels required to burn off carbon so they kill themselves all the time. But get one that revs to 9k and look after it and it's a sweet engine.

      Yeah because he provides little to no evidence as to why these engines are terrible. Especially with the 1MZ FE. If you know anything about those engines, youd know that theyll last a life time with even minimal maintinence. The Camrys that they put those in literally do not die. Look anywhere on craigslist or whatever and youll see these things going for 3-5k with 100 thousand miles already on them. Those engines are 20 years old still holding their value and this fucker said theyre deserving of a spot on this list because of engine sludge build up like are you kidding me? He threw this list together with little to no research involved. Do you really think people arent going to get pissed about someone spreading mis information about great engines?

    • @manhartlol6451
      @manhartlol6451 6 лет назад

      What is 100k miles dude ? That's nothing Even RX-7/RX-8 engines can handle 100k without a proper maintenance... and they are considered to be UNRELIABLE AF. You see, almost every non-downsized engine is going to withstand 100k miles. That's nothing hard to achieve tbh
      Although I do agree that the video is done without a lot of research.

    • @devyn10111
      @devyn10111 6 лет назад

      ManhartLOL I was low balling the fuck out of that because thats around what my car had on it before I got it. Im sure there people out there who run Camrys even longer without changing oil. But thats a bad idea because the engine sludge does become a problem. Its a toyota though. Of course it burns oil and builds sludge. That doesnt mean anything if you take care of it though because if you do, itll live much longer than youll need it for. My uncle has the exact same car except a year newer and hes at nearly 500k from using it as a daily driver and has had almost 0 front end or engine issues beyond normal wear and tear like torn axle boots or rusted calipers. (Minnesota)He runs cheap oil and FRAM filters too. I run synthetic and K&M filters so I should see even better life. The 1MZ FE is arguably one of the most reliable engines toyota ever made. And it has proved to be imo. Itll rip if you want it too as well. 194HP and 209 torque isnt slow. Its drones a bit but once you get it past 4k, she starts eating.

    • @manhartlol6451
      @manhartlol6451 6 лет назад

      Yup, if you love your car and maintain it , it's just a pleasure to see it going another 50/100k miles, always. In EU the 1MZ engine isn't as popular though so I can't give you my own opinion on it. But I used to have the B16A2 Honda Civic along with 2 other guys riding literally the same models. Mine ended up going with me another ~100k miles ( With the clock before it being 130k) while 2 others didn't even reach 150k. The reason being though is the 2 other civics were used by daily potatoes, they just drove it and didn't care to maintain it. Some engines are built to be maintained and drive for ages and some are made for potatoes that just put in gas and run. Fun fact, my civic was still running perfectly fine when I was selling it and went for something more newew though. But if the guy will take care of that car he will run easily another 50k ( considering I've sold it for 1,5k$, that's a steal, lol)

    • @devyn10111
      @devyn10111 6 лет назад

      ManhartLOL Yeah you can never beat a Honda in reliability. Theyre hard to find for sale at a decent price around here though because everybody has mods and shit. I got my Camry for $900 because it had a power steering leak. Granted the lady did want it gone because it was leaving stains in the garage, But it ended up being a $12 fix from the seals in the pump going bad so Im happy. I wish it was a manual though. The auto tranny is fast but eh, I wanna drive not just sit there and mat it lol

I mean, there are STILL ej25s being made today that the headgaskets blow out! Not to mention the oil pickups on early single cams being extremely prone to getting blocked due to a tiny clearance between it and the pan, even tiny dents are known to starve engines. Not to mention how dated they are, being they are still being produced, headgaskets and all.
