Imagine being the organization that owns this channel, putting in all the work to make this video, uploading it to general disinterest, and 4 years later having it show up in a ton of people's reccomendations and they're all laughing about the timelapse of the spinning kid.
But on the other hand, getting blessed by the algorithm would be the best way to spread the video and what it's trying to convey. Dunno about this becoming a meme, things get absurd and spins out of control there.
It's the difference between being entertained and being forced to learn. Spending 15 years working in Special Education has taught me that kids sit still for what they like, not what frustrates them.
@Jimmy McNabb I agree that school is not the most enjoyable experience, yet it's still there because it serves a more significant purpose. If kids in US paid more attention in class they wouldn't have suffered and got baffled by life's challenges, as history just repeats itself. And just a note, just because we have a calculator it doesn't mean math is useless, we need to know what happened for x+y to output z.
@@JustAnormalGuy1330 everything you learned in school has nothing to do with almost anything in real life. What school should be is preparing you for real life whole also teaching you the necessary skills for life, not the most complicated math problems that you would only need of you're gonna be a mathematician. The only good thing about school is history. Science is alright and in English, we learn nothing new and we just do the same old stuff, read and write.
Finally, a short video which clearly explains one of the biggest parts of ADHD in a nutshell. It is so easy to be distracted when one has ADHD typically, but people always overcomplicate how it seems by saying things like "What's a good ADHD game?" or whatever. There is no "good ADHD game" or "good ADHD teacher." There is only "something which interests the individual." If something is boring, then it bores everybody, but it's just even worse off for those with ADHD!
The paper linked in the description, which this experiment came from, suggests that the kid spinning around in the chair is him using movement to retain his focus. Not necessarily because he is not interested in maths but because of the difference in what is required from an individual in the two tasks. The Star Wars clip (which is of Anakin pod-racing) requires little processing, being more about engagement. Where as the math video is requiring him to think and process the information. Or rather quoted from the author in the paper, “We have shown that what’s really going on is that it depends on the cognitive demands of the task. With the action movie, there’s no thinking involved - you’re just viewing it, using your senses. You don’t have to hold anything in your brain and analyze it. With the math video, they are using their working memory, and in that condition movement helps them to be more focused.”
@naturally_rob exactly! Kinda like how some people would tap their pencil or scratch their heads when they think. People with ADHD do the same when they think but they do it in a more exaggerated way.
Yeah idk what these two goofballs above me or their piece of paper is talking about but as a person with ADHD I'm not spinning around to focus I'm spinning cause I'm so Incredibly bored.
Interestingly enough i do the movement thing when im thinking a long time about something , i dont do the spinning thing tho i just walk (.... and spin)
"[...] therefore, according to our studies and experimental evidence, we conclude that the math video was so exciting that the test subject started to spin his chair in a bliss, while the Star Wars video was boring enough for him to show no reaction"
@@guystewart-jordan9605 That's true, and something I didn't think about for some reason. My ADHD usually acts the way that I said in my comment. Everyone is different, though.
The way he puts his hands together like a businessman hearing an important pitch... man I honestly find the Star Wars side just as funny as him spinning around... he’s just so still, so poised.
I’m in college, and I can really tell the difference between when I’m engaged in something or not. I can usually zone out and read a large book in a day if it’s interesting- but a boring textbook can take a week to read a few chapters.
yeah i'm kind of the same like there is some book where I don't feel hungry or anythings like that when i'm reading them (but after it's another story)
Seems like you can justify just about anything by saying the textbook is boring. While I sympathise with people having the condition, it’s not meant to mean that subjects that take effort and thinking like math and physical sciences (or any subject really) should be labelled boring and be fairly dismissed. It would have been closer to objective if you said that a ‘difficult’ textbook can take a week to read. Which just boils down to what you actually like to do.
And the fact that most educational videos are just... Boring. No amount of cool graphics or funny jokes with make me interested if the person talking also sounds disinterested and monotone.
@@Caldera_Scarab this is why people like sam O'Nella academy are great. Sure, if you want to know something specific, he may not be the guy, but you do at least learn something interesting. And if he really wanted to, he could make learning something useful entertaining if he tried hard enough.
different opinion: i have adhd (inattentive type with little bits of hyperactivity) and I have trouble focusing no matter what. It doesn’t matter whether I’m watching a math video or a show I enjoy, I fidget during both, no matter what. However, it is a lot easier to give in to the fidgeting during something you don’t enjoy.
That’s how I am. In school I always had such an issue sitting still, but even at home watching tv or a movie, I often ended up shaking my foot or twiddling with my phone.
I was severely traumatized years ago as a teenage. Got diagnosed with ADHD. Spent my whole life fighting ADHD. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 6 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.
I'm so very happy for you, Psilocybin is absolutely amazing, the way it shows you things, the way it teaches you things. I can not believe our world and our people shows less interest about it's helpfulness to humanity. It's love. The mushrooms heals people by showing the truth, it would be so beneficial for so many people, especially politicians and the rich who have lost their way and every other persons out there.
Hey mates! Can you help with the source? I suffer severe anxiety, panic and depression and I usually take prescription medicine, but they don't always help. Where can I find those psilocybin mushrooms? I'm really interested in treating my mental health without Rxs. I live in Australia don't know much about these. I'm so glad they helped you. I can't wait to get them too. Really need a reliable source 🙏
YES very sure of Mr.medmushies. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, BPD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!
It was, so far, the funniest thing I saw this year. I literally laughed for the first time in a long time, and it made me feel so much better about my ADHD struggles..
In summary, all students should be required to watch Star Wars in place of their regular math videos in order to prevent boredom and increase wellbeing
Very cool study! My friend accompanies kids with learning disabilities and autism in a special school (the classes are like 6-8 kids). There, the kids are allowed to move more freely, walking around the room with their school work in hand. This kind of research helped in creating the understanding that this movement is beneficial for people when taking in information and especially for those who are already struggling. I find it so fascinating that this new knowledge is being applied in these special schools and that I often hear from adults working from home how they like being able to stand at their desks sometimes (or work on a desk treadmill or how they generally prefer sometimes getting up and walking around/do chores while thinking about a task) yet we still ask of almost all children in regular schools to sit still at their desks for half of the day.
As a person who has ADHD myself I can relate to this since math math and school in general gonna be honest bores me to hell And I just generally walk around to try and keep my sanity
The point of math classes, even if you are not going to be an engineer, scientist, or mathmetician, is to train your brain on how to think critically. An important skill our society currently lacks to say the least. Everyday I hear or see the dumbest s*** ever Lol
It's to keep the brain stimulated. People with ADHD have a lower dopamine than needed, so stimming and fidgeting helps keep the dopamine level where it should be. This happens to everyone when they have low dopamine, but it's more common with ADHD.
this was me 5 minutes after i said i will study for 3 hours straight, then i would start spinning the pen and thinking about who made that pen and what that person is doing right now, the most random things
How is it connected to ADHD? There's nothing abnormal about being bored by math. By the way personaly I love math, but what's wrong with being bored with something?
The difference is the degree and frequency. Someone without ADHD can find something boring and tedious but push through anyway because it's something that needs to be done. Someone with ADHD can struggle alot more as the boredom and frustration of the task could reach a level where it is actually painful to do it. And the mind of the ADHDer is always fighting against the boring thing, even if it is something that needs to be done. So if you're sitting down and doing homework, suddenly you realize it's been 3 hours and you haven't even read a page. Focusing is a huge task in itself. Most are bored in class, but someone with ADHD have to focus alot more than someone without ADHD just to get the same grades. Focusing on the teacher, the tasks and the homework becomes much more difficult as your mind literally forces itself to focus on more "fun" things like daydreaming and fidgeting. You go in the classroom with a "Today I will focus and learn!" mentality and leave with a "I didn't even realize I zoned out and missed the whole class". Of course ADHD is a spectrum so for some its so minor its barely noticable while for others it can destroy their lives over time.
@@xXDonTdODRugZXx This has almost nothing to do with ADHD, this has to do with subyacent causes, I have struggled severely in the past at focusing on almost anything, I have no significant signs of holding ADHD, it has more connection to anxiety. And in fact you're making plenty assumptions because the study states that the kid was in reality focused in the Math vid. the intellectual exigence influenced his behaviour, not his "disinterest" Don't preach about psychology if you have no clue, thanks
@@luis-sophus-8227 Of course everything is more nuanced than my explanation but I have had ADHD my whole life and the things I explained are very real struggles to me and many others with ADHD. Just because the same symptoms can be found in anxiety does not mean they don't exist in ADHD.
@@luis-sophus-8227 And of course 'luis-sophus' knows more about disorders than the University of Central Florida, with a team of dedicated researchers who have been studying ADHD for decades. It is also not the intellectual exigence of the task that triggers the symptoms, you'd have known that if you at least read the study. "previous research from Rapport, who has been studying ADHD for more than 36 years, has shown the fidgeting was most often present when children were using their brains’ executive functions, particularly “working memory.”" "As recently published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Professor Rapport’s senior doctoral student Sarah Orban and research team tested 62 boys ages 8 to 12. Of those, 32 had ADHD. Thirty did not have ADHD and acted as a control group." During separate sessions, the children watched two short videos, each about 10 minutes long. One was a scene from “Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace” in which a young Anakin Skywalker competes in a dramatic pod-race. The other was an instructional video featuring an instructor verbally and visually presenting multistep solutions to addition, subtraction and multiplication problems. While watching, the participants were observed by a researcher, recorded and outfitted with wearable actigraphs that tracked their slightest movements. The children with ADHD were largely motionless while watching the Start Wars clip, but during the math video they swiveled in their chairs, frequently changed positions and tapped their feet. That may not seem surprising. After all, weren’t the children absorbed by the sci-fi movie and bored by the math lesson? Not so, Rapport said. “That’s just using the outcome to explain the cause,” he said. “We have shown that what’s really going on is that it depends on the cognitive demands of the task. With the action movie, there’s no thinking involved - you’re just viewing it, using your senses. You don’t have to hold anything in your brain and analyze it. With the math video, they are using their working memory, and in that condition movement helps them to be more focused.”
The spinning had me giggling, but also, I'm surprised he was literally that still during Star Wars. I can't not spin in a spinny chair ever, even when engaged in something. The spinning is just soothing, and I have a tendency to fiddle by nibbling (like on my hands or the kazoo on my desk, which I'll also hum into lightly) or touching my skin/hair when I'm watching something
@@KattReen I've experienced hyperfocus (where I procrastinate both peeing and eating and cannot stop doing the Thing), but I'm a fidgety fella and spinny chair is impossible not to rock about in. And that enjoyable is star wars??? Hell Naw! Rather watch math videos on youtube. There are tons of fun math videos I watch for entertainment but I closed the star wars movie after first 10 minutes. Was so bored.

He's only spinning because he is not watching an engaging math channel, like West Explains Best! In all seriousness, every subject can be made interesting, just ask Bill Nye.
Its the slow progression of his attention wearing thinner that makes it funny , you can tell he starts out trying to focus but his body just wont let him. He becomes increasingly mobile throughout.
Not any kind of demonstration of ADHD symptoms. In the math video he’s being instructed to learn about mathematical concepts he doesn’t relate to, is not interested in, and probably doesn’t know how to apply to his life. In Star Wars he’s immersed in an action sci-fi setting with real stakes and observing social interaction. Also Star Wars is literally designed to sell kids toys through immersion and spectacle.
This is the ridiculous argument that education needs to compete with entertainment. Or we as a society could push the idea that education is engaging in itself and that learning comes with rewards that are far superior to the momentary dopamine rush provided by entertainment.
@@guystewart-jordan9605 Education does compete with entertainment for the attention of society. It might be ridiculous to you but that’s reality. Society already does push that idea the issue is that entertainment activates senses on a more primal level. Society says drugs are bad but people still become addicted to heroin.
Math: *uncontrollable spinning* Star wars: "the self-control to not spin is strong in this one" Though it's interesting to notice they started to fidget more by the end of 10 minutes, even with star wars
@@Tintelinus as someone with an attention deficit who is really into Star Wars, I can confirm, you get distracted by other stuff typically during the end.
“After we aggregated the data and accounted for any outliers or anomalies, our study offered a very surprising conclusion that was contradictory to our original hypothesis - the subjects invariably found the most popular and successful sci-fi series of all time more entertaining than a mathematics lecture.”
As someone with ADHD, online classes are way harder in terms of staying focused. You're just surrounded by all of the fun activities that you do at home, and that is a huge distraction. I often found myself getting out of my chair in the middle of class to get food. I would also play games and watch RUclips. Being physically at school is different, because it's an educational environment, and you're not surrounded by all of these distractions, so it's easier to focus on the work.
When the pandemic is over I feel like people should have a choice on if they return to school/work in person or not. Whether or not productivity increases in different environments depends on what works best for each person.
All these videos and comments about ADHD are making me feel like I have ADHD, to quote someone "I have ADHD the doctor just didn't diagnose me with it yet"
It's kinda both honestly It's an issue you have that they need to adapt to, but it can't be individually pinned onto one side of the coin - it's understandable that they didn't believe you because they can see who is struggling and who isn't and generally most people aren't
That’s a future astronaut right there! On the left side, he is shown training in the centrifuge to take high G forces. On the right, he’s learning about spacecrafts and intricacies of the interstellar travel. NASA should recruit him 100%
yes. But for people with ADHD it's amplified. Regular people would be able to force themselves to stay still and concentrate if they tried. People with ADHD can't. This video, by itself, does a bad job of representing what ADHD really is.
It’s crazy, I did not learn a single thing in my chemistry class because I thought the subject was boring until I found a 2 hour video essay on nuclear fission and watched the whole thing just because it was explained expertly.
@@Sohlstyce I had never heard of Bodmas but the only difference I see is that Parenthesis (or brackets???) go before exponents which I don’t know if that really changes anything.
It’s ridiculous that the solution for ADHD is drugs rather than better teaching. And since it’s so prevalent how can it be a disability rather than just a difference. Also, we live in a society that’s indulging people with gender issues and the entire world is expected to accommodate them, but people with ADHD are told to medicate. Imagine the uproar if gender issue people were told to medicate to stop their issue.
Yeah that’s accurate when we’re bored we tend to move around however when seeing something we’re interesting in and that entertain we will give all attention to it

Yes and no, I have ADHD from child to adult and even things I'm interested in are a serious concentration struggle. Obviously, the more bored I am the bigger the struggle
As someone diagnosed with REALLY bad ADD, I don’t feel that being diagnosed with ADD means I am at a disadvantage to learn, but rather that it is harder to focus on subjects which are not engaging or have a distinguishable positive impact on my life. I know math is important, but math can wait when the galaxy is at stake.
But we are at a disadvantage to learning. Our brains can’t focus and we have bad short term memory. So one of the best bets is to work around that by “active recall”. No one’s saying we’re stupid.
That's not adhd that's called "being fucking normal". Your brain is conditioned to the instant dopamine hit from playing videogames or watching movies but not conditioned to focus on the things that are "boring" because most people on this planet don't understand delayed gratification. So instead of resetting your brain chemistry you just take Adderall to flood everything with dopamine and overpower it. The human body was not meant to encounter this many stimuli that everyone gets in 2021 and "adhd" is just a made up disease for big pharma to get you hooked on what is basically meth
@0McSlav0 Everyone displays a certain amount of "ADHD-like" symptoms from time to time but for people with ADHD it is more, long-term, disruptive and can be damaging since it's impulsive. They may want to pay attention and sit still but their mind tells them no, essentially. Mostly due to how their brains are wired differently! I guess the point of this video is to show that ADHD isn't just always distracted all the time, just mostly when it's non-stimulating to the brain.
Malignant narcissist traits and ADHD-like behaviors are so common amongst people living/grown in western societies, it's almost NPC-ish to fall under one of those categories.
I have ADHD, and I fully agree that usually the solution is as simple as not forcing myself to do something I hate for no good reason. I had a great Algebra teacher who was always interested in his subject, and learning Algebra felt like getting better at a video game. Meanwhile, my parents had struggled to teach me basic multiplication, because even though they meant well, it just was. not. interesting.
@@alexanderwill2847 100% me! I had no problem learning basic arithmetic in 1st grade. Even today I'd completely nope outta a task like that: and my work involves some pretty intense higher math that I actually enjoy doing.
When watching Star Wars he looks so bored. But with math, he’s trying to figure out the degrees he turns every time he spins on the chair. edit: two years later this is crazyyy but yah its a joke. the math video kid is clearly bored and trying to find stimulation through fidgeting. the star wars kid is perfectly attentive to the movie, sitting still as the movie is stimulating enough.
@@shenobabyfreefire7694 That's very impressive actually, I didn't know something like that would work so well. Thank you for your nice, educational comment! It is very much appreciated! 🙂
It’s not that impressive. Remember, this is a time lapse video, meaning it’s sped up. The kid wasn’t actually spinning that fast, so the original video was much easier to edit. They probably edited the original video and then sped up the edited version
wow, it's almost as if something designed to be entertainment is more engaging than a video on something most people grow to hate. revolutionary stuff here lads
It's not that he is disinterested in the math, its that its harder and triggering ADHD fidgeting, according to the study. He may not be interested in the start wars, but watching TV isn't a mental skill

Thats why I recommend you to keep in mind and never forget, why you are doing it, and what benefits gives you to have good grades, or to be able to do your homework
This is literally me. During work meetings, watching a video editing course or when studying, I couldn't stop fidgeting around, but whenever I watch my favorite series, movies, I'm absolutely locked in.

I agree that school is not the most enjoyable experience, yet it's still there because it serves a more significant purpose. If kids in US paid more attention in class they wouldn't have suffered and got baffled by life's challenges, as history just repeats itself. And just a note, just because we have a calculator it doesn't mean math is useless, we need to know what happened for x+y to output z.

Seems like you can justify just about anything by saying the textbook is boring. It would have been closer to objective if you said that a ‘difficult’ textbook can take a week to read. Which just boils down to what you actually like to do.

"previous research from Rapport, who has been studying ADHD for more than 36 years, has shown the fidgeting was most often present when children were using their brains’ executive functions, particularly “working memory.”"
"As recently published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Professor Rapport’s senior doctoral student Sarah Orban and research team tested 62 boys ages 8 to 12. Of those, 32 had ADHD. Thirty did not have ADHD and acted as a control group."
During separate sessions, the children watched two short videos, each about 10 minutes long.

"math can wait when the galaxy is at stake" *bars.*
But we are at a disadvantage to learning. Our brains can’t focus and we have bad short term memory. So one of the best bets is to work around that by “active recall”. No one’s saying we’re stupid.
This comment ❤️
@@obinator9065 my mom used to say most people with add are actually smarter than average, mightve been just to make me feel good about myself tho
This is so fucking hilarious to me, mostly because of how relatable it is.

Dont Choose wrong path , we muslim also believe in Jesus as messenger of God , like messenger Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam .
THINK ABOUT
= > before jesus birth , people follow whom ,
before prophet jesus people follow prophet of that time like Adam , Moses , Noah , Joseph , Abraham etc .
These were the messenger of Allah at their time on earth now last messenger is Muhammad , you should follow Muhammad now.
So Jesus Was A Messenger Of Allah
1 ) ACCORDING TO CHRISTIANITY
= > when people tryied to torture JESUS
and want to beat him and kill him even they were thinking to hang on neils etc etc etc
is it a quality of god that any one can beat him and to nail , jail and hang him , torture him.
2) Jesus Eat Food When He Was Hungry
is it a quality of god ? ( Hungry God ) if he eat food then also do toilet for pee and poop
at that time no toilet seat was there so they used to do that by hidden in grass and back of some trees and stones etc
is it a quality of God ? No
= > why some people wants to kill Jesus and want to hang on neils ?
because Jesus called people towards Allah/God the creator of everything . so the ruler of that time thinking that jesus will destroy our rulings on people and can destroy our kingdom , bcz people wanted to follow of true path of the creator.
= > Some people says JESUS DIE FOR OUR SINS
This is totally wrong
if someone rape your wife , sister , mother and murder your family .
Then , will you say , he will be in heaven bcz Jesus died for his sins ?
Jesus had ever say that "enjoy your life do whatever you want , kidnap a young girl and rape her and do robbery , do murder etc etc
And I want to die for your sin then you will be in heaven , and hang me on Neil etc etc "
NO don't make your on thoughts .
THIS IS INJUSTICE
this is your thought , and this thought is wrong .
you should follow muhammad now .
= > WE ARE NOT GODS CHILDREN , if we are children then Gods cant make hell fire .
and pig, ant , dog , all animals , they will also think we are also son of God . This is not true , we are not son of God
Allah says in Quran chapter 2 Ayatul kursi
= > " Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? who we are ? we are running , Seeing , Hearing , THINKING ETC
1 ) some people says that we are made by our parents ( mainly mom ) if your mom made you then she should know that
1 ) how many hair in your head ?
2 ) how many and much veins , intestine , heart size , brain veins you have ?
ANSWER
1 ) if any mom makes a child then she don't give birth to paralyse , dumb , and gay etc
instead of it , she will gives birth to very handsome , smart and best child
2 ) your mom dad didn't make you and even a single hair of yours
if you make yourself by your own , can you stop your heart , can you stop hearing , seeng , can you stop breathing , no
it shows you are not creator of your self
you cant stop from getting old or die
RESULT
your creator make you from weak little disdained liquid from ( your father mother )
and now we are thinking that we are immortal and enjoying life and forgot that who is our creator
WHO ARE

1 ->JESUS start talking after birth , jesus made clay bird and from the order of Allah that become original bird ,
2 ->Moses have stick when he droped that it becomes a snake from the order of Allah , 3 3 ->NOAH MAKES a ship large ship from the order of Allah.
4 ->Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam split the moon from the order of Allah
This is not jesus , moses , noah , Muhammad power , this is the power of creator that is Allah
ALLAH is arabic word
ISWAR is sanskrit word
GOD is English word of creator

so read Quran and follow right path
WHO ARE MESSENGER
God / Allah send messages to their messenger so that they tell to the people
2 ) we can't pray to messengers like jesus , Mohammad , adam , moses etc
but we should pray to the creator ALLAH /GOD in way as last messenger told us . now last messenger is Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam
3 )ADAM , jesus , moses abraham were messengers of allah before muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam AND ADAM WAS FIRST MAN AND PROPHET
Allah is only one God and prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam allah's Last messenger
if you follow ALLAH'S ORDER then you will be in Jannah
1 . ) first order ( allah is only one God and prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam allah's last messenger )
2 . ) second order ( salah / prayer ) according to muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam
