Never thought of it. Being burnt out there by music is a temporary thing. I have a quiet moment from time to time or watch RUclips videos on other things then go back to the music.

I've been into music since I was 10 years old, I'm 61 now. I've been through different formats of music, like 8-tracks, vinyl, cassettes, mini-disc & CD's. I've never get tired of music
bc it keeps me in a good mood. I never get tired bc there is always something new & different coming out or there is music from the past that I never heard of or forgotten about,
so just that is a reason why I never get tired of music, music is my life & my soul. I love GOD & my family more, but music keeps me going no matter what mood I am in.

Sometimes I sit down to listen to music and find that nothing moves me. Other times an album will hit you in the right mood and it's magical.

My favorite is when that happens and you least expect it. Like perhaps you’ve listened to the album before and it was good but for some reason now it’s perfect. That is a magical feeling.

@BrendonSnyder I totally get what you're saying. This happens to me most often when I am listening to something on my house system that I've only ever heard on the car radio. I discover all sorts of new bells and whistles that I've never noticed before. I experienced this most recently with Roxanne by The Police and Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. The car stereo was not doing those songs justice!

@@BrendonSnyder Case in point: Yesterday I put on Kansas - Leftoverture for the first time in years and Carry on Wayward Son completely blew me away. I realize that my musical perspective has kind of evolved since the last time I heard that song and I've learned to appreciate it in new ways.

I did get burnt out quite bad in 2022-early 2023. I had bought far too many albums and it seemed like an impossible task to get through them all. Every new album was a burden, not a joy. The obvious solution was to buy less, I'm now going through that backlog slowly, alongside new releases, and I enjoy both.
Whenever I can't find anything to listen to, the old, trusted favourites always do the trick. I also like Discogs random function, even if it doesn't give me something I want to listen to, it can start an idea.

I don't get burnt out on music entirely, but I'm absolutely burnt out on new music. The last two years or so have been so bad finding new music that speaks to me, I have very little excitement or energy to keep searching through the piles of disappointment. I don't know if I've hit the wall, or if rock culture has shifted just far enough away from me, but it's not fun right now.

Going through old stacks of music magazines like Decibel, Maximum Rock N Roll, Metal Maniacs, etc., and reading the ads and reviews breaks the burnout for me. It gets me to either go grab a CD that I haven't played in several years or go stream something new, and in the latter example it doesn't just cure burnout but feels discovery. Highly recommend!

I think i was suffering from music burnout about 12 months ago. I either had to listen to new music or go back to find new old music. I decided to go back and listen to music i had missed over the years. What a wonderful experience this has been. Have found a few new artists and have found music i hsve missed.

I have been a huge music fan my whole life but now I’m in my early 50’s and a lot if not most of the music that I have loved my whole life just brings back bad memories. Now I know why my Dad had an amazing record collection but never listened to them.

    Good albums to listen to when burnt out/depressed - Nirvana - Bleach; Can - Tago Mayo (especially the longer avant garde tracks); The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus; Tyrannasaurus Rex - My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair... But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows; Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street;

I never get burnt out on music as a whole - anymore than needed some space and quiet for a few days or so. I do get burnt out on artists, genres, or purchasing, but then I can sort of switch modes and take it from there - I'll try a genre I've never given a go (lately I've been going for those 'gramophone' type artists who play that slow-style of jazz) and that then gives me an appreciation for some of the other stuff I listen to.

Hi Brendon, you talked about streaming. That is something I do. But I digitize and do my own from my collection. I have over 5000 titles. Not as much as you. I have a Qnap Nas drive with 2 8tb drives. It's my duke box. It's great to listen too , it shuffles my collection and plays stuff I probably wouldn't put on myself. It taken a few years to put all together. It's great.

I sandblast in a booth for work, so I have earbuds in for 9 hours a day. I have an album or two in my playlist but I mostly listen to podcasts. Half of which are music based. So I have a note in my phone for bands or specific albums I listened to a RUclips video about.
I also take two cds off every shelf in my collection and separate them into stacks by book case (4-10 shelves per case and I have 6 book cases). I kinda use these as casual listening stacks so I don’t have to choose from the 2600 collection

Lovely chat gents! Some nice recommendations and relatable banter related to burn out. Sometimes this topic truly burns ITSELF out with trite aphorisms and tired bellyaching (many of us can get dizzied by the woes of keeping our head above water in any given pursuit), but you two kept things moving and brought just enough grit and joy that I feel re-energized. Thank you much!
I’d like to add that other stepping stones to bypass burn out for me include taking an ignored recommendation off of the back burner, or falling down a rabbit hole with an old favorite to see what other branching paths exist. I also like the challenge of “liking” an album I want to like but didn’t enjoy on first listen. I try to latch onto qualities I enjoy and build a case for re-evaluating an album. I had this with works by Neurosis and Primus for example.

In all seriousness, when I get burnt out, I turn to your page, I turn to SOT and other music related channels. listening to someone's passion for a band or a style of music helps me to check something new out, or reminds me of an old favorite I had forgotten about.

I totally suffer from music burnout. I work in a record store so I’m immersed in looking, listening and recommending 45-50 hours a week. By the time I get home I don’t want to play anything from my own collection - which is a shame. If I do say so myself, I have a badass collection. And I need to reconnect with it. To help mitigate the burnout, I listen to the news or sports talk radio to assist with reset.

  • @jimmyagates

I also keep new releases separate for a year so that I can go back and consume them properly. Some things inevitably get lost in the shuffle when you buy so much so this is a way to attempt to avoid that scenario. Burnout happens occasionally and I just dumb down and watch some TV for a bit until i realize how horrible it is then its back to my tunes!!

A few years ago, I started this thing where I’d just randomly grab one of my CDs from the shelves and take it out to my car and listen to it from start to finish. My time is limited due to having a family with small kids and such so over the course of day, 3-4 days I will listen to an entire album and it’s helped me rediscover something that perhaps had been sitting on the shelf for literally years. I then track my albums that I’ve listened to from start to finish in my notes of my phone and it’s been fun to go back through the past few years since I started tracking them to see the variety of stuff I’ve listened to. The one downside is grabbing something that perhaps you’re not a big fan of and having to power through an entire album such as the case with the two Use Your Illusion albums for me. Some good songs on each but so much bad filler to have to suffer through.

I have been through that myself lately. 2024 so far has been a great metal year... I got the new Bruce Dickinson, Saxon, Priest, The Rods and Blaze Bayley. I played all those non-stop from February to April. In May, I just got tired of metal. At first, I had a hard time digging through my collection. Nothing seemed fresh. I finally started to pick artists that I bought some years ago, but haven't listened to in a long time (Nick Lowe, Cracker, The Replacements, etc.) It seemed I needed jangle pop to cleanse my pallette. Sometimes it can be tough though to find that right thing. Sometimes you keep trying out old stuff, but nothing seems to hit the spot. When that happens, I typically go to classical or jazz. Something without lyrics. Doesn't always work, but mostly it does.
I also try to delve into new music or artists that I haven't fully explored. As the years go on, this is also getting harder, but still works. I found some good stuff like Alvvays, Priests, Courtney Barrett, etc.

Hi B&A: I do get burnout. I might buy odd and sundry music stuff when I feel a tad bored. For example, I recently bought a giant lot of 45s at a flea market for $15.00. It is a nice haul of different music styles. I have sorted the ones that I do not need and have cleaned the ones that I like (or will probably like). I am tediously working in my free time putting them on Discogs. While doing this task, I listen to random music in my collection. I am a captive attentive audience. When I am done with this task, I am going to reward myself by going to the record store. What started as boredom brought me back to rocker enthusiasm. Rock Always! - Heather

I worked in the recording industry. And my actual physical condition did not allow my spiritual love of music to be within that professional world as a career. I had at least 3 false heart attacks in my 20s. It's ultimately the hours of time you want to invest in the perfect sound. I worked in a few pro studios and built a couple of recording studio situations when it came to where I had to walk away or potentially have a full-blown moment of death. It was the greatest disappointment 😞 but I wasn't willing to compromise the sound and quality or artistry for my well-being. I will never tire of music on my own time. Long live Rock and Roll 🎸 🎙

Sometimes I walk up to my collection and haven’t got a clue what to play…so I usually listen to a few new releases and check out other artists on streaming. I only use streaming as a listening post however it will never ever replace my physical collection. I do spend a little too much time curating my collection than listening..but l enjoy that and it also gives me a break from over listening to Music.

I pretty much lost all my cd collection when my house flooded in hurricane Florence and I had actually not bought a lot of CDs for a while so everything I had was pretty old which makes it suck even more. And I have questioned over and over again do I need to rebuy a lot of that stuff but I'm almost at a point now where I can't especially with the wife a 17 year old son and a 12-year-old daughter there is a lot of other things to buy. But the main thing is you can just pick up your phone and listen to anything you want to listen to even though there's something about having it in your possession. But I must say when I saw you going through all that guns and roses stuff the other day I was like God damn it would be nice to have some of that stuff because I do buy certain records just because I've got a plan for them one day to hopefully set up a big display on a wall somewhere and honestly anything I do get I don't even open anymore.

I have eclectic tastes when it comes to music. I played in a metal band in San Diego for a decade - so I naturally gravitate to metal. But, when I get burnt out on a genre, then I'll switch. I'll wind up listening to R&B, maybe some blues, old school rap like Whodini or Kurtis Blow or UTFO, then maybe switch to old school pop like Hall & Oates, maybe new wave like Blondie. And after I've had my break from metal - then I'll hear something from a new metal band or something classic like Iron Maiden & I'm back on the metal bandwagon till I burn out again.

That’s a good question to ask Brendan. With the dizzying amount of CDs that you buy every week how do you make time to listen to so many? I think you would get burned out and want to do something else besides listening to music for hours and hours. I like listening to music too. I have a big collection but too much Of anything can be overwhelming. I like to limit my time in front of my hi-fi just to a couple hours a day. 2 to 3 hours that I like to do something else like work on a project go for a walk watch a movie read a book.

Repeat. We had a house band gig for a few months, Wed-Sat. Hard to keep our set list current. Imagine doing Madonna's "Holiday" for months. Takes a toll. I HATED MUSIC. Thankfully, I snapped out of it. Maybe 'cause what I listen to is not what I played in that band.

Vinyl prices are so rediculous right now. I dont have a huge collection, maybe 350 vinyl, but I just got back into vinyl collecting a couple of years ago. Now I am thinking I may just have to sell what I have and go back to collecting cd's.

I have a small collection and get frustrated sometimes... nothing looks appealing to listen to. I stream something I rarely listen to when it happens... like Tears for Fears or Pat Benatar and it snaps me out of it. Before you know it The Priest is at full volume again.

It's funny because I have a much larger collection than I used to (around 1000 albums). But I kind of look back fondly on being a kid and having only a handful of albums. I could really explore each album in depth and not bounce around so much. And yes, this was before the internet so no streaming!

Well obviously your mind is telling you it needs a break. So if you give it a break it will soon enough want to listen to music again. If you fight it by streaming or genre switch it may not really be helping and instead lead to more burnout and disinterest. Sometimes listening to the ambient sounds in the house and area where you live and your own thoughts is a good thing. So your brain might be telling you something.

That band was another moment that disappointed me. I worked tirelessly with them and studio on the Black album. Then six to seven months later, they decided not to include most credits of those who worked very hard for their overall project. Because they decided to keep it as black as possible. It was a kick in the gut. Pushing myself for no simble credit. I don't know that it was the band's decision or the label. But it was a contributing element to my departure.@Duality_of_Man

Have either of you heard the band Babymetal yet? Rob Halford and Bob Zombie both actually endorse that band. Who actually thought it would be a good idea to fuse heavy metal with annoying Japanese pop music? That's kind of like what you'd get if the Spice Girls had Priest or Maiden as their backing band. I can't warm up to that kind of metal.

I used to listen to lots of Metallica in the past, and now, whenever I hear a Metallica song, it makes me sick. But it is not Metallica's fault, it is my fault, I simply overdid it. I don't ever want to make that mistake again with any of my favorite bands...

Too many bands that are too similar. That's why I like the ones I like. Although I'm into prog I get tired of many prog groups too because they follow the same template too often. Sometimes, when I find a new group with a twist I get reignited. Too many groups that just rehash the same old sound, too many rereleases that are too old playing on nostalgia. Just me I guess.

Maybe there is burnout because of the obsession to get every single recording of a single song? To me, music is a relaxing or a positive outlet from reality. Sounds to me like your music burnout has more to do with music collecting than music listening.
