- I got one of the popular cheap spot welders for doing 18650s etc from AliExpress. Despite much feedback from buyers about some negative characteristics which they haven't fixed yet, there are some easy mods you can do to make them work better and prevent failure and turn them into a very useful tool. I also design and 3d print a box with a lid to protect it better. Then I tell you about some things I learned about the cables and battery to power it with.
The CA20-2k is the model I have, very similar to the BK11-1k, BL18-2k, and CA04 models.

Just received a new welder. It already has the capacitor in place and alloy bus bars have been added to the long traces. Nicely done.
Nice video, thanks for the information and using the hose analogy to explain resistance. As a "Sparky" (electrician) I usually use the crimped hose analogy but this is better.

Nice work. I'm glad that mine is the earliest version. Only needed a capacitor and beefing up the traces. Probably done over 1000 welds using a 12V Lipo (5AH 70C) for my power source.

The 1 mm gap from + to - is absolutely fine. It takes around 1KV to arc 1 mm.
Yes I figured it must be fine since no one has ever said it's been an issue before. Rather strange to have a milled gap in the PCB between the + and - lines but then have them almost touching at that point.
Might help to add some extra flux when doing those larger solder jobs. Really helps them look nicer and flow better
ive done a few mods to mine as i blew 2 fetts when i first got it lol ive put heatsinks on the fetts made the traces thicker added some big diodes and a capacitor where you fitted a resistor .i found the fetts went due to using a lead acid battery
Yeah I think you might have the -1k model which is a fair bit different

What W are the 500ohm capacitor and 22ohm capacitor?
I only used resistors, not capacitors. 1/4W. Don't think it really needs a parts list, just write those down and ask for them at your local electronics store, or order online.
Great video. Looks like you've already done the cap mod? I wonder if a 3S XXXP 18650 pack would work to power this? Would they give enough 'punch'?

How important are these mods
very important. If you don't do them it won't work as well, and eventually the MOSFETs will die
