I have a relative with BPD. So weird you said this because when I watched Arcane I was shocked by the similarities in behaviour.. I literally remember saying "This is like (name of person)..." o.o
Yes as someone with Autism and BPD (and ADHD too but i doubt Jinx has that). I related to Jinx on a mental and emotional level. With Powder aswell. Her meltdown scene caught me off guard and triggered me the first time i watched it. It reminded me sm of my childhood.
YES so glad you mentioned that it's BPD and not Schizophrenia! I have BPD and Jinx is indeed one of my kins due to being able to connect with her struggles and her just being great representation of it. I'm glad you got it right!
I love how you pointed out the irony that Silco thought he made Jinx, when in reality he was keeping powder alive by constantly trying to protect her from her triggers. I think Vi and Silco are Jinx’s favourite ppl, which is common for someone with BPD to have a favourite person who helps them calm down from their mood swings
Yep, this is it right here. This is the real reason why the way Jinx was written in Arcane is an absolute masterclass. Literally fooling most of the people that watch it, proving a point about stigma and about a lack of public awareness, and bringing to light the real mental health crisis we face but don't talk about nearly enough. An astoundingly high percentage of BPD sufferers attempt suicide, more than just about every other major mental/mood/personality disorder. It is an incredibly sad statistic and I and many others feel that this statistic wouldn't be so high if it weren't for the fact that society not only looks at BPD as something to shame, blame, avoid and abandon, but the public simply do not understand how torturous and self destructive this personality disorder really is. It is widely misunderstood, misrepresented, and in many cases treated the same as those with narcissism. People hate people with BPD. It's all over the internet. BPD sufferers are extremely difficult to have a relationship with, ANY relationship, platonic or otherwise. It's very difficult for others to understand someone with BPD. But I hope that with time, effort to raise awareness, and more accurate representation in media, the struggles that those with BPD go through can be less invisible and more understood, and maybe viewed as less than evil. After all, you'll find in many cases of BPD that something absolutely terrible happened during their formative years (childhood and adolescence) that made them become the way they are.
(Please don’t yell at me. I’ve seen people get upset and defensive online when people say this. I’m only writing this because I’ve seen a lot of comments saying Jinx is in fact schizophrenic) It’s actually aparent the Jinx does not in fact have schizophrenia. Because we see the events of episode 3, we know the voices are caused by a trauma event. It’s clear they’re triggered in moments of PTSD. She experiences psychosis instead of schizophrenia. The psychosis is a product of her PTSD. Psychosis isn’t a diagnosis but a symptom of a disorder. Unlike schizophrenia which is a disorder and would be a separate diagnosis from PTSD with psychosis. We don’t see her experience negative symptoms of schizophrenia and the positive symptoms she does have are only the symptoms of psychosis which does include delusions. In terms of her behavior, it’s evident it’s a trauma response or a personality disorder. As far as I know none of the creators of Arcane said schizophrenia but they did say psychosis. The only reason the community says schizophrenia is because that is the only disorder the general public can associate with Jinx’s symptoms because most people don’t have knowledge of mental health and what they do have comes from media like your study shows. It’s further spread online by people with schizophrenia relating to Jinx. That isn’t a bad thing, but because of this more people think that is what she has. TLDR : I agree she doesn’t have schizophrenia but PTSD with psychosis and Borderline Personality disorder Edit : I think the psychosis isn't a symptom of BPD is because powder showed symptoms of BPD before she developed psychosis.
I know people will point out episode 5 (and moments like it) where she is talking to the Mylo and Claggor dolls. But in the scene there are no scratches or warping of the video screen like there is when she is hallucinating. So she is just talking to the dummies not responding to voices here. She is doing this because they feel real so she treats them like they are still alive and talks to them even when they don’t talk back.
May I ask where personality disorder may have happened in the show? Schizophrenia I understand, is not a symptom of power/jinx's condition since the voices she hears is caused by a traumatic event, but generally, I see personality disorder as being an entirely different personality that the person may or may not recognize. Sometimes, the personality is described as one being the more "dominant" personality, while the other(s) is more passive or waits their turn. Psychosis is generally understood as a disconnect from reality, which may include delusions and "imaginary friends" to help cope.
@@kristopherhayes1957theres many different kinds of personality disorders, what you’re referring to seems to be DID (dissociative identity disorder). but things like OCPD, NPD, BPD are all also personality disorders that don’t necessarily involve someone having a whole other separate personality. personality disorders are characterized by long term patterns of thinking and feeling that are inflexible and disruptive, difficulty handling emotions and distressing situations, and often impulsivity and lack of empathy; each disorder of course also has its own specific traits. in jinx’s case, a lot of people including myself noticed she has many symptoms of BPD or borderline personality disorder, such as extreme mood swings, (literally) explosive anger, unstable relationships and self image, and strong fear of abandonment. stress-related paranoia leading to loss of contact with reality is also a BPD symptom and jinx has that a lot, though it could also be psychosis from her PTSD. this is not an expert take at all btw so sorry if ive gotten anything incorrect here, i encourage you to do your own further research if you’re curious abt this topic!
I know of at least one real person who had severe PTSD from child abuse of the worst kind and left untreated it developed into schizophrenia in his teenage years. My only point is that PTSD can contribute to the development of schizophrenia in the right circumstances, like going untreated, continued abuse, or trauma. Jinx had the initial PTSD, the trauma of episode 3, and the continued ignoring of her psychosis and PTSD by her adoptive father. I think schizophrenia after the time jump seems like a decent diagnosis. I'm not a doctor. This is all entirely from personal experience and anecdote, so take that as you will.
@@bertimusprime7900 PTSD doesn’t develop into schizophrenia. Although other mental disorders can make you more susceptible to developing another disorder.
Me too. Having such stigmatized disorder be represented in such well loved chatacter is pretty healing. I hope people can actually learn to understand us thru her.
your analysis of the tea party is on point. i would agree that Jinx had no intention of harming anyone. when Caitlyn opened fire, Jinx held her shot even though she could have easily beaten Caitlyn.
But Jinx almost shot Caitlyn in the head point blank (after begging Vi to it herself), and almost did again after retrieving her minigun. Her intentions were undoubtedly malicious in that scene, at least when it came to Cait. She just hesitated to do it because she knew that it would make her sister hate her (and thus, compromise her goal of forming that unhealthy co-dependent relationship she wanted with Vi). Hence why she tried to make Vi do it herself, because "she can't truly hate me for this if she's the one doing it, right?"
whether or not jinx "means" to hurt someone sure doesnt mean she WONT hurt them. "she couldve killed caitlyn but she only knocked her out" is not as good of an argument as u might think. especially since she had EVERY intention of making vi shoot her in the head, and had pointed the gun to an unconscious caitlyn and if vi hadnt started freaking out and unintentionally triggering jinx by trying to remind her of their dead family, she wouldve finished the job. oh, and the whole fact she kidnapped the girl from the shower and kept her gagged and tied to a chair for hours. "didnt mean to hurt anyone" is knocking out and kidnapping 3 ppl considered a peaceful action in ur eyes??? my guy here as delusional as jinx.
One character that many labeled as BPD was Spinel from Steven Universe: The Movie. She doesn’t have psychosis, but there are a lot of symptoms/behaviors/triggers that follow the BPD list. It’s almost like watching a G/PG version of Jinx honestly Great video btw great analysis 🙌🏼
With the thing were she can only love one person, maybe now that Silco is gone, Sevika will replace the love that Jinx had for Silco. But, I’d also say that Isha could fill in this gap.
I love Rezervation Dogs too. Top 3 tv shows. It's so underatted. Now for religious psychosis, one og my favorite representation of that is definitely yellow jackets. U should check it out cuz it gets crazy.
The thing about the niece hallucination is that she's the one thing that gets John to accept he's psychotic - she never grows up, which means she's not real. A Beautiful Mind is a movie about a western man living in a western perspective, so it shows how he reclaimed a solid connection to reality without drugging away his brilliance. Jinx doesn't have BPD, as her psychosis is too consistent and therefore disqualifies BPD as a diagnosis. BPD sufferers have psychotic breaks, but Jinx hallucinates all the time, even when under a normal level of stress. She has Borderline symptoms, and I've no doubt that had it not been for the ending of Episode 3 Powder would have grown up to have BPD, but as it stands she has a full-on psychotic disorder. BPD responds well to treatment, but how do you treat someone who doesn't realize their hallucinations aren't real?
I mean does Jinx not know they arent real? She responds to them sure, but she understands that Mylo and Claggor and whoever else are dead. Spoilers for S2 below: After she buries Silco, she seems to heard his voice too though we only get one clear line from him so far and she immediately screams afterwards. So I think she does recognise them as not being real but still feels the need to respond.

I'm quite confused about mental state of Jinx in season 2. I feel like after what happened with Silco, hallucinations and voices in her head should've become even more intense, but really we kind of didn't see any of it. It's true, that she looks lost and depressed, but no more those out of control moments with visions and voices. Even while fighting with Vi! I think she looks as stable as she could get. So I wonder what happened, did accepting herself as Jinx really helped or show creators just decided to focus on other things rather than Jinx's inner state.
I'm hoping there will be more focus on her mental state in the next acts, but yeah, she does seem a lot more stable. Even when she saw Vi with the gas mask she had a little hallucination but nothing she couldn't handle. It could totally be that accepting herself as Jinx resolved her inner turmoil, but maybe it's also the shimmer in her blood? Or maybe because Vi is with the cops, she feels betrayed and more like a victim instead of the one who is to blame. Hard to tell at this point honestly.
As someone with BPD and has suffered major stressors and actual tragedies, I wouldn't entirely rule out schizophrenia because I've never experienced this. Two things can be true at once, after all, plus those as sick and neglected as Jinx are bound to have multiple issues. That said, I've experienced hallucinations once in my life and that's after ODing on gravol, which is a side-effect if you take too much too close together. (Body gets super-stupid when you don't let it puke.) My hallucinations were nothing like Jinx's though. There's no detail, everything's eldritch in form and function, forming vague shapes that sometimes look like something. (I hallucinated round, demon pigs dancing around me.) No sparks of energy, nothing in color, everything's vague and cloaked in shadow. Powder's hallucinations are way too solid and make too much sense to be anything but schizophrenia in my opinion.

Okay, but consider this. I think she has BPD AND schizophrenia.
