Not sure it’s because he trademarked it, the WWF maybe did since they own everybody’s names lol. As far as I know it was just because he used the name for himself when he returned and he left dynamite.
Bret fell out with him too because he thought he betrayed Owen going back after his accident.

I respect Dynamite kid as a talent, for bringing Davey Boy to the states, and for influencing Owen Hart to get involved (as Owen was always 50/50 on it doing it).
But it’s really hard to like him as a human, he’s one of those sad cases.
At one point he had it all, fame, money, living his dream job, citizenship in North America (Canada), a Wife, he had the look, then he threw it all away.
He ended up living on a Council Estate (The Projects) in Britain, as a Wheelchair user, drugged up, out of shape, living on the state, and due to never being clean and sober, they had to use subtitles to understand, and deservedly so he had no wife.
I remember looking at him when he died, and thinking “I am better than him in every possible way”.

I'd been quite happy watching Big Daddy and Giany Haystacks bumping bellies on world of sport, but then ITV would cut to WWF footage toward the end of its run, and The British Bulldogs looked like they came from the future. It was a real trip seeing English people doing well in the USA. British wrestling did not last long on TV after that, and as much as it was superficial in certain respects, the Americans added so many little touches which created a superior form of entertainment.
I do remember that even before American wrestling was televised that British wrestling felt like entertainment from a bygone age, and arguably should have modernised itself well before the tsunami that was WWF Swept everything aside.
I always say that wrestling in that period took inspiration from fighting games you were beginning to see, the likes of Streetfighter 2, characters with a distinct persona and special moves, and as a 10 year old those things converged in a memorable manner.
'He's fallen flat on his fookin arse'
    RIP British Bulldog

The funniest thing about that time was a lot of people in the UK not even realising that those mass monsters 'The British Bulldogs' were the same 'Dynamite Kid' that had been the skinny little lad that had tagged with Big Daddy years earlier and had ridden Tally Ho Kaye around the ring like a show pony in 'comedy spots' and that 'Davey Boy Smith' was the same skinny 'Young David' that had been tagging with 'Strongman' Allan Dennison! Despite their names it was only the third or fourth appearance that most people caught on who they 'really' were!

@SteveChiverton Their transformation was wild, at first I thought it was Americans playing the part of Brits based on how tanned and athletic they looked 😂
'You can't get a tan like that in England, lad'
Looking back, there was some foresight shown by WWF in seeing action movie stars like Arnie and Stallone and modifying wrestling to reflect that, obviously without hindsight that many lads pushed it too far when it was a bit of a wild west in getting juiced and whatnot.

  • @buckgrizzly

I feel like this should have been a longer episode. There's so much they didn't touch on, and they could have had a lot more wrestlers comment or share stories (other than family members). I feel like they just focused on the bulldogs, then moved on to the Summerslam match with Brett and then it was on to the drug issues/decline. I wanted to hear from people who he worked with in that classic era as well as the start of the attitude era when the Hart Foundation were feuding with Austin, more about the DX feud, his partnership with Owen at a tag level. He was such a big character and I'm sure they all have stories about him which would be lovely memories to share with fans, but they left that out. Maybe it's bias because he's always been my favourite, I guess I was just left a bit disappointed and wanted to hear more about a superstar/legend who did a lot over 2 decades but doesn't gets talked about that much.

Davey Boy was great when he was motivated. Look at his matches with Bret & Owen, then you look at some of his worse matches.
He was a big kid, unfortunately he did have bad influences around him too which messed his career & life up in places & would wind up cutting his life short.
    Good talent.

The bulldog and Micheal bisping the UFC fighter sound very similar when they both speak. Probably because they're both from the greater Manchester area but had been in the states for a while so they kind of picked up the American twang to their voice a little as well lool but this was a really good short documentary but sad as well and it was a shame Davey boy passed away so young.

Yeah i enjoyed this documentary. I got a little emotional because i love Bret Hart, and The Hart Family. The Hart Foundation, The Bulldogs. I Starting watching Wrestling in 1990, So by the time I started Davey Boy was already a Single, However Tape Trading, Plus my grandfather would Order PPV's and record The events on VHS. So as a kid I watched a lot of 80's Content from my grandfathers Personal Collection, Primarily WWF, NWA, WCW. I also remember watching some tapes in Spanish, and Japanese. The biggest bond my grandpa, and I had was Pro Wrestling. I'll never forget attending The Royal Rumble 1992, and WrestleMania 10 with my grandfather. I miss him very much.

The editorial control they give some of these families really showed on this one. They really made it seem like he was on the brink of reconciliation with Diana, but isn't it known he was shacked up with Bruce's ex for quite some time before he passed away? Like a year, and she told people they were going to get married.

I've thought about why the Hart's accent is so hard to place. I'm far from Canadian so bear with me. I believe it was a hard mix of Stu's personal, thick Canadian accent mixed with Helen's thick Long Island accent. So you get those distinct sounding "not so Canadian, but REALLY Canadian" accent. Anyway.

Davey kept telling everyone that he had an infection or something in his spinal column, but, nobody listened until it was too late as he'd become addicted to painkillers for it after the trap door incident. He really did have a slow killing infection in his spine that wouldn't heal... 🤔

I just read an interview with Vampiro, where he openly admits to being very sensitive, prone to empathizing with people being abused and sensitive to bullying. Honestly, I'm thinking people like him, Davey Boy, CM Punk, Chris Candido, are/were cut from the same cloth and they are people who shouldn't be in a business as rough and hard as pro wrestling. Or around legitimate assholes with issues like Dynamite.
I think it's actually sad so many people like this don't figure out the obvious - just leave the thing that's hurting you and do something else. I think Punk is kinda figuring it out, he split for 7 years, now is back, but methinks when this current WWE run ends and he counts his millions from AEW and WWE, he will just sigh a breath of relief and enjoy his time home. It's sad the vision of money, fame and status corrupted so many so much, they willingly repeatedly put themselves in situations that affect them.
Tony Khan I feel is somewhat a similar boat. He's a very sensitive guy, he's not built for this. And he's breaking down. He should just quit and hand it over to someone else, but he's afraid his daddy or someone online will call him a quitter. As if that mattered that much when it comes to his health.
