    This is the most dangerous way to snap these off. The safe way is to use a pair pliers hold the end to break off firmly and twist. The danger in using the handle part is it doesn’t hold the part that will break off firmly. It will more often than not fly in an unpredictable direction. The best pliers are lineman or smaller electrical pliers. Good luck.

    Thanks so much for helping this widow learn how to use this tool that her husband always used. I needed to know how to safely break off the blade and I'm happy to also learn about the locking mechanism! (Your husband yelling out was exactly what my goofy husband would have done, too. Hahaha!!)

    Thank you SO much for making this video! I have the exact same kind of box cutters (the cheap kind) and I had no idea the back popped off and that I could use it to break the blade. I knew I could break it, but didn't know the safest way, so hearing you narrate my exact same thought was funny! When I actually tried it, I literally screamed to my boyfriend, "oh my gosh! This lady is an effing GENIUS!". :) Thank you, husband for filming as well!

    I've used these things for years and I've always butchered around with a pair of pliers to snap off the blades... with mixed results.
    I never noticed the little slit in the handle.
    No idea why there are no instructions for this - although maybe there are - I'm not a big one for following instruction (or even reading them).
    So, on phone, "Hay Google, youtube snap off blade". Your video was top of list.
    Thanks heaps.
    Small note, works much better if you make the blade snap point protrude slightly from the cutter.
    1 its easier to break, and 2 if you dont, you can get a break across the snap line.

    Thank you! I've had these for years but didn't use them much til today, broke the point and started thinking of those blade lines. Plus why have the blade sooooo long unless you're supposed to work your way up, lol! Thought I'd look it up to make sure and found this!

    • @vsajewel
      @vsajewel  8 лет назад +1

      +Lisa OckGal Hansen That pretty much describes how I realized those blades were more functional than I knew too! I don't know why...we've had these around for years. But I think they disappear before I break a blade...where they all keep disappearing to is a bigger mystery! Thanks for your comment :-)

    • @OckGal

      vsajewel My neighbour took the previous one I had. I checked mine out today and the end had the little spot for it. you'd think the package would explain that! I thought it was just the cap on the end. I snapped the blade today and it took more effort than I thought and the corner didn't quite make it but good enough, lol!

    Just what I needed to change blades on an incredibly cheap box cutter (8 knives for £1!). Also thanks for the "break away from your face" advice (I probably would've done that anyway, but...) because the old blade flew off into the corner of the room and I still haven't found it yet.

    I have had these around the house four years and never knew there was a slot at the other end! I usually lose that part anyway. I just grab a plier but you have to be careful you don't break off two at a time if it matters to you.

      +ALLxoxoxoxo My husband was shocked when I showed him how many people have seen this video! He wondered how anyone would even find it. I told him the same way I did when I realized there was more to these box cutters than I realized. I was down to one again and the blade was really dull when I noticed that it looked like you could break them off. So I searched for videos showing me how they worked.
      I'd never really noticed that the blades broke off before. I'm sure I've thrown lots of them away thinking they were cheap and now dull. RUclips is amazing...you can learn anything!

    • @mjb12141963

      RUclips has pulled my backside out of the fire many times. The first time I realized they broke off was when one broke when I was using it. I when to show my wife and she said "I know, I thought you did too?" Which for me is embarrassing since I am the tool man type.

      So am I !!! It seems like I gravitate towards things I'll generally get most hurt by too. Like fabricating metal...but even sewing can be dangerous for me! I have a condition that's slowly causing loss of muscle in my hands and feet. So maybe subconsciously I'm figuring that by the time I'm 90 I won't have to worry about that 'cause I won't have any fingers left?

    I saw one technique which was to put a slot in a jar and then put it into the slot and then snap it off. The jar then collects the blades as you go. This has the advantage that you insert the blade into the slot in the jar and there’s only one way the blade can go and that’s down in the jar.

    maybe im just having a blonde moment but im not understanding the point of breaking the ends of the blades? i looked this up because i have the EXACT utility knife right infront of me, my only difference is i have a small container with about 8 of the entire blades themselves extra. So wouldnt you just wanna replace them that way (with an entire new fullsize blade) rather than breaking them? my problem i couldnt figure out was just getting the new blade in. i was totally unaware of them being breakable until this vid. can anyone explain?

    • @vsajewel

    how can you just take the blade out without breaking it?

    • @vsajewel
      @vsajewel  8 лет назад +2

      +Jayden Vaughn Good question! I'm not really a box cutter expert but I once saw that you could buy replacement blades yet I had no idea how you would get them in.
      So I just played around with one and figured out that if you take that same clip off the back, then you can slide the 2 black things that lock the blade all the way out and the blade comes out with it too. I hope that helps!

    • @vsajewel
      @vsajewel  8 лет назад +1

      +Jayden Vaughn You take all the black things off 1st. That opens the bottom...then just slide it out through the bottom opening.

      I know what you mean...these are super cheap! It's kinda why I was so surprised to learn that you can even break off the blade to expose a new one. Mine usually disappear or break long before the blade gets dull. But I guess one survived long enough for me to realize it.

    First, thanks for trying to help. YT is great for these type of things but only because the greater community helps out my making vids like this. However, since the process is quick, maybe a 1:30 version that simply gets to the actual task would be an improvement? Watching you break the clip at the end wasn't exactly confidence inspiring. :) It was helpful though because I decided to use small wire clippers to do the job instead of risking snapping the plastic. Hope that is helpful in some way. Thanks again for tackling the subject.

      It is helpful...I'm not great at being brief, so your comment is appreciated.:-) I gotta work on that!
