This is the most dangerous way to snap these off. The safe way is to use a pair pliers hold the end to break off firmly and twist. The danger in using the handle part is it doesn’t hold the part that will break off firmly. It will more often than not fly in an unpredictable direction. The best pliers are lineman or smaller electrical pliers. Good luck.
I love you. I bought a couple from Walmart and the blade went dull. I knew you could snap them off but couldn't figure out how. Who knew the end came off to help with it lol. Thank you.
Thanks so much for helping this widow learn how to use this tool that her husband always used. I needed to know how to safely break off the blade and I'm happy to also learn about the locking mechanism! (Your husband yelling out was exactly what my goofy husband would have done, too. Hahaha!!)
Thank you! I've tried to figured out how to break a my blade for forever...knew how to do the locking etc, but never noticed the back slit. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been so afraid to attempt it, but your instructions made it much safer. I had no idea that’s what the black end was for!!
Thank you SO much for making this video! I have the exact same kind of box cutters (the cheap kind) and I had no idea the back popped off and that I could use it to break the blade. I knew I could break it, but didn't know the safest way, so hearing you narrate my exact same thought was funny! When I actually tried it, I literally screamed to my boyfriend, "oh my gosh! This lady is an effing GENIUS!". :) Thank you, husband for filming as well!
Thanks. I started using these as pencil sharpeners for drawing, because you get like 14 blades if you buy them at the dollar store (and it doesn't eat your pencils!). :3
I felt really dumb that I didn't know how to do this and had to come to RUclips to learn. But now I don't feel so alone in my ignorance. Thank you so much for this video. I also love how you left in the parts where it didn't work so if that happens to me I won't be surprised. You just got a new subscriber!
I've used these things for years and I've always butchered around with a pair of pliers to snap off the blades... with mixed results. I never noticed the little slit in the handle. No idea why there are no instructions for this - although maybe there are - I'm not a big one for following instruction (or even reading them). So, on phone, "Hay Google, youtube snap off blade". Your video was top of list. Thanks heaps. Small note, works much better if you make the blade snap point protrude slightly from the cutter. 1 its easier to break, and 2 if you dont, you can get a break across the snap line.
Thank you! I needed to know how to set it up and break the blades. And seeing you work with your’s showed me how it’s supposed to go. I was trying to set mine up upside down 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you. I thought I was just a bit thick. Nice to know it was not all that intuitive. Now I can have a sharp blade without having to buy a new box cutter.
Thank you! i was about to do it with my hands! My box cutter that i stole from my older sister was really dull and wouldnt cut properly without alot of force! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I've had these for years but didn't use them much til today, broke the point and started thinking of those blade lines. Plus why have the blade sooooo long unless you're supposed to work your way up, lol! Thought I'd look it up to make sure and found this!
+Lisa OckGal Hansen That pretty much describes how I realized those blades were more functional than I knew too! I don't know why...we've had these around for years. But I think they disappear before I break a blade...where they all keep disappearing to is a bigger mystery! Thanks for your comment :-)
vsajewel My neighbour took the previous one I had. I checked mine out today and the end had the little spot for it. you'd think the package would explain that! I thought it was just the cap on the end. I snapped the blade today and it took more effort than I thought and the corner didn't quite make it but good enough, lol!
+Lisa OckGal Hansen I know what you mean about NO EXPLANATION. I searched everywhere thinking someone has to know how these things work! That's why I made the video...it shouldn't be this hard right? Thanks again for your nice comment!
Thanks from Edinburgh, Scotland! Had one of these knives years ago, but had forgotten what to do. And like you say: no other videos are out there! Just what I needed to change blades on an incredibly cheap box cutter (8 knives for £1!). Also thanks for the "break away from your face" advice (I probably would've done that anyway, but...) because the old blade flew off into the corner of the room and I still haven't found it yet.
I have had these around the house four years and never knew there was a slot at the other end! I usually lose that part anyway. I just grab a plier but you have to be careful you don't break off two at a time if it matters to you.
+ALLxoxoxoxo My husband was shocked when I showed him how many people have seen this video! He wondered how anyone would even find it. I told him the same way I did when I realized there was more to these box cutters than I realized. I was down to one again and the blade was really dull when I noticed that it looked like you could break them off. So I searched for videos showing me how they worked. I'd never really noticed that the blades broke off before. I'm sure I've thrown lots of them away thinking they were cheap and now dull. RUclips is amazing...you can learn anything!
RUclips has pulled my backside out of the fire many times. The first time I realized they broke off was when one broke when I was using it. I when to show my wife and she said "I know, I thought you did too?" Which for me is embarrassing since I am the tool man type.
So am I !!! It seems like I gravitate towards things I'll generally get most hurt by too. Like fabricating metal...but even sewing can be dangerous for me! I have a condition that's slowly causing loss of muscle in my hands and feet. So maybe subconsciously I'm figuring that by the time I'm 90 I won't have to worry about that 'cause I won't have any fingers left?
vsajewel oh man yeah. Cataplexy is narcolepsy and triggered by strong emotions so GUESS WHO HAS ANXIETY ATTACKS and mood swings pff. I actually mauled my knuckles despite this , darn. Pliers are my friend now
vsajewel -ignores switching account- hOI it's good to hear from you again. You okay? BTW I got some good personal experience in how I shouldn't handle blades ever because I got stuck in Irma and ended up realizing I needed to get to the hurricane shelter after nearly destroying my palm cutting cardboard to try to pad the windows. Gaaah. How are you?
I saw one technique which was to put a slot in a jar and then put it into the slot and then snap it off. The jar then collects the blades as you go. This has the advantage that you insert the blade into the slot in the jar and there’s only one way the blade can go and that’s down in the jar.
maybe im just having a blonde moment but im not understanding the point of breaking the ends of the blades? i looked this up because i have the EXACT utility knife right infront of me, my only difference is i have a small container with about 8 of the entire blades themselves extra. So wouldnt you just wanna replace them that way (with an entire new fullsize blade) rather than breaking them? my problem i couldnt figure out was just getting the new blade in. i was totally unaware of them being breakable until this vid. can anyone explain?
+Jayden Vaughn Good question! I'm not really a box cutter expert but I once saw that you could buy replacement blades yet I had no idea how you would get them in. So I just played around with one and figured out that if you take that same clip off the back, then you can slide the 2 black things that lock the blade all the way out and the blade comes out with it too. I hope that helps!
+RIRA This made me laugh because I just published another video on bandaging severe finger injuries...but it wasn't from box cutters, just scissors :-)
yeah lol. well I was still able to cut the chipboard with my rectangle-shaped blade. XD I should've bought a decent cutter instead. The plastic slot is not even perpendicularly fit to the blade angle.
I know what you mean...these are super cheap! It's kinda why I was so surprised to learn that you can even break off the blade to expose a new one. Mine usually disappear or break long before the blade gets dull. But I guess one survived long enough for me to realize it.
First, thanks for trying to help. YT is great for these type of things but only because the greater community helps out my making vids like this. However, since the process is quick, maybe a 1:30 version that simply gets to the actual task would be an improvement? Watching you break the clip at the end wasn't exactly confidence inspiring. :) It was helpful though because I decided to use small wire clippers to do the job instead of risking snapping the plastic. Hope that is helpful in some way. Thanks again for tackling the subject.
I am so glad the internet exists

You probably just saved me from a horrible accident
Haha
LittleSatyr lol good to know :- )
I love you. I bought a couple from Walmart and the blade went dull. I knew you could snap them off but couldn't figure out how. Who knew the end came off to help with it lol. Thank you.
BrokebutCreative That's exactly what happened to me! Thanks!
Nothing wrong with your voice... I was wondering how to do that myself without grabbing a pair of pliers

You're hilarious! Thanks so much for making me smile :-) And you know what they say about great minds!
Thanks. I started using these as pencil sharpeners for drawing, because you get like 14 blades if you buy them at the dollar store (and it doesn't eat your pencils!). :3

I didn’t know about that slot in the end of the cutter; used it and safely snapped off the blade, thanks!!!
Took a little practice but it's working, just as you said! The little blade still went flying but off to the side.
I'm a little delicate myself, I appreciate the honesty and caution and gentleness haha 💜
I've used these things for years and I've always butchered around with a pair of pliers to snap off the blades... with mixed results.
I never noticed the little slit in the handle.

I have this same tool and it came with no directions. Thank you for sharing with me how to get the blade out so I could use the cutter.
Marion Roberts Your welcome! Mine didn't have instructions either and my husband helped me figure it out.
It’s like 10 cents the instructions would cost more than the knife
Was looking for an answer to this issue myself on how to break off the blades just this evening! Thank you for the info!!
This was a big help to me. I had already tried using pliers, with no success, as they simply bent the knife blade.
Thank you. I thought I was just a bit thick. Nice to know it was not all that intuitive. Now I can have a sharp blade without having to buy a new box cutter.
that is how you make an informational video, straight to the point. thank you
Thank you so much! I was so excited when I finally was able to remove the old blade.
I thought u hurt ur self at 3:06 but it was ur husband who yelled😂
Jeff Lol...he's a pretty loud guy : - )
Thank you! i was about to do it with my hands! My box cutter that i stole from my older sister was really dull and wouldnt cut properly without alot of force! Thank you so much!
Your husband yelling at the flying razor made my day! :)
Tried so hard to breal this off on my own withno luck! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I've had these for years but didn't use them much til today, broke the point and started thinking of those blade lines. Plus why have the blade sooooo long unless you're supposed to work your way up, lol! Thought I'd look it up to make sure and found this!

Thank you for this video. I had a hard time figuring out how to remove the back part then I saw your video!
I Snapped It Off With Nail Clippers And It Worked VERY Well❤️❤️
Elissa J interesting!
I just did this and it totally works!!
This actually worked for me. Thanks for the tip!
This helped a lot! I 'm glad I found this so I didn't hurt anyone!
lmao wow, thank you for sharing. I've been doing it unsafely with pliers for YEARS
Thank you for posting this.... Had no idea how to do it and my fingers apperciate still being in place... 💙
THANK YOU!!! Was just trying to figure that out myself! I knew it broke off but wasn't sure how. THANKS! HAVE AN AWESOME DAY!!! :0)
I have had these around the house four years and never knew there was a slot at the other end! I usually lose that part anyway. I just grab a plier but you have to be careful you don't break off two at a time if it matters to you.
I know what you mean...that's what my husband does and it's not as precise but it works too.
as cheap as they are at Harbor Freight it's hard not to get a couple everytime I'm in there.
True...I do the same thing...and I usually get 4 but then 2 months later it seems like they've all disappeared!
+ALLxoxoxoxo My husband was shocked when I showed him how many people have seen this video! He wondered how anyone would even find it. Thank you! I also couldn't figure out how this was done! I'm now practicing on an old cutter I was gonna throw anyway. :P
Your video is hilarious even from the start haha.
Thank you thank you! I am also clumsy, and have hand spasms, and am a crafter on top of it all. Thank you OMG.

Wow...I'm sorry. I have a friend with Cataplexy. It's a bizarre condition. I never realized it was dangerous too. I like pliers though :-)
+Gelasia Kidd You are welcome...I love your humor about the challenges you face...I'm beginning to too...and humor helps a lot!
vsajewel -ignores switching account- hOI it's good to hear from you again. You okay?
BTW I got some good personal experience in how I shouldn't handle blades ever because I got stuck in Irma and ended up realizing I needed to get to the hurricane shelter after nearly destroying my palm cutting cardboard to try to pad the windows. Gaaah.
How are you?
Cut myself quite badly trying to do this earlier today. Wish I would have looked this up first. Thank you for info.
Thanks so much. I almost hurt my self but since it wasn't strong it didn't cut me. Thanks
I saw one technique which was to put a slot in a jar and then put it into the slot and then snap it off. The jar then collects the blades as you go. This has the advantage that you insert the blade into the slot in the jar and there’s only one way the blade can go and that’s down in the jar.
when i buy a new cutter should i cut the first part from the knive so that it will be sharper ? thank you very much
Thanks, most do not know this. Now dispose of the end safely.
Thank you for this video im a do it yourself girl and this helped big time
I was searching for this . Thanks!
Thank you I seriously had no clue!!!
thank you so much - I didn't know how to do it either - yay!!!
Thanks so much, exactly the video I was looking for.
Thanks for letting me know! Feedback is always helpful :-)
+Royal Catmaster Your welcome...thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much!
I also had no clue how to do this...😅
Thanks! It helped me a lot
Khôi Nguyên Ngụy Thanks for letting me know!
Thanks so much for making this video!!!!
Oh my god you are a genius thank you so much!!!

You just get lots more uses with a really sharp blade before having to replace it.
The blades are designed to snap off after they're dull. Once you use up the last piece then you could refill it.
Thank you! That was helpful. :)
+all is one Thanks for watching and your kind words!
+all is one Thank You!
Cool..!👍
thank u you’re a saviour
Thank you really much. Never really thought about it.
cervus Me either...until I needed a sharp blade!
Thank you! I knew there was a way!
Thank you.., for demonstration
God Bless you and thank you so much for teaching me this!!
Great video!
Wow thanks for this. I was wondering how to do this
Thank you dear
Thank you :-)
What to do with the pieces
Pemba Tamang I wrapped them up in masking tape before I threw them out.
You just earned a subscriber!
I was doing that with piler..but thats the way to show off to somebody who dosent know...
Prathamesh LOL you don't even want to know how I used to do it!
Helped me immensely thanks 😊
thank you so much for your help m’am , i am forever in your debt
ahhaah thanks for the video. after years of trying to figure this out.
Thank you and sorry this took so long...there's been a problem with RUclipsrs getting access to their comments.
Thanks! Worked Great!
THANK YOU!!!! Really appreciate this!
+Simpli Shelli Thanks for taking the time to let me know!
how can you just take the blade out without breaking it?
+Jayden Vaughn Good question! I'm not really a box cutter expert but I once saw that you could buy replacement blades yet I had no idea how you would get them in.
So I just played around with one and figured out that if you take that same clip off the back, then you can slide the 2 black things that lock the blade all the way out and the blade comes out with it too. I hope that helps!
+Jayden Vaughn You take all the black things off 1st. That opens the bottom...then just slide it out through the bottom opening.
Jayden Vaughn dont self harm
+RIRA This made me laugh because I just published another video on bandaging severe finger injuries...but it wasn't from box cutters, just scissors :-)
Wow. Easy. Thanks.
Great !
Thanks!
Perfect! Thank you so much!
I just use pliers
Your freaking amazing!!! Thank u sooooo much!!!
Use a safetyknife from slice ceramic knifes much safer and it cuts anything you want.
Thanks for this step..
I tried this but welp, it didn't work. The cutter snapped off in a rectangle shape lol :( anyway thanks
Geez! That's worse than the plastic thingy breaking off I think!
yeah lol. well I was still able to cut the chipboard with my rectangle-shaped blade. XD I should've bought a decent cutter instead. The plastic slot is not even perpendicularly fit to the blade angle.

+Anime CAS Woah! I bet you're just too strong for it! I didn't have that problem...although I did have others before I figured this out :-)
+vsajewel in case you're wondering I'm revisiting my comments trying to figure out what RUclips changed....because they said they did.
Thank you ma'am, I couldn't figure it out my self
Thank You❤️
Learned something new
Thank you!!!

Nice editing caption mam xD
thank you!

Seriuosly though, why is so fucking hard to make a snap blade that works properly hey...
thank you so much :,^)
Wauw thank you!

It is helpful...I'm not great at being brief, so your comment is appreciated.:-) I gotta work on that!
Super Helpful. Thanks for making this video
Thank you for the fantastic video, very helpful indeed. Voted up!!!
You are so welcome and thanks...if only!
IF only?
I have also subscribed to your channel. Hope it helps you out in some way and also looking forward to more vids :)
+Kamil Lakhani btw...that would be cool if we could really up vote videos, right?
Good shit!
I feel stupid not figuring this out. I was gonna use pliers, but there's no need!
Amazing video. I always wondered why that back piece came off now I know.
THANK YOU MA'AM!!!!!
Those of the exact ones I have
Thanks very much
