In this clip, Akon opened up about his father having 5 wives and 18 siblings. He spoke about the cultural importance of having such a huge family and the contrasting logic underwriting that form of family versus the nuclear family in the US. According to Akon, family isn’t valued the same in America which makes it difficult to see anything past a monogamous setup.

in African culture it is accepted the village raises the kids, so you can have five wives and everyone helps in. Black Americans are confused between White system of one man and one wife and the African instinct to have lots of kids by different women.
I'm in west Africa now and the family structures here are absolutely amazing. He's telling the truth. Family is tight and they all help each other without complaining. Even the community is helping. I think this happens mainly because there is little to no governmental support. That means that you must cooperate with others or run the risk of not having support when you need it. Self management

Polygamy only works if you’re able to provide for all of them equally. Also you cannot downgrade your previous wives' lifestyle when you decide to marry another one. Throughout history it’s usually the Kings and Nobles who had many wives, so it made sense for them
Exactly. And not only provide, you have to be able to handle the emotional baggage of each wife too. It's difficult to make one woman happy, let alone 5. And each of them gotta have a separate kitchen too, otherwise they'll fight all the time.

I'm with Vlad on this one...it's all about being able to provide. Here in the US it's difficult because not everyone is willing to chip in. Women here under those circumstances want to be taken care of, because to other US women it looks weird. Women here don't really dress up for men but to show out for other women. Men don't really care.
I don't think a person can spread themselves as widely as Akon or any of these clowns say. There are only so many hours in a day, add in the kids, work and time for yourself. When you have time to get together, spend quality time?

Its funny because in alot of non europian cultures, the defination of family gets lost....we never leave our parents home until we get married and take care of our parents when they get old(not in a old folks home).
My in laws “retired” and told my brother in law and me we could all move into their two story home with them and we can all chip in and save money. We moved in and once they saw how we was saving and also helping them. They started asking for more and more and would make up reasons why they needed more money. It’s sad really cause they hurt their daughter which is my wife cause now she realizes her parents are greedy and selfish. We didn’t ask to move in with them at that time. They asked us to uproot our family. We did so we can save way faster and help them retire more easily. Now they’ve spent all the money we’ve given them and they both have to work BS jobs in their 60s.

In the US there are laws that give women artificial power to leave and still be supported by the man. child support and alimony are long term costs for men and easy for the woman to get. I'm Liberian. I'm married to a black American woman. I told her the same thing. I told her, black American culture idolize individualism. It's insane to me that 18yr olds or 21yr olds are moving out getting apartments. It's insane to me to force debt or thst financial responsibility on your child.
Majority of all the women especially didn't move out until they were married. The only reason why majority even moved out because we went to college so it kinda didn't make sense to move back home when we been gone 4 to 5 yrs.

America use to be like that in the first half of the 20th century. More blacks were willing to get married and less broken family homes. It was only until the second half where government aid started flooding communities did things start to change. You also have to realize when human beings are struggling they become more family oriented, not only to their immediate family but also outside. Also our culture where women want to be as equal as men create problems. Not saying you cant find an american women with traditional values but our culture creates this. If you go around the world, especially in countries with less opportunities, unless their culture encourages certain princples it the same thing. Thats the reason why black families were so large back in the jim crow era because there was more struggle, and when youre poor though you think it will discourage you from having kids it can actually dl the opposite because each kid is like extra capital in the house where everyone has a certain job.
Basically in African families people care more about building their family then they do about their own personal wants and desires
