In this clip, Akon detailed how he got introduced to engaging in crime. Akon started off selling drugs but said the money wasn't worth the risk of prison time that was sure to follow. He then began stealing cars in and around Jersey City before taking his operation to Atlanta. While in Atlanta, Akon started making tons of money from stolen cars to the point that he opened a few chop shops and laundered the money through his three recording studios.

The way I remember this story is.... He was 15 or 16 years old and him and his friend stole one car and got caught in Georgia. The judge initially gave him 5 years in jail but the judge didn't want to keep him locked up for 5 years away from his family in New Jersey so after one year he let him go free thinking that he would return to New Jersey and his family but he didn't want to go back. Akon stayed in Georgia with his friends family and started committing bigger crimes.... He was the youngest kid to be placed in an adult jail for Grand theft auto in Georgia, hence the nickname "convict" was bestowed by other inmates...
At that time while he was in jersey, most notably Newark, it was right before it became basically the car theft capital of The US. So 100% cars were getting jacked left and right. It reminds me of the movie New Jersey drive
