  • New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick said he told both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe to be ready to play against the Chicago Bears last night. Jones got the start, but quickly was replaced by Zappe early in the second quarter after he threw an interception. Belichick said the interception did not have anything to do with the benching. Zappe led the team to two quick touchdowns to take the lead but followed it up with two interceptions in the 33-14 loss. Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe recap last nights game and the Pats two QB system.

The comeback defenses have made this year and the regression of the passing game in the NFL has been greatly underrated. This season is the lowest scoring season since 2009 and has the lowest average TD scored since 2006. Also the running game. This season has the highest rushing average since 1988, that's crazy we literally haven't seen a year quite like this in over 30 years. Running is king again and defenses control the game outside of maybe 2 teams. This is a very different season then we're used too and I'm here for it tbh. This is as competitive and unpredictable as the NFL has ever been. The only thing we really know is that the Bills are the best team, but with so many great defenses it's no telling who will win the Super Bowl. Defense wins championships.

The only teams still dominating with passing offense are the Bills, Chiefs, and Bengals. I'm curious how much the season's touchdowns are affected by how abysmal some team's offenses are, though. There are 9 teams that have 18 or fewer points per game right now. Teams like Denver and Indy are definitely dragging down the average.

It's really never changed. Teams that could run the ball won more than they lost. It's always been that way. Sure there are games where a team runs for nothing and wins. But more times than not the team that runs for more wins the game. Buffalo bets KC because they ran the football. It showed KC they had to defend something else. Look at the box scores week after week. Any year you what to look up. The teams that out rush the other team wins most of the time. You are controlling the clock. The defends just can't pin their ears back. They have to think you could run. You don't have to run but the defends has to make sure you aren't. It gives the QB the split second more to throw when they are throwing. You get play action. The best thing to make any QB better. I don't care what QB it is. QBs love play action. Big plays from the passing game and control the defense with the run. You will win more times than not. Been that way forever. It's never really changed.

My biggest concern for Zappe in that game was the defense seemed to key in on his height (he's only 6'1"). Only one of those interceptions was his fault, and it came when they were going to lose anyhow and had to keep trying to make stuff happen. The other one was a tipped ball, and it does seem like he had a bit of trouble seeing over his line and may be staring down his receivers a bit. I still think he has a higher ceiling than Jones. Jones kind of sucks.

Takes like these from Skip are why it’s tough for me to stomach all the credit that Brady gets. He’s obviously been an amazing, AMAZING QB, but the idea that he deserves 75% of the credit for the Pats’ dynasty when he started out as a game manager, with the defense leading the way? And Vinatieri finishing multiple big playoff games (including 2 Super Bowls) with clutch kicks?
Does anyone remember Brady’s last Super Bowl with the Pats, when the Rams shut him down but the Pats’ defense was even more dominant and won the day? Brady was mostly brilliant in New England, but, to act like Belichick was just along for the ride-after he eased Brady in with pretty much everything a young, un-athletic QB could ask for-is nonsense.
