      @@mtp4430 exactly. “Old Yankee Stadium” that birthed modern baseball was destroyed in the 70s. This was a refurbished stadium. I loved this stadium but I also think the new one is great too. Anyone that went to a 2017 playoff game would agree

    • @mtp4430
      @mtp4430 3 года назад +2

      @@SleepyRainTrain I really liked the old Yankee Stadium. The 1st time I went, I remember thinking, man, that's the field where Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig played. Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle too.
      There was so much history in that old ballpark and it was pretty well maintained for a ballpark as old as it was.
      They should have kept maintaining it just like they do to Wrigley Field and Fenway Park because there was just so much history destroyed when they demolished the place.
      You really got the feeling of baseball history every time you walked in there. The facade, the monuments in center Field, etc. All exactly like they were when Ruth and Gerrig played there.
      All the old pictures are black and white, but when you walked into the stadium and saw it in full color, it was like going back in time. It was a shrine. And even in building a new ballpark, they should have left the old one standing as a landmark.

      I have the same feeling for the Boston Garden despite mine hating the Celtics and the Orange Bowl in Miami. I think it is like how we see in sports today, lack of traditional pride. I say it is the owners who think of money. I am glad Green Bay continue to renovate Lambeau Field to merge yesteryear to today, retaining their traditional value and matching up to what are needed in this day and age. I am not a Yankees fan, but seeing how they tore down the Yankee Stadium, I cringed at that. The uniform is another thing. I love seeing teams with traditional uniforms like when I saw the Steelers and Raiders. It is the mystique. Look at the Celtics uniforms. I hate the alternative, because it is beautiful. Now, we are seeing how the uniform is not treated with precious respect to team’s history.
      Stadiums and teams are afterthoughts.

      I loved when WPIX began using that special closeup of Reggie's at-bats where you only see him and not the usual wider shot to also see the pitcher. I could be wrong but I don't recall them ever using that shot for any other hitter. Maybe they did it for Winfield and Mattingly in later times, but it certainly began with Reggie.

    • @slewofdamascus
      @slewofdamascus 4 года назад +3

      I grew up watching Reggie with Oakland and I couldn't agree more about his batting stance...it was a thing of beauty. Natural power from a perfectly situated stance. Reggie had years when he batted above or near .300. That's when he was in his early prime, of course. He could sting the ball all over the field from that batting stance. And it never changed. He had the same stance at AZ state.

    The foul-back at 2:09 tells it all. When a batter fouls a ball straight back, that means he has perfectly timed the pitch. That scares a pitcher, and narrows his choices.

      "I've got your timing now, but I'll bet you don't have enough hair on your ass to throw me another one." ~ Jack Parkman
      I remember reading in Nolan Ryan's personal account of his fourth no-hitter how the last batter, Bobby Grich, fouled his fastball straight back for Strike 2. Knowing that Grich had the timing on his heat down perfect, Ryan threw him a changeup that had Grich so frozen all he could do was take it for Strike 3 to end the game and lock up the no-no.

      Reggie in 1980 had the best year of his career and was almost an impossible out down the stretch. Reggie in 1981 was awful, and everybody thought he was done and it's why they never resigned him after 1981. He went to the Angels in 1982 and hit 38HR, but from 1983 on he was on the downside of the hill and really wasn't anything special, so I can't fault the NYY for moving on. But with who they replaced him with, Dave Collins/Ken Griffey/Steve Kemp, they may as well have kept him because he would have at least been a scary option in the lineup.

    I was living in the Cleveland area and saw this on the Indians TV broadcast. First time I'm seeing it since it happened. Always remembered Reggie being carried off the field by his teammates.

    Both Jackson and Denny were ejected after this. Yankees won this game, Denny taking the loss.
    Funny, Denny started against the Yankees eight days later in Cleveland, and pitched a complete game, 3-2 victory. In 1982, Denny started twice against the Angels, where Jackson had moved, and Cleveland lost those games 3-0 and 15-0. In those three games, Jackson went 4-for-9 with a home run, two walks, and one strikeout against Denny. Apparently no major incidents, but Jackson sure did light him up. His revenge was long-lasting.
    After that, Denny moved to the National League where he would finish his career, never facing Jackson in a championship game again.

      And won the National League Cy Young Award in 1983 and helped a veteran Phillies team get to the World Series, and was even the winning pitcher in the only game the Phillies won in that World Series (he also lost Game 4). But that was effectively the beginning of the end of his career. Arm problems caused him to retire just three years later.

      @Charles McCarron - You have a point there. I do recall from listening to a lot of fans that many players thought twice on charging the mound against Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson.
