Even when Reggie missed he was fun to watch. You look and say " he is going to screw himself straight into the ground. " Such powerful swings. No wonder they went far when he connected. ( PS he was a much better fielder than people give him credit for. Good strong arm. )

I saw Al Oliver in 1980 hit a rising shot down the RF line hit the wood a foot foul on the 3rd deck. About 20 feet below Jacksons. The whole crowd gasped. We were feet away from where it hit. Sparky ran out of the dugout and intentionally walked Oliver. First and only time I saw a hitter intentionally walked after a pitch had been thrown. Oliver in that doubleheader hit 4 HRs., a double, and a triple. 21 total bases which is still the record for a doubleheader. That shot off the wood would have been the 5th HR.

26 future members of the Hall Of Fame were at Detroit for that 1971 All Star Game, 21 as players, both managers (Anderson & Weaver), another manager serving as coach (Alston), another player who was enshrined as a manager (Torre) and an umpire (Doug Harvey).
6 HR, 3 by each league were connected.
Solo HR by Aaron and Clemente, both NL.
Two runs blasts by Bench (Stargell on base, NL), Reggie (Aparicio. AL), Frank Robinson (Carew, AL) and Killebrew (Kaline, AL).
All 10 runs were scored by 10 players enshrined in the HOF.
The remaining 11 HOF players were: Mays, McCovey, Santo, Carlton, Seaver, Jenkins & Marichal, NL.
Brooks, Oliva, Yaz & Palmer, AL.
Final score: AL 6, NL 4.

After that All-Star game in Detroit all those National League guys like Bench & Aaron were wishing they could play more games in Tigers Stadium. A great hitter's park. But still, we won (American League fan here). It was the only All-Star game my American League guys won in my childhood. They wouldn't win another until 1983 and by that time I was an adult, able to vote, could drive, smoke, past drinking age and everything.

1971, it was actually 26 future hall of famers in that one, including managers sparky anderson, walter alston (coach) and earl weaver. 13 players on the nationals, 10 players on the americans. the lights stopped reggie's home run from getting into orbit.

I agree with Johnny's pitch choice because Reggie had 2 strikes on him and usually, you could get him fishing for a breaking ball out of the zone. Unfortunately, Doc Ellis threw one that ended up in the heart of plate with nothing on it. It was basically a batting practice pitch and Reggie got all of it.

Reggie helped to start the downfall trend in baseball .
He was the first batter to show up the pitcher by stopping and looking at his home runs .
If great hof pitchers like Bob Gibson , Don Drysdale , Juan Marichal , Jin Bunning , Ferguson Jenkins or Jim Maloney saw his attitude , they would be constantly knocking him down .
Then came selfish players like Rickey Henderson , Dave Winfield , Barry Bonds and Roger Clemons .
However , i believe Reggie is a legitimate hall of famer . not because het hit more than 500 homers , but because he was a clutch post season player .
Not so with Rickey , Winfield , Barry Bonds or Clemons .
