I remember in last years all-star game, they said if it was a tie after 9 innings, they would play a home run derby to see who would win. Sounds pretty ridiculous at first but it’s better than ending in a tie
Also worth mentioning that before the game they announced in a ceremony that they would be naming the All-Star game MVP award after Ted Williams who’d just died. Then to not award anyone the MVP and just slink off into the night was soooo insulting to fans. I remember watching and thinking “well at least they’ll have fun with this right? They’ll have dual MVP’s right?” And then nothing. What an ultimate slap in the face to fans and viewers.
Insane that if the home field rule had been changed just 1 year prior in 2016, then the Cubs would have won the 2016 World Series with a walkoff in extra innings at Wrigley Field, and it would have made the greatest baseball game ever played that much more legendary

I remember watching this All Star Game. I had no problem with it ending in a tie. It was an exciting exhibition. One of the most memorable games. However, Bud Selig overreacted by making the league who wins the ASG gets home field advantage. It really wasn’t that serious and showed he knows nothing about baseball.
I was thinking about this gsme tonight when they were giving Jared durian the ted Williams memorial trophy. It was named that in 2002 right after he died...and this was the first time it would be awarded...but of course it wssnt 😢
I think I'd rather have ties after the 11th inning every game than deal with the current extra innings rule. At some point we're going to have a postponed All-Star Game due to weather (not this year at a dome though) and how to handle it will be a big problem again.
Don’t they use the ghost runner rule for the ASG? That’s probs the only time I’m ok with that rule since it’ll make it a lot more unlikely that a game ends in a tie
Wow, I knew for a while there the ASG deteremined WS home field advantage but I didn't know it was all the way until 2016. 2003-2016 that's a long time for a stupid rule. Best regular season record makes much more sense.
True, but before 2003 home advantage was just switched back and forth between NL and AL every season. It wasn’t like they took home field advantage away from the better regular season team…home field advantage was decided before the season even started.
It would be hella shady, even for an exhibition game, but I feel like they could’ve just called the pitchers over and told ‘em to huck some meatballs down the middle 😂
Just remembered the card-and-dice game MLB Showdown released a special 2002 All-Star Game edition, so you could play it out and have a winner. I think I still have mine somewhere.
I always thought they should have allowed the subbed players to come back in rather than calling a tie. Though in retrospect maybe that’s hard on pitchers.
I think what they should have done is change the rules regarding for substitutions for just the all-star game and allow players who have come out to be able to come back in again. I mean the all-start game after all, is an exhibition and shouldn't be held to the same strict rules as regular season games. Actually by the same logic of it being an exhibition, they could've just let it end in a tie. Again, it is just an exhibition game.
When the leagues claim 'its just an exhibition ltheir saying theirs no difference between the all star game and the redsox playing boston college in late february....despite all the hoopla the league puts behind the game and the fan intrest in it...
Bring back own team jerseys (or design asg jerseys more unique to each team, like maybe the yankees in navy pinstripes on a grey background in an NL park)
The All-Star game when I was a kid was a holiday to me!!! I looked as forward to it every year as much as my birthday or Christmas. I've always liked making lists of fantasy dream teams for the MLB, NFL, and pro wrestling. I started watching sports in 1974, and the All-Star game was like my list came to life. Not only the great players, but seeing stars from every team in their uniform! Remember that back then, we got TWO games (Saturday afternoon Game of the Week, and Monday Night Baseball) a week to watch for the most part. Taking away the different teams uniform imho is just another way to try and sell you something else. LET THEM WEAR THEIR TEAM JERSEYS!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah they definitely could've planned for that ahead of time. I feel like most fans would've understood a limit on extra innings for the ASG if the MLB didn't just make it up in the middle of the 11th
taking this time to say... a great defensive play (like robbing a home run or throwing someone out at the plate from the outfield) > a home run. anyone can hit a homerun. not anyone can make a spectacular catch or throw someone out at the plate from the wall.
Speaking of 2017's best record, which it should have been for the past 100+ years of baseball, it's not like a team would have POSSIBLY cheated at their home stadium during that World Series, yet had to play game 7 on the road, in the other team's stadium, giving that other team some crazy idea that their pitcher didn't meltdown during the most important game of their lives didn't really matter or something. Look, I'm not saying the Astros didn't cheat, but to pretend the Dodgers didn't choke away 3 games in that series (Games 2, 5 and 7) wasn't something ether. Anyway, back to the point at hand, I was fine with a tie since it was an exhibition game. But on that matter, baseball is a game where there's no real time limit. Everyone plays until someone leads the other team after 9 innings or, in the case there's a tie after that, until someone leads at the end of each subsequent inning. If the managers are willing to not put themselves in a position to win a game, then fans have every right to be upset on both sides. So in this case, like you said, unlike the NFL, people are going to get upset if not angry. Plus, because of the All-Star game having a break for it, the next day everyone in Major Leauge Baseball has a day off. I get you can't bring in someone who's likely pitched more than they normally would, but it's kind of annoying that people want to see the best, and in 2002, we didn't get that. Final point, how is Bud Selig in the Hall of Fame and people like Bonds and Clemens aren't? Bud let the steroid era happen under his watch and didn't lift a finger to stop it until way too late. The only good things I can think of Bud doing is having the Wild Card put into action and retiring Jackie Roberston's 42 MLB wide. Otherwise, he nearly contracted the league and forced a work stoppage during the 1994 season (sorry Expos fans). Ok, rant over.
You know it really hurt bud doing this since it was in his hometown hosted by a team he brought to Milwaukee and is most likely the last All-Star game to happen there
This was the last time i watched an all star game. I know they made it so the all star game mattered because of this, but this ruined it for me. I still watch the homerun derby though.
With the runner on 2nd to start extras, ties happen less often. And apparently, there’s a rule now in the All-Star game where if it goes long enough in extras, they go to an ad-hoc Home-Run derby to decide a winner.
If the game is still tied after ten innings, they should end it. Like the managers said, players -- and especially pitchers -- run the risk of getting worn down or injured if the game goes on and on and on. Before lighted stadiums, games ended in a tie when it got too dark to play, and the world didn't end.
What a massive overreaction by everyone who was chanting "let them play". You went to an All-Star game. You saw ALL the All-Stars. You got EXTRA baseball. Let WHO play? There was nobody left, you idiots!

That's in the same echelon as Nickelback being despised in their home province of Alberta.
It's actually quite silly to think teams win or lose based on the order they play their home games at. Some teams have better records on the road. Should bring back the rule. I have fond memories of the 2008 all star game ending at 1 am.
So lets say an American League team wins 105 games, the National league team wins 88 games but the National league team gets home field in the WS because some pitcher from the worst team in the AL, say the A's has to be on the roster and gives up the game winning HR. This was so stupid.
IT’S AN EXHIBITION GAME. Who cares. It is a problem if all the players don’t get to play, it’s a problem if you hurt a pitcher to win an EXHIBITION GAME. You got to see the best players, that what you come to see.
Here's a brilliant idea. The game doesn't matter. So the roster number doesn't matter. Have every ball club send 3 pitchers, and have 100 pitchers on standby for a chance to appear. Ffs.
